Blood donation is a voluntary process where a donor has blood drawn to be stored in a blood bank for emergency transfusions. Every three seconds someone needs a blood transfusion as there is no substitute for human blood. To donate blood, a person must be between 18-60 years old, weigh at least 45 kg, have a regular pulse and hemoglobin level over 12.5 gm%. Certain diseases and recent medical procedures make a person ineligible to donate. Frequent blood donation helps save lives while providing health benefits to the donor such as reduced risk of heart disease.
