INTRO OF PUNCTUATION
Definition…
The manners in which an ongoing communicate
process and/or interaction sequence is punctuated determines
the meaning attributed to it and how each person’s behavior
will be evaluated, that is, who is responsible or “guilty,” and
how one decides to react.
Example..
1. Are you going ?
2. I m going .
3. He has two notebooks , three books and four pencils .
WHY WE USE PUNCTUATION MARKS?
Basic types of Punctuation Marks
Period
COMMA
COLON
Question Mark
PARENTHESIS
EXCLAMATION
SEMI COLON
HYPHEN
Apostrophe
PERIOD
Rule to use period
Use at the end of a complete
sentence and also use at the end of an
indirect question, Abbreviation, websites
(URL).
Example.
• He went to school.
• He asked where the milk was.
• We need commas to separate
items, Words, city from state, date
in a list.
Example…
• I have two pens, one register and
a file cover.
• He live in Australia, America.
• He died June 24th, 1998.
Commas
Any other reason for
commas?
• We also use commas to
separate clauses in complex
sentences.
• The boy was playing with a
football, which had been signed
by Wayne Rooney.
WHERE WE USE COMMA?
• Use a comma after a dependent clause that starts a sentence.
Example: “when I went running, I saw a duck.”
• A dependent clause is a Grammatical unit that contains both subject and verb but
cannot stand on its own, Like
Example: “when I went running…”commas always follow these clauses at the
start of a sentence.”
COLON :
Rule to use colon
use a colon after a complete sentence to
introduce the list of items and also use it after the
greeting of the person’s name in business letter.
Example…
• Rasheed was so hungry he ate everything in
the house: chips, cold, pizza, peanut butter
and candy.
• Dear Mr. Khan:
• I had a rough weekend: I had chest pain and
spent all Saturday and Sunday in the
emergency room.
Question Mark
Rule to use Question mark
it is used at the end of direct
Questions.
The question mark has a very simple
function in writing — it indicates a
question
Example…
• How are you ?
• What is time ?
• Are you single ?
Direct questions within a sentence
• “What are we having for dinner?” his son asked.
• Would they make it on time? she wondered
Requests
• Would you please send this report to the person
indicated on the cover ?
• Can you please help me with this question?
PARENTHESIS ( )
Rule to use the Parenthesis
it use when you are giving an
additional information in any sentence and
abbreviation, district mention, date mention
in a sentences.
Example…
• He received one hundred and fifty points
(150) on his math project.
• Fatima (8 years –old) is a little girl who
goes to school with his brother.
• She was really worried.(although her dad
gave her permission). She had to
convince her mother and had to pack her
things.
EXCLAMATION MARK
Rule to use Exclamation !
use it to show your extreme situation.
Example…
• Summer is in three months !
• Hurrah! She purposed me.
• “shut up!” she shouted.
SEMI COLON ;
Rule to use semi colon
it is use to join two or more
ideas/parts in a sentences. Those ideas are then
given equal position or rank.
Example…
• I have a big test tomorrow; I cannot go outside
tonight.
• Ali got late; there was a storm on his way.
HYPHEN _
Rule to use Hyphen
it use to join words and to separate
syllables of a single word.it shows relation.
Example…
• Quid-e-Azam- the liberator
• Eighty-one (Tab)
It also shows continuity.
• Co-education
• Pre-examination
The apostrophe ( ' or ' ) character is a
punctuation mark, it is a Latin alphabet. In English it is
used for several purposes: The marking of the omission of
one or more letters (as in the contraction of do not to
don't).
Apostrophe (’)
The dog’s tail wagged rapidly.
Yesterday’s weather was dreadful.
EXAMPLE…
See also it's or its?
Apostrophes showing omission
An apostrophe can be used to show that letters or numbers
have been omitted. Here are some examples of apostrophes
that indicate missing letters:
I’m - short for I am
he’ll - short for he will
she’d – short for she had or she would
pick ’n’ mix - short for pick and mix
it’s hot - short for it is hot
didn’t - short for did not
A slash or slant or solidus or virgule [ / ] (take your pick
of names) is used to indicate a choice between the
words it separates.
There are two types of slashes: a backslash () and a forward slash (/).
The backslash is used only for computer coding. The forward slash, often
simply referred to as a slash, is a punctuation mark used in English.
EXAMPLE…
When leaving the classroom, the teacher noticed
that a student had left his/her backpack.
Burgers or pizza for dinner? Yeah, either/or is fine
with me.
SLASH: (/)
To Form Abbreviations
Slashes can also be used to form some abbreviations or
shortened forms of words or phrases, although these
shouldn’t be used in formal writing.
w/o = without = with c/o = care of (used when posting a
letter or parcel) a/c = air conditioning
Notice that in these cases, no space is necessary after the
slash.
