This document discusses verb conjugation in Spanish. There are three types of verbs ending in AR, ER, and IR. Verbs are conjugated based on subject (yo, tu, el, nosotros, ellos) by removing the infinitive ending and adding the appropriate ending. AR verbs add -o, -as, -a, -amos, -an. ER and IR verbs are similar but have different endings for nosotros (-emos, -imos). Examples of conjugating regular verbs like cocinar, comer, and escribir are provided for each subject. The formal "you" is Usted.

2. Types There are three types of verbs in Spanish. They are AR Ex. Cocinar (to cook) ER Ex. Comer (to eat) IR Ex. Escribir (to write) This means that all verbs end in one of the above sets of letters.

3. Subjects There are five main subjects: I/yo you/tú he, she, you (formal), it/él, ella, Usted we/nosotros they, youguys (youall)/ellos, Ustedes Note: Spanishalso has the Vosotros form, butthatisonlyused in Spain and willnotbediscussed in thisclass.

4. Tenses Just like in English, Spanish has many different tenses of verbs. For example Present tense Preterit tense Imperfect tense Right now we will be focusing on the present tense

5. Conjugation In order to use these verbs we must conjugate them by using certain endings . These endings vary depending on the type of verb (AR, ER, or IR). Right now we will be focusing on regular verbs, however, it is important to know that not all verbs are regular, as we will see later on.

6. Present tense – AR verbs For verbs ending with –ar… Take off the “ar” Add one of the new endings. Which ending you use depends on what subject you are using.

7. Present tense – AR verbs Here are the regular endings for “-ar” verbs in the present tense: yo: -o tú: -as él: -a nosotros: -amos ellos: -an

9. Presenttense – ER verbs Both ER and IR verbs take off their endings too. ER verbs have somewhat different ends than AR verbs however. yo: -o tú: -es él: -e nosotros: -emos ellos: -en

11. Present Tense – IR verbs IR verbs also have some different endings than AR verbs. In fact, IR verbs have almost exactly the same endings as the ER verbs, with only one difference (the “nosotros” form)
