ABSTRACT
In today’s world, technologic developments bring social
and economic benefits to large sections of society;
however, the health consequences of these developments
can be difficult to predict and manage.
With rapid advancement in technologies and
communications, children are increasingly exposed to
MWRs at earlier ages which causes damaging health
effects, especially whose brains are fragile and still
developing.
INTRODUCTION
Microwaves are a form of electromagnetic radiation with
wavelengths ranging from one meter to one millimeter;
with frequencies between 300 MHz and 300 GHz.
Microwave radiation effect can be classified as:
1. Thermal
2. Non-thermal.
1. The thermal effect refers to the heat that is generated
due to absorption of microwave radiation.
2. Non-Thermal Effects deals with effects inside the
biological cells of the body.
CHILDREN ABSORB MORE
MWR THAN ADULTS
Children absorb MWR 2x more in the brain and 10x
more in bone marrow than adults.
Hypothalamus & Cerebellum of children absorb 3.1x –
2.5x higher MWR compared to adults.
This is because of their:
Thinner skulls.
Brain tissue is more
absorbent.
More prone to radiation.
MWR:CLASS 2B
CARCINOGEN
 World Health Organization declared MWR as Class
2B Carcinogen which means MWR is a conceivable
cancer causing agent, which typically develops brain
tumors or leukemia.
 Children are at greater risk
than adults when exposed
to possible human
carcinogen which means
the more youthful the kid,
the higher the hazard.
MAJOR SOURCE OF
RADIATION
RADIATION
SOURCE
IN
INDIA
 Wireless device emits high enough radiation
to reach base stations.
 Depending on the level of exposure, it affects the
human body physically.
 These radiation spurs the body’s natural defense
mechanisms, which increases risk of cancer
development.
 Cellphone and Wi-Fi have brought those things
down to the street, integrated them into the
environment.
ADVERSE EFFECT OF
MWR
 SLEEP DISRUPTION  HEADACHE
 LACK OF CONCENTRATION  FORGETFUL MEMORY
 DEPRESSION TENDENCY  FATIGUE
 VISUAL DISORDERS  CARDIOVASCULAR PROBLEMS
 DIZZINESS  PALPITATIONS OF THE HEART
 BUZZING IN THE HEAD  ALTERED REFLEXES
Alzheimer’s/ Parkinson's
Hearing Impairment
Cancer
Electromagnetic
Hypersensitivity
Syndrome
Infertility
MICROWAVE
RADIATION
INCREASING RISK WITH
TECHNOLOGY
Today 6hr Wi-Fi at
smart schools + 8 hr
Wi-Fi at home + 24 hr
microwave radiation
from personal phone
+ 2 hour gaming +
online lessons and
tuitions etc.
For every 100 hours of use, risk of brain cancer
increases with 1.4% for 2G phones, 4.7% for 3G
smart phones and 5.4% for 4G smartphones.
Riskin%
DEVICE CERTIFICATION
The FCC has endorsed a procedure to certify the exposure
limit:
Specific Anthropomorphic Mannequin (SAM) process.
Specific Anthropomorphic Mannequin is the most ideal
approach to calculate the measure of MWR assimilated in
tissues for a long time.
This technique adjusts extremely well to the tissue models.
The SAM procedure depends
on a plastic mannequin.
A fluid with properties of the 40
tissues of the brain is filled in a
gap at the highest point of this
head.
An automated arm with an electric field is situated
inside the mannequin to test and display SAR value.
SPECIFIC ABSORPTION
RATE (SAR)
 Specific absorption rate (SAR) is a measure of the
rate at which energy is absorbed by the human
body when exposed to a RF field.
 India, adopted the FCC norms for cellphone, only
the handsets with SAR value of 1.6W/kg, averaged
over a 6 minutes’ period over a mass of 1 gram of
human tissue would be permitted to be
manufactured or imported in India.
SAR= σ Ei
2
/ρ
where:
σ = conductivity of body tissue s/m,
ρ = density of body tissue in kg/m3,
Ei = rms of value electric field in the
tissue V/m
SAR Measurement Equipment
Basic Measurement Procedure
MEASUREMENT OF SAR
RADIATION SHIELD
A Radiation Shield consists of
multiple polarized monopole
ferromagnetic aluminum which are
packed in non conductive material
to reflect the harmful radiation.
By placing shielding in the path of
radiation it reflects back 10% to
50% of radiation depending upon
its placement and direction of
source of radiation.
Multiple units can reflect radiation
up to 80% to 90% depending on the
radiation quality and the shield
thickness.
It also has a LED which lights up
when a strong radiation source is
brought close to it.
SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS
 Avoid frequent use if the signal strength is low.
 Keep the phone and particularly the antenna as far
as possible from your head.
 Limit usage as much as possible if pregnant,
radiation hazard is more in children than adults.
 Eat green vegetables and sleep in a dark room to
enhance natural repair of DNA that may have been
damaged by radiation.
Things to reduce the adverse effects radiation
exposure:
 Switch off your phone when
not in use & turn off your
wireless router at night to
minimize exposure to
radiation, keep mobile
phone away from bed while
sleeping.
 Charging phone creates a
high level of radiation, so
charge it in another place.
AWARENESS AMONG
PEOPLE
 Use a wireless hands-free system (headphone, headset)
with a low power Bluetooth emitter to reduce radiation
to the head.
 When buying a cell phone, make sure it has a low SAR.
 People having active medical implants should keep their
cell phone at least 30 cm away from the implant at times.
 Using a mobile phone in an open area, not inside a
vehicle so that the phone receives a good signal and
transmits at lower level.
CONCLUSION
The current exposure limits are inadequate and is needed
to be revised based on health safety standards guidelines
according to Indian epidemiological studies.
We should contribute more efforts to transform
communication into an efficient and convenient system
for the welfare and positive advancement for the global
society.
THANK YOU

  • 3. ABSTRACT In today’s world, technologic developments bring social and economic benefits to large sections of society; however, the health consequences of these developments can be difficult to predict and manage. With rapid advancement in technologies and communications, children are increasingly exposed to MWRs at earlier ages which causes damaging health effects, especially whose brains are fragile and still developing.
  • 4. INTRODUCTION Microwaves are a form of electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths ranging from one meter to one millimeter; with frequencies between 300 MHz and 300 GHz. Microwave radiation effect can be classified as: 1. Thermal 2. Non-thermal. 1. The thermal effect refers to the heat that is generated due to absorption of microwave radiation. 2. Non-Thermal Effects deals with effects inside the biological cells of the body.
  • 5. CHILDREN ABSORB MORE MWR THAN ADULTS Children absorb MWR 2x more in the brain and 10x more in bone marrow than adults. Hypothalamus & Cerebellum of children absorb 3.1x – 2.5x higher MWR compared to adults. This is because of their: Thinner skulls. Brain tissue is more absorbent. More prone to radiation.
  • 6. MWR:CLASS 2B CARCINOGEN  World Health Organization declared MWR as Class 2B Carcinogen which means MWR is a conceivable cancer causing agent, which typically develops brain tumors or leukemia.  Children are at greater risk than adults when exposed to possible human carcinogen which means the more youthful the kid, the higher the hazard.
  • 8.  Wireless device emits high enough radiation to reach base stations.  Depending on the level of exposure, it affects the human body physically.  These radiation spurs the body’s natural defense mechanisms, which increases risk of cancer development.  Cellphone and Wi-Fi have brought those things down to the street, integrated them into the environment.
  • 9. ADVERSE EFFECT OF MWR  SLEEP DISRUPTION  HEADACHE  LACK OF CONCENTRATION  FORGETFUL MEMORY  DEPRESSION TENDENCY  FATIGUE  VISUAL DISORDERS  CARDIOVASCULAR PROBLEMS  DIZZINESS  PALPITATIONS OF THE HEART  BUZZING IN THE HEAD  ALTERED REFLEXES
  • 11. INCREASING RISK WITH TECHNOLOGY Today 6hr Wi-Fi at smart schools + 8 hr Wi-Fi at home + 24 hr microwave radiation from personal phone + 2 hour gaming + online lessons and tuitions etc. For every 100 hours of use, risk of brain cancer increases with 1.4% for 2G phones, 4.7% for 3G smart phones and 5.4% for 4G smartphones. Riskin%
  • 12. DEVICE CERTIFICATION The FCC has endorsed a procedure to certify the exposure limit: Specific Anthropomorphic Mannequin (SAM) process. Specific Anthropomorphic Mannequin is the most ideal approach to calculate the measure of MWR assimilated in tissues for a long time. This technique adjusts extremely well to the tissue models.
  • 13. The SAM procedure depends on a plastic mannequin. A fluid with properties of the 40 tissues of the brain is filled in a gap at the highest point of this head. An automated arm with an electric field is situated inside the mannequin to test and display SAR value.
  • 14. SPECIFIC ABSORPTION RATE (SAR)  Specific absorption rate (SAR) is a measure of the rate at which energy is absorbed by the human body when exposed to a RF field.  India, adopted the FCC norms for cellphone, only the handsets with SAR value of 1.6W/kg, averaged over a 6 minutes’ period over a mass of 1 gram of human tissue would be permitted to be manufactured or imported in India. SAR= σ Ei 2 /ρ where: σ = conductivity of body tissue s/m, ρ = density of body tissue in kg/m3, Ei = rms of value electric field in the tissue V/m
  • 15. SAR Measurement Equipment Basic Measurement Procedure MEASUREMENT OF SAR
  • 16. RADIATION SHIELD A Radiation Shield consists of multiple polarized monopole ferromagnetic aluminum which are packed in non conductive material to reflect the harmful radiation. By placing shielding in the path of radiation it reflects back 10% to 50% of radiation depending upon its placement and direction of source of radiation.
  • 17. Multiple units can reflect radiation up to 80% to 90% depending on the radiation quality and the shield thickness. It also has a LED which lights up when a strong radiation source is brought close to it.
  • 18. SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS  Avoid frequent use if the signal strength is low.  Keep the phone and particularly the antenna as far as possible from your head.  Limit usage as much as possible if pregnant, radiation hazard is more in children than adults.  Eat green vegetables and sleep in a dark room to enhance natural repair of DNA that may have been damaged by radiation. Things to reduce the adverse effects radiation exposure:
  • 19.  Switch off your phone when not in use & turn off your wireless router at night to minimize exposure to radiation, keep mobile phone away from bed while sleeping.  Charging phone creates a high level of radiation, so charge it in another place.
  • 20. AWARENESS AMONG PEOPLE  Use a wireless hands-free system (headphone, headset) with a low power Bluetooth emitter to reduce radiation to the head.  When buying a cell phone, make sure it has a low SAR.  People having active medical implants should keep their cell phone at least 30 cm away from the implant at times.  Using a mobile phone in an open area, not inside a vehicle so that the phone receives a good signal and transmits at lower level.
  • 21. CONCLUSION The current exposure limits are inadequate and is needed to be revised based on health safety standards guidelines according to Indian epidemiological studies. We should contribute more efforts to transform communication into an efficient and convenient system for the welfare and positive advancement for the global society.
