What is a media institution?
A media institution is an established, and
often profit based organization, that deals in
the creation and distribution of advertising,
entertainment and information services. It
helps in gathering information, and
perceptions about different groups of
people and their originality which will help
sell their products.
Examples:
'What kind of media institution
(publisher) might distribute your
media product and why?'
I have chosen to get my magazine published by the BBC as it is one of the leading publishers in
the UK. Although in 2009 the Immediate Media company bought BBC magazines. They
previously published a magazine known as ‘Its Hot’ which has now departed. This gives my
magazine an opportunity to attract a new audience in replace of the magazine ‘Its Hot’. They
publish over 50 magazines with 23 being sold worldwide.
It also produces a huge range of genres and also publishes a well known magazine known as
‘Top of the Pops’ which is similar to my magazine. The psycho-graphic category is mainstream
as it appeals to a wide range of audiences from different ages therefore making it successful.
Therefore my magazine will have a large fan base as its similar to ‘Top of the Pop’s’ which will
increase the sells on my magazine and boost its popularity.
 Distribution methods that I will use, will allow my magazine to be for sell in a number of
popular retailers for example WHSMITH as well as newsagents. Supermarkets have
become a place known to purchase magazines therefore I would also distribute my
magazine to well known supermarkets retailers such as Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury.
 This will be clearly visible to my target audience as people nowadays tend to shop with
their families which will allow my target audience of girls aged 13-17, who would most
likely be with their parents. This will enable them to purchase my magazine when they
visit the store.
 Lastly, consumers will also have the opportunity to purchase the magazine via Amazon.
While also having the chance to subscribe and receive the magazine once a month
through the post. This persuade my audience to purchase the magazine as they will
receive discounts and will not need to put in much effort as payments will be taken
automatically while they receive the magazine in the post a few days later. Distributing
the magazine monthly will allow editors to gather the relevant gossip which is enjoyed by
my target audience to keep them occupied.
