What should I write my blog about? A guide to how we start finding blog topics for a content plan.

  • 2. Where we look for inspiration when we're working on a new client's content plan.
  • 3. ...Assuming we already have target keywords, company background, and just need ideas for blog posts.
  • 4. WE START BY ASKING OURSELVES SOME QUESTIONS Sometimes the answers will inspire the blog topics; at other times they'll lead us on a Google deep-dive and we'll spot something else to talk about.
  • 5. ABOUT THE PRODUCT/SERVICE How does it work? How is it made? How is it useful to the target audience? How should you look after it? What problem does it solve? Where can it be used? Where does it come from?
  • 6. ABOUT THE COMPANY What's its story? Who's behind it? What's it trying to achieve? Has it received any recognition? Where did it get its name? What makes it special? Where did the passion come from? Has anything not worked out?
  • 7. ABOUT THE CUSTOMERS Who is this for? How do they use it? Are there any testimonials? What do they use this alongside? Can we find case studies? What questions do they ask? Where are they talking about it?
  • 8. ABOUT THE INDUSTRY What's happened in the past? Where did it begin? Is there a lot of news? Is it seasonal? What are competitors saying? Are there big events? Any popular social accounts to follow? Can we spot any trends? Where's it heading? Are there any complementary industries?
  • 9. ABOUT THE COMPETITION Do they have much online presence? How regularly do they post? Which keywords are they targeting? Which keywords have they overlooked? Are they answering any questions well? Have they missed any questions? How are they different? Can we start a conversation?
  • 10. ABOUT THE TEAM MEMBERS What are their roles? Can we spotlight their skills? What's the work culture like? Who has good ideas? What tools/software are they using? Have they missed any questions? Who's on the team? Where did they gain their experience?
  • 11. ABOUT IMAGERY Does the company have any infographics? Have any professional photos been taken? Do customers upload images? Has anyone made any videos? What are the premises like? Can we 'lift the curtain' on internal processes?
  • 12. Is a problem being solved? Is there anything we could teach? Are any charities being supported? Are there any competitions running? Can we give away any tools or templates? Is anyone doing something worth a shout-out? What advice can we offer the community? What useful resources could we collate?
  • 13. There's lots of "Blog Topic Generators" you can use to kickstart your ideas. Sometimes you can strike gold. Happy head-scratching! And if you want to leave your inspiration to an algorithm...
