Objectives of the unit
 Management is defined as an act of managing people and their work, for
achieving a common goal by using the organization’s resources.
 It creates an environment under which the manager and his subordinates
can work together for the attainment of group objective.
 It is a group of people who use their skills and talent in running the
complete system of the organization. It is an activity, a function, a process,
a discipline and much more.
Management
 The term management has two meaning;
1. Management as a group of functional people
2. Management as performance/ process/ activity
Meaning of Basic Elements of Management
 (a) Management has scientific basis because management techniques are
susceptible to measurement and factual determination.
 (b) Management is an Art because management means coordinating and
getting work done through others
Management may be called an Art as well as
Science:

Administration and Management
 Organization:
 Organized group of people with a particular purpose.
 Administration:
 All the techniques and procedures employed in operating the
educational organization in accordance with established policies.
 Management:
 Execution of policy with in the limits to achieve organizational goals.
 Foyal in 1957 presented the following elements of management. (POCCC).

5. Controlling

 Newman and Summers in 1981 presented the following elements of
management (POSLCM)

4. Leading
5. Controlling
6. Measuring

1. Division of work.
2. Authority, responsibility & accountability.
3. Discipline.
4. Unity of command.
5. Unity of direction.
6. Subordination of individual interest to organizational interest.
7. Remuneration of personnel.
8. Centralization.
9. Scalar chain of command.
10. Order.
11. Equity.
12. Stability of tenure of personnel.
13. Initiative.
14. Esprit de corps.

1. To enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of infrastructure.
2. To eliminate wastage.
3. Create a good school atmosphere.
4. To maintain a public image of the institution..
5. To ensure appropriate utilization .
6. To create interest and love for learning.
7. To provide and ensure equal opportunities of education to all the citizens.

  • 4.  Management is defined as an act of managing people and their work, for achieving a common goal by using the organization’s resources.  It creates an environment under which the manager and his subordinates can work together for the attainment of group objective.  It is a group of people who use their skills and talent in running the complete system of the organization. It is an activity, a function, a process, a discipline and much more. Management
