The volcanic eruption on Montserrat from 1995-1997 was devastating for the island. Montserrat is a small Caribbean island that was heavily reliant on tourism and farming. In 1995, the previously dormant volcano erupted without warning. Over the next two years, repeated eruptions destroyed over 2/3 of the island, including the capital city of Plymouth. The eruptions forced over half the population to evacuate and caused widespread destruction of homes, farmland, infrastructure, and the local economy. The long term impacts included a decline in population from 11,000 to 4,000 as many people did not return after the eruptions ceased.
