Discover What You Want
Discover What You Want:
   Master Instructor Style
0 If you were a student, what expectations might you
  have?
0 What do you expect your students to get out of this
  chapter?
Learning Styles Inventory
Learning Styles Inventory:
  Master Instructor Style
0 Take the LSI.
0 Are you gearing your lectures and class activities only
toward those that fit your style?
0 Are you adapting your teaching style to meet the
learning styles and needs of your students?
Turn “F” Into Feedback
Turn “F” Into Feedback
0 On what material did the teacher base test questions- readings, lectures,
  discussions, or other class activities?

0 What types of questions appeared in the test – objective (matching, T/F, multiple
  choice), or short-answer/essay?

0 What types of questions did you miss?

0 Can you learn anything from the instructor’s comments that will help you prepare
  for the next test?

0 Can you now correctly answer the questions that you missed?

0 Did you make any of the mistakes mentioned in “Test taking errors and ways to
  avoid them” on page 68?

0 Write a brief plan for avoiding test-taking errors in the future.
Turn “F” Into Feedback:
    Master Instructor Style
0 What was your test material based on?
0 What types of questions appeared in the test?
0 Did students have difficulty with certain types of
  questions?
0 Did the students provide any comments about why
  they did not do well?
0 Can they demonstrate mastery of the test material in
  other ways?
Take the Next Step In Finding
    Your Speaking Voice
Taking the Next Step in
Finding Your Speaking Voice
Discovery Statement
0 Think back to the last time you were called upon to speak before a group. Write
what you remember about that situation. Describe things such as physical
sensations you experienced before and during the presentation, the overall
effectiveness of your presentation, and any feedback you received from the
  audience.

Intention Statement
0 Based on what you wrote above, what would you like to do differently the next
time you speak? Describe the most important thing that you could do to become
   a more effective speaker.

Action Statement
0 Review the chapter for 5 suggestions that could help you make your intention a
reality. Summarize each suggestion along with the related page number.
0 Finally, choose 1 strategy from the list above that you will definitely use for your
  next presentation.
Finding Your Speaking Voice:
   Master Instructor Style
Discovery Statement
0 Think about a topic that you present in class that never seems to
get your students motivated. What are you experiencing before
and during the presentation? Rate your effectiveness. What kind
of feedback do you get from your students?

Intention Statement
0 What do you think you should do differently next time? Get
feedback from your colleagues about their experiences and
  brainstorm ideas.

Action Statement
0 Discuss steps you could take to make your intention(s) a reality.
Practice the Art of Saying No
Practice the Art of Saying No
Discovery Statement
0 Recall a situation when you wanted to say no to someone but did
not. Were you making assumptions about how the other person
would react? If so, describe what you were thinking.

Intention Statement
0 Consider some strategies for giving someone a no that’s both
polite and firm. Describe those strategies.

Action Statement
0 Choose some key phrases in advance that will help you to
  effectively deliver your next no.
Practice the Art of Saying No:
   Master Instructor Style
Discovery Statement
0 Is there a classroom management issue or situation that
arises in which you find it difficult to say no to your
  students? Describe that situation.

Intention Statement
0 Consider some strategies for standing your ground and
  sticking to your rules/policies.

Action Statement
0 Choose some key phrases in advance that will help you to
  effectively deliver your next no.
Try On A New Interpretation
Try On A New Interpretation
0 Think of a recent situation when you were in conflict
with someone. In the chart, brainstorm a list of any
behaviors that were involved in this conflict. List each
behavior on a separate line. Then think of two ways to
interpret each behavior. Finally, place a plus sign (+)
next to any interpretation that could increase conflict.
Then place a minus sign (-) next to any interpretation
 that could decrease conflict.
Try On A New Interpretation:
   Master Instructor Style
0 Think of a time when a student exhibited “less than
desirable” behavior. List at least 2 ways to interpret
this behavior. Could their behavior be linked to issues
they are dealing with outside of the classroom? Are
they exhibiting these behaviors in other classes?
Discovery Wheel

limitations at the beginning and end of the course

Discovery Wheel: Master
       Instructor Style
0 Work with other faculty members to come up with 5-
10 categories/areas that are important in order to be
  an effective instructor.
0 Identify 5 statements that relate to each of those
areas. These statements should reflect ideal
  behavior/methods/pedagogy, etc.
0 Rate yourself from 1-5 for each statement. Add your
  ratings in each area.
0 Create your Discovery Wheel to identify areas of
  strength and areas for improvement.
Thanks For Participating!
