Micro ID for Problem-Based and Game-Based Learning
Instructional design is both a process (macro) and a strategy (micro). Micro instructional design models should provide a formula for designing user experience, engagement and interaction that supports learning. Join this online session to explore David Merrill’s Pebble in the Pond (PiP) instructional design model for problem-based learning and consider how it can also be applied to game-based learning design.
Micro-learning (micro learning, microlearning) is an emerging learning strategy that involves delivery of content to learners in form of highly focused bite-sized units. It is the next-gen training for a new generation of workforce. Known for its ability to quickly close skill and knowledge gaps, micro-learning is being adopted by organizations globally.
This presentation is NIIT’s micro take on micro-learning and provides glimpses on basic implementation principles and the advantages of micro-learning, some examples and use cases along with potential barriers and a micro-learning road-map for your organization.
Your voice is far more powerful for student learning than some videos on YouTube. Come to this session to learn how to create, edit, and host quick, free educational and engaging videos!

Is it easy to walk into a traditional classroom and measure engagement? Depending on how you defined engagement, you could find several different ways to determine if students are engaged in the learning process. Look around – how many participatge, raise their hands, on task, level of academic achievement, ability to collaborateNevertheless, over the last two decades there has been significant growth in the awareness of and the ability to assess student engagement. But how can you measure student engagement when it comes to the use of technology? Can you simply walk in a room and assess how engaged students are by whether or not they have technology in their hands. Our natural inclination as educators would be to view hands on activities as one of the best indicators of engagement. For example, if you were to see several students using iPod touches and collaborating with each other, you would might assume that the students are highly engaged, the same as you would if the students were using math manipulatives. However, while these students may be engaged, it is hard to qualify the degree of engagement. While using technology may be engaging in and of it self, it is important to evaluate the level of engagement and its role in the learning process.
You are still the driving force in the classroom. You are the catalyst for your student’s learning.
How do we tie in technology to the pedagogy of teaching? The Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy places emphasis upon its use as a “ more authentic tool for curriculum planning, instructional delivery and assessment.” This new taxonomy reflects a more active form of thinking and is perhaps more accurate. With the advance of technology into our lives and particularly into education , we started to talk about new emerging skills and competences that Bloom’s first taxonomy did not include. Below is a diagram i have created to include these new skills which corresponds to the 21st century learning.
