2. What is Trefoil?
• Trefoil is a dental implant surgical protocol for
the lower (mandibular) arch developed by
Nobel Biocare.
• The process includes placing 3 implants using
analog guided surgery in a precise location so
that a pre-fabricated titanium bar wrapped in
acrylic and teeth can be placed within 1 week
of dental implant surgery.

5. HOW THE TREFOIL SYSTEM DIFFERS
FROM OTHER IMPLANTS
• Individual implants may not always be successful,
and can loosen or fall out. The Trefoil system only
involves three screws placed into the jaw structure,
reducing this risk.
• Other types of implants with some similarities to
the Trefoil system do not have the adaptive joint
feature. As a result, those systems are rigid, and
misalignment can lead to serious problems

7. PROCEDURE STEPS
• The pre-manufactured titanium bar in the
Trefoil system is not only more effective, it
reduces total treatment time.
• First, the titanium bar is placed on the jaw.
• It is affixed with three specialized dental
screws.
• The surgery requires approximately one to
two hours. After the titanium bar is in place,
the prosthesis is attached.

The pre-manufactured framework, anatomically designed
for the natural arch of the mandible, contains adaptive
joints that adjust to compensate for horizontal, vertical
and angular deviations from the ideal implant position
and enable the passive fit of the definitive prosthesis

11. Is 3 dental implants better than 4 dental
implants?
• Palo Malo, the creator of the All-on-4®
concept, originally investigated his protocol
for a 3 implant system, yet it was changed to
a 4 implant system.
• PI Branemark created the Novum implant
system – a 3-implant system with a 95% or
higher dental implant survival rate.

12. • The Trefoil system now uses a 5.0 mm
diameter implant vs. a 4.3mm diameter
which the All-on-4® uses.
• According to Palo Malo, the number of
implants does not make an impact;
instead, the size of the implants is
important.

13. TIME Requirement
• Surgery - 1.5 to 3 hours
• Restorative - 1 to 2 hours
• Laboratory - 5 to 6 Hour

14. Who is a candidate?
Patients with V shaped jaws, narrow jaw bone,
challenging anatomical structures might not be a
candidate for Trefoil.
Ability to maintain oral hygiene
Jawbone height – 13 mm
Jawbone width – 6-7 mm
Older adults whose jaw have been fully
developed
