Production Plans
I have made a written plan on everything that needs to be done over a seven week timetable. This
means that it is more likely to be successful magazine. It includes the tasks that needs to be done,
the people, equipment needed and the dates for when we want certain things to be completed.
Budget Summary
This is my budget for my new music magazine “Beats”, it is laid out into sections to clearly show
what everything is going to cost.
It includes all the costs and incomes
For Beats to hire all their Editorial staff members it will cost them a total of £316,930 and for
Advertising staff salaries it will cost a total of £44,700.
For Start –up costs it will cost them £135,000, this includes all recruitment, equipment and office
utensils.
For printing and distribution costs:
To print and distribute 10,000 copies of my magazine per month it would cost a total of £8,900.
This would mean it would cost £0.89p per issue
Total: £106,800 per year
Marketing costs:
Facebook: (£3.00 per month) £36.00

Total Budgeted Costs = £603,821.40

of this is £252,000.
I am also going to have 2 half pages adverts which will cost £8,000. This will also come to £96,000

come to £96,000.

I have found out by selling 10,000 copies of Beats Magazine at £2:50, I plan to make £300,000 in
the first year.
Total Budgeted Income: £984,000.00
Budgeted profit: £380,178.60
Intended Target Audience
There are many media theories that help you to group people in terms of their social needs.
Socio Economic needs
Socio Economic needs/status or demographics are in place to measure or classify an individual or
family’s economic and social position which is based on their education, income and occupation.
When considering my target audience of an indie/rock magazine (BEATS!) they would fall
between D and E. This is because of the fact that they are between the ages of 18 and 25 year old
and they are not yet old enough or not stable to be in very high economic position i.e. have a
social grade of A.
Psychographics
Psychographics is a way of describing or categorizing an audience in groups in terms of their
personality, values, opinions, attitudes, interests and their lifestyle. Here is an example of the
groups used:
The target audience for my music magazine BEATS would fall into “Explorers”. This is because
many explorers are students and young people and my magazine is aimed at those aged between
18- 25 years.
Lifestyle and Spending Power of the reader
What is the lifestyle of my target audience?
• From primary research, such as the market research survey and questionnaires, I found out
that more men than women are interested in a new indie rock magazine, but I would like to
reach out and make it more appealing to women in this age group.
• Aged between 18-25 years old.
• Those who are well educated
• Enjoy listening to indie rock music and also wider subject, for instance films.
What is the spending power of my target audience?
• From all research carried out, I have decided to price my monthly music magazine at £2:99.
This is because it seems like this was the most reasonable price to charge my target
audience every month.
Pre- Production (Mood Board)
I have created a mood board which inspired and helped me to develop my final magazine pages
because I included many bands and artists that belong to the indie/rock genre of my magazine
that I am producing.
Pre- production materials (Brand Identity)
I have chosen to use red, white and black for the colour scheme of my magazine, which is the
same as NME, which was my magazine of inspiration at the beginning of the production process. I
will use the colour scheme on the front cover including the masthead and throughout the
magazine to remind readers what they are consuming.
Pre- production materials (Magazine Flat Plan)
This is my magazine flat plan. It isn’t the full version but you get an idea of what my magazine is
going to include in the first issue and also future issues will follow a similar format/content.
Pre- production materials (Draft Interview)
This is my draft interview with George Ezra for the double page spread. This helped me a lot to
create the final design.
Pre- production materials (Font Styles)
I am going use a Sans Serif font because it is the most suitable one that will fit the purpose of the
genre of my indie rock magazine.
Pre- production materials (Draft Pages and Sketches)
We produced hand drawn drafts of the front cover and DPS for the potential first issue. This
helped guide me, when it came to producing the real thing. Looking back at this and what I have
produced now, a lot has changed. For example on the front cover the promotion of the 4 free
posters is now 2 free tickets to V Festival 2015.
Pre- production (Plan for images that will be the first issue)
This is the original image taken for the front cover of the first issue of my magazine.
These are the original images that I will be using for the DPS interview with George Ezra.
Pre- production (Plan for images that will be the first issue)
We made a plan of where and when the images were going to be taken and the different shot
types that were needed. It was also extremely important that we seeked permission off the artist,
just so we were not crossing any legal boundaries/ breaking the law.
Magazine front cover and DPS
This is my final front page design for the first issue of Beats Magazine. As you can see my
masthead has red bold text with a white stroke affect around the edges and a black shape behind
it. My strapline is beneath my masthead which states “Discover Your Beat” which is short snappy
and catchy, which means that the reader will be drawn in straight away and it will appeal to my
target audience. I have a promotion in the top right hand corner that is competition to win 2 free
tickets to V festival 2015. In the bottom right hand corner, I have my price, barcode and I have
inserted social media links to attract more of my target audience to read my magazine.
This is my final double page spread for the first issue of Beats magazine. I have changed a lot
from what it was like originally. I haven’t managed to keep the original for technical reasons.
However the background was originally white with black text, instead of the black background and
white text that it has now. I have also included a key fact file about George Ezra himself to make it
seem more interesting and yet relaxed. Here you can see I have links of where you can follow
George Ezra on social media sites such as Facebook and twitter. This is a great way of increasing
growth for Beats, but also for bands and artists who want to be heard.
Future issues of Beats Magazine
Later issues of Beats magazine, I am going to include the same type of content i.e. interviews,
album and track reviews, posters, promotions to win tickets to gigs and much more. The only thing
that will be different is the artists and bands included.
Profit and loss breakdown
This is a graph that shows the potential 5 year growth of what I hope my magazine will be making
from magazine sales.
From the first year (beginning of January 2016), I hope to make £300,000 from magazine sales.
From the second year (January 2017) I hope to make £600,000.
From the third year (January 2018) I hope to make £900,000.
From the fourth year (January 2019) I hope to make £120,000
From the fifth year (December 2019/January 2020) I hope to make £150,000
Circulation and readership figures
Between July and December 2013 19,491 copies of NME Magazine was sold both print and digital
versions.
Finally …
I would really like to thank all of you for listening to my pitch and I would really highly appreciate it
if you could give me some feedback. I have sent you all a survey to complete
via Survey Monkey.co.uk
Thanks for listening
