A contactor is an electrically controlled switch used for switching electrical power circuits. It has three main components - contacts to carry current, an electromagnet to close the contacts, and an insulating enclosure. Contactors are designed to directly connect to high-current loads over 15 amps or several kilowatts. They use contact protection like air or vacuum to extinguish arcs that occur during opening and closing of contacts and degrade the contacts over time. Contactors are rated based on load current, fault withstand, duty cycle, voltage, and coil voltage.
