Behind Closed Doors In Girl By Jamaica Kincaid
After diving much into the short story, Girl by Jamaica Kincaid, a casual reader would
nonchalantly read this short story, and observe the strict mentoring or teaching aspect. Like
most stories there should be a sense of curiosity when we read them. Inspecting this story on a
more personal level has opened many doors of speculation. Applying the phrase behind closed
doors literally, we are going to dive deeper into the story. Looking not only at the story itself, but
also finding nits and bits of the story that gives a larger insight on the writer and her intentions. As
briefly stated before, the story leans more towards the strict aspect. It involves a young girl, a
daughter specifically, being lectured on ways to be lady like or depending... Show more content on

Kincaid, being from the two Caribbean island of Antigua and Barbuda, is basically Caribbean.
Which could give the story more of a different feel, depending on where it takes place. Being
raised in a Caribbean household, and having mostly Caribbean friends, I was widely exposed to
this lifestyle. The parents were harsher towards their children, when punishing or giving lectures.
Another point which gives hint to the Caribbean viewpoint is the phrase that comes up in the
story. Which says but I don t sing benna on Sundays at all and never in Sunday school. Two point
of views come out of this, one being the idea of benna, which is simply Calypso music. Which is a
music that originated in the Caribbean islands. Another being the emphasis on the day of Sunday.
Minor sentence, but gives a lot of information in the few words it gives. Growing up my mother not
only spoke about church, but emphasized going on Sundays, which is different for many different
backgrounds. Jewish being a prime example, considering they attend temple on Saturday. So taking
into consideration the author and key terms used in the story, it could point to a culture. And with
culture comes a lifestyle and practice which should be taken into much consideration when reading
stories from unknown

My Semester Into Advanced Psychological Foundations Of...
Learning and Teaching
Introduction
As I review my semester in Advanced Psychological Foundations of Education, I m aware of all
the tools I have collected over the past few months. Learning strategics, such as: social
constructivism, emotional competence and myths about dual language learners will now become
part of my planning resources as I prepare lesson plans for my students. During our three face to
face sessions, there were three topics that spoke to me as an teacher the most: classroom community
agreements, moral behavior and culture in the classroom. I would like to discuss how these themes
have enhance teaching and learning skills for my students and myself as an lifetime learner.
Classroom community agreements
Professional and personally, I will usually partake in an idea when, a theme states, agreement in
the title. I ve always appreciate ways of bring my students and I to a united front. The classroom
community agreement provided open communication, and is co created by the whole group to
make something easier for everyone (J.Hart, personal communication, August 29, 2015). In my
preschool class this year, I was able to use classroom community agreement tool on our first day,
September 1st, 2015. Just like our face to face meeting, I used this tool to establish our guild
lines for respectful ways in our classroom. I wrote our guild lines on a large poster board and
everyone signed the bottom of the paper even, our center site manager. My

million gallons of oil to be spilled into the Gulf of Mexico, killing 11 workers in what is said to be
the worst oil spill in history (Weber, 2010). Mission, Vision, and Values Statements
The mission and vision statement at BP is based upon value statements and a code of conduct.
They want to be recognized as a great company that is competitively successful and a force for
progress. For example, they believe that they can make a difference in the world by meeting the
growing demands for heat, light and mobility. To accomplish this, they plan to produce energy that
is affordable, secure, and doesn t damage the environment ( How we run, n.d.).
The core values that drive their mission are: progressive, responsible, innovative and performance

A Long Way Gone Freedom Analysis
Since the beginning of A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, the protagonist of the novel Ishmael
endeavors to flee from the hardships enkindled by the RUF rebel organization that has
amalgamated the country of Sierra Leone, officially making it a war zone. Moreover, for more
than two years Ishmael has attempted to escape from the rebels, moving from village to village,
rummaging through abandoned homes. Seemingly, the rebels would make their way to
Ishmael, sweeping all villages. Deprived of food or any sign of hope surviving as a lone wolf ,
Ishmael enlisted in the Army of Sierra Leone to fight against the radical organization. Ishmael
risked his life for the prime purpose of surviving and to pursue freedom. Furthermore, self
determination was one of the reasons for such bravery, but it was also due to specific objects that
aided in Ishmael s journey for freedom. Nonetheless, in his literary work, A Long Way Gone:
Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, Ishmael Beah uses symbols to underscore his central theme of
oppression and/or freedom. The most evident symbols that accentuate the theme of oppression and
/or freedom are the moon, the rap cassette tape, and the AK 47.
The moon s role in Ishmael s journey is very prominent, as it exhibits the theme of freedom also
oppression in the novel. When Ishmael is in dire need of comfort he looks to the moon for help
when struggling to survive the civil war alone. Furthermore, the moon for many in Sierra Leone
portray the moon as a symbol of peace

John Bowlby Maternal Deprivation Essay
Maternal Deprivation Studies
The underlying assumption of Bowlby s Maternal Deprivation Hypothesis is that continual
disruption of the attachment between infant and primary caregiver could result in long term
cognitive, social, and emotional difficulties for that infant.
John Bowlby created the maternal deprivation hypothesis attachment. It claimed that it was
essential for a child s psychological health to form an attachment to its mother figure. He said that
the young child s hunger for his mother s love and presence is as great as his hunger for food.
Bowlby held the view that if a child lacked an attachment to a mother figure it could have major
effects on its development. It was a model, which focused on the negative consequences. Bowlby ...

In the context of attachment, deprivation happens when a child who has experienced attachment, is
separated for a period from their primary attachment figure.
Privation happens when a child has never been able to form any attachments. The opportunity to
form the attachment bond was never there, so it did not form.
The effects of privation on Genie girl, Curtiss in 1989 reported the case of this girl, who spent
most of her childhood locked in a room at her home in Los Angeles. She came to the attention of
the social services department when she was 13 years old. She looked like a child half her age,
could not stand erect, and could not speak. She never fully recovered, socially or linguistically.
This may have been due to her extreme early emotional privation, as suggested by Bowlby. It may
also have been for a variety of other reasons, such as that she might have originally been retarded.
The effects of privation on Czechoslovakian twins, Koluchova in 1976 studied twins who had
spent the first seven years of their lives locked up. When they were discovered, they could not
talk. They were then looked after by two loving sisters and by age 14 had near normal intellectual
and social functioning. By the age 20, they were of above average intelligence and had excellent

interesting quotes in the movie. The problem we re trying to solve is that there are rich teams

And now we ve been gutted. We re like organ donors for the rich. Boston s taken our kidneys,

Thesis For Hamlet Essay
Literary Thesis Essay William Shakespeare has changed the way that many people have viewed
plays and literature throughout his life and is still carrying that legacy to this day. This is most
prominent in his famous tragedy, Hamlet, which is still analyzed for its success as a renowned
classic. The story is about a prince named Hamletwho meets his Father s ghost and learns of their
murder by his uncle. The story continues by depicting Hamlet s revenge and his falling into
madness. Hamlet illustrates masterful uses of literary devices in the use of euphemisms, imagery,
and similes to create an interesting tragedythat changed the outlook on literature as a whole.
Shakespeare has indisputable skill in mastery over literary devices that shape themselves into an
heart wrenching masterpiece. Euphemisms form excellent literature by provoking thoughtful
insight within texts to decipher what would otherwise be seen as blunt or obvious. In hamlet, the
euphemism, For thoughtand the trifling of his favor, Hold it a fashion and a toy in blood, A violet
in the youth of primy nature, (Act 1, Scene 3, ln. 5 7) plays on Hamlet s attitude, hinting to ideas
much more vile than what is initially spoken. This allows for readers to interpret Hamlet in
varying senses. The quote, I saw him enter such a house of sale videlicet a brothel, or so forth...
(Act 2, Scene 1, ln. 61 62) utilizes phrasing to avoid the use of less appetizing words. This helps in
the aid to avoid blunt terms and add

The Impact Of Technology On Nonverbal Communication
Communicating through social media and technology can sometimes be challenging, what are
these challenges and how does this affect the nonverbal communication; and do you think this form
of communication causes inabilities to interact positively and work effectively with others. While
communicating through new technologies and social media can be challenging at times for some,
one must also remember that nonverbal behaviors can be important in establishing trust in working
relationships, but modern technologies may challenge our ability to maintain that trust (Nelson

Written reports on the other hand give executives, managers, and supervisor s detailed information
as to their overall progress on projected tasks within different departments; and overall company

the shortest kind of written communication to be that of form, which may be used to collect

While non verbal behaviors can affect many different communication styles, communicating while

At the beginning of the rebel of 1916 was considered as a minor one by Russian authorities. In
reality, it led to prolonged consequences. Question on whether the suppression of a revolt was
prepared or not is a source for debate amongst historians. While some of them seem to have
reasonable arguments on the preparedness of the Tsarist administration, others try to persuade the
contrary. The Ryskulov`s work Vosstanie Kirgizov i Kazakhov v 1916 godu. Sbornik Materialov

Race Relations in Modern American Society
Race relations are an ever prominent issue in American society. Controversies focusing around race
are a commonly seen smeared across the front page of the newspaper or headlining on the evening

many Blacks to refer to the overwhelming power stemming from white racist tendencies. This racial

today face many of the same acts of individual racism as Blacks but there is even more of a

total assimilation and often directly impact one s quality of life. Items such as zoning laws,
housing and employment availability and quality of education seem to be set up so that these

Mexicans have to deal with institutional racism in immigration laws. Many theorists believe that
this is the reason Blacks seem to be confined to the ghetto and Mexicans to the barrio. Many of
those who have been unable to escape their surroundings have chosen to separated rather than

The Effects Of Social Stories On The Classroom For...
Elementary students who lack vocabulary to successfully express themselves may use
aggression to obtain their wants and needs. A social story can be defined as a story written to
allow a child to emphasize a social skill such as how to ask for a turn, usually after a troublesome
behavior occurs such as displaying aggression. Social stories can be used successfully as an
intervention in the classroom for children ages 4 5 for teaching and modeling appropriate social
behaviors. Using social stories alone may not be as successful as the use of social stories

Character Analysis Of Cannery Row
Cannery Row is a town located in Monterey, California. Despite being small, dirty and crowded,
it is a well functioned town and is home to people from different walks of life. In the novel s
prologue, John Steinbeck wrote the following: Its inhabitants are, as one man once said, whores,
pimps, gamblers, and sons of bitches by which he meant Everybody and [have] the man looked
through another peephole he might have said: Saints and angels and martyrs and holy men, and
he would have meant the same thing (Steinbeck 1). He basically comments that the difference in
viewpoints given the same event results from the power of perspective and duality observed in
people. One might see Cannery Row as a low down place while the others might see Cannery
Row as a lively, vigorous town. One would see a character s actions disputable while the others
would see their behaviors admirable. The viewpoints of readers and the way characters behave at
various times explain the fact that Cannery Row and its inhabitants possess qualities crossing good
and evil.
Cannery Row begins with the character Lee Chong, a small grocery owner that supplies the
town. Lee was depicted as a kind and generous man, and his good nature was reflected through
his appearance and personality. Steinbeck states that [his] mouth was full and benevolent and the
flash of gold when he smiled was rich and warm (Steinbeck 7). This simple passage gives us a clear
first impression of what Lee Chong was like, a man with a

Under the oak tree, Freddy sat playing in the mud. Rolling a piece of mud between his hands, he
eyed the distance between him and Seymour. Taking a small hop closer to the pond, he checked
the distance again. Drawing his arm back, he threw the mud ball at Seymour. Lucky for Seymour,
Freddy s aim was a little off. The mud ball hit the water next to Seymour s head splashing him.
The shock of water on his face shot him straight up, arms waving about. Then he came straight

Rehabilitation and Recidivism

Abstract
Over many years there has been great debate about whether rehabilitation reduces the rate of
recidivism in criminal offenders. There has been great controversy over whether anything works
to reduce recidivism and great hope that rehabilitation would offer a reduction in those rates. In
this paper I will introduce information and views on the reality of whether rehabilitation does
indeed reduce recidivism. Proposed is a quasi experiment, using a group of offenders that received
rehabilitation services and an ex post facto group that did not? I intend to prove that rehabilitation

Cullen amp; Gendreau (2000). Cullen and Gendreau (2000). give us some history on the restorative
incarceration. The original theory of restorative justice was based on simple human behavior
regulated by incentive instead of punishment, which instituted the concept of parole as a means of
reward for a prisoner for rehabilitation. Further studies in criminology proved that this idea was too
simplistic and married it to the positivist theory of criminology and instituted individual assessment
and treatment for each prisoner based on their specific needs for reformation.
As Rothman (1980) and many others have pointed out, this ideal system was never implemented as
intended. Although the contours of the correctional system changed the juvenile court,
indeterminate sentencing, probation, parole, and discretion became integral features of this system
the resources and knowledge needed to provide effective treatment to offenders were in short
supply. Cullen and Gendreau (2000).
Cullen and Gendreau compare and contrast the many studies on this subject, the meta analyses
conclusions, their strengths, weaknesses, inconsistencies, and the trends that follow the studies of
the time. They offer their insight on effective corrections and individualizing treatments based on
predictors for crime and behavioral knowledge, as well as conclude that recidivism is reduced by
rehabilitation.

This Boy’s Life by Tobias Wolff Essay
The book This Boy s Life by Tobias Wolff is a memoir written about the author s childhood
memories and experiences. The author shows many different characters within the book. Many of
them are just minor character that does not affect the author much in his life choices and thoughts
throughout his growth. But there are some that acts as the protagonist and some the antagonist.
One of them is Dwight, the protagonist s or Jack s stepfather. This character seems to be one of
the characters that inhibit Jack s choices and decisions. This character plays a huge role in Jack s
life as it leaves a huge scar in his memory. The author here spends the majority of time in this

This proves to be a mask that somehow gives an impression to the reader that Dwight is trying to
hide something away from Jack and his mother. Another mask that Dwight wears is that of a
mask that portrays himself to be a good, charismatic and somewhat strong willed father figure to
Jack. This mask instead portrays a contradiction towards the father figure that Jack really wants.
Dwight indulges himself in self satisfaction of the methods that he thinks suited Jack the most
instead of the things that Jack needed from a parent, such as security and support. These scenes
are shown during the part where Dwight uses Jack s Winchester rifle to shoot and comments
badly about the equipment and breaking his promise to allow Jack to shoot in the gun range.
These few masks that Dwight adorned proved to be the start of Jack s distrust as many promises
were broken and only went as far as imaginations. This later corroded Jack s true self of freedom
and happiness as Dwight proved to be a disappointment for both Jack and his mother. Later on,
Dwight sells Jack s Winchester rifle, taking away the only thing that Jack truly enjoys and feels
comfortable with. In this book, Jack is tortured numerous times, both physically and

Biblical References Of Biblical Texts
According to Tweed, religious spaces are differentiated , kinetic and interrelated . What s more, the
depiction of Jerusalem in the biblical texts justifies the presence of these characteristics in this
pivotal space for three major religions; God s high recognition of Jerusalem and people s
entrenched belief that Godis in the city and therefore their fearlessness against any potential disaster
as shown in the Bibleillustrates the uniqueness and thus the differentiated ness of this city; the
downfall of the city conforms to Tweed s statement, [spaces] change over time , or the kinetic
nature of religious spaces; the monetary cost and artistic precision necessary for building the First
Temple, which alludes to the economic and cultural strengths of the area, elaborates on the
interrelated feature of the religious spaces. (Tweed 2011:120) It is these qualities of Jerusalem
found in the Bible that make it this holy and profane religious space, awing the devotees from all
over the world. Tweed states in the article that religious spaces are differentiated in that they are
more or less special , singular , or set apart . (Tweed 2011:119). These differentiated spaces, unlike
unnamed generic locales, can sensorially touch the devotees and affect their daily life, no matter
the geographical distance in between or even whether the devotees have experienced the sites in

The Economic Crisis Is the Greater Challenge than...
Globalization (a process) centers on improving the efficiency and speed that economies interact and
transform interconnectivity between sovereign nations political, social and economic cultures. For
centuries, globalized improvements in infrastructure (communication, economies, trade, and ideas)
have allowed sovereigns to improve interdependence with others. This essay will present why the
economic crisis, a global issue, is the greater challenge than pandemics to U.S. national interest.
Regarding pandemic challenges, the U.S. has among the world s best health care. The ability of the
Center for Disease Control (CDC) to respond to pandemics is better than any other nation. Over the
last 100 years, influenza pandemics have been among the leading cause of infectious deaths.
Technological advances have expanded understanding of complex pandemics and have improved
our ability to contain outbreaks or manipulate micro genomes. Caution should be considered as the
same scientific knowledge can be deliberately misused.
The U.S. works with countries, addressing infectious diseases that slow socioeconomic and
democratic development, as well as the humanitarian emergencies and civil conflicts that pandemics
contribute to. Infectious disease related embargoes and restrictions on travel and immigration can
cause economic frictions among sovereign states. Deployed U.S. military personnel will be at low
to moderate risk from pandemics yet, at the highest risk while deployed in

Indonesia Needs Sex Education in Order to Combat Unwanted...
A. Reproductive health services have and currently do struggle against obstacles including religious
beliefs, governmental policies, educational shortcomings, and governmental financial
circumstances. With the increase in reproductive health medicine and technology, an increase for
the global standard of living, and women s rights movements worldwide, global access to
reproductive health services is becoming more and more of a priority. Topics such as abortion and

This will help prevent infant fatalities, infant malnourishment, and maternal fatality during birth.
C. Indonesia s proposition to achieve these goals and to provide global access to reproductive
health services is quite simple. The committee should make a resolution which requires
governments to create and fund a board which is given the task to provide the citizens of the
country (ranging from youths to young adults to adults to the elderly) with adequate education in
relation to sexual intercourse and the consequences of intercourse and all other sex related issues.
The board would also provide various contraceptives for either free (funds permitting) or as
discounted as possible. The board would have to provide various contraceptives in order to meet
the standards of the individual receiving the contraception s religious beliefs. This would help
significantly reduce sexual related problems seen in today s world, such as abortion, STDs, and
unwanted pregnancy.

Whale Rider Belonging
Whale rider is told in the context of a Maori tribe in modern New Zealand. The movie tells the
story of a young girl, Pai, and her grandfather Karo, who must struggle with adapting a patriarchal
Maori legend with the Pai s seeming affinity with sacred traditions. The music in this movie
underscores each scene and leaves the viewer feeling moved emotionally. Music tells the audience
how they should be feeling and what emotions they should be experiencing. It adds scale and
dramatizes events.
Music in movies is crucial to manipulate our emotions towards the scene. Incorporating music
into films will not only make the final outcome more interesting, but it also allows the audience
the ability to connect emotionally to characters and their situation, also reinforcing the story and
/or message. Music can also work very well to make clear the heritage of a character/group of
characters or the geographic setting of the movie or a scene. If for example Chinese or Japanese
sounding music can be heard during a certain scene, the audience can easily spot where it is taking
place without the need of visually establishing the location too much. Music also has the ability to
clear the time frame of the movie. For example if classical music is being heard in the film, the
audience are able to easily recognize that the movie is set in an older period of time. ... Show more

A Review of the Book Calabash Parkway
At first glance, Dr. Brenda DoHarris Calabash Parkway appears to be a novel about a Guyanese
woman meeting an old friend from her native land, in New York, after several years. Upon further
reading, the novel has resilient records of feminism in the protagonists Agatha, Evadne, and
Gwennie. The three are emasculated by poverty, neglect, and abuse. Living in a masculinized
country the three women refuse to succumb to their struggles of life. These powerless
characteristics of the three young women are overcome after immigrating to New York and
Canada. The first reflection of feminism is Gatha s life of poverty. The shadow of political tyranny
and economic malaise loomed over the country (DoHarris 6)1.Those living in Guyana struggled to

New York where he currently resides. Dr. DoHarris expounds that: Not only had Evadne been
able to snag a bridegroom, but she secured one who would be able to wisk her off de mudflat,
thousands of miles away from the stich by miserable stich existence to which she had thought
she was irrevocably wed (39). Nor are Evadne s struggles in New York any less compelling than
Gatha s. Indeed, in some ways, they may be more so; for Evadne s relationship with Compton
becomes complicated when his former lover Jennifer gives birth to his daughter, Joy; and when
Evadne and Compton buy a house from Jennifer s sister the complications erupt with Jennifer
shooting and killing Compton (DoHarris qtd in Birbalsingh p.131). Gwennie, like Evadne, struggles

Her frequent visiting of the clubbing scene was actually how she got noticed. She landed a

her up for an R B group. The R B group quickly fell apart, but Pink was determined, and was able to
find another group to join. That second group was picked up by LaFace Records, and eventually
the label signed Pink as a solo artist and her first album Can t Take Me Home was produced.
Two million albums and three top 40 singles later, Pink was asked to do the remake of LaBelle s

The Seventh Man Short Story
The improbable idea of guilt rushes through everyone at one time or another. We often find
ourselves forgiving people or placing blame on ourselves for inadequate reasons. In the story
The Seventh Man by Haruki Murakami, the Seventh Man s best friend K is swept away by a
tsunami. For years, The Seventh Man refuses to forgive himself for the incident. At a young age,
he inhabits the quality to run from fear. Moving to a new town and changing his life, the
Seventh Man doesn t learn to forgive himself till 40 years later when seeing K s paintings. He

were unable to save them. She calls this survival guilt. Soldiers in war regularly wonder why they
get to live when others tragically died. They have trouble comprehending what made them lucky
enough to live when they consider themselves no more of a hero than the next guy? In the same

It is for that reason that the attachment and care giving systems are at the heart of that crucial first
relationship.
Attachment theory is the key to understanding relational patterns (Kahn 1991). Mary Ainsworth
(???) states that the whole bases of a successful childhood should come from curiosity, questioning
and explorations. Infants are inevitability closely attached to their parents.
Attachment theory was developed by John Bowlby during his observation of evacuated children
during World War II and it describes the dynamics of long term relationships. Its most important
tenet is that an infant needs to develop a healthy relationship with at least one primary caregiver for
social and emotional development to occur normally and that further relationships are built on the
patterns developed in the earliest relationship (Bowlby 1988).
A healthy attachment leads a happy, secure base for a child (Holmes 1993). Positive attachment
occurs where the parents are consistently attentive to the needs of the child and provide a secure
base from which the child can confidently explore the world and it s surrounding (Bowlby 1988).
Inevitably, a worried child with problems will complain and distanced (Bowlby 1988). This pattern
reinforces itself and will continue into the next generation (Bowlby 1989).

as Heraclitus seems to believe. However, to demand demonstration (in the strict sense) would beg
the question, because it would lead to an infinite regress and there would still be no demonstration.
If the same thing both is and is not, then, for instance, a being can both exist and not exist
simultaneously, and the same thing can both be true and not be true simultaneously. To say that the
same thing both is and is not is to deny the first principle, and to refuse to be consistent (or follow
any logical truth). According to Aristotle, Heraclitus way of thinking is marked by circular
reasoning inasmuch as any rational being implicitly recognize the principle as self evident, and to

High School Schedule Essay
Many secondary schools are beginning to question the impact that a school schedule has on student
learning. Some schools are trying innovative schedules designed to provide choice and variety for
high school students. Recently, San Luis Obispo High School was asked by our Superintendent to
reconsider our current trimester schedule (see Appendices, Figure D) and review other alternative
schedules that would benefit the increasingly diverse students of San Luis Obispo. Students,
parents, and many teachers have been upset by this request and fail to see the validity of changing
the schedule. Teachers were told that the trimester schedule is inequitable as the three trimesters
equate to two semesters, thus students at SLOHS are receiving an unfair advantage over students at
our sister school, Morro Bay High School. Additionally, the claim was made that those students

and the problem of not seeing all students every day. Teachers at MBHS claim that students have
a difficult time staying focused in classes that last 110 minutes per day. Additionally, teachers do
not see all students every day, and sometimes even for multiple days when students are involved
in athletics. As MBHS went through the process of reviewing their daily schedule they focused
on reducing minutes based on periods taught and consistently seeing students every single day, or
at least four out of the five days of the week. MBHS staff devised a hybrid block semester
schedule (see Appendices, Figure G) which will go up against their traditional rotating block on the
ballot. Similiar to SLOHS, our Superintendent and Board of Eduaction will make the final decision

Researching National Cultures: an evaluation of Filipino and Australian Cultures
Introduction
The age of technology is at reach almost everywhere in the world. The world is considered as a
Global Village wherein the flawless movement of toil, people and data has become a commonplace.
It has been internationalized that communication between countries had become a prerequisite. By
this, being able to understand its traditions and culture plays a vital role due to its diverse
worldviews and often dissimilarity of values. The ability to prevent potential conflicts and foster
productive, cooperative relations will depend largely on effective intercultural relations .
(Communication between cultures, eight edition p. 4 2013)
The main core of this report is to compare and distinguish the divergence of Filipinos and Australian
national cultures. The focal point will be primarily about the incessant population growth of
Filipino migration in the northern Territory of Australia that ensued more than one hundred years
ago. According to the 2011 poll, there were 171, 233 Filipino people in Australia with an

Prejudice In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen s usage of letters allows the reader to fully
comprehend the situation and certain feelings of the characters. For example, the two letters sent
by Jane Bennet to Elizabeth Bennet in Chapter 46 allow the novel to arrive at a turning point in
many different aspects. The obvious purpose of the written letters is to inform the reader of the
events at hand regarding Lydia Bennet and Mr. Wickham. However, these letters allow changes to

Wickham as well as Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. However the seriousness of the situation in itself,
the relationship between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet is furthermore developed because of
these two letters. Elizabeth turns to Mr. Darcy as soon as he appears and immediately notifies
him of everything. This action of hers illustrates the budding closeness between the two and
how she relies on Darcy. Both Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy blame themselves for not exposing Mr.
Wickham as the vagrant that he truly is. Therefore, this shared guilt provides the nascent couple
with a strong emotional connection and a universal principle. A major factor of a couple s
relationship is how they react in times of distress. Do they turn to each other for support or
withdraw from one another? Elizabeth s reliance on Mr. Darcy is a foreshadowing of a wonderful
relationship to come for the couple. The two letters alone are a catalyst in exposing these emotions
that might otherwise be suppressed. The two letters will generally contribute to furthering the
development of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy s relationship. Perhaps the reasoning behind Lydia s
actions could be her family and their attitudes toward certain subjects such as men, romance, and
marriage. Mrs. Bennet is consistently pressuring her daughters to become married women in order
to ensure social status and financial security for the remainder of their lives. It seems that her only

Domestication In The Americas Essay
Moving away from Eastern Asia, it is now time to focus on the development of agriculture of the
Americas. In a similar way as to what happen in China, agriculture originated independently in
three different areas: Mesoamerica, the Andean region in South America and eastern, mid
continental North America. The earliest evidence for domesticates so far comes from
archaeobotanical remains found in caves, in all three origin centres. These remains are usually
recovered in a state of remarkably good preservation, as a result of the dry climate that prevents
the decay of organic materials. The caves in which these remains are discovered, usually also
display evidence for the presence of small groups of hunter gatherers. These particular aspects led
researchers to suggest that the domestication process in the Americaswas initiated by nomadic or
seminomadic groups of people, possibly in a higher setting, although this theory is now being
questioned by new lines of evidence (Smith, 1994: 174).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

to the areas of mid continental North America and the Andes. However, maize was not the first
plant to undergo the process in domestication in the Americas, and, even after having spread out
throughout the continent, people still consumed a variety of other plant species, with a few
differences depending on the specific region. For example, people in southwestern United Stated
maintained species such as beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), squash (Cucurbita pepo ssp. pepo), and
sunflower (Helianthus annuus var. macrocarpus) as important components of their diets, even after
the establishment of maize as a staple

The Bank Of England s Monetary Policy
This essay will examine how the Bank of England s Monetary Policy committee uses monetary
policy to control the main macro objectives such as inflation and balance of payments. It will
discuss how interest rates are determined through an equilibrium between money supply and
demand. Monetary policy is a macroeconomic policy laid down by the MPC to affect aggregate
demand using interest rates . The committee meets to set a bank rate with an aim to fix problems in
the economy. The Bank of England s main objective is to keep inflationat a target rate of 2% using

The bank of England uses several techniques to control interest rates. They do this in order to keep
the money market in equilibrium. Equilibrium interest rate is set where the money supply and
demand for money is the same, shown in the diagram below.
If the rate of interest began to rise above the equilibrium level there would be an excess supply of
money. This excess supply could be used to invest and buy bonds as people have more money
balances than they need. This will in turn push up bond prices and interest rates will begin to fall
due to the inverse relationship. Low interest rates encourage people to spend more. The
opportunity cost of spending is saving, if interest rates are lower, people will receive less interest
on their savings so there will now be a lower opportunity cost of spending. This spending will
increase demand to the point where it is back at equilibrium.
If the rate of interest then fell below the equilibrium level there would be excess demand of
money. This would mean that people do not have enough money for what they need. This will
mean that banks will sell bonds back to the government in return for cash lowering the bond price.
Interest rates will begin to rise and demand for money will decrease until equilibrium is reached .
If the open bank buys bonds, the cash the recipients receive is then deposited in banks allowing the
banks to credit create. This is then multiplied in

Harvest Table Observation
This last Monday I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Harvest Table in Brookings SD. It was
a wonderful and eye opening experience. Anna and I had planned to do a fun leaf activity where
children could color over leaves on paper or use paint to stamp the leaves on paper. As a teacher, I
had many thoughts run through my mind. As the children started to arrive over to our table, they
were interested to see what we had. They loved the feeling of the foam paint, but quickly lost
interest. The children seemed to be more comfortable at the tables with the activities and art from
the previous times. Many of these children need consistency in their life and these Monday nights
are probably that one event and time that they get that consistency.

Oligopoly: This is an industry with very little firms in the market. If they conspire, they weaken
output and raise profits the way a monopoly would and should do. For example the mobile
phone industry is an oligopoly what with so many companies for example Apple, LG and
Samsung all competing together. Supermarkets are oligopoly s as they make supernormal profits
as well. Monopolistic competition When an industry contains many rival firms, each of which
has a comparable but at least slightly different product. Restaurants, are an example, all serve
food but of different types of food and in different sites. Manufacture costs are above what could
be attained if firms sold equal products, but consumers have an advantage from the variety. The
Porter s Five Forces method is a simple for comprehending where power is within a business. This
is helpful, because it helps you realise both the strength of your current competing situation, and the
strength of a position you re debating moving to in the future. The five important forces are;
Supplier Power: This highlights that it is easy for suppliers to rise up their prices. This is
determined by the number of suppliers, the uniqueness of their product, their control over the buyer,
and the cost of changing from one buyer to another. The scarcer the supplier choices you might
have, and the more you need the help and that

  • 2. Behind Closed Doors In Girl By Jamaica Kincaid After diving much into the short story, Girl by Jamaica Kincaid, a casual reader would nonchalantly read this short story, and observe the strict mentoring or teaching aspect. Like most stories there should be a sense of curiosity when we read them. Inspecting this story on a more personal level has opened many doors of speculation. Applying the phrase behind closed doors literally, we are going to dive deeper into the story. Looking not only at the story itself, but also finding nits and bits of the story that gives a larger insight on the writer and her intentions. As briefly stated before, the story leans more towards the strict aspect. It involves a young girl, a daughter specifically, being lectured on ways to be lady like or depending... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kincaid, being from the two Caribbean island of Antigua and Barbuda, is basically Caribbean. Which could give the story more of a different feel, depending on where it takes place. Being raised in a Caribbean household, and having mostly Caribbean friends, I was widely exposed to this lifestyle. The parents were harsher towards their children, when punishing or giving lectures. Another point which gives hint to the Caribbean viewpoint is the phrase that comes up in the story. Which says but I don t sing benna on Sundays at all and never in Sunday school. Two point of views come out of this, one being the idea of benna, which is simply Calypso music. Which is a music that originated in the Caribbean islands. Another being the emphasis on the day of Sunday. Minor sentence, but gives a lot of information in the few words it gives. Growing up my mother not only spoke about church, but emphasized going on Sundays, which is different for many different backgrounds. Jewish being a prime example, considering they attend temple on Saturday. So taking into consideration the author and key terms used in the story, it could point to a culture. And with culture comes a lifestyle and practice which should be taken into much consideration when reading stories from unknown ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Learning strategics, such as: social constructivism, emotional competence and myths about dual language learners will now become part of my planning resources as I prepare lesson plans for my students. Classroom community agreements Professional and personally, I will usually partake in an idea when, a theme states, agreement in the title. I ve always appreciate ways of bring my students and I to a united front. The classroom community agreement provided open communication, and is co created by the whole group to make something easier for everyone (J.Hart, personal communication, August 29, 2015). In my preschool class this year, I was able to use classroom community agreement tool on our first day, September 1st, 2015. • 6. A Long Way Gone Freedom Analysis Since the beginning of A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, the protagonist of the novel Ishmael endeavors to flee from the hardships enkindled by the RUF rebel organization that has amalgamated the country of Sierra Leone, officially making it a war zone. Moreover, for more than two years Ishmael has attempted to escape from the rebels, moving from village to village, rummaging through abandoned homes. Seemingly, the rebels would make their way to Ishmael, sweeping all villages. Deprived of food or any sign of hope surviving as a lone wolf , Ishmael enlisted in the Army of Sierra Leone to fight against the radical organization. Ishmael risked his life for the prime purpose of surviving and to pursue freedom. Furthermore, self determination was one of the reasons for such bravery, but it was also due to specific objects that aided in Ishmael s journey for freedom. Nonetheless, in his literary work, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, Ishmael Beah uses symbols to underscore his central theme of oppression and/or freedom. The most evident symbols that accentuate the theme of oppression and /or freedom are the moon, the rap cassette tape, and the AK 47. The moon s role in Ishmael s journey is very prominent, as it exhibits the theme of freedom also oppression in the novel. When Ishmael is in dire need of comfort he looks to the moon for help when struggling to survive the civil war alone. Furthermore, the moon for many in Sierra Leone portray the moon as a symbol of peace ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. John Bowlby Maternal Deprivation Essay Maternal Deprivation Studies The underlying assumption of Bowlby s Maternal Deprivation Hypothesis is that continual disruption of the attachment between infant and primary caregiver could result in long term cognitive, social, and emotional difficulties for that infant. John Bowlby created the maternal deprivation hypothesis attachment. It claimed that it was essential for a child s psychological health to form an attachment to its mother figure. He said that the young child s hunger for his mother s love and presence is as great as his hunger for food. Bowlby held the view that if a child lacked an attachment to a mother figure it could have major effects on its development. It was a model, which focused on the negative consequences. Bowlby ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the context of attachment, deprivation happens when a child who has experienced attachment, is separated for a period from their primary attachment figure. Privation happens when a child has never been able to form any attachments. The opportunity to form the attachment bond was never there, so it did not form. The effects of privation on Genie girl, Curtiss in 1989 reported the case of this girl, who spent most of her childhood locked in a room at her home in Los Angeles. She came to the attention of the social services department when she was 13 years old. She looked like a child half her age, could not stand erect, and could not speak. She never fully recovered, socially or linguistically. This may have been due to her extreme early emotional privation, as suggested by Bowlby. It may also have been for a variety of other reasons, such as that she might have originally been retarded. The effects of privation on Czechoslovakian twins, Koluchova in 1976 studied twins who had spent the first seven years of their lives locked up. When they were discovered, they could not talk. They were then looked after by two loving sisters and by age 14 had near normal intellectual and social functioning. By the age 20, they were of above average intelligence and had excellent relationships with the members of their foster ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I would start my analysis with one of the many interesting quotes in the movie. The problem we re trying to solve is that there are rich teams and there are poor teams, then there s 50 feet of crap, and then there s us. It s an unfair game. And now we ve been gutted. We re like organ donors for the rich. Boston s taken our kidneys, Yankees have taken our heart. And you guys sit around talking the same old good body nonsense like we re selling jeans. Like we re looking for Fabio. We got to think differently. We are the last dog at the bowl. You see what happens to the runt of the litter? He dies. In the movie, Billy couldn t re sign Oakland s best 3 players after the 2001 season due to having a payroll a fraction of A s competitors. • 9. Thesis For Hamlet Essay Literary Thesis Essay William Shakespeare has changed the way that many people have viewed plays and literature throughout his life and is still carrying that legacy to this day. This is most prominent in his famous tragedy, Hamlet, which is still analyzed for its success as a renowned classic. The story is about a prince named Hamletwho meets his Father s ghost and learns of their murder by his uncle. The story continues by depicting Hamlet s revenge and his falling into madness. Hamlet illustrates masterful uses of literary devices in the use of euphemisms, imagery, and similes to create an interesting tragedythat changed the outlook on literature as a whole. Shakespeare has indisputable skill in mastery over literary devices that shape themselves into an heart wrenching masterpiece. Euphemisms form excellent literature by provoking thoughtful insight within texts to decipher what would otherwise be seen as blunt or obvious. In hamlet, the euphemism, For thoughtand the trifling of his favor, Hold it a fashion and a toy in blood, A violet in the youth of primy nature, (Act 1, Scene 3, ln. 5 7) plays on Hamlet s attitude, hinting to ideas much more vile than what is initially spoken. This allows for readers to interpret Hamlet in varying senses. The quote, I saw him enter such a house of sale videlicet a brothel, or so forth... (Act 2, Scene 1, ln. 61 62) utilizes phrasing to avoid the use of less appetizing words. This helps in the aid to avoid blunt terms and add ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She calls this survival guilt. Soldiers in war regularly wonder why they get to live when others tragically died. They have trouble comprehending what made them lucky enough to live when they consider themselves no more of a hero than the next guy? In the same manner, The Seventh Man felt a sense of responsibility for his friends death because he believed he could have stopped it. He feels guilty for not withholding his moral to ... She has witnessed through some years with wars and conflicts and she thought; through education this can be turned into peace to this world. Since the year 1907 Montessori name has been recognized in the education system. Even though it has been over a century to this date Montessori principles are as powerful as it was. Dr Maria Montessori has relied on her actual observations on children to develop her method of education. During these observations she has discovered that each child has their own urge to learn through their own way. She stressed that children will repeat the same thing over and over. For example a child in the nursery picking the same book each time he is asked to choose a book for teacher to read to children. Another example of a child in the nursery who is choosing the very same practical life transferring water with a turkey baster activity each morning at the arrival of the nursery and going back to it though out the day. It is for that reason that the attachment and care giving systems are at the heart of that crucial first relationship. Attachment theory is the key to understanding relational patterns (Kahn 1991). Mary Ainsworth (???) states that the whole bases of a successful childhood should come from curiosity, questioning and explorations. Infants are inevitability closely attached to their parents. Attachment theory was developed by John Bowlby during his observation of evacuated children during World War II and it describes the dynamics of long term relationships. Its most important tenet is that an infant needs to develop a healthy relationship with at least one primary caregiver for social and emotional development to occur normally and that further relationships are built on the patterns developed in the earliest relationship (Bowlby 1988). A healthy attachment leads a happy, secure base for a child (Holmes 1993). Positive attachment occurs where the parents are consistently attentive to the needs of the child and provide a secure base from which the child can confidently explore the world and it s surrounding (Bowlby 1988). Inevitably, a worried child with problems will complain and distanced (Bowlby 1988). This pattern reinforces itself and will continue into the next generation (Bowlby 1989). Mary ... According to Aristotle, Heraclitus claims that the same thing both is and is not, and this would imply that contraries belong to the same subject simultaneously. Heraclitus denies our ability to establish truth, and questions the reliability of knowledge: for Aristotle; serious philosophical consideration must be given to such skepticism, because the logical conclusion of this position has undesirable effects on metaphysical discussion. Moreover, if the principle could be demonstrated, then all things would be subject to demonstration, as Heraclitus seems to believe. In a similar way as to what happen in China, agriculture originated independently in three different areas: Mesoamerica, the Andean region in South America and eastern, mid continental North America. The earliest evidence for domesticates so far comes from archaeobotanical remains found in caves, in all three origin centres. These remains are usually recovered in a state of remarkably good preservation, as a result of the dry climate that prevents the decay of organic materials. The caves in which these remains are discovered, usually also display evidence for the presence of small groups of hunter gatherers. They do this in order to keep the money market in equilibrium. Equilibrium interest rate is set where the money supply and demand for money is the same, shown in the diagram below. If the rate of interest began to rise above the equilibrium level there would be an excess supply of money. This excess supply could be used to invest and buy bonds as people have more money balances than they need. This will in turn push up bond prices and interest rates will begin to fall due to the inverse relationship. Low interest rates encourage people to spend more. The opportunity cost of spending is saving, if interest rates are lower, people will receive less interest on their savings so there will now be a lower opportunity cost of spending. This spending will increase demand to the point where it is back at equilibrium. If the rate of interest then fell below the equilibrium level there would be excess demand of money. This would mean that people do not have enough money for what they need. This will mean that banks will sell bonds back to the government in return for cash lowering the bond price. Interest rates will begin to rise and demand for money will decrease until equilibrium is reached . If the open bank buys bonds, the cash the recipients receive is then deposited in banks allowing the banks to credit create. This is then multiplied in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Supermarkets are oligopoly s as they make supernormal profits as well. Monopolistic competition When an industry contains many rival firms, each of which has a comparable but at least slightly different product. Restaurants, are an example, all serve food but of different types of food and in different sites. Manufacture costs are above what could be attained if firms sold equal products, but consumers have an advantage from the variety.
