We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

4. Masthead: contains the magazine
name so that when it comes to
looking for your magazine that you
want to buy you can find it straight
away with its big, bold letters.
They’ve used red in the masthead
to connote the urgency that you
must show to buy this magazine.
Putting the name in bold depicts
that they want there magazine to
stand out to their audience.
Strapline: Vibe magazine doesn’t have a brand slogan on their
magazine as they may feel it doesn’t contribute to the magazine
massively and the fact that they have bigger stories to put on
the magazine than putting on the slogan.
Main image: the main image
in the middle of the magazine
is always linked in with the
main headline to show the
main focus of this issue of the
magazine.
Cover lines: these are other
stories that are in the
magazine also and they also
reveal parts of other artists
lives that they have exclusively
been told. They have cover
lines because it also allows
others to read about multiple
other artists. The verbal code
“SEX, DRUGS AND R&B” is
stereotypical of a R&B artist
and magazine.
Main Headline: this is where they have put
the main story in the biggest text as it is
what is focused on in this magazine copy.
This main headline is about Kendrick Lamar
and VIBE the makers of this magazine have
called him the New God MC and in this
issue they tell us why.
Deconstruction of a front cover
This type of shot is a medium close up as
they have focused there shot on the
elbows up. The artist is Kendrick Lamar
and they have put his image up as he’s
the main focus of this magazine, he
denotes “star appeal” (Richard dyer)
5. The main image
connotes that the
interview is involving
them for example on
this one it is Soulja
Boy. It indicates that
they are revealing
some of their past
memories as a child
about his life and his
suspicion of him using
drugs.
This is a pull quote from
the interview of Soulja
Boy and they have
quoted “Life of a shooting
star!” which depicts that
his rise to fame has been
very successful and he is
now a well known artist.
This is where they have
put the page number of
the article and if you
were to go and buy this
article you can go
straight to that page to
and write about it in
further detail, this issue
is number 85.
The drop capital is where the
magazine has outlined where you
should start reading from. The drop
capital is used to make the
interview stand out, putting a drop
capital in makes the reader read it.
Deconstructing a double page spread
The stand first is
the introductory
paragraph to the
interview. The
audience tend to
read this before
they read the
interview.
6. Genre
Vibe focuses on hip hop and R&B music, with the magazine

music industry is aiming to attract them because of the style of
music is very upbeat.
The most popular genre of music is R&B music with a percentage
of 29% and falling just short was rock with 25%.
The Hip Hop genre is one of the most popular genres in the
music industry. But R&B is slowly coming back into the frame as
the most popular worldwide.
https://infogr.am/Percentage-of-Music-Genre
7. Frequency
The frequency of the magazine is quarterly coming out every 3
months which is keeping us up to date with the latest music and
news about the artists. It comes out every 3 months as it then
gives them time to get information about artists that they want
to put in there magazine. Also they can then have the time to get
an interview in from the main focus of their magazine for that
issue.
8. Content
Inside of Vibe magazine is there main focus of that issue which is put in
the centre of the page with any image of them. Also having other
cover lines as extras put in showing what may come up in the next
issue. Also keeps people up to date with what happening in the world
of music and what there is too watch out for.
9. Analysis of Vibe contents page
The main headline and main image. The main
artist of this magazine is also in the contents
to highlight even more to reader that this
artist is the main focus on the magazine.
Subheadings are the bold text and the sub
lines are the paragraph underneath the
subheadings to give you a little bit of
information.
Next to the contents title there is the date
and brand identity with Vibe masthead.

primarily male from the younger generation because it focuses
on hip-hop music.
Vibe Magazine do not have a mission statement, I have looked in
various places and cannot find anything.
11. Target Audience
Hartley
Age: Vibe magazine aim the magazine at the age range of 18-34 as this type of music style is very upbeat and
they know it will attract a lot of people to there magazine. Because the genre of the magazine is R&B and hip-
hop the music magazine will appeal to a younger demographic.
Gender: the gender that the magazine is mainly aimed at males but females also read this magazine, with just
over 50% being male and under 50% being female.
Class: the class of people that will read this magazine is the middle class as this end of the class if where people
are starting to completely mature (18-34). They would be the best class to aim at because this type of music
will be more suited to this class.
Katz
The audience can relate to the artist on the front cover through the clothing that they are wearing and then
this may bring more people to buy there magazine as they may feel it suits there style of music etc.
The audience can learn something new as well when reading the magazine, for example, new artists that are
coming up and maybe an artist that they have never heard of before, also you could find out something new
about an artist that you didn’t know.
Maslow
By reading the magazine full of celebrities and will be driven by improving their status in society. This is called
social-climbing. This is important in todays society because it gives the audience a sense of confidence and will
this will improve their image and character massively. It allows them to escape reality and let themselves free
into their own world.
Socio-economic
The audience will be in categories B to E. Their will be a variety of different audiences that will read Vibe
magazine for example, students and people who are in middle management with office jobs. The audience will
have to be able to afford the magazine therefore appealing to category B.
12. Form and Style
The layout of the magazine is well presented
as it clearly denotes the main focus of the
magazine and an image through the centre
of the magazine. The masthead fading into
the artists image.
They use the colours white, black, red and
grey on this front cover to convey the
different areas which is in this magazine, for
example, on the far right of the magazine
there's a list on it and they've used red as
the heading of the list and used black then
grey continuously down the list to show the
many areas inside. The layout is simple and
has ‘repeated’ (Steve Neale 1980)
conventions from music magazines such as
the masthead, coverlines and barcode.
13. Website annotations
The magazine website contains links
that will send you to different areas of
the magazines, that will allow you to
read there news that they have put up.
They will have links that send you to
there Facebook and Twitter pages and
then you can follow them and keep up
with latest news that comes out.
Various types of social media will allow
you to look at their social media pages
and then can go through there page to
read or gather any information.
Areas such as music at the top will
allow you to search up what music
areas they cover and what latest news
has appeared in the industry.

I have not received an email
back from Vibe magazine
16. Production Process
These are the steps you must take when producing a magazine.
Date of Publication
Firstly you need to set a date for when you’re going to get your magazine published. This is when you want
your magazine to be put on the shelves. Once this date has been confirmed you are then working with a
schedule.
Managing the Schedule
This step is very important because if you want your magazine to be produced correctly then you must follow
the schedule properly. When you are scheduling a magazine you should set them so if there were any mishaps
that were to happen that you can without no failure that the deadline is met.
Editorial and budgetary decision
This is the editorial stages of the magazine where they decide what headlines are going to be in the next issue.
They talk about what they want to put in such as the main headlines and other headlines that will be featured
in the magazine. They will then start on the illustrations of the magazine and where they decide where they
can spend there budget.
Content Acquisition
The in-house staff writers and the external writers are asked to write in topics that are specialists in that area,
where also the artwork and graphics are worked on. The artwork is the illustrations that will be shown
throughout the whole magazine.
Sub-editing
Sub-editing focuses on the big picture in the way of the quality control. If the media organization is big enough
they will hire a sub-editor. If you didn't have a sub-editor the main editor will have to do the editing.
17. Production Process continued
Page Layout
There job is to layout the various pages that come together to make the magazine. When putting the magazine
together they use very powerful desktop publishing programs such as InDesign or PageMaker to get the
magazine done to its highest quality.
Proofreading
You will need to proofread your work after you’ve done it to prevent sending it out on the shelves with
mistakes. It is easier to proofread a hardcopy than a softcopy. Any mistakes that are made can easily be spotted
and changed instantly.
File emailed to print
After proofreading it gets sent to the printers and then they have the job of printing of multiple copies of the
magazine to be sold.
Distribution
When you have finished all of them steps and finished with the printing of the magazines, they then will
package them away and send them to a warehouse. The warehouse will the distribute them onto multiple shop
shelves.

connotes that the
interview is involving
them for example on
this one it is Jay-Z. He
has given the article a
piece of what he
experiences through
his music career and
give the article
information about
the most exciting
people in the music
industry.
This is a pull quote from the interview of Jay-Z and
they have quoted “Everyone trying to do
something new is going to come up against a Noel
Gallagher figure in their life ” which depicts that
he thinks noel Gallagher tried his rise to fame by
doing something new and other artists may find
that’s they way to go.
This is where they have put the page
number of the article and if you
were to go and buy this article you
can go straight to that page to read
the whole article and write about it
in further detail, this issue is number
52.
The drop capital is where
the magazine has

putting a drop capital in
makes the reader read it.
They have put a
massive, red J in the
middle of the text to
show that it is Jay-Z
and it’s the beginning
of his name
21. Genre
The genre of The Q magazine is a pop/rock music, mostly from
the present with a few features about R&B and Rap therefore
you could say the genre is eclectic. Considering the genre is
eclectic the magazine will appeal to a wide range of audiences.
The genre which is most popular is R&B which has a percentage
of 29% which is obviously featured in Q magazine. Also rock is in
Q magazine which has a popularity of 25% just falling short of
R&B on being the most popular genre in the music industry.
https://infogr.am/Percentage-of-Music-Genre
22. Purpose
The purpose of Q Magazine is to let the new readers know about the
latest music and music news that has just come out. This will then get
people to spread the news about Q magazine and therefore more
people will be attracted to the magazine.
They want to get their magazine across to the public because they
want to be able to sell magazines across the world and in order to do
this, they need to start selling millions of magazines across the
country.
As Q magazine is an eclectic music magazine it covers a wide range of
different genres in the form of interviews and articles. Q’s strapline is
discover great music, this connotes that you can discover various styles
of music if you were to read this magazine, it is also going to be the
very best because it is “great music”.
23. Target Audience
Hartley’s Theory
Age – Q magazine is aiming its magazine at the age range of 15-24. They have aimed there magazine at this age
range because it starts to become more popular as you get older and is already very popular with the older
generations.
Gender – Q magazine is aimed at males, as men are stereotypically believed to like rock music more than
females. Men like this genre of music more as the artists or rock bands or rock artists or mainly male and can
relate to that type of music.
Class – the class of people that Q magazine are aiming there magazine at is the middle class but at the bottom
of the middle class because the ages they aim at are still very young.
Katz
The artists can relate to an artist on the front cover through the clothing that they are wearing this will then
have an impact on more people and therefore more people are going to buy there magazine as they may feel it
suits there style of music for example.
The audience can learn something new as well as this will allow them to read the read the magazine and then
see if it the right magazine for them (the type of music that’s in the magazine, the artists that are in there)
Maslow
By reading the magazine full of celebrities and will be driven by improving their status in society. This is called
social-climbing. This is important in todays society because it gives the audience a sense of confidence and will
this will improve their image and character massively. It allows them to escape reality and let themselves free
into their own world.
Socio-economic
The audience will be very similar to Vibes audience, however there will be a lot more middle management and
adults reading Q magazine, as the artists featured are a lot older. The audience will mostly be in the category.
24. Form and Style
The masthead of the magazine is always at the
top of the page, where the reader can find what
the magazine is called and it will also allow them
to find it easier as it is normally big and bold.
They will want their magazine to stand so they
have put one letter in bold to show what there
magazine name is.
The colour red is used for urgency. This connotes
that it is urgent that the audience need to read it
so that they can take in all the new music news
and news about different artists. This will then
bring a lot of money due to the fact that they’ve
used colours that connote urgency.
25. Frequency
Q magazine is produced monthly for its readers
and has a circulation of 44,050 readers. By
producing a magazine monthly it allows the
editor to gather as much information to ‘inform
and educate’ (Katz) the reader.
26. Website annotations
Q magazines website will contain
links that will allow you to get
round the website quick and will
allow you to read articles that
they have on there.
They will have links that will send
you to there Facebook and Twitter
pages this will then allow you to
follow them and keep up to date
with the latest news that they are
going to bring out.
It allows you to read there latest
issue that they have just brought
out and also read about previous
interviews that they have on their.
