Bartholin’s Gland
Function :
The production of mucoid secretion that lubricates the
distal end of the vagina during intercourse.
The glands become active after menarche and are non
palpable.
Bartholinitis
Causative agent:
Gonococcus
Streptococcus
Staphylococcus
E. coli
End result :
Complete resolution
Recurrence
Abscess
Cyst formation
Clinical features :
Local pain discomfort.
Difficulty in walking / sitting.
Examination :
Tenderness
Induration of post half of vagina.
Secretion coming out from the duct when pressed.
Treatment
Local :
Systemic:
Ampicillin 500 mg TDS
Bartholin’s Abscess
End result of acute Bartholinitis.
Clinical features:
Severe local pain and discomfort.
Difficult / painful walking and sitting.
On examination:
Unilateral tender swelling.
Oedomatous red overlying skin.
Treatment:
Rest.
Sitz bath.
Systemic antibiotic Ampicillin 500 mg.
Drainage of abscess.

The content is colourless glairy liquid.
C/f :
Small cyst : usually unnoticed.
Larger cyst : Local discomfort and dyspareunia.
Examination:
Unilateral swelling on post half of labia majora.
Projection on vulval cleft into S-shape.
Overlying skin is shiny and thin.
Cyst remains non tender and fluctuant.
Treatment:
Marsupilisation.

A discrete spherical swelling at the umbilicus
Contents are usually fat and omentum
A large hernial sac may contain intestinal loops
Sac formed by the skin fibrous tissue and peritonium
A circular or oval hernial ring can be palpated
without any pain if contents are reduisable
Presents of adhesion or umbilical abscess
Contents may get strangulated with pain and
intestinal obstruction

SURGICAL TREATMENT:
An elliptical incision is made through each side of the
swlleing
Prepare surgical area and anesthesia done by lidocaine HCL
2% follow up with the pre medicant of atropine and xylazine
Animal is controlled in dorsal recumbency after fasting of 24
hours

Suture should be starting from the center towards the each
commissures
The sac is incised just above the ring and the ring
scratched and closed by placing a series of overlapping
mattress suture
The skin is dissected and discarded then a stab incision is
made on the hernial sac and is checked for adhesion

washed with normal saline and Sulphar drug used on the
operation sight after suture.
T he skin flaps are apposed my mattress or simple
interrupted sutures using non absorbable materials
