Transgenic organisms have had their genomes artificially modified through the introduction of foreign DNA, while cloned organisms are genetically identical to the parent organism. There are several methods for creating transgenic and cloned organisms, including microinjection of DNA, use of embryonic stem cells or retroviruses, and somatic cell nuclear transfer. While transgenic organisms can be used to improve crops and livestock, the creation of cloned organisms and their health and traits can be unpredictable due to challenges with genetic reprogramming. Both techniques remain areas of ongoing research.
