CONCEPT OF WATER POLLUTON
 Water pollution refers to
contaminants that enter
a waterway from a single
, identifiable source ,
such as pipe or ditch.
 Water pollution may
occurs in :-
 Ground water
 Surface water
 Rain water(Acid rain)
CAUSES OF WATER POLLUTION
Immersion of idols MAIN CAUSES
 Industrial waste
 Sewage and waste water
 Ocean and marine dumping
 Immersion of idols
 Livestock animals
 Over population
RIVER POLLUTION
MOST POLLUTED RIVERS
IN THE WORLD
EFFECTS OF RIVER
POLLUTION
 Citarum river,Indonesia
 Ganga river,India
 Mantanza-Riachuelo River,
Argentina
 Buriganga river ,Bangla-desh
 Yamuna river,India
 Widespread loss of marine
life including fresh water
dolphin(national aquatic
animal of india),Ghariyal
 Reduction of fresh water
 Diseases like
cholera,Hepatitis
A,Diarrhea,Dysentry,Malaria
e.t.c are occuring
DECLINE OF INDIA’S LIFELINE
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
 Water and air pollution in U.S. urban areas
continued to increase well into the 20th century.
 Chicago built the first major sewage system in the
United States to treat wastewater.
 The Cuyahoga river in Cleveland,Ohio, became so
polluted that water erupted into flames first fire
occurred in 1936, when a spark from a blowtorch
ignited floating debris and oils.
INITIATIVES AGAINST WATER
POLLUTION
 A three day national conference on issues for optimal use
of water resources called “Jal Manthan” was held at New
Delhi from 20 to November 22, 2014.
 Special teams set up by the Ministry of Water
Resources, River Development and Ganga
Rejuvenation have started submitting their reports.
 Water (prevention and control of pollution) Act, 1974
MY OWN OPINION
 People should be made aware about the
hazardous effects of water pollution.
 Strict rules should be implement by
government.
 Biodegradable waste should be decomposed
properly.
 Their should be separate reservoirs for
sewage and industrial waste dumping.
