Best Friend || Worst Enemy: WordPress MultisiteTaylor McCaslin
“We’ve all built a ton of WordPress sites. We’ve also managed them all too. You’ve probably heard about WordPress Multisite Networks, and all the awesome things it can (and can’t) allow you to do.
With great power, comes great responsibility. During this talk, Taylor will step through the do’s and don’ts of Multisite Networks. He will share how WordPress Multisite can be your best friend or worst enemy… but usually both… at the same time.”
Learning Outcomes:
Expect pro-tips, eureka moments, and hard lessons learned from his experience setting up and running multisite networks for small private company intranets, all the way to global enterprise brands.
By the end of this talk you will know the pros and cons of WordPress Multisite Networks, best practices for setting up and running a multisite, and know about alternatives if multisite isn’t a fit for your next project.
Presented by Taylor McCaslin at WordCamp Toronto on October 3, 2015.

My talk from WordCamp Raleigh 2014 on managing a large WordPress multisite network.
Supporting lots of standalone instances of WordPress can be a nightmare. Thankfully there is WordPress Multisite. But is it right for you? And what happens when your WordPress network explodes to include thousands of users and sites? At UNC-Chapel Hill our two WordPress multisite networks (self-serve/enterprise) power over 8,000 sites across a wide range of use cases. During this presentation I primarily explore the technical aspects of running a WordPress multisite network, such as scalability, security, user experience, and administrative challenges. I share tips, lessons learned, and ongoing challenges.

8,000 Sites and Counting: Running a *Huge* WordPress ServiceBilly Hylton
Web.unc.edu initially launched in 2009 with the goal of providing an easy-to-use self service blogging platform for UNC's students, faculty and staff. Today, that simple idea has expanded to thousands of websites and is now a collaborative initiative between ITS Web Services and the College of Art and Sciences Information Services (OASIS).
This presentation discusses the rewards and challenges of managing and supporting a large WordPress multisite installation, including overseeing security, support, multi-site updates and the task of staying current in a rapidly changing and evolving web landscape.
Extending WordPress Multisite for Fun and Profit by Angie Meeker at WordPress...Angela Meeker
Creating a network of websites from one WordPress installthat shares themes, plugins and users… and then extending it to create your own WordPress.com, Social Network, Etsy, Treehouse and more. Perfect for entrepreneurs and startups. View Fullscreen.
Fast and furious - this presentation was shared at the March 2013 WordPress Columbus Meetup:
-Quickly and easily replicate standard sites on your network, including the theme, plugins and settings, AND content.
- Use top level domains for all the sites on your network.
-Aggregate content from across your network to your primary site, turning your network into a news beast!
-Turn your Multisite network into a money-making machine by charging for access to your new websites. That's right - once you've turn one Multisite, you're one plugin away from being able to sell those new websites on your network through a paywall. Or, DON'T charge for access for those site, but DO require membership.
-Turn the whole network into your own social network using BuddyPress - imagine a network of websites where each user's posts can contribute to a common feed, and those users can also connect with one another through messaging, profiles, photos... Sounds like Linked In, Facebook, or well... any niche network out today, huh?
-- Turn that same WordPress Multisite installation (without Ecommerce) into an educational powerhouse by giving each of the sites on your network a learning management system (useful for Multisite installation in the K-12 or college context).
-Turn that same WordPress Multisite installation (with or without BuddyPress or the ) into Etsy. Give each of your users their own e-commerce store, and you've got a marketplace. I'll even show you how to take a cut of their sales.
Use these ideas to gain an understanding of the power of Multisite and as a springboard for how WordPress can be extended beyond a simple blogging platform into a tool for generating fun and profit for your business or startup.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.
