Transportation System
Name: Instructor: Course: Date: Definition A transportation system can be referred to as the
logistics and the equipments used in moving passengers as well as goods from one place to
another. It covers travelling by all types of transport, from buses to cars and to boats, space travel
as well as aircrafts. Transportation methods are employed in groups movement planning and
logistics, in addition to running local schools bus services (Gerdes, 2008). Function of the

A well organized transportation system decreases overheads, while a disorganized transportation
system increases expenditures (Gerdes, 2008). The effects of transportation are not at all times
anticipated, and can include unintended or unforeseen impacts like congestion. Transport as
well carries a vital environmental and social load that cannot be ignored. The additional values
along with employment impacts of transport services generally extend past employment as well
as added value created by that activity; indirect impacts are most important. For instance,
transportation firms buy a fraction of their effort from local dealers. The manufacturing of these
inputs creates additional value added as well as job opportunities in the local market. The sellers
in turn buy goods and services from other local companies. There are added rounds of local re
spending that produce additional value added in addition to employment. In the same way, homes
that get revenue from jobs created in transport activities use some of their earnings on local
supplies as well as services. These acquisitions result in extra local employment and added value.
A number of of the household earnings from these additional jobs is subsequently used up on local
commodities and services, thus creating more jobs as well as income for local homes. Because of
these consecutive rounds of

The Story Of An Hour And A Pair Of Silk Stockings By Kate...
Chopin Expresses Feminine Repression Authors often have their own literary repertoire, or
style, to appeal to the audience in which they are writing to. Kate Chopin is a well known writer,
known for her works that mainly focus around women and their expected roles in society.
Chopin s writings are often based on the effect that the turn of the century had on women, which
she best expresses in her two short stories The Story of an Hour and A Pair of Silk Stockings . In
both of the stories previously stated, the author gives the audience just enough background on
the main characters, both female, and their trapped everyday life; so that throughout each story,
the reader can connect and better understand the author s purpose. By using literary elements,
Kate Chopin does an outstanding job of relating to the audience with the realism of feminism.
Kate Chopin uses elements such as setting, tone, and irony in her short stories The Story of an
Hour and A Pair of Silk Stockings to express her ideas concerning societal expectations of women
in the 1800 s. Writers use many literary elements to help connect to their stories; Kate Chopin
does an excellent job of doing so by using tone. Webster s Dictionary defines tone as a general
character or attitude or situational piece of writing . In Chopin s A Story of an Hour , she uses a
dramatic death to set a depressing tone. The anxiety and overwhelming wave of feelings that comes
over the audience when reading about

Slavery During The 19th Century

Slavery in 17th Century VS Slavery in the late 19th Century Many people view slavery as one
consecutive time period where African Americans were captured and kept to serve the needs of
Caucasian individuals and families. But not very many people know the true extent of slavery
among the colonies. Less are aware of the nature in which slavery evolved from a trading
industry in the 17th century into its greater known state of forced labor in the 19th century.
When most people hear the word slave, they picture an African American held in bondage by an
English slave holder. While this may be an accurate description for many cases, a lot of different
ethnic groups would paint a different picture. When the Spanish first came to America, they saw
the natives as their tickets to the riches of the new world. As their greed for wealth and
agricultural demand rose, the demand for slaves also began to increase. Although, as time began
to reveal, the Spaniards also found it hard to keep the native slaves because many of them had
allies and since they were native to the land, they knew it pretty well enough to escape. African
enslavement really started when the Spaniards began to seek for slaves that were foreign to the
land and would survive their harsh treatment and foreign diseases (McDougal 77). As early as
1619, a Dutch ship carried the first Africans to Virginia, but it would not be until the 1680s that

Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge
Near the small town of San Antonio, NM is a spectacular display of one of nature s finest
balanced beauty and wilderness paradise, Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, situated
on the northern edge of the Chihuahuan desert and straddling the Rio Grande. Fitting is the
name Bosque del Apache, meaning woods of the Apache, a reminder of the Apache peoples of
long ago who lived along the Rio Grande. The 57,331 acre refuge was established in 1939 by
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, an effort aimed to preserve the area as a wildlife habitat.
The nucleus of the refuge is 7,000 acres of flood plain, an extensive area of wetlands and
farmlands. Arid foothills and towering mesas ascend to the Chupadera Mountains and the San
Pascual Mountains, giving shape to a landscape that captivates. Remnants of a lost civilization are
evident in the petroglyphs in the region, along with stone tools and other artifacts. The Piro
Indians that lived in the valley at least 700 years ago, hunted, fished, and farmed the land. Today,
the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge protects the ruins that tell their story. It continues
to be a magnet for human migration along its corridor, and provides shelter for a diversity of
wildlife that creates incredible sounds and sights that are awe inspiring.... Show more content on

Walt Disney Creating A Sense Of Nostalgia Essay
Creating a Sense of Nostalgia
Walt Disney s remarkable legacy that he s left behind includes all of his creations through the 20th
century. His cartoon films and theme parks have targeted a young audience and most of us can
recall watching Disney movies at a young age according to Barrier, Practically everyone knows
Disney the corporation, the movies, the theme parks... or going to Disneyland or Walt Disney
World for the first time when we were little (Barrier 152). Sometimes we get caught up in a
hectic life and we lose sight of our own happiness. Revisiting these old times such as watching a
Disney movie that you used to at a young age or spending some time in one of Walt s theme
parks brings a sense of nostalgia. For a brief moment you are taken back and remember that life
is not so bad and you are emerged in happiness. Typically, we tend to have good memories
connected with those films or theme parks, because as a child, responsibilities and worries didn t
exist yet and times were much simpler.

Violance in Video Games Essay
Violence
Most of the time violence is considered as the worst when it comes to the bad effects of video
games. A scientific survey (Anderson Bushman, 2001) has found a connection between aggressive
behaviors and playing violent games where more the children play violent games, more tend be
aggressive in behavior. Not only that but also they are more likely to have aggressive feelings and
thoughts plus diminished aiding. It is said that the impact of playing violent games in children is
compounded by the intuitive/interactive nature of the games. Children are remunerated for being

The Challenges Of Veterans With Disabilities
This research paper will discuss the challenges and opportunities that veterans with disabilities
encounter when transitioning from the Military into the civilian workplace. Currently, there are
more than 6 million veterans in the United States with a disability. A veteran is defined as a person
who has served or is serving in the United States Armed Forces. While reintegrating the veterans
back into the workplace, veterans with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD), and Physical
Disabilities will be one of the greatest challenges that any agency will encounter. This will require
that organizations prepare and implement procedures to make special accommodations to assist the
Veteranwhile following the federally mandated guidelines. Moreover, this will allow
organizations to employee and empower America s bravest men and women; hiring a veteran
brings valuable skills and knowledge into the workplace. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder is defined
as a debilitating psychological condition triggered by a major event such as war, a terrorist act, or
a catastrophic event. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs there are over 2.3 million
American Veterans of the Irag and Afghanistan wars, with at least 20 % of them having a
documented case of PTSD. Additionally, it is presumed that about 50% of the Veterans who
actually have PTSD do not seek treatment. Statistics show that of the 61% of men who experience
trauma only 8% actually develop PTSD, versus the 51% of woman who

Who Is Bonnie And Clyde A Victim Of Crime
In the early nineteen hundreds, crime was a big problem. There were several criminals on the
loose. Such as Pretty boy Floyde, Baby face Nelson, Al Capone, Machine gun Kelly, and so on.
But in the South there was a couple that rampaged through Texas. They were Bonnie and Clyde
and they were the fear of the public in the South. They robbed, kidnapped and murdered. This is
Bonnie and Clyde.
Clyde Barrow was born in Telico, Texas in the year 1910. Clyde s family moved to Dallas in the
1920s. They were very poor and lived in a slum where crime was rampant. Clyde got into trouble
right away. His first arrest was when he didn t return a rental car on time. His second arrest was
for stealing turkeys. In the late 1920s, Clyde had good jobs but he ... Show more content on

Bonnie and Clyde spent almost all their time together. When Clyde went to jail in Waco, Bonnie
smuggled a gun into the prison and busted Clyde out on March 8. When Bonnie and Clyde took
off to Ohio, Clyde got caught and extradited to Texas. While in jail, he received a fourteen year
prison sentence for hard labor. Clyde got transferred to Eastham prison. In 1932 of February,
Clyde got paroled and his family and friends said he wasn t the same guy when he came out. It
was claimed that Clyde was beaten regularly while he was in prison and it made him hate the
Eastham prison. According to some people it was said Clyde didn t care about the money, he
wanted revenge on the Texas prison system for how he was treated. One month later, Bonnie and
Clyde made a gang consisting of Bonnie and Clyde, Ray Hamilton, WD Jones, Henry Methvin,
Buck Barrow, and his wife Blanche Barrow.
With their gang, Bonnie and Clyde began many robberies with the goal of getting enough
money and guns to launch a jailbreak at Eastham prison to get Clyde s revenge. Bonnie and
Fults got caught in a hardware store robbery in Texas and they got sent to jail. Bonnie got out of
jail for saying she was kidnapped and had to rob the hardware store. In two weeks Bonnie and
Clyde were together and on the run again. On August of 1932, Clyde and his gang had been
drinking which was illegal back then. Two officers approached them but soon after they were both

Poetry Of Yeats s Poetry
Personally, I would have to strongly disagree with this statement as I find his poems interesting
and comprehensible. Right from the onset, Yeats became one of my favourite poets as I admire
his unique style and impressive language skills. I believe that his poems are a reflection of his
own life... An interesting and influential one that faced rejection from Maude Gonne, creating the
Abbey theatre in Dublin and winning the Nobel Prize for literature in 1923. I feel that he
captures a calm atmosphere in his nature poems using onomatopoeia and with a unique style
which draws me in as a reader. Yeats also portrays a powerful message in his political poems and
conveys his thoughts and emotions when he utilises clever similes coupled with alliteration or
assonance. The poems that I have studied are The Lake Isle of Innisfree , The Wild Swans at
Coole , An Irish Airman Foresees His Death , September 1913 and Sailing to Byzantium... Show

He uses repetition which creates emphasis on what he is trying to convey. This is evident when
he opens with the line I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree . Yeats flaunts his poetic skills
once more through a rhyming pattern at the end of every second line. made...glade , slow...glow
etc. Also, I feel that Yeats depicts the core theme of the poem through vibrant imagery. The Lake
Isle of Innisfree is about an island that he finds personal solace on in Lough Gill and he
remarkably conveys this through conjuring the most vivid images possible and paints a picture
for me. This is evident when he states There midnight s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow
and I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore . Therefore, I firmly believe that Yeats
unique yet simple style lucidly conveys the main theme of this poem

Examples Of Figurative Language In The Great Gatsby
In the novel, The Great Gatsby, the author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, employs different types of figurative
language to construct representations of the motifs and to help enhance them. F. Scott Fitzgerald
wrote novels and short stories during the Jazz Age in American History. He had led a tough life
and gone through two relationships prior to his wife, Zelda. Both Zelda and Fitzgerald started
falling apart when they turned to drinking and partying and eventually, she was admitted to an
insane asylum. Shortly after, he decided to write, The Great Gatsby, which was staged around his
life. In this novel, Fitzgerald parallels himself around two of the main male characters, Jay Gatsby
and Nick Carraway. He tells about his life and of his closest acquaintances... Show more content on

For example, while Nick is at Gatsby s party, he starts to describe what he sees. Most of the
things that Nick says are examples of symbolism. In this example, Nick states, In his blue
gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and
the stars. (Fitzgerald, 39). Since a simile is the comparison using the words like or as , the
example present is comparing the man and the girls who enjoy Gatsby s party, much like moths
enjoy the light. This is a quote describing the people because it means they didn t show up to
meet with Gatsby, but, in fact, they are only present for the party. In the next example,
Fitzgerald is developing the character, Jay Gatsby, by showing his wealth through the narrator,
Nick Carraway. Again, Nick Carraway is describing what he sees which is Gatsby s station
wagon scampered like a brisk yellow bug to meet all trains. (Fitzgerald, 39). The example
displayed above indicates how similar a station wagon is to a brisk yellow bug and how alike they
behave. To summarize, Fitzgerald incorporated similes as a type of figurative language in The
Great Gatsby to describe both the setting and the characters throughout the

American vs. Italian culture: worlds apart
By definition, culture is a combination of collectively shared traits, values and traditions that
distinguish one human group from another (Hofstede, 1991). Thus culture is in essence that heart
and spirit that makes each country and its people unique and different. And in that sense, America
and Italy are literally at the opposite sides of nearly every aspect of culture. Being an Italian
American, I have grown in a family where these two opposites meet and blend together. Albeit the
differences of these two cultures are nearly innumerable, the most commonly recognized and

Hall (1983, pp.42 54): monochronic (US) vs. polychronic (Italy). That means that in the States
the whole life is fitted into a rigid schedule and time itself is a precious commodity. Conversely,
as a polychronic nation, Italians are more concerned with the people and the present moment
than the schedules (Hall, p. 42) and perceive time as something flexible like a flowing river. As a
result, Italians enjoy a much slower pace of life than Americans. For example, nearly every food
beverage business in the US has to go options, whereas in Italy it is not common since people tend
to enjoy their meals slowly, without haste. Consequently, the Italians tend to be more relaxed and
laid back about nearly everything: what is not done now, will be done later. Eventually. Sooner, or
later no stress there.
This list of differences between American and Italian cultures could go on and on, even though the
globalization through the new technologies has driven countries and cultures closer together than
ever before. But still, US and Italy present nearly opposite perspectives on the core values and
behavior patterns in life: Italy being more conservative and tradition oriented in family relations,
eating habits and general pace of life, while US valuing independence and efficiency above

To What Extent Did Hitler Manipulate the German Population...
To what extent did Hitler manipulate the German population into following his Nazi regime?
From 1933 1945 Adolf Hitler rose to the peak of his political power, by creating a stronghold
over the German people. The use of oratory skills, in conjunction with his knowledge and use of
propaganda and his suppression of details of the Holocaust, created a vibe of electric excitement for
Germany. (Fritzsche, 1998) His targeting of the German minority and his radical push for anti
Semitism allowed Hitler to corrupt a weak and innocent nation. Manipulative leadership was a
dominant force in the birth of his extremist beliefs and propagation, though this was assisted by the

Thousands upon thousands of Berliners cheered and celebrated as Hitler spoke of his new
ambitions and plans for Germany. The crowd, which was labelled by a fellow member of the
group as deafening , were excited by the Hitler s enthusiasm; this had been lacking under the
reign of Weimar democracy. (Fritzsche, 1998) The editor of Berlin s Nazi newspaper, Der
Angriff, Joseph Goebbels, remarked: Uprising! Spontaneous explosion of the people.
Indescribable! (Fritzsche, 1998) Even though later in history we see Hitler s ultimate motive to
be his own rise in political hierarchy, his speech introduced himself to the German public as a
populist and a revolutionary political genius. (Grunfield, 1974) Hitler endeavoured himself to
all economical classes, whether it be the bourgeoisie, peasantry or the aristocracy; to them it
appeared Hitler s priority was to move Germany out of the current economic crisis and strive to
develop Germany into a world superpower. The passion illustrated in Hitler s goals was
prevalent in his speeches, which led to the acceptance of a nation and the new title of our Fuhrer
(Grunfield, 1974) Hitler s use of Nazi propaganda was a major part of his scheme to empower
himself to a weak nation; it gained him respect from the German people and endeared himself to
them. The key, well documented, emphasis of the propaganda was the mass slaughter of all

The Merced River is the southernmost watercourse of the California Central Valley presently
inhabited by Chinook salmon whose abundance has decreased by 75% since 1950 (Yoshiyama et

Restoration planning identified the rehabilitation of the floodplain functions that foster recruitment
of riparian vegetation and the quality of riparian habitat. Fall run Chinook salmon is an important
management species in the Merced River, and numerous state and federal resource programs
include increasing its abundance in their goals. The vision has been to enhance channel, floodplain
and riparian ecosystem processes and critical habitats for juvenile and adult salmonids, in
coordination with local communities and stakeholders, to promote the recovery of healthy and
diverse Chinook salmon and steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) populations in the Merced River,
while helping to meet the abundance goals of the Anadromous Fish Restoration Program.
Robinson s restoration reach is approximately 2.4 km long and is located 16 km downstream of
Crocker Huffman Dam. The project included a very complex suite of actions to restore Robinson s
reach which was degraded as a result of mining activities and recent flood impacts. Channel
reconfiguration and the creation of a large floodplain with native vegetation increased the river
channel s ability to transport and deposit sediments under the river s current flow regime; hence
improving channel dynamics and salmon passage concerns. These actions within the channel

Courageousness In The Kite Runner By Khaled Hosseini
In the attention grabbing book, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, which is about an Afghan
boy, Amir, growing up and dealing with the pain of mistakes and unfortunate circumstances.
Amir manages to hide his wrong doings until he receives a call from an old friend. Amir moves
out of Afghanistan in his late teenage years with his father Baba, a man who is courageous and
hard to satisfy, not bringing much with him besides a few clothing items and a whole lot of
guilt for abandoning his friend Hassan. To redeem himself, Amir travels back to Afghanistan as
an adult facing challenges such as violence and lack of courage to save his nephew and bring
him to safety. Amir channels Baba s courageousness when fighting with Assef, which then
allows Amir to relieve the guilt he struggles with during the story. Baba s actions clearly display
his undeniable traits of courage and dissatisfaction in the first half of the book. The fact that
Baba is a strong and heroic man is easily identified by the reader at the beginning of the book
especially when a soldier requests to rape a wife as the price for the truck passing through when
Baba and Amir are escaping Afghanistan; however, Baba stands up to the soldier saying, Tell
him I ll take a thousand of his bullets before I let this indecency take place (Hosseini 82). It is
necessary for Hosseini to portray Baba as a courageous character because it introduces the theme
of guilt early when Amir lacks courage and feels poorly about

Veiled Sentiment Essay
Discourse is verbal and non verbal way of exchanging thoughts and feelings. Although in Veiled
Sentiments, Bedouin people seemed to be sharing the same opinions and emotions privately as
well as in public, noticeable contrast between the public and private discourses existed. In this
paper, I will try to clarify the distinction and provide an example of a discourse from my everyday
life. Discourse is a long talk or piece of writing about a subject that serves as a tool to exchange
ideas and sentiments. Michael Foucault presents possibly the best definition of discourse. He says,
Discourse is the systems of thoughts composed of ideas, attitudes, and courses of action, beliefs and
practices that systematically construct the subjects and the worlds of which they speak. In Veiled
Sentiments, it was mainly about poetic letters and conversations Bedouin natives used to
communicate with each other. However, Bedouins shared different content in their discourses in
public and in private situations and poetry certainly signified the disparity. Public discourses were
used with particular intentions. Generally... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bedouins would reveal their true sentiments towards certain matters or other people in their private
poems. Women shared their poems only with their relatives, friends or neighbors. Men, also limited
the group of people they shared private poems to their relatives of the same generation and men
with the same level of status. Romance was an exception to that rule. Couples were allowed to
exchange private poems with each other to express feelings and affection. Another point worth
mentioning is that Bedouins never wrote their names after any poems. People would understand the
meaning of a poem if it was written to them, without knowing the author. At the same time, this
tradition protected the authors from embarrassment or issues when poems ended up in wrong

The Globalization Of Globalization
Based on Sparke s textbook, Globalization can be defined as the extension, acceleration, and
intensification of consequential worldwide global interconnections. This is what he refers to as
little g globalization. These global interconnections reveal the ties and tensions of globalization.
There is also big G globalization which is what Sparke calls using globalization as a buzzword in a
political context. A big part of globalization is commodities and commodity chains. A commodity
can be simply defined as anything that is bought or sold while a commodity chain is the production
process that produces these commodities. Understanding commodities and commodity chains is
important to be able to understand globalization. One example of how commodities demonstrate
globalization is outsourcing and offshoring. By doing this, companies bring their companies
overseas which means that they are interconnected with other parts of the world. Understanding
commodity chains can also allow you to understand the ties and tensions. I decided to focus on the
apparel industry and the commodity of a piece of clothing. This commodity shows some of the
tensions related to labor, like constantly searching for the cheapest labor, and tensions related to the
environment, like pollution from the clothing industry. A piece of clothing also shows ties through,
for instance, in which countries clothes are produced and to which countries they are being
exported to. The article Indian Textile and

Importance Of Tidal Energy
Electricity Culminating
Renewable Energy Project
Nazia Nusrat

December 17, 2017
Why should tidal energy be a common renewable energy source in the future?
Tidal energy is a form of hydroelectricity that is provided from the rise and fall of tides. Due to the
Moon s gravitational force, bodies of water rise and fall, the force created can be turned into a form
of renewable energy. Tidal power was first introduced in the 19th century in U.S and Europe. In
1966, the Rance Tidal Power Station, was operated in France, being the first large scale tidal
system. Tidal energy is more predictable than solar panels and wind turbines. The sun isn t always
out to provide light and the wind depends on the weather. Tides are almost always there and the
ocean is more understood than the temperature or the sun. Tidal energy is much more reliable and
renewable than other sources such as fossil fuels which cause acid rain, and nuclear power and its
radiation. Since the ocean is much denser than air, tidal turbines generate more electricity and
therefore are more efficient compared to wind turbines. Hydro power in general is considered more
efficient and converts the most energy to electricity than other renewable energy sources.
Tidal power is also inexpensive compared to other renewable energy sources as shown below in
this chart.
Tidal power plants also have a very long lifespan. The oldest plant, La Rance, in

475 Japanese American Internment Camps
On January 14, 1942 president Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066. This order authorized
the removement of all Japanese Americans into internment camps. One of those camps being
located 30 minutes away from where I reside. It horrifies me to picture how this man could
exclude and relocate innocent people into camps simply because they were of the same race as
our country s enemy at the time. These Americans were treated with no respect, stripped from
their rights, and even killed at these camps. The name of the camp near me is Rohwer and it is
located in Desha county. At least 8,475 Japanese Americans were held there and most of them
were school aged children. These people did not even get a chance to eat whatever food they
pleased. Their

The Catacomb Saints
A 1578 discovery of tombs in Rome has many people baffled. The tombs have the skeletons of
Christian Martyrs who were considered saints because of their unwavering bravery and loyalty
to their faith. The skeletons were called the Catacomb Saints. The skeletons also had jewelry
wigs, crowns and armor. They were displayed in many churches in order to remind people that
riches await loyal Christians after they die. Even though this may sound like a strange story and
many people would have a hard time believing it, it is actually true. Paul Koudounaris, who was an
art historian, was very fascinated with the story of the saints. He traveled throughout Europe in
order to find the status of every saint. He also wrote a book about the skeletons entitled

Most importantly, I believe we should start a fire, and keep it going for the remains of our time

Long Distance Running Is Not A Sport For Wimps
Personal Observation #5 Long distance running is not a sport for wimps. Distance runners seem
to have a pretty strong connection with each other because of all suffering and pain that goes
into pushing their bodies to the limit. This is evident in the waves (or nods because one is out of
breath) exchanged between complete strangers that meet while out for a run. Cross country teams
are even more cohesive. With all the time spent together at practice, team members have a solid
bond that lasts long outside of running and practice. One the first day of track, the new freshman
who were not in cross country are a little lost. The distance runners have their little group, the
sprinters have their group, and the throwers have a group as well. The groups intermingle
somewhat, but it is fairly easy to tell who belongs in which group. You also associate people with
what track group they belong to. The track team is a group, and each discipline is a subgroup.
Even though I would not say that the subgroups are (probably) prejudiced against each other,
interaction does need to be improved. This can be done by implementing the things to reduce
prejudice like contact, common goal, friendly/informal setting, and interaction with multiple out
group members. When I was in high school, we formed small groups within the track team made
up of about six people from all grades and disciplines. In college track, we also have small groups
of about seven people that we do devotions with each week

influential leadership position, is important for the same reasons for the rest of the LGBT

John Winthrop And Roger Williams
In early American literature, religion is one of the more consistent as well as prevalent themes.
This is primarily due to the fact that early settlers of the American colonies were seeking to
escape religious persecution, as well as to find a place to freely develop and expand their religious
convictions. Despite sharing common English heritage as well as branching from the Anglican and
Catholic church, religious views on liturgy and deontological ethics differed greatly amongst the
settlers. This can be seen in the works of John Winthrop and Roger Williams. While both men s
religious beliefs stemmed from the same roots, each held different opinions on how rigid religion
and liturgy should be held throughout the community. During the time of English colonization and
settlement, John Winthrop wrote many pieces related to the importance of religion in society.
These writings include A Model of Christian Charity which focused mainly on Puritanideas on how
to treat one another in order for the colony to survive.Winthrop, a very influential Puritan founder,
proposed a society in the new colony of Massachusetts centered around religion and the idea that
Puritan beliefs were the only sure way to ensure God s blessings. Winthrop discusses that it is a
civil duty amongst colonists to involve the Puritan religion in everyday life in order to preserve the
colony as well as Puritan values. In the piece Winthrop writes that if the colony ...shall neglect the

Easter Island has a unique history that outlines key theories of how man can have detrimental
effects on nature. With our beliefs, customs and general life needs, societies become dependent on
our environment and resources. This can result in an irreversible destruction of an environment and
Easter Island has proven this to be posable. With a society becoming hugely dependant on the

Due to Easter Island s location, the climate was considerably different to that of what the Rapa

salt spray, cooler temperature and variation in rainfall (Hunt, 2006, p. 413) and (Wright, 2004, p.

The Two Main Types Of International Organizations
International organizations have been noted to be around since the mid 19th century and such
organizations do not operate for profit. An international organization is defined by the United
Nations as an organization with an international membership, scope, or presence. The main
objective of all the international organizations they say ,have usually been welfare and the
improvement of member countries through cooperation. Karns and Mingst identify the two main
types of international organizations as IGOs and INGOs which they also refer to as international

They employ limited resources to make rules, set standards, procreate principles and broadly
represent more humanity than states and other actors do. There are many kinds of NGOs such as
transnational, government organized, government regulated and initiated, business and industry,
donor organized, donor dominated, people s organizations, operational, advocacy, transnational
social movements, quasi, and anti governmental NGOs. Their number increased (more than 23,000
in the early 1990s) and their effectiveness for transnational politics became more relevant in recent
decades. They have become crucial participants in the international policy process says Brown
(1995). Some INGOs are formed to advocate a particular cause such as human rights, peace, or
environmental protection. While others are established to provide services such as disaster relief,
humanitarian aid in war torn societies, or development assistance. Many INGOs are transnational
federations involving formal, long term links among national groups. Examples include the
International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the World Wildlife Fund,
Transparency International, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and Save the Children.
INGOs governance functions parallel many functions provided by IGOs and, like IGOs, they can

so much time and effort. The people involved in the changes want to help themselves, a group or
section of people, or just want to change the society as a whole. Some people want to make change

and since then has become even more strict on the sponsoring and promotion of tobacco brand
logos. Now, all tobacco ads used, dissuade users from consuming. Advertisements in general can
be obnoxious and tiresome, but they are sometimes necessary for the seller to get their point
across. Ads are either trying to get money from the consumer or driving to change a person s mind
positively. The main reasoning for the creation of advertisements is to persuade the viewer or
audience through the evocation of ethos, pathos, and logos, to have a change of mind about the

This ad has an emotional appeal to the audience, as the result of both objects is not something
people really look forward to: death. Of course, nobody wants to die, its only human nature.
Looking at this ad, the viewer might start questioning him or herself emotionally, thinking about
the loved ones around them. In the end it will only hurt the people who care for them. A simple
yet powerful logical appeal towards its audience is accomplished ambiguously or dualistically. I
think it questions the viewer or smoker rationally, why they would want a slow and painful death.
The viewer can choose to die quick or slow , either option, you re going to die so you might as
well choose the bullet, a fast and less painful choice. But that is not what it is suggesting, it seems
to be getting at the point that death by either choice is unnecessary and ignorant of the user.
This type of advertisement is selfless in that it seeks to achieve satisfaction from the possibility of
stopping its intended audience from smoking and nothing more. It even asks at the bottom of the
picture if the individual needs help. Following up with a smokeline expresses concern for the
person. In its design, the layout has a depressing background. This gloomy image is possibly

nearly free reign in running America. The hands off policies of capitalism, many argue, are solely
responsible for the fact that that a small minority of the population currently enjoys a greater share
of the national wealth than that of some three quarters of the nation combined. The reaction of
many writers and speakers to the barrage of hurdles faced by the American way of life has been to,
in effect, flush the entire experiment.
Instead of devising real world solutions to our real world problems, a large number of thinkers
and learned individuals have chosen to react to the failings of America and other nations which
share its basic ideals by creating, either as intentions or as realities, alternate versions of society
which are almost always rooted in the belief that these are, in some way, perfect places, or utopias.
Societies such as the one described in Edward Bellamy s Looking Backward: 2000 to 1887, where
there is no money, no private ownership, perfectly equal distribution of resources, and, supposedly

Milkweed Inhumanity Quotes
In the book, Milkweed shows a theme of compassion versus inhumanity several ways. Milkweed
show the theme compassion versus inhumanity. They were beaten by clubs, kicked out of their
own homes, hanged, bombed and painted by the Jackboots. Milkweed tells the reader the things
Misha and other characters have been mistreated by the inhuman Jackboots In a scene of
Milkweed the Jackboots pressure hosed a jew because, they thought he took the hoof of the
horse on the Merry go round. On Page 67 it states: Someone noosed another rope around his
neck. Someone else ripped of his clothes. They stopped ten meters from the shrinking man of
eyes and pointed the hose at him. Water leaped out. The hose flew out of the Jackboots hands
and whipped wildly about like a sliced worm. This quote shows how cruel the Jackboots were.
Imagine yourself being in public rope around neck, no clothes on, and being hosed down by
water hosed. Notice that it says the hose flew out of the Jackboots hand that means that the water
has a lot of pressure. This is all because the Jackboots think he did it because he s a jew.... Show

Select one of two recent airport PPPs St. Petersburg, Russia, or Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Describe
the PPP process used and what were the critical issues that needed to be overcome? Assess the
factors that will be crucial to the PPP s future sustainability.
This memo examines the public private partnership used to develop the Pulkovo airport in St
Petersburg, Russia.
Pulkovo was the first airport to be developed in Russia using a PPP. The contract is between three
parties: the St. Petersburg City Government, the Pulkovo Airport Company (100% city owned) and
the Northern Capital Gateway Consortium (NCG), the airport operator with the duty of organizing
the management and development of the airport. The contract started in April 2010 and will remain
in force until 2039.
St. Petersburg is Russia s second largest city after Moscow with around 5 million inhabitants. The
city is home to many domestic and international companies, but its economy also relies heavily on
tourism, hence transport links are crucial to the city s growth. Transport infrastructure had
suffered from long term under investment (KPMG estimated the depletion of Russia s national
airport assets between from 40% to 80%) and in 2008, amid double digit growth in passenger
traffic, the existing airport suffered from overcrowding and would be unable to cater for the 11
million annual passenger traffic projected for 2012. It was also seen as unable to meet the increased

Lord Capulet Fatherhood Quotes
Not every person is what they appear to be when you first meet them. The Tragedy of Romeo
and Juliet, a play written by William Shakespeare, beholds a tragic love story and a feud between
two families. During the time period in which the play took place, marriages were not an act of
love, but rather parents typically would choose the right husband for their daughter. However, as
the head of the Capulet household, Lord Capulet, has different intentions on marriage for his
daughter, Juliet. In the beginning of Romeo and Juliet, Lord Capulet is relaxed when it comes to
fatherhood, but his attitude gradually shifts to being more controlling, and eventually, he becomes
cruel, forcing his daughter to marry, which ends in tragedy for her and his family. Lord Capulet
comes off relaxed in fatherhood in the beginning of Romeo and Juliet. Early on in the play, a fight
breaks out again between two wealthy families,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

While no Montagues were invited to this party held by the Capulets, Romeo, son of Lord

Although Lord Capulet holds Tybalt back from getting into a fight with Romeo, Tybalt doesn t

disobedience, says He shall be endured. What, goodman boy! I say, he shall. Go to. Am I the
master here, or you? Go to. You ll not endure him! ( I, V, 76 9). Lord Capulet s outburst towards
Tybalt shows yet again that he has another more controlling side to him. He makes sure that Tybalt
knows that he is not the head of the Capulet household, but instead Lord Capulet is. Lord Capulet
has different attitudes and the play reveals that he seemingly is becoming less relaxed and more
controlling as the story continues to

The Social Security Act Of 1935 And Medicaid Insurance
There has been an increasingly large amount of awareness placed on the governments role in
prevention and standards for the control of health care and communicable diseases. In this growing
effort are provisions applying to long term health and stipulations for proper treatment and care.
Gradually, a shift from local community efforts to care for the elder has transferred to a prominent
government role. Several committees have been created to assist with the implementation and over
view of care and acts to instigate change. Amongst the major changes that have been set in place
effecting long term care, was the passage of the Social Security Act of 1935 and Medicaid

At this time, federal efforts began to assist with disabled and ill seamen. The Marine Hospital
was founded to deliver federally funded care and began the materialization of the government s
role in public health. As the government s role in public health remains, major changes have
been put into effect, precisely dealing with long term care. Before the 1930 s, providing care for
the elderly was exclusively a local and state run industry. However, after the great depression, a
growing demand was placed on providing some type of insurance for that population. The Social
Security Act of 1935 was established to assist with Federal old age benefits and was signed into
effect by President Roosevelt on August 15, 1935. (Home, 2015) Another major impact to long
term care has been the creation of Medicaid that went into effect in 1965 and was an amendment
to the Social Security Act of 1935. Title XIX of the Social Security Act is a federal and state
entitlement program that pays for medical assistance for certain individuals and families with low
incomes and resources Medicaid is a collective effort between state and the government to help
provide insurance for eligible citizens. Among those covered under this insurance, are the elderly,
disabled and pregnant. Medicaid is the largest source of funding for medical care. The new
changes to Medicaid are ongoing and will be put into effect as part of Obamacare. The Obama

The Story Of Rapunzel In Disney And The Grim Brothers
Disney is a name most households know. The Grim Brothers were a household name. They tell
them same stories sometimes. They both want to help children but they go about it in two very
different ways. Disney gives good and happy ending fantasies. The grim brothers give reality no
matter if it was happy or evil. They both help children but are they the same? Let s look at the
some of the differences to see. Disney s Tangled is a story about Rapunzel. Rapunzel and her
mom are saved by the healing flower. Because of this Gothel kidnaped Rapunzel to still have the
flower s power to make her young. When Rapunzel grows up in a tower in the middle of a forest.
She thinks that Gothel is her motherbut later realizes that to be false. She grows up to be
independent and to have courage. She runs away from the only home she knows to see the
floating lights up close. Finn goes to the tower to hide but Rapunzel knocks him out and hides the
stolen haul that he had. She then tells him that he will not get it back till he takes her to see the
floating lights. He agrees to the deal seeing how it was his only option. They go to see the floating
lights but when they get there they find out that Rapunzel is the missing princess. The meaning that
Disney wants one know is life needs adventure to spice it up. The character that goes thru the most
change is Rapunzel herself. She goes from a good daughter to a strong independent woman in a
short period. The character that has the second most change

Why Is Leonardo Da Vinci Considered An Honorable Man
In the dictionary honor is defined as high respect or esteem. I believe that honor is doing
something that helps other people even though it may not benefit them. Leonardo da Vinci was
a very honorable man. He was honorable because his work was truly ground breaking and
helped many people but he did not receive any prestigious awards because in his time they did
not have awards for scientific discoveries. He brought us out of the dark ages and gave us a head
start on where we are today. He was the first person to ever actually start asking questions instead
of just following the crowd ( Leonardo da Vinci| Renaissance Man | Scientist ). He, even for the
day and age he was living in. had ideas for tanks, helicopters, solar power and a calculator (
Leonardo da Vinci Biography ). He possessed a great number of abilities one of which being art
but, even more impressive he was an expert in anatomy, zoology, botany, geology, optics,
aerodynamics and hydrodynamics along with a few other categories this made him very capable

Essay about The Odyssey
The life of a God, forever bliss, complete happiness: Odysseus slights all of these things in order
for him to return to his loving wife and son. The concept of true commitment was a very
commendable quality for a Greek hero to possess. With this character trait, Odysseus models the
ideal husband, father, and leader. Unfortunately, in today s society, one rarely encounters such
outstanding morality. Being raised in an explicit society, a decrease in certain morals has become
fashionable. In particular, the college experience has become accepted as the wild times of one s
life. Certain activities ordinarily shunned are now perceived as a learning experiencewhen involving
a college student. Drugs and alcohol abuse are commonplace around... Show more content on

But let him have no company, gods or men,
Only a raft that he must lash together,
And after twenty days, worn out at sea,
He shall make land upon the garden aisle. (263)
This edict of Zeus summarizes the journey Odysseus makes in order to return home. He endures dire
hardships to make the journey home, yet he still chooses to continue forward. Although Odysseus
accepts this hardship as a mere speed bump, many people today would not prevail through such
adversity. A knack for finding the easy way out has seemed to blossom as the one uniform skill
possessed by most young people today. With today s technology, a person rarely spends an
afternoon by himself, and if so, would not like it. With this in mind, choosing to continue on with
the journey in present times would be much harder of a decision to make than in ancient times.
Another problem around school campuses is the growing rate of alcohol and drug abuse amongst
students. Extreme marijuana usage has taken claim to many victims. The drug may not kill the
person using it, but it does kill motivation. The drug becomes a part of the user s life, and the user
will eventually become lethargic. This lethargy continues to increase until most productive
activities are eliminated. Although Odysseus s crew did not have marijuana on their ship, his crew
did encounter a drug that posed a similar threat. Odysseus explains the drug, but those who ate this
honeyed plant, the Lotus,/ never cared to report,

The Pros And Cons Of Television Shows
If you have ever watched TV, you might notice many commonalities and trends between many of
the TV shows that are on air. The shows usually follow similar storylines of a protagonist
(usually male) who struggles with their own moral values, usually stirring up trouble for
themselves and those around them. Now you re probably asking yourself: Hm I wonder why so
many shows follow similar patterns? Well the answer to that question is because of YOU! It s
all your fault that TV can be so monotonous and repetitive. You are a part of a giant collective
that drives what TV shows are being shown, what TV shows are being cancelled, and even when
TV shows are being played. You are a part of the audience. The audience is what drives TV shows
to be the entertaining platforms that they are meant to be, but they are also the most crippling
aspect of the televisionitself.
If I wanted to pitch a TV show to a TV network, the script would be immediately thrown in the
trash. This is because I am nowhere to be found in the hierarchy of the television network. The
television hierarchy makes it almost impossible for lesser known writers and producers to release
their work on popular networks. Also, newer shows do not get as much of a fighting chance as
others because these new shows must compete with other popular TV shows for the best time slots,
therefore getting less viewers, increasing the chance the network pulls the plug on new shows.
When TV networks try to decide what shows to put on

A Seperate-Personal Narrative
I can still recall that day and its scent; the scent of freshly sharpened wooden pencils, disinfectant,

have been there physically, but I was not entirely there psychologically. To me, it was all a
moving picture in mute. I could see, feel, smell, and taste, but I could not listen. I was only able to
perceive gabble, meaningless sounds that were meant to be words, but, unfortunately, did not make

A well organized transportation system decreases overheads, while a disorganized transportation system increases expenditures (Gerdes, 2008). The effects of transportation are not at all times anticipated, and can include unintended or unforeseen impacts like congestion. Transport as well carries a vital environmental and social load that cannot be ignored. The additional values along with employment impacts of transport services generally extend past employment as well as added value created by that activity; indirect impacts are most important. For instance, transportation firms buy a fraction of their effort from local dealers. The manufacturing of these inputs creates additional value added as well as job opportunities in the local market. The sellers in turn buy goods and services from other local companies. There are added rounds of local re spending that produce additional value added in addition to employment. In the same way, homes that get revenue from jobs created in transport activities use some of their earnings on local supplies as well as services. These acquisitions result in extra local employment and added value. A number of of the household earnings from these additional jobs is subsequently used up on local commodities and services, thus creating more jobs as well as income for local homes. • 3. The Story Of An Hour And A Pair Of Silk Stockings By Kate... Chopin Expresses Feminine Repression Authors often have their own literary repertoire, or style, to appeal to the audience in which they are writing to. Kate Chopin is a well known writer, known for her works that mainly focus around women and their expected roles in society. Chopin s writings are often based on the effect that the turn of the century had on women, which she best expresses in her two short stories The Story of an Hour and A Pair of Silk Stockings . In both of the stories previously stated, the author gives the audience just enough background on the main characters, both female, and their trapped everyday life; so that throughout each story, the reader can connect and better understand the author s purpose. By using literary elements, Kate Chopin does an outstanding job of relating to the audience with the realism of feminism. Kate Chopin uses elements such as setting, tone, and irony in her short stories The Story of an Hour and A Pair of Silk Stockings to express her ideas concerning societal expectations of women in the 1800 s. Writers use many literary elements to help connect to their stories; Kate Chopin does an excellent job of doing so by using tone. Webster s Dictionary defines tone as a general character or attitude or situational piece of writing . In Chopin s A Story of an Hour , she uses a dramatic death to set a depressing tone. The anxiety and overwhelming wave of feelings that comes over the audience when reading about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Slavery During The 19th Century Talin Ivey Mr. Decker US Dual Credit History 13 September 2015 Slavery in 17th Century VS Slavery in the late 19th Century Many people view slavery as one consecutive time period where African Americans were captured and kept to serve the needs of Caucasian individuals and families. But not very many people know the true extent of slavery among the colonies. Less are aware of the nature in which slavery evolved from a trading industry in the 17th century into its greater known state of forced labor in the 19th century. When most people hear the word slave, they picture an African American held in bondage by an English slave holder. While this may be an accurate description for many cases, a lot of different ethnic groups would paint a different picture. When the Spanish first came to America, they saw the natives as their tickets to the riches of the new world. As their greed for wealth and agricultural demand rose, the demand for slaves also began to increase. Although, as time began to reveal, the Spaniards also found it hard to keep the native slaves because many of them had allies and since they were native to the land, they knew it pretty well enough to escape. African enslavement really started when the Spaniards began to seek for slaves that were foreign to the land and would survive their harsh treatment and foreign diseases (McDougal 77). As early as 1619, a Dutch ship carried the first Africans to Virginia, but it would not be until the 1680s that black ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Fitting is the name Bosque del Apache, meaning woods of the Apache, a reminder of the Apache peoples of long ago who lived along the Rio Grande. Currently, there are more than 6 million veterans in the United States with a disability. A veteran is defined as a person who has served or is serving in the United States Armed Forces. While reintegrating the veterans back into the workplace, veterans with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD), and Physical Disabilities will be one of the greatest challenges that any agency will encounter. • 11. Poetry Of Yeats s Poetry Personally, I would have to strongly disagree with this statement as I find his poems interesting and comprehensible. Right from the onset, Yeats became one of my favourite poets as I admire his unique style and impressive language skills. I believe that his poems are a reflection of his own life... An interesting and influential one that faced rejection from Maude Gonne, creating the Abbey theatre in Dublin and winning the Nobel Prize for literature in 1923. I feel that he captures a calm atmosphere in his nature poems using onomatopoeia and with a unique style which draws me in as a reader. Yeats also portrays a powerful message in his political poems and conveys his thoughts and emotions when he utilises clever similes coupled with alliteration or assonance. The poems that I have studied are The Lake Isle of Innisfree , The Wild Swans at Coole , An Irish Airman Foresees His Death , September 1913 and Sailing to Byzantium... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He uses repetition which creates emphasis on what he is trying to convey. This is evident when he opens with the line I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree . Yeats flaunts his poetic skills once more through a rhyming pattern at the end of every second line. made...glade , slow...glow etc. Also, I feel that Yeats depicts the core theme of the poem through vibrant imagery. The Lake Isle of Innisfree is about an island that he finds personal solace on in Lough Gill and he remarkably conveys this through conjuring the most vivid images possible and paints a picture for me. This is evident when he states There midnight s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow and I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore . • 12. Examples Of Figurative Language In The Great Gatsby In the novel, The Great Gatsby, the author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, employs different types of figurative language to construct representations of the motifs and to help enhance them. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote novels and short stories during the Jazz Age in American History. He had led a tough life and gone through two relationships prior to his wife, Zelda. Both Zelda and Fitzgerald started falling apart when they turned to drinking and partying and eventually, she was admitted to an insane asylum. Shortly after, he decided to write, The Great Gatsby, which was staged around his life. In this novel, Fitzgerald parallels himself around two of the main male characters, Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway. He tells about his life and of his closest acquaintances... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, while Nick is at Gatsby s party, he starts to describe what he sees. Most of the things that Nick says are examples of symbolism. In this example, Nick states, In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars. (Fitzgerald, 39). Since a simile is the comparison using the words like or as , the example present is comparing the man and the girls who enjoy Gatsby s party, much like moths enjoy the light. This is a quote describing the people because it means they didn t show up to meet with Gatsby, but, in fact, they are only present for the party. In the next example, Fitzgerald is developing the character, Jay Gatsby, by showing his wealth through the narrator, Nick Carraway. Again, Nick Carraway is describing what he sees which is Gatsby s station wagon scampered like a brisk yellow bug to meet all trains. (Fitzgerald, 39). The example displayed above indicates how similar a station wagon is to a brisk yellow bug and how alike they behave. To summarize, Fitzgerald incorporated similes as a type of figurative language in The Great Gatsby to describe both the setting and the characters throughout the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Italian Culture Vs American Culture Research Paper Student s Name Professor s Name Subject 06 October 2016 American vs. Italian culture: worlds apart By definition, culture is a combination of collectively shared traits, values and traditions that distinguish one human group from another (Hofstede, 1991). Thus culture is in essence that heart and spirit that makes each country and its people unique and different. And in that sense, America and Italy are literally at the opposite sides of nearly every aspect of culture. Being an Italian American, I have grown in a family where these two opposites meet and blend together. Albeit the differences of these two cultures are nearly innumerable, the most commonly recognized and distinct ones lay in the areas of family relations, eating habits and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hall (1983, pp.42 54): monochronic (US) vs. polychronic (Italy). That means that in the States the whole life is fitted into a rigid schedule and time itself is a precious commodity. Conversely, as a polychronic nation, Italians are more concerned with the people and the present moment than the schedules (Hall, p. 42) and perceive time as something flexible like a flowing river. As a result, Italians enjoy a much slower pace of life than Americans. For example, nearly every food beverage business in the US has to go options, whereas in Italy it is not common since people tend to enjoy their meals slowly, without haste. Consequently, the Italians tend to be more relaxed and laid back about nearly everything: what is not done now, will be done later. Eventually. Sooner, or later no stress there. This list of differences between American and Italian cultures could go on and on, even though the globalization through the new technologies has driven countries and cultures closer together than ever before. But still, US and Italy present nearly opposite perspectives on the core values and behavior patterns in life: Italy being more conservative and tradition oriented in family relations, eating habits and general pace of life, while US valuing independence and efficiency above ... From 1933 1945 Adolf Hitler rose to the peak of his political power, by creating a stronghold over the German people. The use of oratory skills, in conjunction with his knowledge and use of propaganda and his suppression of details of the Holocaust, created a vibe of electric excitement for Germany. (Fritzsche, 1998) His targeting of the German minority and his radical push for anti Semitism allowed Hitler to corrupt a weak and innocent nation. Restoration planning identified the rehabilitation of the floodplain functions that foster recruitment of riparian vegetation and the quality of riparian habitat. Fall run Chinook salmon is an important management species in the Merced River, and numerous state and federal resource programs include increasing its abundance in their goals. The vision has been to enhance channel, floodplain and riparian ecosystem processes and critical habitats for juvenile and adult salmonids, in coordination with local communities and stakeholders, to promote the recovery of healthy and diverse Chinook salmon and steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) populations in the Merced River, while helping to meet the abundance goals of the Anadromous Fish Restoration Program. The project included a very complex suite of actions to restore Robinson s reach which was degraded as a result of mining activities and recent flood impacts. Courageousness In The Kite Runner By Khaled Hosseini In the attention grabbing book, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, which is about an Afghan boy, Amir, growing up and dealing with the pain of mistakes and unfortunate circumstances. Amir manages to hide his wrong doings until he receives a call from an old friend. Amir moves out of Afghanistan in his late teenage years with his father Baba, a man who is courageous and hard to satisfy, not bringing much with him besides a few clothing items and a whole lot of guilt for abandoning his friend Hassan. To redeem himself, Amir travels back to Afghanistan as an adult facing challenges such as violence and lack of courage to save his nephew and bring him to safety. Amir channels Baba s courageousness when fighting with Assef, which then allows Amir to relieve the guilt he struggles with during the story. Baba s actions clearly display his undeniable traits of courage and dissatisfaction in the first half of the book. The fact that Baba is a strong and heroic man is easily identified by the reader at the beginning of the book especially when a soldier requests to rape a wife as the price for the truck passing through when Baba and Amir are escaping Afghanistan; however, Baba stands up to the soldier saying, Tell him I ll take a thousand of his bullets before I let this indecency take place (Hosseini 82). Although in Veiled Sentiments, Bedouin people seemed to be sharing the same opinions and emotions privately as well as in public, noticeable contrast between the public and private discourses existed. In this paper, I will try to clarify the distinction and provide an example of a discourse from my everyday life. Discourse is a long talk or piece of writing about a subject that serves as a tool to exchange ideas and sentiments. Michael Foucault presents possibly the best definition of discourse. He says, Discourse is the systems of thoughts composed of ideas, attitudes, and courses of action, beliefs and practices that systematically construct the subjects and the worlds of which they speak. In Veiled Sentiments, it was mainly about poetic letters and conversations Bedouin natives used to communicate with each other. However, Bedouins shared different content in their discourses in public and in private situations and poetry certainly signified the disparity. Couples were allowed to exchange private poems with each other to express feelings and affection. Another point worth mentioning is that Bedouins never wrote their names after any poems. This is what he refers to as little g globalization. These global interconnections reveal the ties and tensions of globalization. There is also big G globalization which is what Sparke calls using globalization as a buzzword in a political context. A big part of globalization is commodities and commodity chains. A commodity can be simply defined as anything that is bought or sold while a commodity chain is the production process that produces these commodities. Understanding commodities and commodity chains is important to be able to understand globalization. One example of how commodities demonstrate globalization is outsourcing and offshoring. By doing this, companies bring their companies overseas which means that they are interconnected with other parts of the world. Understanding commodity chains can also allow you to understand the ties and tensions. I decided to focus on the apparel industry and the commodity of a piece of clothing. This commodity shows some of the tensions related to labor, like constantly searching for the cheapest labor, and tensions related to the environment, like pollution from the clothing industry. • 22. Importance Of Tidal Energy Electricity Culminating Renewable Energy Project Nazia Nusrat SNC 1D A. Cook December 17, 2017 Why should tidal energy be a common renewable energy source in the future? Tidal energy is a form of hydroelectricity that is provided from the rise and fall of tides. Due to the Moon s gravitational force, bodies of water rise and fall, the force created can be turned into a form of renewable energy. Tidal power was first introduced in the 19th century in U.S and Europe. In 1966, the Rance Tidal Power Station, was operated in France, being the first large scale tidal system. Tidal energy is more predictable than solar panels and wind turbines. The sun isn t always out to provide light and the wind depends on the weather. Tides are almost always there and the ocean is more understood than the temperature or the sun. Tidal energy is much more reliable and renewable than other sources such as fossil fuels which cause acid rain, and nuclear power and its radiation. Since the ocean is much denser than air, tidal turbines generate more electricity and therefore are more efficient compared to wind turbines. Hydro power in general is considered more efficient and converts the most energy to electricity than other renewable energy sources. Tidal power is also inexpensive compared to other renewable energy sources as shown below in this chart. Tidal power plants also have a very long lifespan. The oldest plant, La Rance, in ... • 27. Long Distance Running Is Not A Sport For Wimps Personal Observation #5 Long distance running is not a sport for wimps. Distance runners seem to have a pretty strong connection with each other because of all suffering and pain that goes into pushing their bodies to the limit. This is evident in the waves (or nods because one is out of breath) exchanged between complete strangers that meet while out for a run. Cross country teams are even more cohesive. With all the time spent together at practice, team members have a solid bond that lasts long outside of running and practice. One the first day of track, the new freshman who were not in cross country are a little lost. The distance runners have their little group, the sprinters have their group, and the throwers have a group as well. The groups intermingle somewhat, but it is fairly easy to tell who belongs in which group. You also associate people with what track group they belong to. The track team is a group, and each discipline is a subgroup. Even though I would not say that the subgroups are (probably) prejudiced against each other, interaction does need to be improved. This can be done by implementing the things to reduce prejudice like contact, common goal, friendly/informal setting, and interaction with multiple out group members. When I was in high school, we formed small groups within the track team made up of about six people from all grades and disciplines. This is primarily due to the fact that early settlers of the American colonies were seeking to escape religious persecution, as well as to find a place to freely develop and expand their religious convictions. Despite sharing common English heritage as well as branching from the Anglican and Catholic church, religious views on liturgy and deontological ethics differed greatly amongst the settlers. This can be seen in the works of John Winthrop and Roger Williams. While both men s religious beliefs stemmed from the same roots, each held different opinions on how rigid religion and liturgy should be held throughout the community. During the time of English colonization and settlement, John Winthrop wrote many pieces related to the importance of religion in society. These writings include A Model of Christian Charity which focused mainly on Puritanideas on how to treat one another in order for the colony to survive.Winthrop, a very influential Puritan founder, proposed a society in the new colony of Massachusetts centered around religion and the idea that Puritan beliefs were the only sure way to ensure God s blessings. With our beliefs, customs and general life needs, societies become dependent on our environment and resources. This can result in an irreversible destruction of an environment and Easter Island has proven this to be posable. With a society becoming hugely dependant on the limited resources available and failure to understand the need to preserve these resources for future generations caused immense pressure. As a result of the unfamiliar climate conditions agriculture become exceedingly difficult, because of the strong winds which brought with them disturbed salt spray, cooler temperature and variation in rainfall (Hunt, 2006, p. 413) and (Wright, 2004, p. 59). These factors constructed an environment that was not suitable for a variety of foods to be cultivated; this added to the problems that the Rapa Nui people had to endure. Diamond (2005) also reiterates Wright and Hunt s evidence supporting the same claim that Easter Island had geographical issues which become challenging for the new settlers. Advertisements in general can be obnoxious and tiresome, but they are sometimes necessary for the seller to get their point across. Ads are either trying to get money from the consumer or driving to change a person s mind positively. A simple yet powerful logical appeal towards its audience is accomplished ambiguously or dualistically. I think it questions the viewer or smoker rationally, why they would want a slow and painful death. The viewer can choose to die quick or slow , either option, you re going to die so you might as well choose the bullet, a fast and less painful choice. But that is not what it is suggesting, it seems to be getting at the point that death by either choice is unnecessary and ignorant of the user. (Brunner pp. 823 833) There exists no easy solution to any one of these or countless other problems with which this nation must cope. Additionally, all of the above comes coupled with the moral criticisms that have been leveled at the American way of running its business, or, more precisely, the way business has been allowed a nearly free reign in running America. The hands off policies of capitalism, many argue, are solely responsible for the fact that that a small minority of the population currently enjoys a greater share of the national wealth than that of some three quarters of the nation combined. The reaction of many writers and speakers to the barrage of hurdles faced by the American way of life has been to, in effect, flush the entire experiment. Instead of devising real world solutions to our real world problems, a large number of thinkers and learned individuals have chosen to react to the failings of America and other nations which share its basic ideals by creating, either as intentions or as realities, alternate versions of society which are almost always rooted in the belief that these are, in some way, perfect places, or utopias. Although Odysseus accepts this hardship as a mere speed bump, many people today would not prevail through such adversity. A knack for finding the easy way out has seemed to blossom as the one uniform skill possessed by most young people today. With today s technology, a person rarely spends an afternoon by himself, and if so, would not like it. With this in mind, choosing to continue on with the journey in present times would be much harder of a decision to make than in ancient times. Another problem around school campuses is the growing rate of alcohol and drug abuse amongst students. Extreme marijuana usage has taken claim to many victims. The audience is what drives TV shows to be the entertaining platforms that they are meant to be, but they are also the most crippling aspect of the televisionitself. If I wanted to pitch a TV show to a TV network, the script would be immediately thrown in the trash. This is because I am nowhere to be found in the hierarchy of the television network. The television hierarchy makes it almost impossible for lesser known writers and producers to release their work on popular networks. Also, newer shows do not get as much of a fighting chance as others because these new shows must compete with other popular TV shows for the best time slots, therefore getting less viewers, increasing the chance the network pulls the plug on new shows. • 54. A Seperate-Personal Narrative I can still recall that day and its scent; the scent of freshly sharpened wooden pencils, disinfectant, old paper, and dust. The busy hustle and bustle of the halls of chattering kids walking to class and teachers shouting in different directions. All of this appeared to me highly surreal; I might have been there physically, but I was not entirely there psychologically. To me, it was all a moving picture in mute. I could see, feel, smell, and taste, but I could not listen. I was only able to perceive gabble, meaningless sounds that were meant to be words, but, unfortunately, did not make any sense. Moving to another country was something I had never considered before and it was a new experience in which I hoped to learn more about the culture ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
