This study examines the threat of money ritual among youths in Nigeria, a subject that has received little or no sufficient academic attention and it socio political and national under pinning have largely been ignored in state responses. The apparent downward trend in socio economic greediness and quest for material possession, have led to increase in the number of youth using fetish practices to come to term with prevailing socio economic demands. The focus of this paper therefore is to critically analyze the upsurge of money ritual among youths in Nigeria. Pivoting the theoretical framework of the study on Robert .K. Merton’s anomie strain theory, to the effect that “Innovation†in which goals are pursued but legitimate means is eliminated, and illegitimate means is created and used. The paper concludes that money ritual is a threat to national security and therefore, recommends among others, provision of employment opportunities to jobless youth, effective policies to combat the scourge of poverty, address the widening gap of inequality, and reward core value of honesty and hard work review of security architects. The Foundation and Political Economy of Corruption in Nigeria: “Between Fact ...paperpublications3
Abstract: Amongst the lasting challenges of development and growth of Nigeria and Nigerians none exceed that of corruption and its control. The paper analysed the basis of corruption as advanced by the revisionist theorists and a realistic overview of the incidence of corruption in Nigeria. Using a conflicting approach, the pepper submits that, revisionists’ belief is an erroneous assumption and a figment of the imagination of the west, which upholds that, corruption is rooted and imbedded in the normative socialisation and the cultural orientation of Africans. This paper therefore argued critically against this misrepresentation of Africans, particularly Nigerian that it is not just academically misleading but intellectually unsustainable. The paper concludes that the emergence and spread of corruption is traced to the economic philosophy of capitalism which encourages and promotes indiscriminate capital accumulation for not just recognition but tenacious oppressive tendencies. There is need for a more robust academic approach in the assessment and analysis of the socio-political and economic challenges of any society for a realistic conclusion. Secondly, consideration should be given to the African writers who live and study the environmental challenges of the affected societies for first hand and unbiased findings.

Effects of spiritual capital on muslim economy the case of malaysiaAlexander Decker
This document discusses the effects of spiritual capital on the Muslim economy in Malaysia. It focuses on how the shared Islamic beliefs of the Malay people helped project their economy from one that was previously disadvantaged to one that is now looked to as a leader in Islamic finance. Three key Islamic institutions in Malaysia - Islamic financial institutions, zakat institutions, and waqf institutions - are examined in terms of how they have positively contributed to the micro and macro economy through savings, consumption, investment, growth, and poverty alleviation. The introduction of these institutions is linked to an Islamic resurgence movement in Malaysia that sought to re-establish Islamic values and practices in government and society following the secularization that occurred during colonial rule.

Corruption Political Party System and Nigerian Democracy An Historical Analys...ijtsrd
Liberal democracy all over the world is a welcome phenomenon. In every modern society the game of politics is influenced tremendously by the elite class that projects the political culture which could make or mar democracy, as a result of the activities of the political parties. The adoption of western democracy is a mixed bag of blessing and catastrophes in the body politics of the country. Today, it is difficult to reconcile Nigerian democracy with that of the advanced democratic Countries. In Nigeria, politics is regarded as a “dirty game” which scares away the down trodden people. It has been noted that the level of socio economic development in the country is significantly related to the nature of politics in vogues. Political parties are primarily aimed at primitive accumulation of wealth. Where, “the end justifies the means” . The prevailing election rigging, thuggery, corruption, fear and intimidation by security agencies as well as hate speech in the campaigns of the politicians reflect value degeneration with the attendant instability in the country’s democracy. To this send, the paper examined political parties in Nigeria An historical Perspective from 1960 – 2019 looking at the roles of political parties as they affect the consolidation of democracy in Nigeria. Three 3 theoretical frameworks were used in the study namely Social learning theory SLT , Social Disorganization theory SDT and Corruption Permissiveness theory CPT .The study noted that Nigeria’s political parties from 1960 2019 has witnessed some challenging situation like ethnicity, corruption, violence, military intervention, civil and electoral deficiencies. Based on the findings, the study recommended among others that registered political parties should not be vehicles for the articulation and implementation of ethnic, religious or regional projects and programmes and that they should remain national in scope, courage and orientation. Predictors and Incidence of Kidnapping in Contemporary Nigeria: A Socio-Crimi...paperpublications3
Abstract: In this paper, which is essentially a literature review, the researcher undertook a critical investigation into the major predictors and incidence of kidnapping in contemporary Nigeria. The paper further reviewed the various scholars’ and media pundits’ perspectives on kidnapping. Nigeria is in the throes of kidnapping occasioned by a multiplicity of both individual risk factors and social forces. The rising incidence of kidnapping is disturbingly high and destructive to both human and capital development in the country. The current pattern or trend of kidnapping in contemporary Nigeria is a basket case; little wonder therefore that the latest global ranking placed Nigeria as the fourth most notorious kidnapping nation where people can be easily kidnapped with impunity. The quest to settle political differences, inordinate ambition to acquire and accumulate wealth, poverty and social exclusion, perpetual pains of unemployment, and reaction to existing detestable social and political developments are some of the main causes of kidnapping in Nigeria. The central policy implication of this paper is that it will guide security agencies and policy makers on crime and criminality in making reliable policies that will reduce the incidence of kidnapping in Nigeria to the barest minimum.

It begins by examining definitions of the term "minority" that have been proposed, noting there is no universally accepted definition. It then discusses the need for minority rights protections given that minorities are often politically marginalized and vulnerable to discrimination. The document traces how minority rights developed after World War I through the League of Nations, and then the United Nations adopted further protections like the 1992 Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities. Key international legal instruments that protect minority rights are also identified.
Issues of population explosion has evoked several images characterized by
emotional, value-laden and often paranoiac connotation that cannot be obviously
ignored considering its threatening challenges. It is against the foregoing that this
paper attempt to interrogate the relevance of Thomas Malthus theory on population and
the challenges of the bourgeoning population explosion in Nigeria. The core objective
of this paper is to investigate the relevance of the theory on Nigeria’s population. Other
objectives are to ascertain the effects of the population explosion on the Nigerian urban
areas; food security, crimes and security and poverty. In terms of methodology, the
paper relies on an explanatory design and some empirical data generated through
secondary sources and official documents were examined. The data were analysed using
a descriptive method of analysis. The paper identified the relevance of Malthus theory
on the bourgeoning population explosion on the following key areas: Food Security;
Poverty Rate; Urbanization; crimes and Security Threat. After examination of official
documents and secondary data, the paper concludes that population explosion has
continued to undermine the achievement of development’s goals in Nigeria. A
population growing faster than the output of modern goods and services not only
frustrates development goals; it undermines the credibility of promises made
This document summarizes an article that examines the concept of social justice in traditional Igbo society in Nigeria as an alternative model to the current practice of social justice. However, in traditional Igbo society, social justice was integrative, inclusive, and based on shared human values of cooperation and compassion. The article analyzes the basic structures and beliefs of traditional Igbo society that helped maintain social justice, with their worldview defining their knowledge system, values, behaviors and social activities into a cohesive whole. It concludes that adopting aspects of the Igbo model of social justice could provide answers to modern questions around social injustice.
An Appraisal of the Challenges and Legal Protection Available for Internally ...ijtsrd
This paper has investigated the challenges and Legal Protection available for the benefit of Internally Displaced Persons in Nigeria. The study relied on content analysis of extant literature to ascertain the level of challenges and legal protections given to them. The study found that Internally Displaced Persons in Nigeria face a myriad of challenges which include loss of home, loss of traditional livelihood and sources of generating income, break up of families and community support networks, loss of intangible goods, and loss of documentation. A cursory look at the various causes of internal displacement in Nigeria revealed that forced migration and internal displacement in Nigeria in over a decade has been triggered by violent conflict particularly, the deadly activities Boko Haram and the militant Fulani Herdsmen. These displaced persons suffer a lot of human right violations without any significant legal protection for them. Rather, it has been identified that the existing institutional arrangement keepers, although struggling to manage the situation particularly, in the short term, are hindered by current policy deficits and the lack of a specific framework to adequately address the situation or cover medium to longer requirements for the IDPs. It is therefore, imperative to purposively design a legal framework that will specifically address the challenges bedeviling the Internally Displaced Persons in Nigeria while other security measures are being taken to ensure their safety and wellbeing. The document discusses the pull factors that attract young people to join terrorist organizations like the Abu Sayyaf Group in the Philippines, using it as a case study. It argues that there are both ideational and material pull factors. Ideationally, terrorist groups use radical religious ideologies to attract youth and give their lives meaning. Materially, they offer monetary rewards, supplies, and support to families to entice impoverished youth. The Abu Sayyaf Group initially grew due to the charismatic preaching of its founder but later resorted more to kidnapping-for-ransom activities to fund recruitment through financial incentives as ideological fervor waned. Understanding these pull factors is important for counterterrorism policy.
Identity Issues in the Nigerian State and the Problem of Youth Alienation at ...AJHSSR Journal
Nigeria has a population of over 170 million. She is the world‘s sixth largest oil supplier and is
blessed with enormous economic potentials. However, identity issues arising from her multi-ethnic structure
remain a major problem contributing negatively to her socio-economic development. Majority of Nigerians
remain abjectly poor due to bad governance, corruption and related factors. This paper examined the
relationship between identity issues, youth alienation (particularly in the Southeast zone), health/livelihood of
youths, and sustainable development in the Nigerian context. The paper posited that government in Nigeria is
biased in handling identity issues and that democracy has not been able to bring about much anticipated positive
social change. The paper therefore recommended that Nigerian political leaders should, do away with biased
treatment of social groups to the disadvantage of some others. Government should also articulate and
conscientiously pursue democratic ideals that will positively stimulate sustainable development at all levels.

Standardization and Formulations of Calotropis ProceraYogeshIJTSRD
Plants growing in arid regions have elicited increased attention, because the hostile environment, in which these plants survive, forces them to develop chemical protective systems through adaptation which is rarely found in vegetation of other ecosystems. Furthermore, many of the plants grow in areas, where the dependence on traditional, plant based medicines over industrially produced pharmaceuticals persists to this day. The two plants, Calotopris Procera giant milkweed, also named C. Persica and Calotropis gigantea crown ower , have been used widely in traditional medicine in North Africa, the Middle East, and South and South East Asia. This has led to extensive research on the chemical constituents of the plants. Both plants are known to be sources of cardenolides, and newer research has yielded a number of interesting cancer active constituents. In addition, extracts of both plants have remarkable nematocidal, molluscidal and insecticidal activities. In many regions, the wood of Calotropis plants has been used as a building material and as a source of fuel. In addition, certain parts of the plants have been used as feed for livestock. In other regions, Calotropis plants are seen as invasive species that threaten local plant life and that due to their toxicity also pose a threat to grazing eld animals.

This document discusses the development of minority rights from past centuries to the present.
The paper identified the relevance of Malthus theory
on the bourgeoning population explosion on the following key areas: Food Security;
The current modern concept of social justice has failed to adequately address issues like poverty, inequality, and injustice.

Review of the Diagnosis and Treatment of ParalysisYogeshIJTSRD
Paralysis is a complete loss of motor power in any muscle group. When paralysis affects all four extremities, it is called quadriplegia when it affects only the lower extremities, paraplegia and when it affects the extremities on one side of the body, hemiplegic. For this reason, the term paralysis is generally reserved for more focal, less stereotyped weakness, for instance, affecting all the muscles innervated by a peripheral nerve. Many different anatomical lesions and etiologies can cause paralysis and determine its treatment. Bikash Debsingha | Dr. Gourav Kr. Automatic Query Expansion Using Word Embedding Based on Fuzzy Graph Connectiv...YogeshIJTSRD
The aim of information retrieval systems is to retrieve relevant information according to the query provided. The queries are often vague and uncertain. Thus, to improve the system, we propose an Automatic Query Expansion technique, to expand the query by adding new terms to the user s initial query so as to minimize query mismatch and thereby improving retrieval performance. Most of the existing techniques for expanding queries do not take into account the degree of semantic relationship among words. In this paper, the query is expanded by exploring terms which are semantically similar to the initial query terms as well as considering the degree of relationship, that is, “fuzzy membership- between them. The terms which seemed most relevant are used in expanded query and improve the information retrieval process. The experiments conducted on the queries set show that the proposed Automatic query expansion approach gave a higher precision, recall, and F measure then non fuzzy edge weights. A New Proposal for Smartphone Based Drowsiness Detection and Warning System f...YogeshIJTSRD
This paper proposes a Smartphone based system for the detection of drowsiness in automotive drivers. The proposed system uses three stage drowsiness detection technique. The first stage uses the percentage of eyelid closure PERCLOS which is obtained by capturing images with the front camera of the Smartphone with a modified eye state classification method. The system uses near infrared lighting for illuminating the face of the driver during night driving. The second step uses the voiced to the unvoiced ratio VUR obtained from the speech data from the microphone, in the event PERCLOS crosses the threshold. The VUR is also compared with a threshold and if it is a value greater than that of the threshold, it moves on to the next verification stage. In the final verification stage, touch response is required within the stipulated time to declare whether the driver is drowsy or not and subsequently sound an alarm. To awake the driver, a vibrating mechanism is done and also the live GPS location is also sent to an emergency contact. We have studied eight other reference papers for the literature review. The system has three advantages over existing drowsiness detection systems. First, the three stage verification process makes the system more reliable. The second advantage is its implementation on an Android smart phone, which is readily available to most drivers or cab owners as compared to other general purpose embedded platforms. The third advantage is the use of SMS service to inform the control room as well as the passenger regarding the loss of attention of the driver. Data Security by AES Advanced Encryption StandardYogeshIJTSRD
Now a days with the rapid development of multimedia technologies, research on safety and security are becoming more important. Multimedia data are generated and transmitted through the communication channels and the wireless media. The efficiencies of encryption based on different existing algorithms are not up to the satisfactory limit. Hence researchers are trying to modify the existing algorithm or even develop new algorithms that help to increase security with a little encryption time. Here in this paper, we have furnished a new technology to modify the AES algorithm which gives more security with a little encryption time and which can be used to encrypt using 128 bit key. Theoretical analysis on the proposed algorithm with the existing reveals the novelty of our work. Here we have proposed a technique to randomize the key and hidden the key data into an encrypted digital image using the basics concept of cryptography and also using the concept of digital watermarking, the concept of key hide has also been encrypted. We have also proposed a new technique to reposition the pixels to break the correlation between them. So, the proposed scheme offers a more secure and cost effective mechanism for encryption. Next on the AES criteria list good performance. Widespread market adoption will require reasonably good performance on a variety of platforms, ranging from easy tocrack smart cards to the largest servers. Good algorithm performance includes speed for the encryption and decryption process as well as the key schedule. Comparative Studies of Diabetes in Adult Nigerians Lipid Profile and Antioxid...YogeshIJTSRD
The study sought to determine the extent to which the usage of social media in the marketing of agricultural products in South West Nigeria can enhance farmers turnover. It employed the survey research design to collect data with the help of a structured questionnaire to elicit information from respondents selected from six 6 south western states. Research data were analysed using structural equation modelling. The results showed that the use of social media WhatsApp and Facebook in marketing of agricultural products significantly enhances farmers turnover. The managerial implication is that use of Whatsapp and Facebook in the marketing of agricultural products for the enhancement of farmers’ turnover was found to have significant influence on the enhancement in farmers’ turnover from agricultural products. Policy makers in government should provide the enabling environment for the telecommunication companies to enhance their reach by installing their facilities across the length and breadth of the country so that the network coverage will be strong at all times so that the benefits of social media usage will not be constrained. To Assess the Severity and Mortality among Covid 19 Patients after Having Vac...YogeshIJTSRD
The severity and mortality of COVID 19 cases has been associated with the Three category such as vaccination status, severity of disease and outcome. Objective presently study was aimed to assess the severity and mortality among covid 19 patients. Methods Using simple lottery random method 100 samples were selected. From these 100 patients, 50 patients were randomly assigned to case group and 50 patients in control group after informed consents of relative obtained. Patients in the case group who being died after got COVID 19 whereas 50 patients in the control group participated who were survive after got infected from COVID 19 patients. Result It has three categories such as a Vaccination status For the vaccination status we have seen 59 patients were not vaccinated and 41 patients was vaccinated out of 100. b Incidence There were 41 patients were vaccinated whereas 59 patients were not vaccinated. c Severity In the case of mortality we selected 50 patients who were died from the Corona and I got to know that out of 50 patients there were 12 24 patients were vaccinated whereas 38 76 patients were non vaccinated. Although for the 50 control survival group total 29 58 patients were vaccinated and 21 42 patients was not vaccinated all graph start. Conclusion we have find out that those people who got vaccinated were less infected and mortality rate very low. Comparative Analysis of Different Numerical Methods for the Solution of Initi...YogeshIJTSRD
A mathematical equation which involves a function and its derivatives is called a differential equation. We consider a real life situation, from this form a mathematical model, solve that model using some mathematical concepts and take interpretation of solution. It is a well known and popular concept in mathematics because of its massive application in real world problems. Differential equations are one of the most important mathematical tools used in modeling problems in Physics, Biology, Economics, Chemistry, Engineering and medical Sciences. Differential equation can describe many situations viz exponential growth and de cay, the population growth of species, the change in investment return over time. We can solve differential equations using classical as well as numerical methods, In this paper we compare numerical methods of solving initial valued first order ordinary differential equations namely Euler method, Improved Euler method, Runge Kutta method and their accuracy level. We use here Scilab Software to obtain direct solution for these methods. Evaluation of Different Paving Mixes Using Optimum Stabilizing ContentYogeshIJTSRD
Bituminous mixes are most commonly used all over the world in flexible pavement construction. It consists of asphalt or bitumen used as a binder and mineral aggregate which are mixed together, laid down in layers and then compacted. Under normal circumstances, conventional bituminous pavements if designed and executed properly perform quite satisfactorily but the performance of bituminous mixes is very poor under various situations. Today’s asphaltic concrete pavements are expected to perform better as they are experiencing increased volume of traffic, increased loads and increased variations in daily or seasonal temperature over what has been experienced in the past. In addition, the performance of bituminous pavements is found to be very poor in moisture induced situations. Considering this a lot of work has been done on use of additives in bituminous mixtures and as well as on modification of bitumen. Research has indicated that the addition of polymers to asphalt binders helps to increase the interfacial cohesiveness of the bond between the aggregate and the binder which can enhance many properties of the asphalt pavements to help meet these increased demands. However, the additive that is to be used for modification of mix or binder should satisfy both the strength requirements as well as economical aspects. How to Manage Reception Report in Odoo 17Celine George
A business may deal with both sales and purchases occasionally. They buy things from vendors and then sell them to their customers. Such dealings can be confusing at times. Because multiple clients may inquire about the same product at the same time, after purchasing those products, customers must be assigned to them. Odoo has a tool called Reception Report that can be used to complete this assignment. By enabling this, a reception report comes automatically after confirming a receipt, from which we can assign products to orders.

legitimate means to attain such goals, in turn put pressure
(strain) on the individual to commit crimes.
The word “anomie” has a French origin and connotes
normlessness or the absence of law. Robert Merton’s(1938)
anomie-strain theory is conceptualized as the study’s
theoretical premise. This theory appears apt to capture the
threat to security and criminal act involved in the money
ritual activities by youth in contemporary Nigeria. Emile
Durkheim (1893) conceptualized the term to mean the
absence, weakening, and violation of norms (laws) and the
core-values regulating human action in society. Anomie-
strain theory ofEmileDurkheimwasborrowedandmodified
by Robert Merton for a means-end paradigm in 1938.
The theory highlighted a number of ways in which an
individual may adapt to the strains brought by the inability
to achieve the socially prescribed success-goals. The
adaptation are conformity, in which goals are accepted and
pursued along with/the legitimate cultural means;
innovation in which goals are pursued but legitimate means
is eliminated, and illegitimate means is created and used.
Ritualism whereby institutional goals are rejected and the
cultural means ritualized as an end in itself, as in religious
fanaticism; retreatism in whichgoalsandmeansarerejected
and the individual withdraws into isolationism. The last
adaptation mechanisms identified by Merton is rebellion in
which both the society is institutional goals and approved
cultural means are rejected anda newstructureisadvocated
and pursued by the group (Haralambos and Holborn, 2008).
The “Innovation” which explains a situation whereby the
individual accepts the culturally defined goal of the society
but rejects the legitimate means to attain such goal. In
Nigeria, youths who could not attain the cultural goal of
attaining success/gettingmoneyoftenresorttoillegal means
to achieve it. Viewed from this perspective, it could be seen
that the socio-economy factors such as poverty,
unemployment, inequality, eroding cultural values and
norms put pressure on young people to resort to the
illegitimate means of pursuing and achieving, ultimately, the
socially approved goal of attaining success/get rich in life.
CONCEPTUAL CLARIFICATION-MONEY RITUAL
“Ritual” as a religious term implies a ceremony that entails
communication with some external forces. It includes a
belief/ beliefs and it is done with seriousness and solemnity.
Rituals belong to the realm of thesacred, involvingsacrifices,
essentially (Adisa 2005). Adisa, (2005) identifies sacredand
the non-sacred as the typologyofrituals.Thesacredcouldbe
negative or it could be positive. Rituals involve sacrifices for
life crisis, death rites and customs and rituals of initiations.
Non-sacred rituals involves the imitative typessignifying re-
enactment. Under the sacred types signifying re-enactment.
Under the sacred type of rituals, the positiveonesarealways
concerned with consecrating or renewing a religious object.
Ritual is a set patterns or prescribed procedures and orders
for carrying out religious classified (Shiyaa, 2009).
Another ritual classified as “sacred” is the sacrificial ritual
described by the French sociologist Henry Hubert and
Mercel Maus (Adisa, 2005). The two attempt to distinguish
between sacrifices and rituals of oblation, offering and
consecration. In their observation, the distinct feature of
sacrifice ritual is the destruction of the sacrificial victim
which may be animal, human or plant, either partially or
totally (through burning, dismembering or eating).
According to Emily et al.(2009) a ritual must fit into four
categories. These four categories are: a repetitive social
practice, different from the routines of day-to-day life,
follows some sort of ritual scheme and encoded in myth.
Ritual often have its roots in myth and religion, tyingitselfto
ancient practices between the divine and humans. However,
a ritual does not have to be religions in nature.
Money ritual is a ritual done to bring about money or to
change a person’s situation or circumstance where in which
they will be more wealthy and prosperous. The idea that a
human being or other living things could be sacrificed to
procure wealth may not be proved empirically, but the fact
remains that the phenomenon is real, it is magic. Magic is a
ritual performance or activity believed to influence human
or natural events through access to an external mystical
force beyond the ordinary human sphere (Encyclopedia
Britannica (6) 1974). According to Opoku (1978), magic has
two underlying principle; homeopathyandcontiguity.While
homeopathically speaking, ‘like produces like or that an
effect resembles its cause; contagious magic on the other
hand operates on the principle that things which have once
been in contact with each other will continue to interact
even when the contact is broken. Opoku (1978)andAwolalu
(1979), observed that contagious magic are exoteric energy
which a man (in his limitations) who hasesotericknowledge
may tap to, so that his will may be served.
Background to Ritual Sacrifice in Nigeria
The origin of ritual sacrifice in Nigeria and other part of
Africa can be traced to the pre-colonial era. Pre-colonial
African societies have offered ritual sacrifice to their deities,
and for some, this occasionally include human sacrifice. The
type of victim for ritual sacrifice defers from one case to
another, depending on the purpose of the sacrifice and the
society. Also, selection of victims for ritual sacrifice varies
from one society to another. In some societies, violator of
curfew declared for ritual order becomes the victim forsuch
ritual. This is the more reason why strangers mostly fall
victim of ritual sacrifice, since they are not aware of such
curfew declared for the ritual order. In this case, guards that
enforce such ritual order will capture the victim.
Also, in some communities, the killing of slave was another
form of ritual sacrifice. Ayegboyin (2009) observed that
human sacrifice is the highest and the most expensive ritual
sacrifice that the community resorted to mostly in terms of
national disaster, to propitiate certain divinities and purify
the community. Adefila andOpeola (1998),observedthatthe
Yoruba of south-western Nigeria, have a ritual traditionthat
included using human (mostly slaves) for sacrifice before
any military expeditions during the Yoruba interstate war
between 11th and 19th centuries. According to Ayegboyin
(2009), using human beings for ritual was not out of lack of
respect for sanctify of human life but a personal philosophy
of life that it is better to sacrifice individual life for the good
of the community than for the community to perish.
However, there has never been a general acceptance of
human sacrifice in Africa and there are some situations
where this kind of ritual has been offered to the deities in a
defiled form of African religion (Ashanti 2009).
The practice of human sacrifice, juju, magical powers,
witchcraft and ordeals were outlawed across the Africa
continent under colonialism (Browne, 1935). These
practices have been criminalized in the Nigerian penal code
since 1916 as a measure to assist the colonial masters

established a favorable political, economic and social order
in Africa (Ekeh, 1975). However, as the desire for special
protection and wealth sustenance grew among those in
business and other economic elites, as well as among some
of the masses who aspired for improvement in theirfortune,
private ritual developed at the expense of communal ritual.
Ritual activities especially money ritual have become
sophisticated in Nigeria in modern times as it has expanded
beyond killing people or severing human parts for money
ritual to the dangerous stage of using female underwear for
money ritual. Age bracket no longer exist for the victims as
organized groups most especially among the youth and
strategies in stealing, buying and selling of female
underwear have emerged to support ritualist activities. This
development is reinforced with the proliferation of private
ritualist consultants and practitionerswiththeknowledgeof
using humans or human body part for money ritual.
MOTIVATION FOR MONEY RITUAL IN NIGERIA
Money rituals flourish in Nigeria amid widespread poverty.
The high level of poverty in Nigeria most especially among
the young people are among the pre-disposing factors
pushing young people to engage inmoney ritual asanescape
route from poverty. Recently, the National Bureau of
statistics (NBS, 2005) reported on Nigeria is poverty-index
that about 61.2% of Nigerians were living on less than
1dollar a day at the end of 2013. This statistics suggests that
the majority of Nigerians live in poverty, and, as a result,
they could barely afford the necessities of life such as food,
shelter, and clothing (Agara and Pojwan, 2013). With such
large percentage of Nigerians living in poverty, moneyritual
has become an escape route for young people from the trap
of poverty.
Power is another major benefit that many believe could be
gained through ritual moneyandsacrificethatentailshuman
blood or body parts. Some people believe that money ritual
can make them have money and powerful and transport
them into powerful positions (Vanguard,2014).Hence,ritual
is one of the means to attain and maintain a position of
power in many African nations (Nwolize2013;Smith,2001).
There are indications that many people are also undergoing
money rituals for favour, connection, wealth and protection
(Igwe, 2004; Nwolize 2013; Smith, 2001). Many people
believe that engaging in money ritual is an avenue to be
connected and wealthy. The urged for quick money, fame
and protection are motivation for people especially young
people to engage in money ritual.
Another motivation for money ritual in Nigeria is to serve as
last resort. Some people are employed, but what they earn
cannot possibly cover their cost of living. Hence, they
desperately involve in money ritual as a mean of last resort.
Similarly, corruption and eroding values are also a strong
motivation for money ritual in Nigeria.CorruptioninNigeria
has eaten deep the fabric of our nation and it has reached a
dangerous dimension. Money appropriated for critical
infrastructural facilities are being diverted and use for
private purposes. Today, politics has been turned to the
biggest money making machine in Nigeria. Apart from the
fact that young people look up to these corrupt politicians to
survive, the quest to get rich and be like them (politicians),
coupled with the eroding values of hard work and dignity of
labour have pushed many people into indulging in all
manners of activities just to be famous, protected and
wealthy, including engaging in money ritual.
CLASSIFICATION OF MONEY RITUALS IN NIGERIA
Money rituals in Nigeria can be classified into five broad
categories:
1. The first category involves human sacrifice. This could
mean anything, from using a human skull of a person
who has been long dead to actually killing someone and
using their body parts for a ritual.
2. The second category revolves around smaller animal
sacrifices. It is often called “Osole” among the Yoruba
speaking people ofsouthwestern,Nigeria.Itrequiresthe
use of animals, animal parts, and plants in order to
work.
3. The third category includes all sorts of charms that
could bring wealth upon the one who performs them. It
mostly involves chanting certain incantation or
“charging up” coins to return upon spending. The
Yoruba called this category of money ritual as “Agbana”.
4. The fourth category involves eating human faeces. This
is a new dimension to money ritual among youth in
Nigeria. The faeces can be that of the personinvolvingin
the ritual or any other person. It is believe that the more
faeces the person eats the more richer he/she becomes.
5. The fifth and final category involves using female
underwear for money ritual. In recent time, there have
been upsurged in the selling, buyingandstealing evenat
gun point female under wears for money ritual in
Nigeria. Some people believe that an under wears of a
female undergoing her menstral cycle could be used for
money ritual.
MONEY RITUAL AND NATIONAL SECURITY
The increasing level of insecurity in Nigeria occasioned by
the activities of different groups especially the growing
threat of ritual killings. Killing for ritual for whatsoever
reasons is unique and there are widespread fear of its threat
in Nigeria, where there is neither definite hotspot of
operation and targeted victims, nor a profile of the
perpetrators and the survival of the victims are least
curtained. Ritual killing has become a major source of fear
for many Nigerians because of the fate that mostly befall the
victims. Gbinije (2014), observed that most victims of ritual
killings can turn mad, die, become poor, deformed or a
walking corpse. Fear of the threat of ritual killings have
continued to undermine National Security,astheyhavebeen
a growing resort to self-help among citizens in Nigeria. At
the community level, there is a growing vigilance and active
responses of people against ritualists. In this way, many
suspects have been apprehended and handed over to the
police or met with jungle justice- the latter, which is another
emerging source of concerninNigeria.Dailytimenewspaper
(2014) and Waheed (2014), reported that at least two mad
persons were killed and eleven other injured in late March,
2014 in Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria, following the news that a
mad man was found with four human tongues. Seven
suspected ritualist were also set ablaze in Naka, Gwer West
municipal in Benue state in February, 2015 (Ajijah, 2015).
This and other occasions have shown that killing for ritual
has become a visible threat to national security in Nigeria,
and making people to lose confidence in state security, due
process of the law and taken law into their own hands.
Ritual killing in Nigeria hasno age bracket, secluded sex,
status or geo-political limits in target selection of victims by

perpetrators. No one is too young or old, rich or poor, far or
near for ritual motivated killings. According to the Sun
Newspaper (2013), about 90% of recent cases of missing
person were not found and the bodies of a little number that
were eventually discovered were dumped either on the
roadsides, bush path or uncompleted buildings, mutilated
and their vital organs removed.
The government of Nigeria at both the federal level and in
some states have responded to this threat with legal
criminalization of killing for rituals and general policing.
Series of arrests and trial of suspected ritualists have been
recorded. Nevertheless, the threat of killings for ritual
remain undeterred in Nigeria and has not gained enough
attention; thereby creating a conditionof widespreadfeeling
of danger, harm and horror which are a potential threat to
nationalsecurity.

RECOMMENDATIONS
The prevalence of poverty in Nigeria has been identified as
the driving force for many people to engaging in crime and
criminal activities including money ritual. To address the
upsurge of money ritual among youths in Nigeria, sincere
policy should be designed by government to eradicate
poverty with political will and commitment. Money ritual
and other ritual killings will become less appealing when
there is a conscientious effort to poverty eradication.
Government should embark on aggressive jobopportunities
for the ever growing number of graduating jobless youth.
Many scholars, policy makers, political and social analysts
have suggested that Nigeria as a country is sitting on a gun
powder that could be exploded at any time, due to the high
percentage of able young people without jobs. To make
money ritual less appealing to these jobless youth,
government must create employment opportunities and
human security.
Also, there should be democratization and transparency in
the public space so as to ensure that government is return to
the people and the notion of winner takes all is removed
from our politics. This will make ritual killing less appealing
among those that want to serve the people.
Furthermore, Government and Non-government
organizations (NGOs) should embark on publicsensitization
on the reward for honesty and hardwork amongyouths. The
ethic of hard work should be promoted asagainstunmerited
fame, favor, power and wealth sourced from rituals.
Finally, Government mustreviewitssecurityarchitects,fund
police force and other security agencies saddled with
internal protection of lives and properties and ensure
regular patrol and surveillance of identified dark spot for
criminal activities. Improvement in humansecurity will help
reduce the appeal of ritual protection in Nigeria.
CONCLUSION
Money ritual has emerged as an important security threat in
Nigeria. This criminal act has proved difficult to prevent
through policing, given the little or no knowledge of the
hotspot, theprospectiveperpetratorsandthevictims.Money
ritual is magical in nature, whereesotericforcestappedfrom
the nature are used by the initiate to send the soul of the
sacrificial victim to supra-physical realm, whereinitlabor to
bring wealth to the ritualist. Although, usinghumanparts for
moneymaking may not be proved empirically, it is a
phenomenon that is real and it is a day-to-day concern for
the people. This informs the conflicting conceptions of
security in Nigeria. Money ritual is because of lack of job
opportunities for young people, prevalence of poverty,
widening gap of inequality, eroding cultural values of
honesty and hardwork, insecurity etc. In order to reduce
upsurge of money ritual among youth in Nigeria,
government should provide employment opportunistic for
jobless youth, address widening gap of inequality, reward
core value of honesty and hard work and review its security
architects.
