Herman Melville Research Paper

American Literature
Herman Melville Progress is key to living life, but if one is advancing through life with the motivation
of revenge, then, in actuality, he or she is truly regressing. Revenge is an extremely corruptive trait. It
causes people to do uncharacteristic things that normally would not be done. The perception of right
and wrong is blurred and one takes inadvertent actions that may cost friendships, possessions, and
even lives. Revenge is often a major motivating factor in the characters that are in the works written
during the Dark Romanticism period. One of the most celebrated and influential American authors in
history, Herman Melville, was born on August 1, 1819; his reputation was not quite ... Show more

On September 28, 1891 just after midnight, Melville suffered a heart attack and died, leaving Billy
Budd in manuscript (Rollyson xxiv). Billy Budd was published posthumously. Moby Dick is
considered to be one of, if not the, best novels in American history. Harper amp; Brothers first
published it in 1851 in New York. In England, it was published in the same year under the title, The
Whale ( Moby Dick ). Melville explores topics and themes that were scarcely spoken of and never
even seen in a novel. In the novel, the Pequod, which is the ship, is named after a Native American
tribe that was exterminated when the white settlers arrived. It is a symbol of death and doom and
foreshadows event that occur later in the novel. Melville brings some very controversial themes to
light in the novel. Revenge is one of the main themes of Dark Romanticism and Melville uses it to
drive every action taken by Ahab. This is seen early on in the novel as Ahab explains to the crew why
he has a peg leg and that he wants to enact his revenge on Moby Dick (Melville 160 161). Moby Dick
is, fundamentally, a revenge tragedy. It s about one man s maniacal obsession with vengeance. It s
about finding an object on which to pin all you anger and fear and rage, not only about your own
suffering, but also about the suffering of all mankind ( Moby

Music s Influence On The Anti Apartheid Movement
Music s Influence on the Anti Apartheid Movement
In 1948, the white government of South Africa began creating one of the most brutal systems of racial
segregation the world has ever known. Under the minority rule of Afrikaners a Southern African
ethnic group descending from Dutch settlers in the 17th century a unique system of racial separation
and white supremacy called apartheid was created and legislated against the majority black
inhabitants. Apartheid is an Afrikaans word which translates to the state of being apart. Lasting from
1948 until the early 1990s, an exploitative and unjust political system was imposed on the black native
people of Africa. Dutch and British colonists dispossessed them of their homes, families, and ... Show

According to the Anti Apartheid Movement Archives, The system was kept in place by a battery of
repressive laws, under which people could be detained indefinitely without trial. Despite this injustice,
the people of South Africa continually fought back against their oppressors. Many forms of resistance
were utilized mass protests, armed resistance, strikes and boycotts in order to dethrone the National
Party. The resistance began as community wide gatherings to protest the National Party, however as
the tactics of the tyrannical white government developed through violent means, the Africans peaceful
protests escalated to bloody rioting. The apartheid government is responsible for over 7,000 black
deaths during the 46 years it was in power. What many people do not know, however, is that
throughout all of apartheid, a single factor continually gave Africans the strength and courage to keep
fighting for freedom: music. Music has historically been a large part of black culture, and from
freedom songs to funeral processions, the people of Africa used music to come together and unite
against the despotic government. This music could be found in different cultural avenues such as
chants at protests, funeral processions, freedom songs, and airtime on local radio stations. After
decades of pain and

essay will discuss about usage of CAPM in securities industry, through probe the advantages and
limitation of CAPM to this industry.
2. Concept of Capital asset pricing model
During 1952, Markowitz came out with a theory based on diversified investment is able to construct

Progressive Independent Party Analysis
With Hillary Clinton s recent self proclamation of securing the Democratic nomination, along with the
heated 2016 presidential election, has come an Independent, Progressive political movement, with
citizens calling for action against a system widely believed to have failed them.
It s time to finally have a vibrant, exciting, VIABLE third party in this country, a place where many of
us who feel disenfranchised; Progressives, Greens, Democratic Socialists, Independents, and
frustrated Democrats and Republicans alike, can feel empowered in the promise of democracy in our
country, says Araquel Bloss, founder of the Progressive Independent Party.
The Party began simply as an online petition written by Ms. Bloss, which quickly went viral after co
founder Steve Poikonen wrote an article and published it on The Morning Nightcap. Mr. Poikonen
states, Her vision was simple, eloquent, and absolutely right the hell on time: Let s build a coalition of
Democrats and Progressives who feel their party has left them in the wilderness. Let s bring in the
Green Party folks who have worked so hard for so long only to find themselves locked out of the

Who Is Andrew Jackson Democratic Dbq
Andrew Jackson was the president from 1829 to 1838. He was commonly known as the President of
the People. Some Americans criticize that Jackson was an undemocratic leader, however Jackson
should be seen as someone who stood for the principles of democracy. To be democratic means to
revolve decisions and actions around the people, citizens and noncitizens. Jackson was a hero of
democracy in early American because he increased the power of the people, put the people first, and
supported minorities.
Andrew Jackson was democratic because he increased the power of the people. In a map and graph
displaying voting rights and turnouts in 1800 and 1830, the visuals show that voting increased for the
white man. Also that after Jackson loss the election, the south had the ability to vote for Jackson. (Doc
A). Because of Jackson s loss, voting rights changed. Most states only had taxpayer as a requirement
to vote. This change allowed more people to vote, which gave them people power to vote for who they
want. According to the American Pageant, the author argues that the nation was becoming full of ...

In Jackson s call to coloured inhabitants, he gets rid of a policy that deprived free coloured inhabitants
of Louisiana of participation in the glorious struggle for national rights . (Doc N). Not only did
Jackson allow coloured men to fight, he gave them the same benefits as the common man. This
evidence demonstrates that Jackson represented all people. During Jackson s presidency, citizens
wanted the land of minorities. Americans who see Jackson as undemocratic sometimes point to a
message we wrote to Congress regarding the removal of Indians. (Doc J). They say that he removed
indians for the benefit of citizens. However, they are missing that Jackson provided a designated area
for Indians. This evidence shows that Jacskson is willing to please the common man, as well as

Effects Of Smoking On Public Places
She walked by me and a trail of smoke followed her like a burning building. While many in society
were irritated about the NO SMOKING policies in public places, it was and is morally justified.
Smoking is not only a health hazard to the individual puffing on the cigarette, but also every person
around that area health is at risk. Society has been thoroughly informed of the hazards from smoking
cigarettes; yet people still choose smoking as a form of stress relief or enjoyment. The exposer to the
harmful toxins not only affects the smoker and non smoker at the time of inhaling the smoke, but the
potential affects could possibly show up years later. Lung scaring and various forms of cancer are only

Direct experience of second and third hand smoke as a child helped me choose to not smoke as an
adult, but more importantly as a parent.
Some individuals smoke inside their own home, which is completely their choice. Entering into a
public place while smoking affects complete strangers by forcing them to breathe in the toxins from
the cigarette. The smoker has a filter at the end of the cigarette; the innocent bystander has nothing but
toxic smoke to inhale. According to Opposing View Points, To protect nonsmokers from exposure to
secondhand smoke, the United States passed laws limiting smoking in public places. During the
1970s, states and cities began requiring nonsmoking areas in public areas and workplaces. Over the
next thirty years, many workplaces and public areas became smoke free environments, where smoking
was completely forbidden. Regulations on smoking in public vary across states and cities; however,
federal law bans smoking in all federal facilities and control smoking on airplanes, which was banned
in 1990 for all domestic flights less than six hours long. Today, most flights between the United States
and other countries are also smoke free (Smoking). Before smoking was prohibited in restaurants and
other public areas, my family dined at a local Waffle House. My toddler son sat in a highchair in the
aisle when a woman walked past our table smoking a cigarette. I remember thinking to myself, That

The Graveyard Book, The Wolves In The Walls, And The Sandman
A picture is worth a thousand words, and each piece of artwork has its own unique story to tell. The
smallest change in style can lead to the picture setting a completely different tone, which is true
whether the painting hangs in a museum or illustrates a children s book. Illustrations in books draw
the attention of younger readers. However, illustrations are not limited to the bright and lighthearted
picture books such as the Dr. Seuss creations. Pictures in young adult novels enhance the meaning
behind words, allowing the reader to have a better understanding of the story. In the works The
Graveyard Book, The Wolves in the Walls, and The Sandman: Dream Country, Neil Gaiman utilizes
different styles of illustrations to further express story, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The illustrations show these tones in each story. The Graveyard Book begins with an ominous tone
through the first image of Jack s knife, which gleams white on a completely black background
(Graveyard 2). This image is shockingly dark and ominous, setting the tone for the chapter as the man
named Jack kills Nobody Owens family. The tone for The Wolves in the Walls is set through the
position and size of the words. For example, when Lucy first describes the noises as sneaking creeping
crumpling noises, the words are getting larger to put more emphasize on the sounds she was hearing
(Wolves). The tone is also shown through the way the that wolves are drawn with sharp black lines,
making the images jarring in comparison to the soft warm colors of Lucy and her family. The contrast
of the wolves and Lucy s family show the tension from the fear that Lucy and her family have of the
wolves (Wolves). There is also contrast of images that shift the tone in The Sandman, Dream Country,
which can be seen in Calliope. When Oneiros confronts Richard, Richard Madoc visibly cracks as the
Oneiros plagues him with ideas, marking the change in tone. This image of the panel cracking gives
the reader a deeper understanding of the tone than words

The Monkey s Paw Suspense Essay
Title In many stories there is a sense of tension and excitement. This is suspense which makes the
reader curious of the outcome of the story or future events. Suspense can be found when the author
uses repeating phrases, uses vivid words to describe dramatic actions, or explains a character s anxiety
and fear. Suspense is created by authors with a technique called, characterizing anxiety and fear. When
authors use this technique they describe what a character is doing to portray fear. This advances in the
reader s curiosity. For instance, in the The Monkey s Paw by W.W. Jacobs, The White family is given
a magical monkey s paw that grants three wishes to Mr. White. His first wish results in their son s
death. Mrs. White forced Mr. White to bring their son back to life with the magical monkey s paw; Mr.

For example, in the short story The Tell Tale Heart the narrator tries to prove he is not crazy by telling
a story. He is troubled by the eye of an old man he loves. He just couldn t stand the eye so he decided
to carefully murder the man. When the police came to the house the narrator played it cool and the
officers believed him. But, when he sat down he started to hear a heartbeat that got louder! Louder!
Louder! (Poe 94) A key reason for this quote was to show that the heartbeat was starting to get too
loud to bear. This quote makes the reader curious of what the narrator will do when he can t bear the
sound any longer. Certainly, that allows suspense to be created.
Ultimately, suspense techniques can be found in many works. Repeating phrases, vivid and dramatic
descriptions, and characterizing anxiety and fear are three of the many techniques and author uses to
create suspense. Suspense can take something otherwise very bland and make it interesting and

Anne Elliot Persuasion Essay
Our heroine of Jane Austen s Persuasion, Anne Elliot, is one of the greatest, and most appealing,
woman presented in all of Jane Austen s novels. We are introduced to the novel where Anne Elliot,
eight years after breaking her engagement to Captain Wentworth, has a developed unique character as
Austen s female heroine: she is the daughter of a bankrupt baronet, a 27 year old spinster, an introvert,
and an easy victim to persuasion. Such qualities would not make Anne a marriageable young lady, but
they do not define Anne s whole well being. Without even realizing it, Anne Elliot turns herself into

The African Textile Industry
The African textile industry dates back to as far as 5,000 B.C when the Egyptians engaged in cloth
making; their clothing were simple, and did not differ a lot between social classes. A fast forward to
the times when the African empires of Ghana and Mali reigned shows particular colors and cloths
being solely used for royalty and nobles. A further look into present day Africa and we see a society
where the textile industry has blossomed, and specific designs and techniques of textile making have
become unique to particular regions and tribes. For instance, the Kente is distinct to the Ewe and
Ashanti peoples of Ghana, the Yoruba of Nigeria are known for their ornate designs, and the mud
cloth is exclusive to Mali. The continent of Africa boasts an array of flamboyant as well as simple
designs that are either hand woven, or machine spun. African textiles are highly differentiated, and the
weavers are skilled intellects with great mathematical and creative skill despite the, Eurocentric
conception of Africa as a dark continent and its people as uncivilized. (Africa, 7) In the African culture
today, clothing is not simply used as protection, or to showcase individual style; instead, clothing
serves as a communicative mechanism, telling stories of wealth and social class, stories of belonging
to a particular tribe, religion, or region, tales of ancestral ties, and even vital past events. In past times,
it was only a wealthy man that could wear cloth that was colored because

Evaluation Plan For Rapid Application Development
1.0 Development Approaches 1.1 Rapid Application Development Rapid application development is
an approach that is designed to develop software and systems in which changes are expected to be
made throughout the lifecycle of the approach. The RAD approach uses less time on planning and
emphasizes more resources on an interactive process in rapid prototyping. The RAD methodology
consists of four phases analysis, design, construction and implementation. The four phases are
processed through a chain of short bursts of interactive development cycles according to James Martin
RAD Methodology (Martin, 1991). Requirements planning phase Integrates all the aspects of system
analysis and system planning. Stakeholders within the project team establishes a mutual agreement on
the business objectives, project scope and requirements. Design phase In the design phase, the users
works closely with the system analyst to develop models and prototypes that define the systems
processes and functions. The development of the user design is an ongoing process that enables the
users to make changes to the model until the final product is functional and meets the requirements of
the project. Construction phase During the construction phase, it emphases more on the software
development, users contribute ideas to make improvements in the code of the program and further
changes may be implemented into the system. Implementation phase In final stage of the lifecycle,
data is converted and system

Analysis Of The Crystal Gems Essay
Steven Universe is a TV show on Cartoon Network that centers around a fourteen year old human
gem alien hybrid named Steven and his three gem alien guardians who seek to protect the earth from
their home planet. His mother, Rose Quartz, led a rebellion group called The Crystal Gems against her
home planet to thwart their plans to colonize the Earth. Years later, she died giving birth to Steven. For
a children s show, it has covered many topics, including defying the gender norm, mental illness, and
abusive relationships. The relationship of two characters, Jasper and Lapis Lazuli, is a sensitive topic
of discussion among fans and critics alike. There are three points of view on the subject. They include
that Jasper is the abuser, Lapis is the abuser, and the relationship was mutually abusive. When
considering the characteristics that make a relationship abusive, and how the relationship is being
portrayed in the show, all the evidence points to Lapis Lazuli as the abuser. On the show, the alien
gems practice fusion, which is a process of combining the forms of two (or more) gems to form a
single entity. Fusions are usually used for combative purposes, but can symbolize many types of
relationships ranging to healthy and unhealthy. While Jasper and Lapis Lazuli s relationship was
neither romantic or platonic, their fusion is heavily implied to represent an abusive relationship. Jasper
is a muscular gem soldier who was born on Earth but fought on her home world s side of

Compare and contrast Porphyrias lover and My last Duchess
Porphyrias lover and My Last Duchess are similar in many ways, they are both written by Robert
Browning. In My Last Duchess the speaker is an Italian Duke who is speaking to the ambassador of a
count, whose daughter he hopes, to marry. The Duke is trying to impress the counts representative by
showing him around his gallery and the painting of his last Duchess. He openly speaks about having
his last Duchess murdered, because she did not show him enough respect. Porphyria s lover is a
dramatic monologue that describes the events that lead up to Porphyria s death. A dramatic monologue

Porphyria is in control of the relationship made my cheek lie there she is the person who is doing all
the actions. Porphyria s lover wants her to be his forever, the only way this is possible is to kill her.
This occurs to him after he realises Porphyria worshipped me. He wants to preserve the moment, he
thinks she wanted them to be together.
The upper class in both poems are in control for most of it. Porphyria and the Duke are both in
relationships with a class lower than themselves. Both of them loose control, this results in Porphyria
dying and the Duchess dying. The Duke remains in control and so does
Porphyria s lover. This could symbolise a man s power, both men come out on top. However there are
differences in this.
The first and most obvious difference is the way the two women are killed. Both women are killed by
a lower class then themselves. My
Last Duchess an assassin is hired by the Duke. Porphyria s lover killed Porphyria. Porphyria s lover
killed her out of passion because of his love for her. The Duke had the Duchess killed because he
could not lose control, and lose his male dominancy herself be lessoned so, nor plainly set her wits to
yours. He can not risk talking to her incase she rebels against him. He is extremely cold hearted and
instead of talking he just hires someone to kill her.
Jealously is also a very important factor in both poems. Porphyria s lover is jealous

Aerial Warfare Throughout The First And Second World Wars
The History of Aerial Warfare Throughout the First and Second World Wars When Aerial Warfare was
first introduced many thought it was useless, inferior, and just plain stupid. From biplanes to dropping
nuclear bombs, Aerial Warfare has come a long way. I am going to explain the advancements and
rapid adaptations Aerial Warfare made throughout the First and Second World Wars. In the beginning
of aerial warfare, it wasn t really warfare. It was more of Reconnaissance. Sources suggest the first use
of this Recon , was the Chinese, by using kites to fly people in the air to scout out the enemy. World
War 1 was the first legitimate war with air combat, and real advancements in the field. The Germans
heavily invested in aircraft technology, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Close Air Support was developed and fighters were formed to help with this such as the Stuka Dive
Bomber, and the British Tempest. Aircraft also began hunting tanks with large caliber machine guns
and unguided rockets as ammunition. Aircraft carriers were used on a large scale, and their true power
was shown at the Battle of Midway in the Pacific. This battle also showed how aircraft could use
torpedos and take down massive warships successfully. Using aircraft to transport supplies and troops
were now adopted, and paratroopers were starting to be used. Perhaps the most famous paratrooper
mission which was Operation Market Garden, was a nearly disastrous operation by the Allies in 1944.
Huge transport planes such as the JU 52, and the DC 3 could carry massive loads at decent speed,
which was effective for resupplying. Helicopters were soon developed, but were not really effective
during the war. Aircraft played a vital role in World War 2, and so many advancements and technology
changed because of it. In World War 1 air power was an addition to the war, but it didn t change the
outcome of many important campaigns of the war like World War 2 did. In conlusion, over both of the
World Wars aircraft warfare started from nothing and ended with nuclear bomb droppers and jet

Research Paper On Hypnosis
A common question is, what is hypnosis and how does it work? According to the American
Psychology Association hypnosis is a therapeutic technique in which clinicians make suggestions to
individuals who have undergone a procedure designed to relax them and focus their minds (American
Psychology Association, 2016). Hypnosis is called hypnotherapy and hypnotic suggestion. James
Braid, a 19th century Scottish surgeon originated those terms based on the word hypnos, which is
Greek for to sleep (Harris, 2016).
When the person is hypnotized they feel calm and relaxed. The therapist using verbal repetition makes
them more open to suggestions. The individual being hypnotized is conscious but is able to ignore the
most of everything going on around them. When being hypnotized the person excludes all other
thoughts.
Hypnosis did not come into the picture until the late 1700s. The father of modern hypnotism is Franz
Mesmer, an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is used for mental health. Such as phobias, anxiety, smoking, weight control, pain, memory and
many other things. Hypnosis is also used in the medical field too. Its uses include anesthesia,
gynecology, pain, dermatology, control bleeding and other things as well. Hypnotherapy is used in
dentistry. Some of the uses include control of fear, saliva control, tongue biting and hygiene.
(American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, 2016) There are many popular misconceptions about
hypnosis. The most common one is that the person loses their will and that they are completely under
the command of the therapist. This idea was formed because many stage hypnotist use it. However, it
is far from the truth. During the hypnosis you are in control of yourself. There are two theories on why
hypnosis works. One of those is dissociation, and the other is a kind of role playing (Bjork, 2009
2015). Doctor Earnest Hilgard had the belief that it only worked on immediate conscious mind of the

Women During The 19th Century
Men and women play different roles in society. In the beginning of the 19th century, the gap between
males and females was much larger than it is now. Back then men and women were usually assumed
to have certain occupations. For example, in the 1950s women were supposed to become housewives
and stay at home all day cleaning, cooking, or taking care of their children (Parry 1584). Men on the
other hand, were suspected to go out and work all day doing whatever occupation they held. Due to
the media uprising in the 19th century, women began to feel restrained on what they can accomplish.
They began to care about their appearance more than anything else. This is one of the factors that
created the gender gap, but society has always had the gap that has separated the two. This picture was
taken in California in 1921, and it depicts Dr. Louis Estes helping his daughter put on her boxing
gloves while she gets ready to square up against her little brother. The title of the picture describes the
daughter as husky which does not make sense. The word husky, usually applied to overweight
individuals, does not accurately describe the girl in the photo. It is possible that the author may be
referring to her as more masculine than feminine in the picture. This influential image shows the
daughter as taller than both males in the photo which asserts dominance. Also, both Dr. Estes and his
son s eyes, both lead to the daughter s, which makes her the focal point of the image. Dr. Estes

What Is The Theme Of Justice In Dante s Inferno

The Inferno of Dante
In the Fourth Circle of Hell, Dante encounters those who have been condemned to the inferno for
reasons of greed. In this Fourth Circle, once again Dante s use of contrapasso is apparent with the
punishment assigned to the greedy. These people have lived a life on Earth that was constantly
distinguished by their avarice. Thus, such individuals hoard their wealth in an effort to merely
accumulate material goods. They are not concerned with any type of use of these goods, but instead
simply attempt to multiply them, in line with the logic of greed. For the avarice person, it is the
constant acquisition and storage of material goods, such as money, which dominates ... Show more

For instance, the flatterers are forced to eat excrement in hell because their words are meaningless. In
Canto III, the first seven lines read, through me you enter into the city of woes...justice moved my
high maker, in power divine, wisdom supreme which suggests that God created Hell for justice. Many
of the sins mirror the actions on Earth to create a balance. The sinner receive punishment that befits
their sin. Dante, speaking from a Christian perspective, upholds that a concept of justice is central to
the faith. When the human being sins he commits a transgression, which must be paid for in the
afterlife: if there was no punishment, there would be no justice, since every human being, regardless
of how they lived their life, would be treated the same. These punishments reflect justice in this sense,
and also in the specific sense of how each punishment suits a specific sin. Without punishment,
without a sense of justice, it would show a God who essentially does not care how people have lived
their lives. And in this sense, it is also love: precisely because through justice God does show that he
cares about how human beings have conducted themselves and does pay attention to the actions of
human beings and recognizes ethical

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra s performance of Mahler s Symphony No. 5 at the Berlin
Philharmonie, gifted the audience with a masterful rendition of the movements within the symphony.
The Symphony divides into three separate parts, in which the movements complement each other s
characteristics. The symphony orchestra features a myriad of orchestral instruments featuring the
Brass, Woodwinds, Strings, and Percussion families. Furthermore, the various movements throughout
the performance utilize various musical concepts that bring the music to life. Albeit, the complexity of
Mahler s symphony, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra performed superbly throughout the

Code Geass Rebellion Research Paper
Rebellion is the open opposition to authority, which could be either the government or ruler.
Throughout history there have been many different cases where a group of people are compelled to
defy the authority that rules them. The term rebellion holds a negative connotation that is often
equated to failed revolutions. Many political theorists have researched the motivation that leads
individuals to come together and rebel, and the methods they use to attempt to reach their goals.
Should one only rebel when the systematic repression of a people escalates to a certain level? In this

The Impact Of Modern Property Development On People
The Impact Of Modern Property Development On People Chapter 1 Introduction Modernity is what
gives the present the specific quality that makes it different from the past and points the way toward
the future. Modernity is also described as being a break with tradition (Hilde Heynen, 1999). When it
comes to building modern city, tall buildings, high towers, skyscrapers and big construction play a
major part. The arise of these kind of modern development resident depends partly on the world
population and land shortage. According to Gregory Hodkinson, almost half the percentage of the
world population is living in the cities and by the year 2050, the figure continue to increase to 70%.
Figure 1 World Urbanization Prospects: The 2014 Revision, shows that the population of the world
living in the urban area tend to increase gradually whereas the population in rural area stop rising
since the year 2000. Due to the increasing of population and land shortage in urban area, tall building
becomes one of the major phenomenon that the world, especially some major cities are facing (H.
Hayati, M.H. Sayadi, 2012). Big construction has negative impact on the environment such as
pollution, reduce the people in the area to get fresh air and sunlight but the massive emergence of high
buildings is much of a trend during these days due to the need of space and industrial demand. With

Political Polarization And Culture War Essay
Political scientists Wilson and Fiorina both tackle the concepts of party polarization and culture war
through the lens of the 2004 U.S presidential election. In 2016, their musings are, for the most part,
still highly applicable. Neither denies the existence of either a culture war or political polarization.
Rather, their theses differ in the extent to which they apply these terms to the general electorate rather
than to the political elites. Wilson argues that both elites and voters are polarized, a phenomenon
driven by the media, homogenization of political parties, and interest groups.1 However, Fiorina
maintains that the polarization in the voting patterns of the electorate is merely a reflection of elite
partisan stances rather than the polarization of the voters themselves.2 In examining their arguments, it
is evident that Fiorina had the more tenable thesis in regard to the polarization of the electorate in
2004. Yet this does not preclude the existence of a culture war that has led polarization in 2016. Today,
Wilson s theories are more applicable to the political and cultural context. Looking towards the 2018
midterm elections, the Democratic party in particular should focus on cultivating moderate stances
that can appeal to both Democrats and Republicans with the aim of gaining seats in the Senate and
House of Representatives. Writing in the political landscape prior to the 2004 presidential election,
Fiorina frequently invokes the 2000 presidential election as

  • 2. Herman Melville Research Paper Raju Singh Mrs. McDaniel American Literature Herman Melville Progress is key to living life, but if one is advancing through life with the motivation of revenge, then, in actuality, he or she is truly regressing. Revenge is an extremely corruptive trait. It causes people to do uncharacteristic things that normally would not be done. The perception of right and wrong is blurred and one takes inadvertent actions that may cost friendships, possessions, and even lives. Revenge is often a major motivating factor in the characters that are in the works written during the Dark Romanticism period. On September 28, 1891 just after midnight, Melville suffered a heart attack and died, leaving Billy Budd in manuscript (Rollyson xxiv). Billy Budd was published posthumously. Moby Dick is considered to be one of, if not the, best novels in American history. Harper amp; Brothers first published it in 1851 in New York. In England, it was published in the same year under the title, The Whale ( Moby Dick ). Melville explores topics and themes that were scarcely spoken of and never even seen in a novel. In the novel, the Pequod, which is the ship, is named after a Native American tribe that was exterminated when the white settlers arrived. It is a symbol of death and doom and foreshadows event that occur later in the novel. Melville brings some very controversial themes to light in the novel. Revenge is one of the main themes of Dark Romanticism and Melville uses it to drive every action taken by Ahab. This is seen early on in the novel as Ahab explains to the crew why he has a peg leg and that he wants to enact his revenge on Moby Dick (Melville 160 161). Moby Dick is, fundamentally, a revenge tragedy. It s about one man s maniacal obsession with vengeance. It s about finding an object on which to pin all you anger and fear and rage, not only about your own suffering, but also about the suffering of all mankind ( Moby ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to the Anti Apartheid Movement Archives, The system was kept in place by a battery of repressive laws, under which people could be detained indefinitely without trial. Despite this injustice, the people of South Africa continually fought back against their oppressors. The resistance began as community wide gatherings to protest the National Party, however as the tactics of the tyrannical white government developed through violent means, the Africans peaceful protests escalated to bloody rioting. The apartheid government is responsible for over 7,000 black deaths during the 46 years it was in power. What many people do not know, however, is that throughout all of apartheid, a single factor continually gave Africans the strength and courage to keep fighting for freedom: music. Music has historically been a large part of black culture, and from freedom songs to funeral processions, the people of Africa used music to come together and unite against the despotic government. This music could be found in different cultural avenues such as chants at protests, funeral processions, freedom songs, and airtime on local radio stations. After decades of pain and ... Some Americans criticize that Jackson was an undemocratic leader, however Jackson should be seen as someone who stood for the principles of democracy. To be democratic means to revolve decisions and actions around the people, citizens and noncitizens. Jackson was a hero of democracy in early American because he increased the power of the people, put the people first, and supported minorities. During Jackson s presidency, citizens wanted the land of minorities. Americans who see Jackson as undemocratic sometimes point to a message we wrote to Congress regarding the removal of Indians. Direct experience of second and third hand smoke as a child helped me choose to not smoke as an adult, but more importantly as a parent. Some individuals smoke inside their own home, which is completely their choice. Entering into a public place while smoking affects complete strangers by forcing them to breathe in the toxins from the cigarette. The smoker has a filter at the end of the cigarette; the innocent bystander has nothing but toxic smoke to inhale. According to Opposing View Points, To protect nonsmokers from exposure to secondhand smoke, the United States passed laws limiting smoking in public places. During the 1970s, states and cities began requiring nonsmoking areas in public areas and workplaces. Over the next thirty years, many workplaces and public areas became smoke free environments, where smoking was completely forbidden. The smallest change in style can lead to the picture setting a completely different tone, which is true whether the painting hangs in a museum or illustrates a children s book. The Graveyard Book begins with an ominous tone through the first image of Jack s knife, which gleams white on a completely black background (Graveyard 2). This image is shockingly dark and ominous, setting the tone for the chapter as the man named Jack kills Nobody Owens family. The tone for The Wolves in the Walls is set through the position and size of the words. For example, when Lucy first describes the noises as sneaking creeping crumpling noises, the words are getting larger to put more emphasize on the sounds she was hearing (Wolves). The tone is also shown through the way the that wolves are drawn with sharp black lines, making the images jarring in comparison to the soft warm colors of Lucy and her family. The contrast of the wolves and Lucy s family show the tension from the fear that Lucy and her family have of the wolves (Wolves). There is also contrast of images that shift the tone in The Sandman, Dream Country, which can be seen in Calliope. • 14. The Monkey s Paw Suspense Essay Title In many stories there is a sense of tension and excitement. This is suspense which makes the reader curious of the outcome of the story or future events. Suspense can be found when the author uses repeating phrases, uses vivid words to describe dramatic actions, or explains a character s anxiety and fear. Suspense is created by authors with a technique called, characterizing anxiety and fear. When authors use this technique they describe what a character is doing to portray fear. This advances in the reader s curiosity. For instance, in the The Monkey s Paw by W.W. Jacobs, The White family is given a magical monkey s paw that grants three wishes to Mr. White. For a children s show, it has covered many topics, including defying the gender norm, mental illness, and abusive relationships. The relationship of two characters, Jasper and Lapis Lazuli, is a sensitive topic of discussion among fans and critics alike. There are three points of view on the subject. They include that Jasper is the abuser, Lapis is the abuser, and the relationship was mutually abusive. When considering the characteristics that make a relationship abusive, and how the relationship is being portrayed in the show, all the evidence points to Lapis Lazuli as the abuser. On the show, the alien gems practice fusion, which is a process of combining the forms of two (or more) gems to form a single entity. Fusions are usually used for combative purposes, but can symbolize many types of relationships ranging to healthy and unhealthy. Back then men and women were usually assumed to have certain occupations. For example, in the 1950s women were supposed to become housewives and stay at home all day cleaning, cooking, or taking care of their children (Parry 1584). Men on the other hand, were suspected to go out and work all day doing whatever occupation they held. Due to the media uprising in the 19th century, women began to feel restrained on what they can accomplish. They began to care about their appearance more than anything else. This is one of the factors that created the gender gap, but society has always had the gap that has separated the two. Many of the sins mirror the actions on Earth to create a balance. The sinner receive punishment that befits their sin. Dante, speaking from a Christian perspective, upholds that a concept of justice is central to the faith. When the human being sins he commits a transgression, which must be paid for in the afterlife: if there was no punishment, there would be no justice, since every human being, regardless of how they lived their life, would be treated the same. These punishments reflect justice in this sense, and also in the specific sense of how each punishment suits a specific sin. Without punishment, without a sense of justice, it would show a God who essentially does not care how people have lived their lives. Rather, their theses differ in the extent to which they apply these terms to the general electorate rather than to the political elites. Wilson argues that both elites and voters are polarized, a phenomenon driven by the media, homogenization of political parties, and interest groups.1 However, Fiorina maintains that the polarization in the voting patterns of the electorate is merely a reflection of elite partisan stances rather than the polarization of the voters themselves.2 In examining their arguments, it is evident that Fiorina had the more tenable thesis in regard to the polarization of the electorate in 2004. Yet this does not preclude the existence of a culture war that has led polarization in 2016. Today, Wilson s theories are more applicable to the political and cultural context. Writing in the political landscape prior to the 2004 presidential election, Fiorina frequently invokes the 2000 presidential election as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
