Unit Goals and Objectives:
By the end of this unit, students will be able to compare and contrast about how different cultures celebrate and value Halloween.
Students will be able to research information on the internet and cite their sources while providing factual evidence to support their
answers.
Unit Summary:
This unit is for 9th grade English Language Arts students that are ready to learn! Students will compare and contrast about how different
cultures celebrate Halloween. Students will learn that each culture celebrates Halloween differently than others and that there are some
cultures who value this holiday more than others. Students will be able to learn how to research information on the web and learn how to
provide factual evidence. Students will also learn how to properly cite information they receive from a website or any other resources.
AssessmentPlan:
Entry-Level:
Students will writea quick write to assess their
prior knowledge about how different countries
around the world celebrate Halloween.
Formative:
Students will completea quiz about different
Halloween traditions. Students will writea quick
writeof what they have learned so far inthe lesson.
The teacher will hold a discussiononcea week

will create flashcards about different themes and
beliefs about Halloweenfor each individual
country.
Summative:
Students will be given a multiple choicequestion
exam about all the countries they researched about.
Students will present their posters boards to the
class with their group.

Lesson Activities:
Students are grouped in pairs of up to five people. Students should have
questions on their poster boards with answers that include evidence from
different sources. Students will present their poster boards at the end of the
class with their groups. They will discuss to the class about their questions
that they came up with from the readings and videos about how different
countries around the world celebrate Halloween. Students who are
presenting will interact with their classmates by sharing their answers and
opinions. They will also give positive feedback to their classmates when
their classmates express their opinions and knowledge.

website that is printed on
the assignment.

Students will fill inthe

spaces for questions one
through eight.

about. There are three topics that each includes a specific website. Students
will research on the specific website for each topic in order to find specific
answers for each question.
