Introduction After the signing of the Convention on Biological Diversity in the United Nations
Congress on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, a number of development
projects addressing the theme of biodiversity has considerably increased. Many of these projects
have been channeled through the Global Environment Facility (GEF) or other international
agencies. Also, many bilateral projects have seen light. In the aftermath of the signing of the
Convention the Peruvian Government approached the Finnish Government in 1995 with a
proposal of a technical assistance project to assess the biological diversity of Peruvian Amazonia
and to assist Peru in developing a national strategy for conservation and sustainable use of
biodiversity in that region a requirement of the Convention. This request was a result of a long
term research engagement between Peru and Finland through institutional cooperation between
Peruvian institutions and universities and the University of Turku in Finland. This cooperation
had already produced valuable new insights to assessment of biodiversity in Peruvian Amazonia
(Kalliola et al. 1993, Tuomisto et al. 1995, Ruokolainen et al. 1997, Kalliola Flores 1998). The

Candide, a story written by Voltaire, is a travel literature that takes away women s freedom. This
story talks about the concept of optimism in the characters lives. According to Margaret A. Boden
a man may make no claims, but merely (habitually) describe situations in a positive rather than a
negative way, and the question of justification may not even arise (A. Boden). Women in this story
fail to accept the principle of optimism. This is because everything in their lives is not for the best

The director uses colour and body language to suggest that Shrek is a kind ogre. For example the

After Shrek has planted the sign in the ground it shows the villagers going to try and hunt Shrek.

To Kill a Mockingbird is about a little girl named Jean Louise Finch, called Scout, and her

Ewell tries to kill Scout and Jem as they re walking home at night. They were shouting loudly,

This report investigates animal is cosmetic testing. The introduction outlines the focus of this
report, the history of animal testing and presenting relevant case studies to illustrate the issue. The
discussion provides in depth information about animal testing by presenting two sides of the story.
The conclusion will highlight the main points learned to help decide if animal experiments are,
indeed, necessary.
Methodology:
Searching online became useful for secondary sources. Websites such as BUAV (British Union for
the Abolition of Vivisection), which offered a useful timeline, like the Cruelty Free International
campaign and how these actions contributed to stopping animal testing in the EU. Cruelty Free
International is supported by a number of celebrities including Ricky Gervais and Sir Paul
McCartney. PeTA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) provided information about the
types and alternatives of testing. The website also listed alternatives to animal testing, such as the
Human skin models, which are considered in this report.
News articles by the BBC were very helpful when considering the pros and cons of animal testing.
A blog by The Beauty Brains provided a scientist s opinion. Social networks e.g. Facebook and
YouTube offered access to video campaigns and the public s opinions.
