Social Media in the
Classroom
Objective: Students will learn to use social media appropriately for education.
Johnta Owens-Lillie
11th Grade
No Longer a Distraction
 Social media is an ingrained part of today’s society. Our students are
constantly on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and likely many sites we’re not
hip enough to know about, and by reading this blog, you’re interacting with
social media at this very moment. If you want to bring the “real world” into
the classroom, consider integrating social media into your lessons.
Using Facebook as a Tool
 Sending Messages
 Follow latest news feeds
 Sharing book reviews
 Practice a foreign language
 Bring literature to life
 Create groups
 Create your own news source
Using Facebook for weekly articles
 Facebook is a broad research tool that can help with weekly assignments like
current events, articles, and blogs.
 Being able to use your news feed on Facebook can help with finding, and or
creating a weekly current events article assignment.
Creating Study Groups
 Studying outside of classroom is an essential key in being a great student.
 Facebook as well as other sites like GROUPME, remember app, skype, etc. are
great tools to use for group discussion, projects, and study groups.
Using Snapchat To Help You Learn
 Book Snaps are a great tool for learning how, and doing annotations for class.
 ANY subject can take a picture of their reading, react to it, and submit that
annotation back to you easily and with a lot more engagement than standard
annotating practices.
 Writing Stories: students could make quick ten second videos and then either
stitch them together in video editing software or submit via a Google slide.
It’s engaging for them, requires mastery (for the most part), and is easy to
collect and grade. That’s a win!
Using Twitter For Research
 Any student can quickly and easily find high authority research material using
Twitter in education. All they need to do is type in the search bar relevant
keywords, and they will receive a list with dozens of relevant websites and
blogs. There is also the option to search for specific phrases, key figures,
discussion topics, relevant discussion forums, etc.
 Twitter Research Tools:
 TweetStats
 Trendrr
 Tweetmeme
 Twellow
Social Media Etiquette In The Classroom
 Keep all class matters private
 Always use good grammar when using social media in the classroom
 Do not say any negative comment towards classmates while on social media in
class.
 Do not abuse the privilege by not staying on task.
