NEC Backup as a Service reduces administrative tasks, helping it departments...InteractiveNEC
Cloud solutions continue to grow not only in adoption but also in importance in customer IT strategies. In typical risk-averse practices, cloud solutions were initially used near the fringes of IT environments, delivering test and development functions far outside most of the core mission-critical workloads sustaining internal and external business operations. Likewise, customers in regulated industries such as healthcare or government were initially wary of the security and performance of services delivered from third-party data centers. These dynamics are changing rapidly, however, as both the customer and vendor behavior around cloud have matured considerably. Cloud providers have expanded their data center locations, added almost every flavor of regulatory compliance, and enhanced security capabilities. These developments have dramatically lowered the traditional barriers to cloud adoption, allowing customers in almost any industry to have at least the possibility of deploying most of their workloads through cloud delivery methods.

Computer, network, and, more generally, data security have a growing subfield in Cloud Computing security, often known as cloud-based security. It, too, protects separate groups within a population by encrypting data in a structured hierarchy. There are significant risks and impediments to using cloud services, even though there are solid reasons for their use.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

What is colocation
1. What Is Colocation?
Colocation is an internet hosting service where organizations, be it large or small can
rent facilities such as network, physical space, electricity, cooling, storage facility, &
physical security for their servers or IT equipment.
2. Colocation service provider usually owns the infrastructure facilities also
termed as a datacenter which includes building, cooling systems,
etc. which is completely maintained and managed by the service provider.
Colocation is one of the most expensive forms of hosting service it is even
more expensive than managed hosting. But it is far cheaper as compared to
the price incurred in managing and maintaining a complete in-house
infrastructure.
Initially, organisations used to use colocation for disaster recovery purpose
solely. Nowadays organizations, be it large or small usually opt for
for cloud services and to reduce the massive amount of CAPEX and OPEX
associated with building, managing, maintaining & updating large
facility. There are certain standards for reliability which needs to be
maintained in datacenters or colocation facilities. The most common are
16 SOC 1 Type I and Type II (formerly SAS 70 Type I and Type II) and the tier
system by the Uptime Institute or TIA.
3. Colocation Infrastructure
The Infrastructure of a datacenter is developed keeping in mind the standards
since the very early site selection as in the site shouldn’t be a disaster-prone
vicinity be it natural or man-made it is also suggested to select the site with
lower temperature or suitable weather it helps in saving lot of energy & cost
required for cooling the facility. Construction of the site such as the walls of the
datacenter, the construction material used, proper insulation such as heating,
ventilation & air conditioning (HVAC) standards has to be met. Excessive heat
rise may result in malfunctioning of electrical and computing devices thus it is
very important to have a powerful air conditioning system in place. Datacenter
hosts very critical and crucial information of various companies and
organizations it is the service providers responsibility to keep this data and
information safe and secured from any disaster hence there also need to be a
reliable fire protection system & physical security in place. Along with this, the
network services &, power supply to maintain the promised uptimes, physical
security, cabinets, suites, cages, racks & modules etc. used in the datacenter
have to be maintained for their standards. According to the level of services and
infrastructure facilities, the datacenters are further classified into different
standards viz tier I, tier II, tier III etc.
4. Cons of Colocation Services
Colocation can be an ideal solution for some organizations but still, colocation
services have its own cons. In colocation, an organization or individual hosts their IT
infrastructures in the service providers infrastructure where distance can be a major
problem as it creates a lot of feasibility issues and increases costs considerably. Even
though the IT equipments are hosted at the service providers infrastructure but the
management and maintenance of the hardware is the owner’s responsibility. Any
updates or upgrades to the system or hardware have to be carried out by the owner
manually even a minor change in any hardware equipment’s can cost a lot of time
and money to the customer. In colocation services the customers have to get in
long-term contracts hence the customer has to bare the costs even if there is a
change in market rates.
5. The question remains, is colocation right for you? Colocation tends to be the right
option for the business that has outgrown managed web hosting but is not yet large
enough to make in-house web hosting and a dedicated IT department practical. Think
of colocation as a compromise between managed and in-house web hosting. What
does outgrowing managed hosting mean? Managed web hosting tends to force you to
think within the narrow preconceptions of the industry. Once this narrowness begins to
interfere with your vision, you have outgrown it.
