Content Matter: Vocabulary

Goal: The goal of this lesson plan is to help my students better understand their

vocabulary words. I want them to be able to put the vocabulary words in their
own words, write sentences using the vocabulary words, and find resources and
pictures on the internet that relate to the words. This way in the future they will
have a bigger word bank and will be able to use these words in their
conversations. I will do this lesson with my students every week with their
vocabulary words.

Michigan Grade-Level Content Expectations (GLCEs):

Students will…
 R.WS.04.07 in context, determine the meaning of words and phrases including similes,
metaphors, content vocabulary, and literary terms using strategies and resources including
context clues, semantic feature analysis, and a thesaurus.


Michigan Educational Technology Standards (METS): Grades 3-5
3-5.CI.2. Use a variety of technology tools and applications to demonstrate his/her creativity by
creating or modifying works of art, music, movies, or presentations

OBJECTIVES: (This lesson plan takes about one week)

      •   Using powerpoint, I am going to give a short presentation with all five of
          the vocabulary words for that week and their definitions.

      •   It is the students’ job to explore those vocabulary words deeper. Each
          student will get one vocabulary word to explore. I will give every student a
          number: 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5, and the number you get determines what group
you are in and what vocabulary word you will be exploring.

   •   Each group will put the definition of their vocabulary word in their own
       words, write five sentences using that word, write one metaphor using the
       vocabulary word, and find two resources that have to do with the
       vocabulary word. The resources could be a webpage, a picture, or a
       video.

   •   The students will be making separate Google Docs for all of the different
       parts they need to explore using the vocabulary word.

   •   All of these Google Docs will be posted on our class vocabulary Wiki
       page.

   •   At the end of the week, each group will show the class how they explored
       their vocabulary word.

   •   On the Monday after the presentations, I will be testing the students on the
       definition of the vocabulary words. The students can study over the
       weekend by looking through the Wiki page online.

Assessment: I will be assessing my students all week. I will be walking around the

classroom while they are working on their Google Docs to see if they are staying
on task. Then I will be grading their understanding of the vocabulary word: If they
understand the meaning, if they put it into sentences correctly, if they put it into a
metaphor correctly, and their use of the Internet. They will receive one grade for
the whole week for the lesson and then will be tested on all five vocabulary words
on the Monday after the presentations.

Learning outcomes:

   •   This lesson will help the students have a deeper understanding of the
       meaning of words.

   •   I want them to be able to have a broad vocabulary and use these words
everyday in their conversation.

   •   When a student has a bigger vocabulary, they are able to comprehend
       text better and write formal papers.

   •   I want them to be able to use these vocabulary words in their papers in the
       future.

   •   For the students to learn how to find resources on the Internet that have to
       do with a certain topic.

Why I Choose this technology: I chose to use Powerpoint for my presentation

because it is something I am familiar with and since I have to put a vocabulary
presentation together every week, it is fast. It is a good way for the students to
learn because it keeps them engaged. I am using a Wiki page because all of the
students work will be in one place. This way it is easy for me to grade, easy for
the students to share their work with the class, and also easy for the students
because they can study over the weekend because they have access to the Wiki
page at home. The lesson plan as a whole is better than traditional means
because the students are using the Internet. I think that today students are really
interested in technology and the Internet and this lesson plan allows for the
students to find resources related to their vocabulary, so it lets them explore
pictures, webpages, and videos.

The resources could be a webpage, a picture, or a video. • The students will be making separate Google Docs for all of the different parts they need to explore using the vocabulary word. • All of these Google Docs will be posted on our class vocabulary Wiki page. • At the end of the week, each group will show the class how they explored their vocabulary word. • On the Monday after the presentations, I will be testing the students on the definition of the vocabulary words. The students can study over the weekend by looking through the Wiki page online. Assessment: I will be assessing my students all week. I will be walking around the classroom while they are working on their Google Docs to see if they are staying on task. Then I will be grading their understanding of the vocabulary word: If they understand the meaning, if they put it into sentences correctly, if they put it into a metaphor correctly, and their use of the Internet. They will receive one grade for the whole week for the lesson and then will be tested on all five vocabulary words on the Monday after the presentations. Learning outcomes: • This lesson will help the students have a deeper understanding of the meaning of words. • I want them to be able to have a broad vocabulary and use these words
  • 3. everyday in their conversation. • When a student has a bigger vocabulary, they are able to comprehend text better and write formal papers. • I want them to be able to use these vocabulary words in their papers in the future. • For the students to learn how to find resources on the Internet that have to do with a certain topic. Why I Choose this technology: I chose to use Powerpoint for my presentation because it is something I am familiar with and since I have to put a vocabulary presentation together every week, it is fast. It is a good way for the students to learn because it keeps them engaged. I am using a Wiki page because all of the students work will be in one place. This way it is easy for me to grade, easy for the students to share their work with the class, and also easy for the students because they can study over the weekend because they have access to the Wiki page at home. The lesson plan as a whole is better than traditional means because the students are using the Internet. I think that today students are really interested in technology and the Internet and this lesson plan allows for the students to find resources related to their vocabulary, so it lets them explore pictures, webpages, and videos.
