Index in sql server
Index is a database object, which can be created on one or more columns (16 Max column combinations). When creating the index will read the column(s) and forms a relevant data structure to minimize the number of data comparisons. The index will improve the performance of data retrieval and adds some overhead on data modification such as create, delete and modify. So it depends on how much data retrieval can be performed on table versus how much of DML (Insert, Delete and Update) operations

Apache Calcite Tutorial - BOSS 21
Apache Calcite is a dynamic data management framework. Think of it as a toolkit for building databases: it has an industry-standard SQL parser, validator, highly customizable optimizer (with pluggable transformation rules and cost functions, relational algebra, and an extensive library of rules), but it has no preferred storage primitives. In this tutorial, the attendees will use Apache Calcite to build a fully fledged query processor from scratch with very few lines of code. This processor is a full implementation of SQL over an Apache Lucene storage engine. (Lucene does not support SQL queries and lacks a declarative language for performing complex operations such as joins or aggregations.) Attendees will also learn how to use Calcite as an effective tool for research.

This session introduces eDB360 - a free tool that is executed from SQL*Plus and generates a set of reports providing a 360-degree view of an Oracle database; all without installing anything on the database.
If using Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) is off-limits for you or your team, and you can only access the database thorough a SQL*Plus connection with no direct access to the database server, then this tool is a perfect fit to provide you with a broad overview of the database configuration, performance, top SQL and much more. You only need a SQL*Plus account with read access to the data dictionary, and common Oracle licenses like the Diagnostics or the Tuning Pack.
Typical uses of this eDB360 tool include: databases health-checks, performance assessments, pre or post upgrade verifications, snapshots of the environment for later use, compare between two similar environments, documenting the state of a database when taking ownership of it, etc.
Once you learn how to use eDB360 and get to appreciate its value, you may want to execute this tool on all your databases on a regular basis, so you can keep track of things for long periods of time. This tool is becoming part of a large collection of goodies many DBAs use today.

Change Data Feed in Delta
Change Data Feed is a new feature of Delta Lake on Databricks that is available as a public preview since DBR 8.2. This feature enables a new class of ETL workloads such as incremental table/view maintenance and change auditing that were not possible before. In short, users will now be able to query row level changes across different versions of a Delta table.

Automating Data Quality Processes at Reckitt
Reckitt is a fast-moving consumer goods company with a portfolio of famous brands and over 30k employees worldwide. With that scale small projects can quickly grow into big datasets, and processing and cleaning all that data can become a challenge. To solve that challenge we have created a metadata driven ETL framework for orchestrating data transformations through parametrised SQL scripts. It allows us to create various paths for our data as well as easily version control them. The approach of standardising incoming datasets and creating reusable SQL processes has proven to be a winning formula. It has helped simplify complicated landing/stage/merge processes and allowed them to be self-documenting.
But this is only half the battle, we also want to create data products. Documented, quality assured data sets that are intuitive to use. As we move to a CI/CD approach, increasing the frequency of deployments, the demand of keeping documentation and data quality assessments up to date becomes increasingly challenging. To solve this problem, we have expanded our ETL framework to include SQL processes that automate data quality activities. Using the Hive metastore as a starting point, we have leveraged this framework to automate the maintenance of a data dictionary and reduce documenting, model refinement, testing data quality and filtering out bad data to a box filling exercise. In this talk we discuss our approach to maintaining high quality data products and share examples of how we automate data quality processes.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex Proofs
This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).
