The Toulmin Model is a tool for diagramming informal arguments. It was developed by Stephen Toulmin, a British logician frustrated with the inability of formal logic to explain everyday arguments. The model identifies three basic elements in an argument: the claim, grounds (evidence/data), and warrant (unstated connection between claim and grounds). Grounds support the claim, while the warrant links the grounds to justify the claim. The model can analyze arguments, but provides a static view that may not reflect real-life arguments where elements are not always clear.
