The Gravimetric Method detects the
effect of the lateral and vertical changes
in the density of the buried rocks.
Generally the location and geometry of
the buried bodies are obtained from
measurements of the vertical component
of the Earth attraction, or Gravity, on the
Earth surface.
The Gravity (average intensity about
983,000 mgals) is not constant all over
the Globe because the Earth is not a
perfect sphere and it is not made of
omogeneous concentrical layers. In
addition the Earth rotates, so the Gravity
is affected by the centrifugal force.
Il metodo Gravimetrico rileva l'effetto
delle variazioni laterali e verticali nella
densità delle rocce sepolte.
Generalmente la posizione e geometria
dei corpi sepolti sono ottenuti da misure
della componente verticale dell’attrazione
terrestre, o Gravità, sulla superficie
terrestre.
omogenei. Inoltre la Terra ruota, quindi la
Gravità è influenzata dalla forza
centrifuga.

Effects that reduce the gravity
from the pole to the equator :
- increase of the distance
from the Earth’s centre.
- increase of the centrifugal
force.
Effect that increases the Gravity
from the pole to the equator:
- increase of the mass.
Contribution: approx + 5000 mgals
The actual difference between pole
and Equator is about 5300 mgals

The Gravity is subject also to external forces,
mainly due to the attraction of the Sun and
the Moon, that produce the sea tides.
They induce also Earth tides on the ground.
The amplitude of the Earth tide is much
smaller (few inches) than the sea tide.
Variations induced by the tides to the Gravity
are very small (0.2-0.3 mgals), but can be
recorded by the gravimeters that are very
sensitive.

The elevation of the recording point affects
the measured Gravity. The height difference
between The highest mountain and the
deepest ocean contributes about 3000
mgals.
The presence of mountains close to the
measure point reduces the Gravity because
their mass attracts upwards. Also the
presence of valleys reduces the Gravity
because of the mass reduction downward.
profondo oceano contribuisce circa 3000
mgals.
massa attira verso l'alto.

An additional correction (Bouguer) is
applied to shift the elevation of the stations
towards a common Datum plane. This
usually is the mean sea level (MSL). This
surface is called Geoid and connects all the
points having the same gravitational
potential. It is the mean surface of the
oceans that is everywhere horizontal by
definition.

A set of corrections are applied to the
gravity measurements to take into account
the above mentioned factors.
superficie è detta Geoide e collega tutti i
punti che hanno lo stesso potenziale
gravitazionale. E’ la superficie media degli
oceani che è ovunque orizzontale per
definizione.
