The document discusses using personas to capture the assistive technology and accessibility needs of people with disabilities. It describes how the ÆGIS and ACCESSIBLE projects developed personas based on real users to represent different user groups and their characteristics, problems, needs and preferences. Personas were created to help designers better understand and empathize with target users to ensure their needs are considered throughout the design and development process. Over 30 personas were created across both projects for people with various impairments including visual, hearing, motor and cognitive impairments.

Washington Evaluators Brown Bag by June Gothberg and Jennifer Sullivan-Sulewski January 31, 2012 Evaluators are often tasked with insuring representative samples in their work. Many populations have been tagged as hard-to-reach and therefore make this task difficult in many evaluation efforts. People with disabilities and members of other vulnerable populations such as people who are homeless, chronically ill, economically disadvantaged, low literate, English language learners, elderly, and prisoners are frequently involved in or affected by evaluation efforts, regardless of the specific topic of the evaluation. Designing evaluations to include people with disabilities and other vulnerable populations is thus an essential skill for ensuring that these populations are fairly represented and included in the evaluation process. In the last two years, awareness has increased among evaluators at-large as to the importance of designing evaluation and data collection tools to include all people. Due to this, Universal Design has taken a forefront position. Out of this demand for assistance to increase capacity in this area, the idea for a Universal Design for Evaluation (UDE) checklist emerged. This session will introduce the seven principles of universal design, the UDE checklist, and their application to evaluation. Participants will add to their knowledge and skills to increase involvement for people with disabilities and other vulnerable populations in evaluation. The session will end with a discussion of next steps to increase partnerships between agencies, evaluators, and the American Evaluation Association. June Gothberg is a researcher at Western Michigan University’s Connecting Careers Research Center where she is project technical assistance coordinator for the National Secondary Transition Technical Assistance Center focused on improving special education and transition services for students with disabilities. Jennifer Sullivan-Sulewski is a Research Associate at the Institute for Community Inclusion, University of Massachusetts Boston. She has conducted or managed numerous research and evaluation projects, primarily related to day and employment services and supports for people with disabilities. She received her Ph.D. in Social Policy from Brandeis University in 2006. Together they co-chair the Disabilities and Other Vulnerable Populations Topical Interest Group for the American Evaluation Association. Through this role, they co-produced the Universal Design for Evaluation model and the Universal Design for Evaluation checklist. This seminal model is fostering a paradigm to build capacity to include all individuals during the planning, implementation, analysis, and dissemination of evaluation.

AEGIS-ACCESSIBLE Projects

The current presentation presents the approach followed for the derivation of the Use Cases developed in the context of ÆGIS Integrating Project (Grant Agreement: 224348) of the 7th Framework Programme, which constitute the core outputs of the user needs phase of the project, together with the Personas and the conceptual models, setting the basis for the upcoming development and evaluation phases of the project. ÆGIS aims to embed support for accessibility through the development of an Open Accessibility Framework (OAF), upon which, open source accessibility interfaces and applications for the users as well as accessibility toolkits for the developers will be built. Within ÆGIS, three mainstream markets are targeted, namely the desktop, rich Internet applications and mobile devices/applications market segments. The Use Cases developed address all three application areas, targeted by ÆGIS. The User Centred Design (UCD) plan defined from the early beginning of the initiative constituted the cornerstone of the work for the Use Cases, Personas and conceptual models. Following this plan, the project Use Cases have built on the outcomes of the field trials and the workshops (national and Pan-European), where a representative sample of all ÆGIS targeted user groups has participated and the valuable expertise of the ÆGIS Consortium members. Following a concrete development methodology, 36 Use Cases (12 for desktop, 15 for mobile and 9 for rich Internet applications), accompanied by Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams, 17 Personas covering all major target groups of the project and 13 conceptual models, which are mapped to the Use Cases, have emerged. The Use Cases will be further elaborated to specific application scenarios that will orient the evaluation to take place in ÆGIS in three iterative phases and across 4 Pilot sites (Belgium, Spain, Sweden and in the UK). The Use Cases are seen as working document, which may be subject to updates and revisions throughout the project, following and keeping up with the progress noticed in ÆGIS project and the overall open source accessibility community.

This presentation outlines the findings of two surveys that were conducted throughout Europe by two FP7 projects (ÆGIS and ACCESSIBLE), addressing the specific needs for AT ICT (Assistive Technologies for ICT applications) and accessibility in the area of desktop, web and mobile accessibility, while also understanding the needs of the developing community with regards to assessment and simulation tools to enable them in ensuring their developed applications are accessible to an as wide as possible audience. Based on the collected data, a large number of commonalities were pinpointed across all targeted user groups in all countries where the survey was conducted. As a next step to support a fully user centred design within the projects, a whole range of personas were defined, depicting people with disabilities in a variety of (working) environments. The presented findings are at present being used for the development of open source assistive technologies, development, assessment and simulation tools to support accessibility for desktop, mobile, web and rich internet applications.

User interfaces are omnipresent in daily consumer goods, whether it is in the usage of brown goods or the access to the menu of a DVD player, as well as in the Ambient Assistive Living services that are being established like for example in the OASIS project and which will be provided to older people. Considering the growing number of older people and the directly linked increasing number of disabilities that will appear accordingly, OASIS project has taken the step to consider accessible user interfaces (UI) from the very beginning using a variety of interaction technologies. In addition, it will also have its interfaces assessed by using the assessment tools provided by the ACCESSIBLE project that focuses on ensuring web, desktop and mobile interfaces are fully accessible from the very beginning, without any adjusting afterwards.

The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
