This lesson plan is for a 4th grade class of 20 students to learn about the cultures and traditions of four holidays: Hanukkah, Ramadan, Kwanzaa, and Epiphany. Students will watch videos, complete a WebQuest, play a dreidel game when learning about Hanukkah, and work in groups to create PowerPoint presentations on one of the holidays to present to the class. The teacher will preview all materials to ensure they are appropriate, set up the classroom environment, lead a discussion to engage the students, and require participation from all students in the activities. Students will be evaluated on their WebQuest and final presentations.

1. Analyze Learners
This lesson is prepared for students in a 4th grade class. This class has a total of 20 students. There are 11
girls and 9 boys. There are 2 Muslims, 3 Jewish students, and 2 African Americans.
State Objective
4th grade students will identify the cultures that each holiday—Hanukkah, Ramadan, Kwanzaa, and
Epiphany—belongs to, as well as some of the traditions associated with that holiday. Students will watch
videos on YouTube, complete a WebQuest, playing a game, and creating a PowerPoint presentation in
groups about one of the 4 holidays and presenting them to the class with 95% accuracy by the end of the
week.
Select Methods, Media, and Materials
Videos: The students will watch videos to introduce each holiday
WebQuest: The students will complete a WebQuest that explores each of the 4 holidays we study.
Game: When studying the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, students will play the dreidel game, which is
popular among Jewish boys and girls.
PowerPoint/Computers: Students will be broken into 4 groups of 5 and assigned one of the 4 holidays.
They will use computers to further research their holiday and to create a PowerPoint to present to the
class.
Utilize Materials
Preview Materials: The teacher will watch each video to ensure they are appropriate and accurately depict
the various holidays. The teacher will read the rules of the dreidel game to make sure she knows how it is
played in case there are any questions. The teacher will review the WebQuest to make sure the sites are
appropriate and contain the necessary information.
Prepare Materials: The teacher will make sure that the videos will play without any trouble. The teacher
will make a list dividing the students into groups for the dreidel game and for the group presentation. She
will make sure she has enough copies of the dreidel game directions and enough dreidels for each group.
Prepare the Environment: The classroom is already set up so that each student can see the teacher as she
presents the information. The teacher will make sure she has access to YouTube (or that she has
downloaded the videos from YouTube) and the videos are able to be displayed on the smart board and
that it is located where all of the students can see it.
Prepare the Learners: The teacher will prepare the learners by guiding a discussion of their favorite
holidays and holiday traditions.
Provide the Learning Experience: The teacher will be excited about what she is teaching so that she might
inspire excitement in her students.
Require Learner Participation
Students are encouraged to ask questions at any time throughout the lesson. All students will participate

2. in their groups by playing the game and working on their group presentations. All students will also be
required to complete the WebQuest. At the end of the week, the groups will present their holidays to the
class.
Evaluate and Revise
Students will be evaluated on the completion and accuracy of their WebQuest as well as their final project
at the end of the week.
