The differences among the
various theories of the internal
structure of the Globe are mainly
related to the dynamic and the
evolution of the solid Earth

QUESTION:
What could be inside the Moon?
1 Data:
The Moon's diameter is 3,476 Km.
The Moon's mass is 7.35 x 10
22
kg
2 Computations:
The radius is = 3,476 Km / 2 = 1738 Km
The mass is 7.35 x 1022 kg = 7.35 x 1025 g
The volume is = 4/3 x 3.141 x (1738 Km)3
= 22 x 109 Km3 = 2.2 x 1025 cm3
The moon’s density is =
7.35 x 1025 g / 2.2 x 1025 cm3 = 3.34 g/cm3
DOMANDA:
Cosa ci sarà dentro la Luna ?
1 Dati:
Il diamentro dell Luna è 3,476 Km.
La massa della Luna è 7.35 x 10
22
kg
2 Calcoli:
Il raggio è = 3,476 Km / 2 = 1738 Km
La massa è = 7.35 x 1022 kg = 7.35 x 1025 g
Il volume è = 4/3 x 3.141 x (1738 Km)3
= 22 x 109 Km3 = 2.2 x 1025 cm3
La densità della Luna è =
7.35 x 1025 g / 2.2 x 1025 cm3 = 3.34 g/cm3

3 Preliminary Interpretation
The Moon total density is lower than the
Earth density. But it is higher than the density
of the rocks on the surface of the Earth.
Evidence from pictures and public domain
information on the Moon surface show that
rocks are similar to the Earth ones.
So there should be denser rocks inside the
Moon, but one should not expect a big and
heavy Core like the one inside the Earth.
2a UNITA’ - Geofisica Planetaria 2nd UNIT – Planetary Geophysics
4 Additional information
- No magnetic field.
So the Iron core is doubtfull.
- Seismic study of moonquakes indicates
a crust about 65 km thick.
- Focus of moonquakes can be very deep
(up to 1000 km) so the rocks are brittle
till that depth.
3 Interpretazione preliminare
- Studi sismici sui terremoti lunari indicano
una Crosta spessa circa 65 km.
- Gli Ipocentri dei terremoti lunari possono
essere molto profondi (1000 km) quindi le
rocce sono rigide fino a quella profondità.

Possible model
- Crust (50 km).
- Hard Mantle,
(Lithosphere) to
the depth of
about 1250 km.
- Soft Mantle
(Asthenosphere)
about 150 Km of
thickness.
- Core
about 300 km
in radius
(otherwise it
would make the
average density
of the Moon too
high).
2a UNITA’ - Geofisica Planetaria 2nd UNIT – Planetary Geophysics
Modello possibile
- Crosta (50 km).
- Mantello solido,
(Litosfera) fino
alla profondità di
circa 1250 km.
- Mantello soffice
(Astenosfera)
spessore circa
150 km.
- Nucleo
circa 300 km
di raggio
(altrimenti la
densità media
della Luna
sarebbe troppo
alta.
