Quality Control and Quality Assurance

In the 1920s, quality control emerged to ensure engineering requirements were met in products. In the 1950s, quality assurance and auditing expanded the profession to include independent verification. In the 1980s, total quality management principles were developed to apply quality practices to all company processes.
Quality assurance aims to prevent defects by improving processes, while quality control aims to identify defects in finished products. Quality assurance is a proactive process while quality control is reactive.
