Mary Ainsworth conducted research in Uganda and Baltimore that identified different types of attachment in infants. Her naturalistic observation of mother-infant relationships in Uganda found that some infants were securely attached and confidently explored their environment. Ainsworth concluded that securely attached infants used their mothers as a secure base. Her subsequent Baltimore Study observed American mothers and their infants to further study differences in attachment behaviors.
