Manifest functions are those recognized and intended consequences that people
observe or expect in a social pattern or social institution. In the first book, On My
Way With Sesame Street:My ABC s, the main manifest function was to teach children
the alphabet. The multiple sets of the alphabet, along with the different vocabulary,
help to expand the vocabulary that the children develop. Along, with sentences
describing the words, there are pictures demonstrating them. The alphabet
demonstrated by Grover uses his own body and a few props to demonstrate the
shapes of the letters. There is even an alphabet of trash done by Oscar the Grouch.
Another manifest function would be that this book is a tool to teach children how
to read. This book teaches children that there is more than one way to look at the
alphabet, and that it can be fun to learn. The latent functions are those
unrecognized consequences. When adults read this book to their children, the
children will have to listen to comprehend what they are being read. The children
will also be taught how to sit still to be able to see the book. Another latent function
is that they will be taught other activities throughout this book like colors, shapes,
and spelling. In the second book, Disney Frozen: Forever Sisters, a manifest
function would be about how this book is a fairytale because Elsa has the powers
of snow and ice. Love and hate relationships between siblings is shown throughout
this book because Anna and Elsa fought and Elsa coronation, which caused Elsa to
set off her powers, and caused her to run away, but she was hunted. She was almost

It is estimated that over 246 million kids between the ages of 5 and 15 around the
world are labouring every day for long hours. Most of these children work on farms
that produce consumer products such as cocoa, coffee, cotton, rubber and other crops.
At 6 a.m., 10 year old Emmanuel wakes and readies himself for a day of labor in
the cocoa fields. Along the way, he watches as other kids walk in the opposite
direction toward school. He reaches the fields at sunrise and uses his machete to
slice ripe cocoa pods from the tree. Later, he carries the cocoa pods he s harvested
from the field, hacks them open and gathers the beans, which will later be used to

Children that work in these situations are deprived of their safety, education, and
chance to experience childhood to its fullest potential. By avoiding buying products
from companies that use child labor, we can minimize the amount of children
injured, hindered by, and killed in the workforce every year.

compounds and agricultural work, putting their lives at risk.

Immigration began late for the Italian population. With the main period of
immigration coming in the late 19th century, Italians were already several steps
behind the Irish, German, and French immigrants (Nelli 38). This proved to be
detrimental to the Italians as the previous immigrants had already stitched themselves
to the flag producing a resolute hatred for incoming immigrants, one of which was
Salvatore Rossi. Having fled Italyin 1897 due to economic hardship, he pursued the
American Dream in New York, by obtaining an education and landing an uncommon

These policies affected Salvatore and the Rossi family dearly. Salvatore, only
sixteen years of age, and his father, Franco, did much of the grunt work on the
family farm with Maria, Salvatore s mother, caring for his little brother, Angelo.
With the new taxes implemented, the Rossi family farm was required to give up
35% of their meager gains from the farm. This implementation harmed the family
much more than anticipated. These taxes and discriminatory policies toward
southern Italians entirety made the decision to immigrate to the United States much
more appealing. Salvatore and his Father were the first to voyage across the
Atlantic, leaving Maria and Angelo home until Salvatore and Franco had amassed
enough funds to bring them over as well. This course of action was common for
Italian immigrants at the time as they often arrived in America with less than $25 in
their pockets. The travel over the Atlantic was anything but inviting. Salvatore and
Franco were just two of over 200,000 that had emigrated to the U.S. from Italy in
1897 (Thernstrom 157). Franco, similar to many other Italian immigrants had no
knowledge of the English language; Salvatore learned what little he knew from a
seasoned missionary that had accompanied him on the ship. The voyage lasted a
week due to the advancements in steam powered vessels
