What is the Cloud?
What is the Cloud?
• The Cloud refers to software and
services that run on the internet instead
of your computer

all cloud services
How does it work?
• At the most basic level
1.) One or more data servers connected to the Internet.
2.) A Computer user subscribing to a cloud storage
service sends copies of files over the Internet to the
data server
3.) When the user wishes to retrieve the information,
he or she accesses the data server usually through a
Web-based interface.
4.) The server then either sends the files back to the
user or allows the user to access and edit the files on
the server itself.
Where does it all live?
• Instead of housing information on your
hard drive or your phone’s memory, your
information is stored in massive data
centers around the world.
Advantages of the Cloud
Scalability
• Scaled to meet your changing IT system demands.
Accessibility
• Clouds offer services that are available wherever the end user
might be located.
Mobility
• Internet enabled electronic devices such as smartphones &
tablets can connect to the cloud.
Disadvantages of the Cloud
• No Internet Connection No Cloud Connection
• Security and privacy in the Cloud
• How reliable is your vendors infrastructure
• Technical difficulties and downtime
• Data location
• Limited control and flexibility
• Dependency and vendor lock-in
Considerations
• Support
• Internet bandwidth dependent
• Backup and Recovery
• How easy can I get my data back?
Q & A

Editor's Notes

  • #4 Have you ever heard someone talking about "the cloud" and wondered what it meant? Although the idea is relatively new, it's not too hard to understand. In fact, you've probably used the cloud many times without knowing it. If you have an e-mail account with a Web-based e-mail service like Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail or Gmail, then you've had some experience with cloud computing. Instead of running an e-mail program on your computer, you log in to a Web e-mail account remotely. The software and storage for your account doesn't exist on your computer -- it's on the service's computer cloud.
  • #5 Cloud computing is internet-based computing in which large groups of remote servers are networked to allow the centralized data storage, and online access to computer services or resources Cloud computing refers to the use of computing resources, those being hardware and/or software) that reside on a remote machine and are delivered to the end user as a service over the internet
  • #6 Dropbox Google Drive Apple iCloud Amazon Web Services Office 365
  • #7 Data Server is ? Like logging into your bank? Logging into iCloud or even Amazon or ebay..changing your order status Checking emails
  • #8 Aerial-Photo-of-Microsoft-data-center-in-Quincy-WA
  • #10 What if your internet is down? Outages – no local data, no email No local resources to fall back on Privacy Concerns – Monthly Subscriptions Data traveling outside of the organization Privacy concerns
  • #11 Support Calling a Big Organization How committed is the vendor to your success? Internet Bandwidth Dependent – Could be slow a certain hours cost of upgrading Backup and Recovery – How long till you are functional if your provider has an outage What if you want to leave you provider – How can you move your data or how can you get it back?
