a brief presentation of both the males and females reproductive system, anatomy and its physiology, outlined in sequentially and in a way easier to understand.
An enlarged prostate is the slow growth of the prostate gland, which is involved in the production of seminal fluid and reproductive function in men. The prostate wraps around the tube that transports urine out of the bladder. It is very common for the prostate gland to become enlarged as a man ages. An enlarged prostate is also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is generally not caused by infection or cancer.
As a man matures, the prostate grows. At puberty, the prostate doubles in size. At about age 25, the prostate gland grows again, and this can lead to an enlarged prostate as a man enters his 40s (Source: NIDDK).
An enlarged prostate many not cause any symptoms or noticeable problems in some men. However, as men age, an enlarged prostate may grow to the point where it presses on the bladder and urethra, causing urine flow to be slower and less forceful. Symptoms of enlarged prostate are very common in men in the 60s and extremely common in men in their 70s and 80s.
If an enlarged prostate prevents complete emptying of your bladder, it may lead to a urinary tract infection or permanent damage to your bladder, including the inability to control urination (incontinence). The earlier the enlarged prostate is found, the more effective treatment will be, lowering the risk for complications.
Guide on improving prostate health for a better urinary stream.docxRichard Smith
Chapter 1: Introduction
The importance of prostate health cannot be overstated, as the prostate gland plays a crucial role in the male reproductive system and overall well-being. Here are some key points highlighting its significance:
Reproductive Function: The prostate is responsible for producing seminal fluid, which nourishes and transports sperm during ejaculation. A healthy prostate is essential for fertility and successful reproduction.
Urinary Function: The prostate surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body. When the prostate is healthy, it doesn't obstruct the urethra, allowing for normal urine flow. Prostate problems, such as enlargement (BPH), can obstruct the urethra, leading to urinary issues like weak flow, frequent urination, and difficulty emptying the bladder.
Quality of Life: Prostate issues, if left untreated, can significantly impact a man's quality of life. Symptoms like urinary urgency, nocturia (frequent nighttime urination), and discomfort can disrupt daily activities, sleep, and overall well-being.
Cancer Risk: Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. Regular screenings and early detection are vital for successful treatment. Maintaining prostate health can reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer or catching it in its early stages when it's more treatable.
Aging and Hormones: Prostate health is closely tied to hormonal changes, especially with age. An imbalance in hormones, particularly the male sex hormone testosterone, can affect prostate growth and function. Understanding these hormonal dynamics is essential for maintaining prostate health.
Preventative Measures: Proactive measures, including a healthy diet, regular exercise, and avoiding known risk factors (like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption), can promote prostate health. Awareness of family history and risk factors also helps in early intervention.
The prostate is an exocrine gland of the male mammalian reproductive system
It is a walnut-sized gland that forms part of the male reproductive system and is located in front of the rectum and just below the urinary bladder
Function is to store and secrete a clear, slightly alkaline fluid that constitutes 10-30% of the volume of the seminal fluid that along with the spermatozoa, constitutes semen
A healthy human prostate measures (4cm-vertical, by 3cm-horizontal, 2cm ant-post ).
It surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It has anterior, median, posterior and two lateral lobes
It’s work is regulated by androgens which are responsible for male sex characteristics
Generalised disease of the prostate due to hormonal derangement which leads to non malignant enlargement of the gland (increase in the number of epithelial cells and stromal tissue)to cause compression of the urethra leading to symptoms (LUTS
BPH, which causes lower urinary tract symptoms LUTS , is common diagnosis among the ageing male population with increasing prevalence. Many risks factors, both modifiable and non modifiable can increase the risk of development and progression of BPH and LUTS. The symptoms can be obstructive or Irritative or can affect the patient after micturition. BPH occurs when both stromal and epithelial cells of the prostate in the transitional zone proliferate by processes that are thought to be influenced by inflammation and sex hormones, causing prostate enlargement. Patients with LUTS undergo several key diagnostic investigation before being diagnosed with BPH. Treatment options for men with BPH start at watchful waiting and progress through medical to surgical intervention. Medical Technology Tackles New Health Care Demand - Research Report - March 2...pchutichetpong
M Capital Group (“MCG”) predicts that with, against, despite, and even without the global pandemic, the medical technology (MedTech) industry shows signs of continuous healthy growth, driven by smaller, faster, and cheaper devices, growing demand for home-based applications, technological innovation, strategic acquisitions, investments, and SPAC listings. MCG predicts that this should reflects itself in annual growth of over 6%, well beyond 2028.
According to Chris Mouchabhani, Managing Partner at M Capital Group, “Despite all economic scenarios that one may consider, beyond overall economic shocks, medical technology should remain one of the most promising and robust sectors over the short to medium term and well beyond 2028.”
There is a movement towards home-based care for the elderly, next generation scanning and MRI devices, wearable technology, artificial intelligence incorporation, and online connectivity. Experts also see a focus on predictive, preventive, personalized, participatory, and precision medicine, with rising levels of integration of home care and technological innovation.
The average cost of treatment has been rising across the board, creating additional financial burdens to governments, healthcare providers and insurance companies. According to MCG, cost-per-inpatient-stay in the United States alone rose on average annually by over 13% between 2014 to 2021, leading MedTech to focus research efforts on optimized medical equipment at lower price points, whilst emphasizing portability and ease of use. Namely, 46% of the 1,008 medical technology companies in the 2021 MedTech Innovator (“MTI”) database are focusing on prevention, wellness, detection, or diagnosis, signaling a clear push for preventive care to also tackle costs.
In addition, there has also been a lasting impact on consumer and medical demand for home care, supported by the pandemic. Lockdowns, closure of care facilities, and healthcare systems subjected to capacity pressure, accelerated demand away from traditional inpatient care. Now, outpatient care solutions are driving industry production, with nearly 70% of recent diagnostics start-up companies producing products in areas such as ambulatory clinics, at-home care, and self-administered diagnostics.

Hypertension is a chronic condition of concern due to its role in the causation of coronary heart diseases. Hypertension is a worldwide epidemic and important risk factor for coronary artery disease, stroke and renal diseases. Blood pressure is the force exerted by the blood against the walls of the blood vessels and is sufficient to maintain tissue perfusion during activity and rest. Hypertension is sustained elevation of BP. In adults, HTN exists when systolic blood pressure is equal to or greater than 140mmHg or diastolic BP is equal to or greater than 90mmHg. The
PrudentRx's Function in the Management of Chronic Illnesses
What is the prostate gland?
1.
2. Located between the bladder and rectum,
the prostate is a gland made up of two
lobes and surrounded by a layer of tissue.
Theprostate also surrounds the urethra,
the tube which carries both urine and
semen into the penis. The prostate is
quite small in young men, about the size
of a walnut, but grows throughout the
lifetime of its male host.
3. Prostate Functions
The prostate carries out several
important functions. First and foremost,
the prostate functions as a sex gland by
not only creating the fluid that helps
nourish sperm and protect them on their
journey through the vaginal tract, but in
its further capacity as a muscle, it helps
propel said sperm through the penis
upon ejaculation.
4.
5. That fluid is produced by thousands of
tiny glands within the prostate, which
mixes with sperm to create semen. That
process is carried out during ejaculation.
As the muscles contract, forcing this fluid
into the urethra, it mixes with sperm
being released from the testicles to form
semen.
6. This prostatic fluid’s alkalinity helps
protect the sperm upon entering the
acidic vaginal tract. Without this coating,
sperm have less mobility, shorter
lifespans, and are prone to losing their
DNA markers.
7.
8. When healthy, the prostate functions as a
line of defence against any bacteria
attempting to invade the bladder. As well,
it helps men control their rate of urine
flow by contracting around the urethra
and limiting the amount of urine that is
released at any given time.
9. Prostate Size
The size of the prostate tends to be
uniform among men, regardless of race,
typically being about the size of a
kiwifruit, and weighing around one ounce.
The size is not static throughout the life of
its host though, and typically goes
through two main stages of growth.
10.
11. The size of the prostate first begins to
increase when a boy first reaches
puberty, approximately doubling in size.
Again in the mid 20’s the size of the
prostate increases again, though this
time not as dramatically as during
puberty
12. After the second growth spurt, the prostate
often continues to grow slightly over time, and
this can result in a common condition called
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasy (BPH). BPH is
present in a high percentage of males over 40,
and an even higher percentage of males over
60, though not all males will be subject to
symptoms of BPH.
13.
14. These symptoms can include more
frequent urination, an inability to
completely empty the bladder, a weak
urine stream, as well as painful and/or
bloody urination.
