Dental implants can successfully replace missing teeth. There are several types of implants that can be used depending on a patient's jawbone health and needs. The implant procedure may involve one or two stages, and temporary or permanent teeth can be attached. Regular cleaning and checkups are important for implant care. Implant treatment options should be discussed during a consultation to determine the best approach.
2. IMPLANT DENTISTRY
Implant dentistry is a boon for restoration of missing
teeth. It overcomes many disadvantages of other
conventional methods of restoration i.e.
With removable prosthesis
With fixed prosthesis
IMPLANTATION is defined as an insertion of any
object or material, which is allopathic in nature
either partially or completely into the body for
therapeutic, experimental, diagnostic, or prosthetic
purposes.
3. ADVANTAGES OF DENTAL IMPLANTS
To overcome the drawbacks of removable prosthesis
Bone maintenance of height and width
Ideally aesthetic tooth positioning
Improved psychological health
Increased stability in chewing
Increased retention
Eliminates the need to involve adjacent teeth
4. USES AND TYPES OF DENTAL IMPLANT
DENTISTRY
TYPES:-
ENDOSTEAL IMPLANTS- dental implants are placed in
the jawbone. Typically made of titanium and shaped like
a small screw, they are most common used implants.
SUBPERIOSTEAL IMPLANTS- These implants are placed
under gum but on or above the jawbone. This type of
implants may be used in-patient who do not have
enough healthy natural jaw bone and cannot or do not
want to undergo bone augmentation procedures to
rebuilt the bone.
USES:-
Individual teeth are replaced with implants where it’s
difficult to distinguish the real teeth from prosthetic teeth.
Movement in lower denture can be decreased by implants
with ball and socket retention.
Bridge can be supported by two or more implants.
In orthodontics small diameter dental implants referred as
temporary anchorage device can assist in tooth movement.

6. DENTAL IMPLANT PLACEMENT TECHNIQUES
Depending on the health of your jawbone and your specific needs, your implant dentist can suggest you
either of the following implant techniques:
1) TWO STAGE DENTAL IMPLANT PROCEDURE
2) IMMEDIATE LOAD DENTAL IMPLANT PROCEDURE
3) MINI DENTAL IMPLANTS
4) ALL- ON- 4 IMPLANTS
5) ZYGOMATIC IMPLANTS
7. TWO STAGE DENTAL IMPLANT PROCEDURE
In this procedure dental implant is placed in jaw at 1st sitting and then advised to wait for 3-4 months.
After 3-4 months, second stage implant loading procedure is started. In this stage, the prosthetic part i.e.
crown is attached to the dental implant after suitable impression making and lab procedures.
8. IMMEDIATE LOAD DENTAL IMPLANT
PROCEDURE
This technique is also called as same day
implants or teeth in a day. This procedure
allows the placement of temporary
tooth/teeth during the same appointment as
your dental implant placement.
9. MINI DENTAL IMPLANTS
MINI DENTAL IMPLANTS Also called small
narrow diameter implants. These implants
are narrower than most commonly used
implants. These are used primarily to stabilize
lower denture and to give support for
temporary fixing of teeth before final
prosthesis in full mouth cases.
10. ALL- ON- 4 IMPLANTS
ALL- ON- 4 IMPLANTS is an alternative to placing a
top or bottom set of replacement teeth called full
arch. Four dental implants are placed in available
bone avoiding need for bone grafting. Special
multiunit abutments are used.
11. ZYGOMATIC IMPLANTS
ALL- ON- 4 IMPLANTS is an alternative to placing a top or
bottom set of replacement teeth called full arch. Four dental
implants are placed in available bone avoiding need for
bone grafting. Special multiunit abutments are used.
Nowadays, different types of implants are available in the market based on the material such as:
• METALLIC
• CERAMIC AND CERAMIC COATED
• POLYMER
• CARBON COMPOND
12. CARE AND COST OF DENTAL IMPLANTS
COST OF DENTAL IMPLANTS:-
Cost varies from case to case depending upon the
implant system being used and the individual needs
of the patient. If a patient requires additional
procedures such as bone grafting, ridge split, sinus
lift, bone expansion etc, the cost of implant
placement procedures may increase. Cost also
depends on the brand of implant system being
used.
CARE OF DENTAL IMPLANTS:-
• Brush after eating and before bedtime around the
implant.
• Floss at least once to twice a day.
• Use of oral irrigation devises such as WATERPIK to flush
out loose debris from around the implants.
• See your dentist for regular checkups.
