Water pollution is the pollution of lakes, rivers, and streams caused by substances building up in the water. Common pollutants include coliform bacteria, which have built up to high levels in major Indian rivers like the Yamuna and Ganga. A 2008 study also found ground and tap water in villages along a nullah, or drain, contained fluoride, mercury, and pesticides in excess of permissible limits, posing risks to animals and people.

water.
