Geophysical methods of soil/Foundation testing Pirpasha Ujede
Geophysical methods such as seismic refraction and resistivity testing provide non-invasive subsurface investigation over large areas more quickly and cheaply than traditional boring and testing. However, geophysical results require interpretation and are less definitive. Both methods are important, with geophysical testing used for initial screening and borings to accurately determine soil properties. Seismic refraction uses shock waves to determine layer velocities and depths, while resistivity measures subsurface resistivity variations related to moisture, compaction, and material to infer stratigraphy.
This document discusses various geophysical investigation techniques used to study groundwater resources, with a focus on electrical resistivity and seismic refraction methods. It provides background on why geophysical methods are important for groundwater exploration, noting that they can quickly investigate large areas and provide multipurpose inferences. The electrical resistivity method is explained in detail, including how it works, electrode configurations like Wenner and Schlumberger, and profiling versus sounding approaches. Seismic refraction techniques are also introduced. In conclusion, a variety of geophysical techniques can provide useful information about groundwater occurrence and quality from surface or above-surface locations.
This document provides an overview of geophysical methods used for site investigation and laboratory measurements. It discusses various methods including electrical resistivity, seismic methods, electromagnetic conductivity, gravity geophysical methods, and geothermal methods. For each method, it describes how the technique works and how tests are conducted to collect subsurface data on properties like density, conductivity, and elastic moduli. The document aims to explain different geophysical techniques that can be employed to characterize subsurface conditions.
The document discusses various methods for soil exploration including test trenches, auger borings, rotary drilling, and geophysical methods. It also discusses soil sampling techniques for obtaining both disturbed and undisturbed samples. Common stages in a site investigation are described including desk studies, field investigations, laboratory testing, and reporting. The purpose of soil investigations is to determine subsurface soil conditions to influence foundation design and construction.
This document provides an overview of geophysics and its various applications. It discusses how geophysics studies the physics of the Earth and its atmosphere. Key methods described include seismic reflection and refraction techniques to map subsurface structures. These methods make use of the travel times of seismic waves to determine depths and detect features like faults and folds. The document also outlines how geophysics has various applications in mineral and oil/gas exploration to locate deposits and structures below the surface using physical property measurements.
The document summarizes the stages of a site investigation which includes a desk study, site reconnaissance, detailed exploration and sampling, field/in-situ testing, and laboratory testing. The objectives are to assess suitability, enable adequate design, plan construction, determine ground changes, and document the investigation in a report. Site investigations involve exploring ground conditions through methods like boreholes, trial pits, and geophysical surveys to inform engineering design decisions.
Site investigation involves determining the soil layers and properties beneath a proposed structure. It helps select the foundation type and depth, evaluate load capacity, estimate settlement, and identify potential issues. The exploration program uses methods like test pits, auger and wash borings, probing, and geophysics to obtain samples and measure properties. A site investigation includes planning borings and tests, executing fieldwork, and reporting the findings and recommendations.
This document discusses various geophysical investigation methods used to study subsurface geology. It describes electrical resistivity, seismic refraction, gravity and magnetic methods. Electrical resistivity involves measuring resistivity variations to interpret subsurface rock types and structures. Seismic refraction uses the refraction of seismic waves to determine depth to subsurface layers. Gravity and magnetic methods detect density and susceptibility anomalies respectively to locate subsurface bodies. Geophysical methods provide quick, economical and multi-purpose subsurface exploration without drilling.

A powerful tool used by the Geophysicists
is the Seismic. Natural seismic waves
are generated by the earthquakes. Their
study is very useful to understand the
interior of the Earth.
L’Ipocentro è dove le fratture
delle rocce dentro la Terra
rilasciano l'energia. Due tipi
principali di onde si formano:
The compressive ‘P’ waves are
faster and generally less
destructive than the ‘S’ shear
waves which arrive later.
The Focus is the place inside
the Earth where rock fractures
release energy. Two main
types of waves are generated:

The seismic waves leave the Focus in all
directions at a velocity dependant upon the
properties of the material.
The seismic wave paths are
not strait because generally
the rocks inside the Earth are
not homogeneous.
The ray-path is subject to
reflection and to refraction
effects.
Some secondary waves run
on the surface of the Earth
along the interface between
ground and air, where
there is an abrupt velocity
decrease. The buildings

If a single earthquake
shakes the rocks, they will
end up swinging after
some time. So the sudden

not end shortly after, as
one can see in the figure.
Actually the ground
movements are the
combination of the
sets of oscillations
related to the

The number of seismic
waves that reach the
stations from a single
Earthquake could be
large. In fact there are
many paths that the
waves follow from the
Focus to the recording
station so the ground
could vibrate many hours.
Actually there are waves that are reflected
or are refracted inside the Earth in addition
to the waves mentioned before. Sometimes
it happens that P waves are converted to S
waves and vice versa.
The detailed studies have highlighted the
presence of a sort of concentric layering
inside the Earth related to changes of
acoustic impedance. The three main layers
are: the Crust, the Mantle and the Core.
The S waves are not able to cross the Core
which therefore is believed to be melted.
Il numero di onde
sismiche che raggiungono
le stazioni da un singolo
terremoto potrebbe
essere grande. Infatti ci
sono molti percorsi
dall’ipocentro alla
stazione di registrazione
e quindi il terreno può
vibrare per ore.
In effetti, oltre alle onde menzionate
prima, ci sono onde che si riflettono o
rifrangono all'interno della Terra. A volte
accade che onde P vengano convertite in
onde S e viceversa.
Studi approfonditi hanno evidenziato la
presenza di una sorta di stratificazione
concentrica dentro la Terra dovuta a cambi di
impedenza acustica. I tre strati principali
sono: Crosta, Mantello e Nucleo. Le onde S
non sono in grado di attraversare il Nucleo
che, pertanto, si presume essere fuso.

Comment:
The velocity of the P and S waves increase with
the distance. This happens because when the
distance is higher the rays travel deeper, where
actually higher velocity has been detected.
