Plato, An Ancient Greek Philosopher
Plato, an Ancient Greek Philosopher by Carly Rittenmeyer
Bible and the Ancient World
Spring 2015
Plato, a Greek Philosopher, is known for his writings that impacted people in the Ancient Greek
society. He was a free thinker and lived in a free city, Athens. He was taught by multiple teachers
including Socrates who was frequently mentioned in his writings as the central character. Plato s
novel, The Republic, influenced the idea of government and shows his views on the world.
Throughout his personal life, writings, and dialogues, Plato shows his value of knowledge and
how each of his writings impacted the morals of people in the society. Plato was born in 427 BCE
in Athens which is one of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He was a close family friend and the teacher of Plato. He looked up to many philosophers as role
models which reflected on his knowledge and education. Socrates taught many students and was
able to pass down his knowledge on philosophy. Socrates told his students that the the
unquestioned life is not worth living (Stockdale 1). He is saying that if a person does not
question their life and is able to just live without questioning the society, then life is not worth
living. This influenced Plato to question society and state his opinions through his writings.
Socrates was mentioned in many of Plato s dialogues as the central character. Socrates was
convicted of treason by the Athenians and sentenced to death. His death was based on his attitude
and teachings. His death turned Plato away from democracy which then led to him on a path of
philosophy. Plato s philosophy forever changed Western ethical and political thought. Through his
philosophy, he was able to impact the morals of the people in the society. After the death of
Socrates, Plato was able to travel for about twelve years and journeyed Italy and Sicily to study
with other philosophers. When he was traveling, he learned Pythagorean mathematics and he was
able to be apart of the military again. When he returned to Athens, Plato founded a school titled The
Academy in about 387. This school was

Abstract: Friction stir welding (FSW) process is a new solid state joining technique that is widely
adopted in manufacturing and many fields for joining different metallic alloys which are difficult
to weld by using conventional type such as fusion welding for metals which has lower melting
point. The aluminium alloys are considered because they have successfully contributed in meeting
the rising demand for lightweight structures .The major parameters considered for Friction Stir
Welding process for dissimilar aluminium alloys are tool Rotational Speed, Traverse speed of tool,
Axial load, Tool tilt and plunge depth. This paper provides the overview of change in
microstructural and mechanical properties of dissimilar aluminium alloys based on considering
various welding parameters.

Report On Tesco s Impairment
Question 11 Report on Tesco s Impairments Executive Summary Tesco reported a write down of
ВЈ7bn in one off charges in the 2014 financial results, which is the first set of the whole year
financial results by the new chief executive Dave Lewis and this practice is called kitchen sinking.
This report gives explanation of its definition, the reason why Tesco adopted this approach and
how it tested impairment under the accounting standard (IAS). Introduction Tesco is one of the
biggest retailer in UK which provides food and non food products. However, a ВЈ4.7 billion
property impairment results to a loss of ВЈ6.4 billion. Tesco reported a massive property write down
of ВЈ7bn in the 2014 financial results of one off items, which contains restructuring costs,
goodwill, impairments and resolution of the commercial income recognition scandal in
September 2014 (John Stokdyk 2015). This is the first set of whole year financial results by the
new chief executive Dave Lewis and it gives the corporate and its investors a kitchen sinking. The
practice, kitchen sinking, is a term used when a recently nominated chief executive announce all
the bad news at once that found in the company and report it in an early financial results
announcement to make any succeeding results look more impressive. The reason is to keep the
company away from negative accounting issues and to assure investors realise who is to blame.
Main Findings The Tesco s accounting team under Dave Lewis put every write off,

Case Study Of Toms Friends
The problems that Toms Friends will can met are numerous. Indeed, the first problem of Toms
Friends is the time of shoes reception for the disadvantaged children is too long (between 4 or 6
months from the initial date of purchase). I would recommend to the company to answer at this
problem by having a better management in its logistics but also its transport to reduce the delivery
deadlines. A good flow management and an anticipation of sales would allow Toms Friends to be
efficient and operational. The company, if it has the financial possibility, can also open a factory
in every disadvantages country where it offers its shoes. It can be create new job for many people
of those countries but also improve the delivery deadlines for children.
The second problem of Toms... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Today, Tom Friends helps more than 24 poor countries what makes its incur the risk of not helping
any more suitably the majority of Argentines to the detriment of the other countries. If Tom Friends
main motivation was to improve the life of Argentines, it should refocused on this objective what
would allow it to help more children and to give them more quickly their shoe. But it is respectable
to want to help numerous countries needy as it makes today.
Many criticisms are emitted against Toms Friends and it can affect their sales and image in the
customer s eyes. Many people criticize that the manufacturing is located in china but it create new
job in disadvantage country also. Tom Friends should make more communication on its products,
their origin or the cause, which it defends. There is various ways to face the critic: first of all by
limiting the criticism or by keeping silence for example. But I think the better idea is to
communicate positively on its products and causes which it defends. Toms can plan a
communication budget to solve this

An Ongoing Adolescence
Translated to its literal meaning pulling in or withdrawal (Grisafe 2012), hikikomori is a Japanese
phenomenon that has been a prominent social issue for years. First coming to light in1998,
Japanese physiatrist, Tamaki Saito introduced the mental health issue in his book Hikikomori: An
ongoing adolescence (Senju 2013). Today, the issue is increasingly worrying for not only Japan,
but other international countries as young to middle aged men and women continue to drive
towards the trend of complete reclusive behavior and acute social withdrawal. As of today, over
one million people in Japan are hikikomori.
A person who is defined as a hikikomori is one who withdraws from society for more than 6
months, usually hiding in their bedroom ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Due to their parent s high expectations to succeed in school, many victims may choose to isolate
themselves as failure in school and a lack of social support can keep the hikikomori locked away
for years. In Japan there is extreme pressure to get into a good university and get a well paid job.
For some, failing to do so results in people shutting themselves in.
A large aspect of Japan s enormous pressure on students comes from the entrance exams that
students are required to take to get into specific junior high schools, high schools and universities.
Failure to gain entry is a leading factor in becoming a hikikomori. The work required to do well in
the infamously difficult entrance exams consists of extended hours of study and cramming schools,
otherwise known as gakushЕ« juku(е¦зї’еЎѕ)or juku (еЎѕ) for short (Suzuki 2013). These fast
paced, late night schools leave students with minimal hours of sleep and social time and extended
period of study and cramming. Approximately 60% of all Japanese high school students attend juku
(Cram Schools n.d.). Gogatsu byЕЌ (May Disease, дє”жњ€
з—…) is another school related motive
of the hikikomori. It is when one doesn t know how to cope with a change in their school or work
environment, which results in overwhelming stress. It is closely related with depression.

Advantages Of Oral Chemotherapy
Traditionally, the delivery of most cancer chemotherapies has made use of the intravenous route,
except for a limited number of medications, which were administered orally. However, in recent
years, advances in medical and medicinal biotechnology have produced a surge in the number of
targeted oral chemotherapymedications [1, 2, 3]; these are believed to be safer and less costly.
Oral chemotherapy is also more convenient for patients, families and caregivers because patients
can self administer their medications in the comfort of their own homes with little or no supervision
by relatives or healthcare professionals. Some patients also maintain that self administration gives
them a sense of control over their therapy. [3, 4, 5, 6]
Studies show that patients with metastatic colorectal cancer clearly prefer oral to intravenous therapy
[7, 8], primarily due to convenience, toxicity considerations [7], problems with intravenous lines,
and a better environment for administration. [5] ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This confronts clinicians and families alike a new challenge: to ensure patient adherence to
medication instructions. [9, 10] Adherence is defined as the extent to which a person s behaviour
taking medication, following a diet, and/or executing life style changes, corresponds with agreed
recommendations from a health care provider . [11] Patient adherence to the treatment regimen is
paramount for the achievement of the intended therapeutic outcomes. Conversely, non adherence
might increase the potential for medication errors, drug interactions, and additional physician
visits; it may also compromise clinical outcomes. [4, 11, 12, 13, 14] A study by McCowan et al,
associates poor adherence with a shorter time to recurrence and a reduction in quality of life

Raw by Scott Monk, Hard Rock by Etheridge Knight, and Dangerous Minds by John N. Smith
Institutions can have positive and negative effects that can alter an individual s perceptions,
judgment and values. Raw by Scott Monk, Hard Rock by Etheridge Knight and Dangerous Minds
by John N. Smith help communicate an understanding of how such institutions can reform an
individual.
The novel Raw written by Scott Monk, is simple in style but introduces interesting and an
acceptable insight to the concept of the institution and the individual experience . Brett Dalton
resembles a highly wrought, reactionary character who challenged or feels confronted by structures
of authority or control.
Using Brett as the protagonist, Monk opens ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He implies that the power to change lives within the individual. Further on in the novel, Brett is
still of concern and Sam reaches out to try and help. Don t shut me out, Brett. I do know the score
and that is why I m worried about you . This indicates the positive effect of the institution and on
the individual.
Josh is another character who helps Brett reform. Josh is seen as the rehabilitated teenager who
chooses to stay on the farm. He helps Brett realize that his problems are the least of his worries
when compared with other troubled teenagers, for example Josh himself. His problems are quite
indescribable, he has no parents that desire to care for him, whilst Brett does, and this changes Brett
s perspective towards Josh and his life. Monk deliberately outlines the change in Brett through Josh
to demonstrate the changing experience and positive effect of the institution on Brett.
Scott Monk employs many techniques to convey his ideas of the positive changes Brett incurred
from an institution. One of many is the use of contrast, which juxtaposes Brett s life at the
beginning and his reformed life at the end. Monk highlights this contrast through the prologue and
epilogue. In the prologue, Brett hates anyone who has the authority he thinks the whole world is
against him, whilst in the epilogue Brett had learnt to make friendships, gain trust and respect and
learn to accept his own mistakes and responsibilities.

The Theory Of Supply And Demand
When an individual wants a good or service they will go wherever they need to get that good or
service that they want. You never really think how it gets there or why there isn t any left. When
you go to the store to buy groceries and the price has went up you tend to get upset. Although,
when they go down you think to yourself that you better stock up. All of these changes occur
because of demand and supply. Demand and supply are the key components for the economy.
Kirzner (2000) states in his article: The theory of supply and demandis recognized almost
universally as the first step toward understanding how market prices are determined and the way in
which these prices help shape production and consumption decisions the decisions that make up not
shapes the prices for production and consumption of goods and services.
Demand
According to Moffatt Demand is the relationship between the quantity of a good or service
consumers will purchase and the price charged for that good . It is the want or need for a good
or service to be produced. The amount of a good at a certain price that an individual is willing to
buy is called quantity demand. Prices fluctuate for many reasons. When a price of a good or
service goes up or down it is called law of demand. If the price rises, the quantity demanded goes
down. If the price goes down, the quantity demanded goes up. This being that everything else is
equal. Also known as ceterius paribus. The two have an inverse effect on

The Theme Of Identity In The Cellist Of Sarajevo
If you could revisit any moment in your life and change the decision you made, would your
identity be any different? Could your identity, the values and beliefs you hold, be altered or
erased by one drastic event? One novel, which explores the development one s identity is Steven
Galloway s The Cellist of Sarajevo. Galloway clearly explores identity through the three main
characters of the novel; Alisa, Kenan, and Dragan, conveying a clear lesson about hope through the
experiences of the three characters. Though the conflicts from the siegecause them all to deviate
from their personalities before the siege, they eventually all revert to their original personalities,
regaining their identities.
In the novel during the Siege of Sarajevo, Alisa ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The answer is a resounding no. The choices people make over the span of their life, the values,
morals, and beliefs they hold shape their identity. Though an event like the siege may
temporarily disrupt an individual, causing them to stray from their path and for a period of
time, make decisions they would not usually make, there will always be hope. Despite the
conflicts that the siege brings, the characters all maintain a shred of hope and with it a shred
their personality before the siege, and after they fully regain hope, symbolized by the music of
the Cellist, they all revert back to the people they once were. The deviations in behavior, beliefs,
and values all occur due to the initial shock of the siege, however even such a tragedy is not
enough to uproot Alisa, Kenan, and Dragan s identities. When one strays from their path,
whether it be from fear, anger, or anguish, they will always be hope in the back of their mind.
People will always adapt, at some point they will come to terms with reality, and their quietly
whispering hope will scream. Eventually, like the main characters in the novel, people will regain
hope and with it their identity. Conflicts which lack a persona; the nameless and faceless men on
the hills, do not have the ability to rob or destroy anyone s

Beauvoir Second Sex Analysis
The Second Sex is one of the earliest attempts to confront human history from a feminist
perspective. It won de Beauvoir many admirers and just as many detractors. Today, many regard
this massive and meticulously researched masterwork as not only as pillar of feminist thought but
of twentieth century philosophy in general. It remains to this day one of the foundational texts in
philosophy, feminism, and women s studies. De Beauvoir s primary thesis is that men
fundamentally oppress women by characterizing them, on every level, as the Other, defined
exclusively in opposition to men. Man occupies the role of the self, or subject; woman is the object,
the other. He is essential, absolute, and transcendent. She is inessential, incomplete, and mutilated.

What Is Jane s Coming Of Age
In Jane Eyre, we see Jane grow up, essentially, by learning the hardship by criticisms of society
through experiences. Jane s coming of age is internalized, meaning her factors of growing up
weren t something as extreme as in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man but domestic. Since
Jane Eyre was written in first person, the reader gets to look at Jane s thought process when
making decisions. Compared to Stephen, in A Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man is heavily
influenced by religion as an external factor since he went to a boarding school. As a result, Stephen
can be seen as a byproduct of rigorous religious teaching. Even though their stories might be
different, both books show the characters growing up through their narration and characterization....

Within the narration, there was imagery that the author was conveying through the protagonist s
dialogue which both books did. In Jane Eyre it was her paintings which described her progression
throughout the book so the reader can pinpoint what stage of the coming of age process the
protagonist is in. For A Portrait of the Artist as Young Man, the reader doesn t know the age of
Stephen throughout the book so the reader can use clues from his narration to attach description
of his surroundings to an age. An example is Moocow (Joyce 2) and Pick, pack, pock, puck
(Joyce 27) which shows the sensory description which children usually do. Both characters are
also characterized similarly by having parallel stories relating to family for example both growing
up poor, attending boarding schools they hated and eventually leaving, and family problems such as
Jane s aunt being cruel and Stephen s father being alcoholic. Stephens and Jane s internal
development is visible through their advancement mainly climbing the social class, evident from an
early age of their family struggles. Through the first person narration in Jane Eyre, the reader can
characterize Jane through her perspective but also what others say to her. For example, in the
beginning,

Aliesha Seamons Mrs.Miller English 12A 15 September, 2016 On March 1, 1872, President
Ulysses S. Grant signed a law making Yellowstone National Park out of 3,468 square miles of
land in Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. The people of the United States wanted to preserve the
land to let future generations see the shooting geysers, bubbling hot pots, forests full of
towering lodgepole pines, sparkling lakes, and magnificent views of the stars at night. Of
course, the land supported unique animals such as bison, bald eagles, elk, grizzly bears, and
wolves. However within the first 50 years of being open, the wolves were hunted to
extinction. They were gone from the park for over 70 years. At that time, scientists and forest
rangers realized that the absence of wolves causing problems in the ecosystem; the elk population
had grown out of control. Therefore, in 1995 the Fish and Game Department reintroduced wolves,
which has benefited the Yellowstone ecosystem in many ways. However, the farmer and ranchers
feel negatively about the reintroduction, feeling that wolves do nothing other than wreak havoc
on livestock and pose a dangerous threat to those visiting the park. The wolves appear as a threat
to the ecosystem of Yellowstone National Park, however they play a vital role and keep the
ecosystem balance. Today s culture encourages children to be scared of wolves. Many of the

Dow s Expansion into Nuclear Weapons and the Aftermath
Rocky Flats Plant, a nuclear weapons production facility managed by Dow from 1951 to 1975,
produced plutonium triggers for hydrogen bombs. A number of accidents took place under Dow s
management during this period. In 1957, radioactive particles were released into the atmosphere
due to the burning of plutonium dust by a fire in the facility. In 1967, 3,500 barrels (560 m3) of
lubricants and solvents, laden with plutonium, leaked into the ground. Another fire took place in

Howl By Ginsberg Analysis
Have you ever read a poem or book and did not like it or could not understand it? I have, and the

talks of everything he hates and uses the term Moloch to describe it. Part three he talks to Carl

and sexuality leaves the readers wondering what the heck is going on and what is he really trying

Teach For America
Teach For America
Since Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005, 4,500 public school teachers were fired in
the city. The storm is the cause of this city s struggling public school system. Also, the public
school population has dropped dramatically. In 2010, studies found 4,000 teens, which is about 10
percent of the city s student population not even enrolled in school (Vanacore 1). The city has fired
7,500 unionized teachers and other school employees, predominately African
American women (Shaw 1). The storm played a huge role in the loss of so many teachers, which
lead to Teach for America. Teach For America, is a nonprofit organization whose stated mission is

To a casual observer, Teach for America s narrative is compelling: an...teach

Functions Of Human Sensory Biology
Sensory Biology Lab 6
Name: Dominic Siaw
Biology 132
T.A: Marian Wahl
Date Performed: 4/7/15
Date due: 4/14/1
Abstract
In this laboratory students will perform various experiments to demonstrate various properties of
human sensory biology. Students worked in pairs and performed 5 experiments. These experiments
were based on touch receptors, temperature receptors, two point discrimination on the skin, locating
distance from the fovea to our blind spot and measuring visual activity. T test was performed and
the results explained that there is no significant difference in how the body adapts to external
stimuli.
Introduction
Sensory Biology is being able to perceive stimuli from the environment. The most common ... Show

Examples include eyes, nose and skin. The eyes are the main sensory organs being tested in this
experiment. Eyes allow us to detect visible light which is reflected on images and allows us to see
them. (McMillan 35)
In this laboratory, an experiment will be conducted to explore the human senses. Most importantly
the senses of touch. Various parts of the body will be tested to see how the body adapts to external
simuli. These external stimui will be a coin touch, temperature and a touch from a two point
discrimination. Also the ability to read from afar will be tested using the Snellen examination chart.
Experimental Procedure
The first experiment was an exercise based on adaptations of touch receptors. One student
obtained a coin and a stop watch. The other student was the test subject. The test subject placed his
/her palm down on the desk. The test subject closed their eyes and a coin was placed on the back
of the test subject s hand (lower side of right most knuckle) and the stop watch was started. The
clock was stopped when the test subject stopped feeling the coin. The time was recorded. The
same procedure was repeated but during these times the coin was placed at 4 different locations
of the hand. The time for each adaptation was recorded. This test was performed twice for each
location and time for each adaptation was recorded. The T test was then calculated to see if there is

Human Trafficking And Human Sex Trafficking
Images of foreign lands usually conjure up when the thoughts of human sex trafficking come to one
s mind. The United States of America is not immune to this type of horrific behavior. America is
the land of the free and yet something as awful as human sex trafficking occurs in our very own
backyard each and everyday. According to the Department of Homeland Security the definition of
human traffickingis modern day slaverythat involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to obtain
some type of labor or commercial sex act ( What Is Human Trafficking? ). In this research paper

Sex acts include; prostitution and forced or coerced sex for monetary value like human sex
trafficking. The second population group is adults, age 18 or over, induced into commercial sex
through force, fraud, or coercion. And lastly, the third population group is children and adults
induced to perform labor or services through force, fraud, or coercion. When it comes to the
background of sex trafficking victims there is no one certain type of victim. These victims come in
all shapes and sizes and come from diverse communities all across this country. All victims have
different socioeconomic backgrounds, varied levels of education and could also possibly be
documented or undocumented citizens. According to Equalitynow.org, when it comes to different
genders that are trapped into the world of sex trafficking ninety eight percent of victims are women
and young girls. Equalitynow.org says the commercial sex industry preys on women and girls who
are particularly vulnerable. Most have experienced significant trauma and many are still children
when they enter prostitution ( What Is... Equality Now). Homeless youth and runaways are the
most vulnerable victims to be involved with sex trafficking. The National Human Trafficking

Drug Use By Athletes
In 1998, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, two professional baseball players of the major
baseball league were put up to the test to see who could break Roger Maris s home run record of

second with 66. However, later in 2010 McGwire admitted that he used androstenedione which is an
over the counter muscle enhancement product, when he broke the home runrecord. At the time, the
use of that drug had been banned by the National Football League, the International Olympic
Committee, and the World Anti Doping Agency, but not by Major League Baseball

This will also encourage players to not use steroids or any other drug in general in order to keep
up with other players. When taking drugs it is always risky because of the fact that the consumer
will most likely consume more than the prescribed amount. The use of drugs gives an dishonest
turn to the game which later doesn t have any point to it because of the fact that the drug consumer
is not playing with their own talent, but with the effects that the drug is giving them. Drug testing
athletes would not only show true talent, but also prevent health risks occurring to any of the
players. With athletes not being tested, we will never know who is at risk. Drug testing should not
be seen as getting caught it should be seen as a learning experience. Drug consumers can be
educated on the risks that drugs have not only their health but their performance out on the field as
well. Athletes on drugs are athletes who run the risk of getting seriously hurt, or hurting others.
Also, participation in such sports is voluntary. Anyone who wishes not to be drug tested would have
the option of not participating in them. The benefits of athletes getting drug tested are obvious: It
would make a decrease in drug use among public schools. Doctors and parents will become more
cautious about drug use among their athletes. Parents could then give their child the support they

Analysis Of The Poem Dead Man s Dump And Dolce Et...
Issac Rosenberg s Dead Man s Dump and Wilfred Owen s Dolce et Decorum Est both deal with
the problem of watching one s fellow soldiers die in combat. A common and major theme in both
works is the representation of death at war in the two poems. Despite this commonality, while there
are similarities, there are also differences in the poems representations of deathon the battlefield.
The difference in the poems representations of death on the battlefield can be seen in the contrast in
their respective tone, usage of imagery, and form alongside the subject matter. In Rosenberg s, Dead
Mans Dump , the poem describes a battlefield and the aftermath of combat. The poem title itself
reflects how the poet, himself, feels regarding war and its different aspects. In a nutshell, the
main point that he is trying to get across to the reader is how demoralizing and gruesome a battle
scene is during times of war. Scattered across the scene are the bodies of the deceased. There is
a truck going around, surveying. All of a sudden, there is a sound; one of the soldiers is still
alive. The perishing soldier begs for the truck of men to find him quick. Unfortunately, by the
time they do, they are only in time to witness his last gasps as he, too, dies. Dead Man s Dump is
a war poem which consists of vivid detail conveying to the reader the brutality of World War I. As a
reader, Rosenberg s effective usage of imagery makes the reader feel as if he were at the scene being

Examples Of Mayella Ewell Power In To Kill A Mockingbird
Is Mayella Ewell Powerful?
Throughout history power has been distributed among people in different forms. Three
components contribute to this and are seen over and over again. Some ways people gain power is
from their social class, their gender, and their race. In Harper Lee s novel To Kill A Mockingbird
these components are present relating to power. Mayella has power related to her race but however
she does not have power with her class and gender.
Mayella is poor;therefore, she is not powerful in regards to her social class. The Ewells live in
the dump near the negroes. When Lee writes, He thought he d be a hero (Document A) he
directly connects the idea that the Ewell s low social class affects how much power they have or
want to have. The Ewells thought that after they convicted a negro their social class would go
up but they still lived in a dump. Due to her living in a dump people look at her like trash. Lee
directly connects the idea of how white people in a higher social class think of white people in a
lower social class: White people wouldn t have anything to do with her because she lived among
pigs (Document C). She lives in a dump and so they consider her trash and ... Show more content on

therefore, he has more power over her and took advantage over her by making her keep

stroke Essay
Cerebral vascular accident or a stroke is the destruction of brain substance, resulting from
thrombosis, intracranial hemorrhage, or embolism, which causes vascular insufficiency. In
addition, it is an area of the brain denied blood and oxygen that is required and damage is done to
a part of the cells. The effect of the patient depends upon where the damageoccurs and the severity
of the stroke.
Each year alone about 150,000 people in America die from a stroke or are seriously disabled.
Stroke is among the top five causes of death. It generally happens very suddenly and it can take up
to five to seven days to completely effect the patient. Depending on how many of the brain cells die

After this progress starts to slow down, professionals can estimate how much progress the patient
will be likely to make.
If doctors agree that a stroke has taken place, they may do other tests to determine where the
stroke occurred, how large of an area is damaged, and how the blood flow with in the brain has
been effected; they do this by taking a CAT scan. They may also take an ECG to determine if there
is any heart disease that may have caused the stroke. In addition, they take tests to see if the patient
has high blood pressure or they may test the arteries themselves because this is a major cause of
stroke in most people. Catheterization, injecting dye into the arteries, and blood tests are the most
common tests done. A high glucose level in the blood may reveal diabetes and high blood fats
indicate thickened red blood and arteriosclerosis. There may also be a high level of red blood cells,
changing the consistency of the blood. These conditions must be treated to prevent further strokes.
The most common causes of strokes are thrombosis. This is when a clot forms in one of the
arteries, mostly in the carotid in the neck and the vertebral artery. The blood is thick and moves
very slowly through the artery. The thrombus will form on the damaged area of the artery wall
and will cut off the flow of blood to the brain. The area of the artery that is damaged is cause by
arteriosclerosis. This form of

Taking a Look at Acid Rain
The environmental challenge facing society that I have chosen to discuss is Acid Rain. The effects
of acid rain were first noticed 150 years ago in Britain, and to this day are still an issue. The pH
scale allows us to decide whether a substance is acidic or basic. If the substance has a pH of 7, it is
neutral, below seven it is acidic, or above seven it is basic. Precipitation normally has a pH of 5.6,
slightly acidic due to the CO2 in the atmosphere mixing with the rainwater to create a weak
carbonic acid. Human induced pollution also plays a role in acid rain by releasing harmful gases
such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere. This is mostly done by the
burning of fossil fuels and in industrial processes such as metal production (Middleton,2008). In
agriculture, ammonia from nitrogenous fertilisers and manures escapes to the atmosphere by
volatilisation (Tennesen, 2010).
In the past, places like North America and Europe had the worst reputation in regard to acid rain
levels due to their industrialization period. However, now it is countries such as East Asia
(especially parts of china), that have the highest levels of sulphur and nitrogen oxide gas
emissions. This is mainly due to the fact that most parts of East Asia are only beginning to develop
now and industrialisation is their main concern (Middleton, 2008). In Western Europe
anthropogenic emissions of sulphur decreased by over 60% between 1980 2000 and in the use and
Canada they were down

Review Selection of a Standardized Test
Introduction
Test administrators should understand and clarify why the test taker is being assessed,(American
Educational Research, 2014). Additionally, they should also understand why certain tests,
inventories, and diagnostic procedures are selected. As a student, in the process of achieving a
Master s degree in clinical psychology, it is essential to be aware of the reasons for certain tests,
their reliability, and validity. This especially true for a clinical psychologist, which I plan to
become. Clinical psychologists identify psychological, emotional, and behavioral concerns.
Eventually, those issues are diagnosed. Then, treatment plans are developed and implemented. This

It targets executive functions like impulse control, flexible problem solving skills, controlling
emotional responses, regulating behavior in social settings, generating ideas and initiating
activities, cognitive skills, planning, and organizing, and lastly, task monitoring, (Roth et al, 2005).
The last test, that will be reviewed, is Conners Comprehensive Behavior Rating Scales (CBRS).
The target population, for this test, includes individuals whose ages range from 6 to 18. Conners
CBRS was created to assess a wide range of behaviors, emotions, social functioning, and academic
issues, in order to diagnose, develop, and monitor treatment plans for the individual, (Conners,
2015). Conners CBRS, also, aids with special education classification, intervention planning,
progress monitoring, and research.
Element 2 In this next section, the three selected tests will be reviewed for their appropriateness of
test content, skills tested, and content coverage for the intended purpose of testing, (Code, 2004, p.

competence, and adaptive functioning scales that target specific behavior, thought, emotions, and
social interactions, (Lacalle et al, 2012). As a result, this test can provide appropriate behavioral
treatment plans. When Lacelle, Ezpeleta, and DomГ©nech evaluated this test,

Do Not Text, Just Drive Essay
Texting, as of right now, is one of the most used ways of communication. But when texting is mixed
with driving, it is not the safest combination. Texting and driving should be banned in all fifty states
for all ages because texting is a privilege, not a right, it is a distraction, it is dangerous, and innocent
lives have been tremendously affected. Although cell phone usage has become extremely evolved
within this decade, it still has brought many flaws throughout our nation. One would think with the

By any means, being patient and texting someone later cannot lead to danger or death of others.
Start realizing that texting in general, is not a priority or right for anyone to do, it is simply a
privilege. Texting and driving should be banned in all fifty states because texting is a distraction
that keeps drivers away from the road. According to the book Brain Rules, while multitasking,
research shows your error rate goes up 50 percent and it takes you twice as long to do things.
(Cooper) Texting someone is nearly the same as talking on the phone, therefore, it s an ongoing
conversation. But driving is an ongoing action, excluding stop signs and stoplights as well. As a
driver the main focus is the road. In order to send a text, the cell phone has to be the main focus.
For example, if a driver is at a stop sign, receives a text, and decides to look down at the phone.
The driver s eyes, hands, and focus completely move toward the phone and not the road anymore,
which is the main focus. With this situation, there are a number of things that can go wrong.
Someone can switch lanes really quickly, a baby can walk out the street, a car could suddenly
stop, etc. So any drivers, who plan on multitasking while driving, think twice before making that
decision. A lot of risks are taken by texting and driving, but the most important risk a driver takes
while texting is either life or death. When it comes to texting and

2003. Hungary. I remember my way on a road to an abandoned airport in the middle of the

music in the background just hit our ears. As we approached to the scene the music got louder

change that they did was their transformation from a street gang to a grassroots organization. They

Therefore, they were partially successful, they mobilized their communityand form a strong bond

Mount Pilot Research Paper
Burnt Area of Mount Pilot
The Burnt Area of Mount Pilot contains mixed stands of competing, seedlings with slower
growing Callitris seedlings and re sprouting Eucalyptus trees. There is few Callitris endlicheri, as
the species is fire sensitive and often destroyed by fire, particularly when in quick succession.
Prior to the 2003 fire the site was dominated by Callitris species of tree. The seedlings that emerged
were mostly Eucalyptus, with less dense Callitris seedlings proving that the growth of Callitris is
not consistent with long term site suitability. Surprisingly, more Eucalyptus seedlings died in the
first six years of regeneration that Callitris seedlings; competition in co existence does not
determine survivability. The major trend is that the growth of Eucalyptus seedlings is faster than
that of Callitris seedlings. The density of Eucalyptus seedlings is shown to effect Callitris
seedlings growth which thrives where Eucalyptus seedlings are sparser. Callitris may take 7 15
years to produce sufficient seeds (Cohn, Lunt, Ross, Bradstock, 2011; I. Lunt, Jones, N., Petrow,
M.,, 2003; I. Lunt, Price, J.,, 2016; Ian D Lunt, Zimmer, Cheal, 2011; Zimmer, 2012).

Callitris is the dominant flora species due to its history of land use and forestry management
practices (increasing its value as a product) it has seen reduced competition from co occurring

The Invention Of The War
War has been an important part of society since humans wandered the earth, it played an important
role in shaping society the way it is today. War comes from an disagreement between two
civilizations and as an outcome different tools and technologies have been implemented to assist in
a civilization coming out victorious. One major technological advancement that revolutionized wars
was gunpowder. The military art has been changed by the invention of gunpowder; which enables
man to command the two most powerful agents of nature, air and fire. Mathematics, chymistry,
mechanics, architecture, have been applied to the service of war; and the adverse parties oppose
to each other the most elaborate modes of attack and of defence. After the ancient Chinese
alchemists used gunpowder to make fireworks and firecrackers. After making its way into Europe
it was adapted by English and French military and played a crucial part in the way wars were
fought. Gunpowder is the most important technology that revolutionized warfare thought out the
Middle Ages in Europe as it influenced the Hundred Year War, the Invasion of Italy and the
destruction of the British Parliament. The invention of gunpowder came from ancient China*, the
book Pao P u Tzu from the Jin Dynasty (265 317A.D.) says that the Taoist Alchemists crushed up
saltpetre and sulphur. They made a mixture from the crushed powders and used them in alchemy
experiments. They were not aware of the explosive property of this mixture

A Comparison Between Fitzgerald s Great Gatsby and...
Fitzgerald s Great Gatsby and Veblen s The Theory of the Leisure Class
The American Dream is real; Americans are able to rise out of poverty and into leisurely lifestyles
with a bit of luck and a lot of hard work. Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby and Thorstein Veblen s The
Theory of the Leisure Class both address issues of status and wealth that arise from peoples pursuits
of the American Dream. But the authors differ in their beliefs about the nature and motives of
peoples pursuits of wealth. To begin with, Fitzgerald disagrees with Veblen s notion of pecuniary
emulation as being intrinsic behavior (a goal in and of itself). He does this by conveying that
Gatsby s flamboyant lifestyle is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fitzgerald s explanation of peoples pursuits of wealth, however, attributes these pursuits not to
an internal need for contentment but to external, tangible goals. Gatsby throws extravagant
parties in the hopes that he ll be able to see Daisy and not for his own enjoyment or self respect .
In fact, Fitzgerald takes great pains to convey that Gatsby does not enjoy his parties Gatsby is
often alone on the marble steps or lamenting about [Daisy] not having a good time (p116). His
conspicuous consumption is not motivated by his need for invidious distinction but by an
external, tangible goal he wants Daisy to reenter his life and fall in love with him again.
Fitzgerald echoes the ideas of Josiah Strong, who wrote of pursuits in life that need to precede the
self seeking (p164, Our Country) pursuit of money. While Strong most values spiritual quickening
(p165), Fitzgerald seems to value commitment to one s ideals (requited love in Gatsby s case).
Fitzgerald further disagrees with Veblen s belief that the desire for invidious distinction is a
pervasive trait that shapes [one s] scheme of life (p33) through a twist in the Great Gatsby s plot.
After Gatsby realizes that Daisy is not pleased by his parties or by his extravagance, he

Neovascular Age-Related Eye Disease Study
The effect of omega 3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid intake (LCPUFA) on neovascular age
related macular degeneration (NV AMD) and central geographic atrophy (CGA) over a 12 year
intake was studied through a prospective cohort study. The cohort was from the Age Related Eye
Disease Study (AREDS), which is a large phase 3 clinical trial that has tested nutrient and vitamin
supplement formulations as prevention methods for AMD. Categories of AMD and risk of
progression were determined by the size and extent of drusen and abnormalities of the retinal
pigment epithelium (RPE) in each eye, the evaluation of stereoscopic photographs, and visual
acuity (SanGiovanni et al., 2009). AREDS supported that individuals with the highest intake of...

In the Blue Mountain Eye Study, one serving of fish per week was associated with reduced risk
of early AMD onset among patients with less than the median baseline alpha linoleic acid
consumption (Krishnadev, Meleth, Chew, 2010). In a prospective study of participants in the
Nurses Health Study (NHS) and Health Professionals Study, diets that were high in omega 3
LCPUFAs were inversely associated with risk of AMD when intake of linoleic acid was low at
baseline (Semba, 2007). The NHS and Health Professionals Follow up Study, consisting of 72,000
participants, indicated that individuals with the highest DHA intakes are at a reduced risk for
AMD. In an intervention trial, participants with a high intake of DHA showed increased macular
pigment optical density (MPOD), which is an indicator of healthy retinas (Schleicher, Weikel,
Garber Taylor, 2013). Data was compiled from meta analyses, population based cohort studies, and
case controlled trials from Medline, Pubmed, The Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar shows
that patients with intermediate risk of AMD or advanced AMD benefit from omega 3 fatty acids
(Sin, Liu Lam, 2013). The effects of lutein, zeaxanthin and other carotenoids intakes

A Report On The Emergency Department
S (situation): Hi, my name Kelsey and I am a nurse in the emergency department. I am calling about
Shannon O Reilly s most recent laboratory results.
B (background): Ms. O Reilly is 24 years old who came to the emergency in a DKA crisis earlier
this morning and has been DM1 since she was 3 years old.
A (assessment): Ms. O Reilly s vital signs are temperature of 37.5 C, pulse of 112, blood pressure
of 102/52, and respirations of 24. Her respirations are still deep but have a regular rhythm. She has
a CBS of 8.1 and regular insulin running as per orders. The lab work shows uncompensated
metabolic acidosis with no hypoxia. Ms. O Reilly s neurological status has improved with a GSC
of 13. Her dehydration is being treated with NS containing 40mEQ KCL/L running at 200ml/hr and
potassium levels maintained at 4.
R (recommendation): Do you want to continue with the current care plan continued with frequent
CBS and potassium monitoring?
Describe your rationale for the recommendations made. Shannon s glucose levels are still high
(above 6.1 mmol/L) thus still needs the insulin drip (Robbins et al., 2010). Administration of insulin
and efforts made to correct metabolic acidosis forces potassium into the cells causing hypokalemia
(Bopp, 2010). Thus, even though the potassium is within therapeutic levels (3.5 5 mmol/L) there is
a high chance that Shannon may experience hypokalemia and the administration of NS with
potassium is necessary (Bopp, 2010).

A Research On Meadow Hills Hospital
Meadow Hills Hospital is a two hundred bed hospital with a large Medical Staff that serves a
population of three hundred thousand. It is one of four similar hospitals in the region. They do not
currently have an EHR, but they re financial systems are well developed. They have a good
amount of money in reserve to spend on any solution they feel is needed. Historically, their IT
function has reported up through the Chief Financial Officer. This has led to their financial systems
being well developed. But, their Clinical systems are significantly less developed. Clinicians have
been ok with this arrangement. Not having more advanced clinical systems has allowed them to
develop and maintain processes that they are comfortable with. This is a comfort for the
clinicians, but is likely costing the organization money as records are paper based, not electronic.
Also, as they have no CPOE installed, they are not performing the safety checks, such as drug
interaction that can come with those systems. This is placing an unnecessary risk on patients.
Developing an IT Strategy for Meadow Hills Hospitalwould likely revolve around bolstering the
clinical side of IT. An IT Strategy would assist the organization in knowing how and where to
invest the money stored in their reserves. This can also ensure that their IT goals are in line with
their overall organization goals. As they are currently organized, IT reports up to the CFO. This is
a formula to ensure that IT goals

Scarface Film Analysis
The Gangster film Scarface (DePalma) is about the rise and eventual fall of Cuban immigrant, Tony
Montana. Throughout the film the viewer witnesses how Tony Montana goes from a criminal in
Cuba to a drug overlord in America. The average viewer cannot connect to the arc of Tony
Montana. But, the average viewer can connect to what Tony Montana is working for, the American
dream. Brain DePalma chooses purposefully to have a hyper masculine, narcissistic, megalomaniac
immigrant as the main character of a story of American dream. In Scarface, DePalma show the
universality of the American dream. By utilizing various filming techniques, DePalma shows how
the American dream is available for everyone. DePalma utilizes zooming and filmcuts to show how
the American dream is for everyone. Scarface, following the traditional film three act narrative
structure, ends it second act with Tony Montana immediately after executing his old boss. The
camera opens on a close up of Tony Montana. The camera then cuts to a shot of a moving blimp
saying, The World is Yours . Before the blimp s message can move to an advertisement, the
camera then cuts back to Tony Montana, holds for a few seconds, the zooms out to a long shot
encompassing the entire house. DePalma purposefully chooses to film this scene this way.
Opening on a close up of Tony Montana show the audience that he is the focus of the scene. When
the camera cuts to the slogan on the blimp the audience enters the eyes of Tony Montana for cut.
They see the slogan the same way Tony Montana sees it. When the camera zooms out and shows
the entire house and Tony Montana s new wife, the audience understands that Tony Montana now
has everything he could ever want. By keeping Tony Montana in the center of the frame, the
audience can remember Tony Montana from the beginning of the film and see how far he has
come. The audience can then see that Tony Montana has achieved the American dream. DePalma
utilizes zooming and film cuts to show how the American dream is for everyone. In addition to
panning and zooming, DePalma also utilizes long takes to show how the American dream is for
everyone. The average shot length, or the average of the length of all the shots in a film, in

Osseous Tissue Research Paper
Osseous tissue provides essential functions in the body. It protects our vital organs and the bone
marrow within this tissue provides our bodies with blood cell production needed to support our
other internal organs. Ligaments connect our bones together by joints to allow for our bodies
flexibility. In essence, if we didn t have bones, we wouldn t have the proper bloodcell production to
support our other organs. Without bones we wouldn t have the proper protection against damage to
our internal organs. without bones we wouldn t have the muscles and ligaments to allow us to

Copper Nitrate Synthesis Lab Report
In Part C copper seemed to be the least reactive with the nitrate solutions of all of the metals that
were tested. On the other hand, magnesium seemed to be very reactive, as it did have a reaction
with each of the nitrate solutions. In Part B it seemed as though iron had the most violent reaction
with hydrochloric acid. Magnesium is combined with both copper sulphate (CuSO4) and copper
nitrate (Cu(NO3)2). The reactions with both solutions show some similarities such as producing
particles. However with the copper sulphate the solution turns bluer, but in the copper nitrate the
magnesium actually turns into a blue hue. The metals from all three parts if placed in a reactivity
series, from most reactive to least reactive, would look like this:

In particular, the production costs of electricity rise, which raises manufacturing costs. For the
consumer, the price of gasoline (petrol) and diesel for cars and other vehicles rises, leading to
reduced consumer confidence and spending, higher transportation costs and general price rising.
Energy resources have depleted! Whatever resources are available are simply too expensive to
buy or already acquired by countries which had planned and acted long time ago. Delayed
efforts in the exploration sector have not been able to find sufficient amounts of energy
resources. Nations of the world which have their own reserves are not supplying energy
resources anymore; only the old contracts made decades ago are active. Airplanes, trains, cars,
motorbikes, buses and trucks, all modes of transportation are coming to a stand still. Many
industries have closed due to insufficient power supply. Price of oil has gone above the ceiling.
At domestic level, alternate methods like solar, biogas and other methods are being tried for
mere survival. The above is a likely scenario of Pakistan and around the globe after 25 years. A
pessimistic view, but realistic enough to think about and plan for the future. But are we doing
anything about it? Lets have a look at the current energy situation of Pakistan and the world.
Pakistan s economy is performing at a very high note with GDP growing

The Gritty World Of Crime Fiction
In the gritty world of crime fiction, a detective must be prepared to face any number of gruesome
and impossible challenges that come with living in the traditional urban landscape. One of the
most difficult challenges is the detective s never ending fight to keep control in a chaotic society,
and a serious threat to that authority is the ever dangerous temptation of the women in his life.
Crime fiction uses a division of female sexuality to take power from the women of the novel and
give it to the men of society. Women in crime fiction novels are commonly depicted as either
sinners or saints in crime fiction. Although crime fiction is is good at provoking thought about
moral grey areas, the same treatment is not extended toward the females in the genre. In the mind
of both the authors and readers, there is a black and white view of women and how they should
represent their sexuality. The first archetypal womanthat most associate with this genre is the
femme fatale, a woman who, according to Hard Boiled Ideology, is an aggressive, sexually
avaricious, and dangerous and are perceived at first ... to be highly desirable, and are later
discovered to be perverted and immoral (Ogdon). An example of this can be found in Dashiell
Hammetts The Maltese Falcon, with Sam Spade s love interest, Brigid. When Spade first meets
Brigid, he notices how she approaches his office with tentative steps and her timid smile and uneasy
eyes (Hammett 4). In this first meeting, Brigid

Socrates told his students that the the unquestioned life is not worth living (Stockdale 1). He is saying that if a person does not question their life and is able to just live without questioning the society, then life is not worth living. This influenced Plato to question society and state his opinions through his writings. Socrates was mentioned in many of Plato s dialogues as the central character. Socrates was convicted of treason by the Athenians and sentenced to death. His death was based on his attitude and teachings. Introduction Tesco is one of the biggest retailer in UK which provides food and non food products. However, a ВЈ4.7 billion property impairment results to a loss of ВЈ6.4 billion. Tesco reported a massive property write down of ВЈ7bn in the 2014 financial results of one off items, which contains restructuring costs, goodwill, impairments and resolution of the commercial income recognition scandal in September 2014 (John Stokdyk 2015). However, in recent years, advances in medical and medicinal biotechnology have produced a surge in the number of targeted oral chemotherapymedications [1, 2, 3]; these are believed to be safer and less costly. You never really think how it gets there or why there isn t any left. When you go to the store to buy groceries and the price has went up you tend to get upset. Although, when they go down you think to yourself that you better stock up. All of these changes occur because of demand and supply. Demand and supply are the key components for the economy. Functions Of Human Sensory Biology Sensory Biology Lab 6 Name: Dominic Siaw Biology 132 T.A: Marian Wahl Date Performed: 4/7/15 Date due: 4/14/1 Abstract In this laboratory students will perform various experiments to demonstrate various properties of human sensory biology. Students worked in pairs and performed 5 experiments. These experiments were based on touch receptors, temperature receptors, two point discrimination on the skin, locating distance from the fovea to our blind spot and measuring visual activity. T test was performed and the results explained that there is no significant difference in how the body adapts to external stimuli. The test subject closed their eyes and a coin was placed on the back of the test subject s hand (lower side of right most knuckle) and the stop watch was started. The clock was stopped when the test subject stopped feeling the coin. The time was recorded. In a nutshell, the main point that he is trying to get across to the reader is how demoralizing and gruesome a battle scene is during times of war. Scattered across the scene are the bodies of the deceased. There is a truck going around, surveying. All of a sudden, there is a sound; one of the soldiers is still alive. The perishing soldier begs for the truck of men to find him quick. Unfortunately, by the time they do, they are only in time to witness his last gasps as he, too, dies. In addition, it is an area of the brain denied blood and oxygen that is required and damage is done to a part of the cells. The effect of the patient depends upon where the damageoccurs and the severity of the stroke. Each year alone about 150,000 people in America die from a stroke or are seriously disabled. If doctors agree that a stroke has taken place, they may do other tests to determine where the stroke occurred, how large of an area is damaged, and how the blood flow with in the brain has been effected; they do this by taking a CAT scan. They may also take an ECG to determine if there is any heart disease that may have caused the stroke. In addition, they take tests to see if the patient has high blood pressure or they may test the arteries themselves because this is a major cause of stroke in most people. Catheterization, injecting dye into the arteries, and blood tests are the most common tests done. A high glucose level in the blood may reveal diabetes and high blood fats indicate thickened red blood and arteriosclerosis. There may also be a high level of red blood cells, changing the consistency of the blood. These conditions must be treated to prevent further strokes. The most common causes of strokes are thrombosis. This is when a clot forms in one of the arteries, mostly in the carotid in the neck and the vertebral artery. • 28. Taking a Look at Acid Rain The environmental challenge facing society that I have chosen to discuss is Acid Rain. The effects of acid rain were first noticed 150 years ago in Britain, and to this day are still an issue. The pH scale allows us to decide whether a substance is acidic or basic. If the substance has a pH of 7, it is neutral, below seven it is acidic, or above seven it is basic. Precipitation normally has a pH of 5.6, slightly acidic due to the CO2 in the atmosphere mixing with the rainwater to create a weak carbonic acid. Human induced pollution also plays a role in acid rain by releasing harmful gases such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere. This is mostly done by the burning of fossil fuels and in industrial processes such as metal production (Middleton,2008). In agriculture, ammonia from nitrogenous fertilisers and manures escapes to the atmosphere by volatilisation (Tennesen, 2010). In the past, places like North America and Europe had the worst reputation in regard to acid rain levels due to their industrialization period. However, now it is countries such as East Asia (especially parts of china), that have the highest levels of sulphur and nitrogen oxide gas emissions. This is mainly due to the fact that most parts of East Asia are only beginning to develop now and industrialisation is their main concern (Middleton, 2008). In Western Europe anthropogenic emissions of sulphur decreased by over 60% between 1980 2000 and in the use and Canada they were down ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mount Pilot Research Paper Burnt Area of Mount Pilot The Burnt Area of Mount Pilot contains mixed stands of competing, seedlings with slower growing Callitris seedlings and re sprouting Eucalyptus trees. There is few Callitris endlicheri, as the species is fire sensitive and often destroyed by fire, particularly when in quick succession. Prior to the 2003 fire the site was dominated by Callitris species of tree. The seedlings that emerged were mostly Eucalyptus, with less dense Callitris seedlings proving that the growth of Callitris is not consistent with long term site suitability. Surprisingly, more Eucalyptus seedlings died in the first six years of regeneration that Callitris seedlings; competition in co existence does not determine survivability. The major trend is that the growth of Eucalyptus seedlings is faster than that of Callitris seedlings. Mathematics, chymistry, mechanics, architecture, have been applied to the service of war; and the adverse parties oppose to each other the most elaborate modes of attack and of defence. • 42. A Comparison Between Fitzgerald s Great Gatsby and... Fitzgerald s Great Gatsby and Veblen s The Theory of the Leisure Class The American Dream is real; Americans are able to rise out of poverty and into leisurely lifestyles with a bit of luck and a lot of hard work. Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby and Thorstein Veblen s The Theory of the Leisure Class both address issues of status and wealth that arise from peoples pursuits of the American Dream. But the authors differ in their beliefs about the nature and motives of peoples pursuits of wealth. To begin with, Fitzgerald disagrees with Veblen s notion of pecuniary emulation as being intrinsic behavior (a goal in and of itself). He does this by conveying that Gatsby s flamboyant lifestyle is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fitzgerald s explanation of peoples pursuits of wealth, however, attributes these pursuits not to an internal need for contentment but to external, tangible goals. Gatsby throws extravagant parties in the hopes that he ll be able to see Daisy and not for his own enjoyment or self respect . In fact, Fitzgerald takes great pains to convey that Gatsby does not enjoy his parties Gatsby is often alone on the marble steps or lamenting about [Daisy] not having a good time (p116). His conspicuous consumption is not motivated by his need for invidious distinction but by an external, tangible goal he wants Daisy to reenter his life and fall in love with him again. Fitzgerald echoes the ideas of Josiah Strong, who wrote of pursuits in life that need to precede the self seeking (p164, Our Country) pursuit of money. While Strong most values spiritual quickening (p165), Fitzgerald seems to value commitment to one s ideals (requited love in Gatsby s case). Fitzgerald further disagrees with Veblen s belief that the desire for invidious distinction is a pervasive trait that shapes [one s] scheme of life (p33) through a twist in the Great Gatsby s plot. After Gatsby realizes that Daisy is not pleased by his parties or by his extravagance, he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Neovascular Age-Related Eye Disease Study The effect of omega 3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid intake (LCPUFA) on neovascular age related macular degeneration (NV AMD) and central geographic atrophy (CGA) over a 12 year intake was studied through a prospective cohort study. The cohort was from the Age Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS), which is a large phase 3 clinical trial that has tested nutrient and vitamin supplement formulations as prevention methods for AMD. Categories of AMD and risk of progression were determined by the size and extent of drusen and abnormalities of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in each eye, the evaluation of stereoscopic photographs, and visual acuity (SanGiovanni et al., 2009). AREDS supported that individuals with the highest intake of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the Blue Mountain Eye Study, one serving of fish per week was associated with reduced risk of early AMD onset among patients with less than the median baseline alpha linoleic acid consumption (Krishnadev, Meleth, Chew, 2010). In a prospective study of participants in the Nurses Health Study (NHS) and Health Professionals Study, diets that were high in omega 3 LCPUFAs were inversely associated with risk of AMD when intake of linoleic acid was low at baseline (Semba, 2007). The NHS and Health Professionals Follow up Study, consisting of 72,000 participants, indicated that individuals with the highest DHA intakes are at a reduced risk for AMD. In an intervention trial, participants with a high intake of DHA showed increased macular pigment optical density (MPOD), which is an indicator of healthy retinas (Schleicher, Weikel, Garber Taylor, 2013). Data was compiled from meta analyses, population based cohort studies, and case controlled trials from Medline, Pubmed, The Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar shows that patients with intermediate risk of AMD or advanced AMD benefit from omega 3 fatty acids (Sin, Liu Lam, 2013). • 44. A Report On The Emergency Department S (situation): Hi, my name Kelsey and I am a nurse in the emergency department. I am calling about Shannon O Reilly s most recent laboratory results. B (background): Ms. O Reilly is 24 years old who came to the emergency in a DKA crisis earlier this morning and has been DM1 since she was 3 years old. A (assessment): Ms. O Reilly s vital signs are temperature of 37.5 C, pulse of 112, blood pressure of 102/52, and respirations of 24. Her respirations are still deep but have a regular rhythm. She has a CBS of 8.1 and regular insulin running as per orders. The lab work shows uncompensated metabolic acidosis with no hypoxia. Ms. O Reilly s neurological status has improved with a GSC of 13. Her dehydration is being treated with NS containing 40mEQ KCL/L running at 200ml/hr and potassium levels maintained at 4. R (recommendation): Do you want to continue with the current care plan continued with frequent CBS and potassium monitoring? Describe your rationale for the recommendations made. Shannon s glucose levels are still high (above 6.1 mmol/L) thus still needs the insulin drip (Robbins et al., 2010). Administration of insulin and efforts made to correct metabolic acidosis forces potassium into the cells causing hypokalemia (Bopp, 2010). Thus, even though the potassium is within therapeutic levels (3.5 5 mmol/L) there is a high chance that Shannon may experience hypokalemia and the administration of NS with potassium is necessary (Bopp, 2010). • 45. A Research On Meadow Hills Hospital Meadow Hills Hospital is a two hundred bed hospital with a large Medical Staff that serves a population of three hundred thousand. It is one of four similar hospitals in the region. They do not currently have an EHR, but they re financial systems are well developed. They have a good amount of money in reserve to spend on any solution they feel is needed. Historically, their IT function has reported up through the Chief Financial Officer. This has led to their financial systems being well developed. But, their Clinical systems are significantly less developed. Clinicians have been ok with this arrangement. Not having more advanced clinical systems has allowed them to develop and maintain processes that they are comfortable with. This is a comfort for the clinicians, but is likely costing the organization money as records are paper based, not electronic. Also, as they have no CPOE installed, they are not performing the safety checks, such as drug interaction that can come with those systems. This is placing an unnecessary risk on patients. Developing an IT Strategy for Meadow Hills Hospitalwould likely revolve around bolstering the clinical side of IT. An IT Strategy would assist the organization in knowing how and where to invest the money stored in their reserves. This can also ensure that their IT goals are in line with their overall organization goals. As they are currently organized, IT reports up to the CFO. This is a formula to ensure that IT goals ... On the other hand, magnesium seemed to be very reactive, as it did have a reaction with each of the nitrate solutions. In Part B it seemed as though iron had the most violent reaction with hydrochloric acid. Magnesium is combined with both copper sulphate (CuSO4) and copper nitrate (Cu(NO3)2). The reactions with both solutions show some similarities such as producing particles. However with the copper sulphate the solution turns bluer, but in the copper nitrate the magnesium actually turns into a blue hue. For the consumer, the price of gasoline (petrol) and diesel for cars and other vehicles rises, leading to reduced consumer confidence and spending, higher transportation costs and general price rising. Delayed efforts in the exploration sector have not been able to find sufficient amounts of energy resources. Nations of the world which have their own reserves are not supplying energy resources anymore; only the old contracts made decades ago are active. Airplanes, trains, cars, motorbikes, buses and trucks, all modes of transportation are coming to a stand still. Many industries have closed due to insufficient power supply. Price of oil has gone above the ceiling. At domestic level, alternate methods like solar, biogas and other methods are being tried for mere survival. • 51. The Gritty World Of Crime Fiction In the gritty world of crime fiction, a detective must be prepared to face any number of gruesome and impossible challenges that come with living in the traditional urban landscape. One of the most difficult challenges is the detective s never ending fight to keep control in a chaotic society, and a serious threat to that authority is the ever dangerous temptation of the women in his life. Crime fiction uses a division of female sexuality to take power from the women of the novel and give it to the men of society. Women in crime fiction novels are commonly depicted as either sinners or saints in crime fiction. Although crime fiction is is good at provoking thought about moral grey areas, the same treatment is not extended toward the females in the genre. In the mind of both the authors and readers, there is a black and white view of women and how they should represent their sexuality. The first archetypal womanthat most associate with this genre is the femme fatale, a woman who, according to Hard Boiled Ideology, is an aggressive, sexually avaricious, and dangerous and are perceived at first ... to be highly desirable, and are later discovered to be perverted and immoral (Ogdon). An example of this can be found in Dashiell Hammetts The Maltese Falcon, with Sam Spade s love interest, Brigid. When Spade first meets Brigid, he notices how she approaches his office with tentative steps and her timid smile and uneasy eyes (Hammett 4). In this first meeting, Brigid ...
