Monasticism began when individuals left civilization in late Roman times to live alone in remote areas as ascetics closer to God. Saint Benedict formalized monastic life with rules for western monks, dividing each day between prayer, reading, manual labor and sleep. Monks lived simply, taking vows of poverty, obedience, and chastity while devoting their lives to prayer, work, and spreading Christianity. Their monasteries became centers of farming, education, invention, and beautiful architecture that helped preserve knowledge and shape medieval Europe.

Monasticism began in the 4th century AD as Christians sought a life of extreme asceticism and devotion to spiritual work by renouncing worldly pursuits. Early monastics lived as hermits in the Egyptian desert, but around 320AD Pachomius established the first organized Christian monasteries where monks lived and worshipped together in community. Benedict further developed monastic organization in the 6th century with his influential Benedictine Rule, establishing standards for monastic life and labor. While monasticism helped preserve Christianity and spread missions after the fall of Rome, some argue it promoted an unbiblical view of humanity by seeing the soul as chained to the flesh.
The Medieval Church
Constantine the Great was the first Roman emperor to become Christian. He enforced correct Christian practice and after his death in 337, Byzantium was renamed Constantinople. Five special bishops had authority over church leaders, including the bishops of Rome, Alexandria, Antioch, Constantinople, and Jerusalem, and they argued over who was most powerful. The Christian church eventually split into the East and West branches.
Role of the Church in Medieval Europe
The church played a central role in medieval Europe. It was the most important institution, providing religious and social leadership during unstable times. The clergy owned a third of European land, making the church the largest landholder. The church also collected tithes and was generally responsible for record keeping. There were often power struggles between the Pope and kings. The church taught that receiving the seven sacraments was essential for salvation. Christians also expressed their faith through pilgrimages, art/architecture like cathedrals, and monastic life devoted to religion.
CHAPTER 5 MONASTICISM, SCHOLASTICISM, CHIVALRY, THE GUILD SYSTEM OF EDUCATION
This chapter discusses the medieval concept of spiritual, intellectual, political, and economic education through monasticism, scholasticism, chivalry, and the guild system. Monastic education focused on spiritual and moral development through prayer, reading, and manual labor. Scholasticism used logic and reason to analyze religious teachings. Chivalric education trained young nobles in combat, courtesy, and gallantry. Guilds provided vocational training through apprenticeships and promoted their respective crafts and trades. Overall, these systems emphasized religious piety, intellectual pursuits, and practical skills during the Middle Ages.

- 4. Peer discussion (individuals asked to defend their answer), At the beginning of a lecture: have students done the required preparation?
- Turning Point also integrates into Blackboard, the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (eLat are currently testing and trailing the Powerlink). The benefit lies in sharing student achievement data (grades are added to the Gradebook and Participant lists drawn from integration with Campus Solution) between the student response system and the VLE. (Note: Turning Point also works effectively with a whiteboard.) When writing your questions, make sure your slides are clear and easy to read. Think about the students at the back of the class - will they be able to read your questions? Changing font sizes and removing unnecessary clutter from your slides will make your lecture run more smoothly.
