Ujjwala Yojana is a social welfare scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016 that aims to provide LPG connections to below poverty line households to replace unclean cooking fuels. It seeks to protect women's health, empower them, and reduce health hazards and pollution caused by burning fossil fuels for cooking. Eligible women applicants must be over 18, hold a BPL card, have a bank account, and not be listed in the SECC 2011 data or hold another LPG connection. The scheme is funded through LPG subsidy savings and has a budget of Rs. 8000 Crore over three years to distribute connections to 1.5 Crore families.
