Waves are created by wind blowing over the surface of the sea. As waves enter shallower water, they break. Swash is the movement of waves up the beach during breaking, while backwash is the movement back down the beach. Longshore drift is the process where waves cause sediment to be transported parallel to the shore and eventually deposited elsewhere along the coast. Transportation refers to the movement of sediments, while deposition is the dropping off of sediments in a new location.
