Who started the first blood bank?
Bernard Fantus
In 1937 Bernard Fantus, director of therapeutics at the Cook County Hospital
in Chicago, established the first hospital blood bank in the United States. In
creating a hospital laboratory that preserved, refrigerated and stored donor
blood, Fantus originated the term "blood bank".

Who can donate blood?
 Any healthy person with weight above 45 kgs, hemoglobin level above
15.5 grams/dl and age between 18 to 65 years(for Pakistan) can donate
blood.
 The person should not have had fever in last 1 weeks, current infection,
malaria in last 3 months, jaundice in last one year, taken medicine in last 2
days, heart attack or other heart problem, Cancer, TB, high risk behavior,
AIDS, major surgery in 6 months.

 More than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day.
 Every two seconds someone in world needs blood.
 The blood type most often requested by hospitals is type “O”.
 More than 1 million new people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Many of
them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their treatment of chemotherapy.
 One out of Ten people admitted in a hospital needs blood.
 A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood.
 According to the American Red Cross the rarest is AB(-), present in 1% of the
Caucasians, in African Americans it is even rarer. B(-) and O(-) are also very rare,
each accounting for less than 5% of the world's population.

Is it harmful to donate blood or any
side effect?
Sometimes people who donate blood notice a few minor side effects like
nausea, lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting, but these symptoms usually
go away quickly. The donor's body usually replaces the liquid part of blood
(plasma) within 72 hours after giving blood.
New, sterile disposable equipment is used for each donor, so there's no risk
of contracting a bloodborne infection by donating blood.
If you're a healthy adult, you can usually donate a pint of blood without
endangering your health. Within 24 hours of a blood donation, your body
replaces the lost fluids. In fact there are many people who have donated
blood more than 100 times in their life.
How many times can you give blood?
You must wait at least eight weeks (56 days) between donations of whole
blood and 16 weeks (112 days) between Power Red donations. Platelet
apheresis donors may give every 7 days up to 24 times per year.

 The only source of blood is human being.
 Therefore, it Is the social responsibility of the person to come forward and
voluntarily donate blood.
 In view of this, there is a risk of paid and professional donor donating
blood as family donors.
 Their by, increasing the risks of transmission of diseases like AIDS,
Hepatitis B & C, Malaria and many other diseases in the society.
 Hence, a donor who donates blood regularly every 3 to 4 months & tests
negative for the above diseases, would become a safe blood.
How much blood can be taken?
 Our body has 5.5 liter of blood of which only 350ml to 450ml of blood is
taken.
 The withdrawn blood volume is restored within 24 hours & hemoglobin
and cell components are restored in 2 months.
 It is safe to donate blood every 3 months.
Instructions to blood donors before
blood donation
 Take light refreshment/food before blood donation.
 Drink some liquid like tea, coffee, cold drink, juice etc. to replenish fluid &
some biscuits or snacks.
