  • 1. Using Simulations and Digital Media to Reduce Bullying Behaviors in Schools Edina Renfro-Michel, Ph.D., LPC, ACS
  • 2. Agenda  Understanding the school through survey  Developing and implementing a simulation  Integrating digital media  Movie Day!  Integrating project into peer mediation
  • 3. Two Pilot Projects  School #5 Patterson  Group #1 – 10 students 4-7th grade  Group #2 – 17 students in a Self-contained 4-6th grade class
  • 4. Survey  Goals  Determine any victims and intense bullies  Determine students in need of counseling  Identify student knowledge  Baseline data
  • 5. Developing the Simulation  Use Survey Data and Teacher Interviews to Determine the Roles of Students  Determine logistical specifics  Determine Schedule  Homeroom (announcements!)  English  PE  Lunch
  • 6. Running the Program  Four Roles  Bullies  Popular  Victims (the majority of students)  Scapegoats  Lesson Plans for each ‘class period’  Adjusted as necessary
  • 7. Post-Simulation Processing  What was this experience like for you?  What did you learn about yourself?  What did you learn about others?  Discussion of bullying, types of bullying and what they saw in simulation.
  • 8. Digital Media  Goals  Integrate new knowledge  Using literacy tools, develop a 2-3 minute PSA  Storyboard  Google!  Using iMovie
  • 9. Final Projects  First Day of School  Help Stop Bullying  Don't Bully  So What I'm "PHAT"
  • 10. Movie Day!  Invited Family Members  Invited 4th Grade Class
  • 11. Results of Program  Students felt empowered  Videos used in classrooms  Students had empathy for others  Students began to work as a team
  • 12. Peer Mediation Integration  Begin peer mediation program with participants  Teach negotiation and communication skills  Continue discussion of empathy and bullying  Teach how to intervene in bullying situations  Each group helps to train the next group
