“ Is Caledonian Health & Fitness a Safe Working Environment?”   Mr Burns was horrified to read an article in the Scottish Times recently questioning the health and safety policies used to provide employees with a safe working environment. Drastic action was needed so he set up a meeting with Mr Wallace – the Personnel Manager – to discuss the importance of Health & Safety in the Workplace Mr Wallace was able to inform him of the following ...............................
Potential Hazards  in the Workplace There are many potential hazards which exist in the modern office: Wet floors  resulting in slips and falls Loose cables  resulting in a trip Objects falling from a height  resulting in a bash on the head Sore backs  resulting in heavy objects being carried incorrectly
Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 This Act is designed to ensure that EVERYONE in the organisation is provided with a safe working environment The Act outlines the following The responsibilities of the employer The responsibilities of the employee Good working practices
Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 – the  EMPLOYER’S  responsibilities Mr Burns must make sure that he provides the following at Caledonian Health & Fitness: Look after employee’s welfare eg offer free eye tests Provide protective clothing where necessary Provide First Aid facilities (must  have First Aiders at work and updated  First Aid kits Keep records of any accidents or  incidents which occur Prepare a Health & Safety policy
Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 – the  EMPLOYEE’S  responsibilities All employees at Caledonian Health & Fitness must ensure the following: That they look after their own health and safety That they take care of their  colleagues’ health & safety That they cooperate at  all times with their employer  to make sure that the  workplace is a healthy and  safe environment at all times
In order for the HASAW Act to be enforced Mr Burns must set up GOOD PRACTICE within Caledonian Health & Fitness What is  GOOD PRACTICE ? Make sure that all  employees take care of  their equipment at all  times to prevent any damage  or faults occurring Make sure that workstations are kept clean and tidy at all times Make sure that no liquids are consumed near the VDUs Makes sure that all walkways and fire exits are kept clear at all times

HASAW (DSE) 1992 –  the  EMPLOYER’S  responsibilities Mr Burns must make sure that he provides the following at Caledonian Health & Fitness: All workstations must meet the minimum requirements eg footrests; brightness control Employees should be offered free eye tests and glasses if required Ensure that equipment is safe to use Enforce breaks – these are essential as employees should not work at the PC constantly Supply anti-glare screens to prevent headaches Provide employees with appropriate training
All employees at Caledonian Health & Fitness must ensure the following: That they use the equipment properly That they use adjustable brightness control, colour etc to their individual needs That they use the chairs  correctly – chairs will  have adjustable back rests That they use anti-glare  screens for the VDUs HASAW (DSE) 1992 –  the  EMPLOYEE’S  responsibilities
All employees at Caledonian Health & Fitness must carry out the following procedure: Switch off the machine Place a notice on the machine telling others that a fault has occurred Fill in a Faults Report and pass it to the correct person eg Line Manager Do not use the machine  until it has been  completely repaired Mr Wallace decides to set up a  PROCEDURE  so that all employees know what to do if the equipment develops a fault?
In groups of 3 or 4 create a procedure which could be used in your classroom when the printer breaks down Ask your teacher if the winning procedure can be displayed on the classroom wall Activities Complete the following tasks in your Activities Booklet: Question 14:  problems faced using Display Screen Equipment GROUP ACTIVITY
All employees at Caledonian Health & Fitness must carry out the following procedure: Contact a first-aider immediately Stay beside the injured person – reassure them that they are going to be okay Make sure that the injured person remains still – important not to move them Complete an Accident Report Form and make sure that all details are entered into the Accident Book Mr Wallace also decides to set up a  PROCEDURE  so that all employees know what to do if they  witness an accident
