The document discusses the whole language approach to teaching language. It is focused on teaching language as a whole rather than in fragmented pieces. There are eight components of the whole language approach including reading aloud, journal writing, sustained silent reading, shared reading, guided reading, guided writing, independent reading, and independent writing. The whole language classroom is characterized by things for students to read and edit, learning from models, working at an appropriate ability level, shared responsibility, active meaning making, risk-taking, and feedback from teachers and peers. Teachers continuously assess students through observing their writing, listening, discussions, speaking, and play.
