Child Development Theories Within The Field Of Psychology...
As we know, there was a prominent debate on Nurture versus Nature in the field of psychology.
Psychologists fought against each other to assert their own theories and statements. Nowadays, people
have reached a consensus on this topic that the environment and the genes actually interact with each
other and eventually lead to the typical features of individuals. Evidently, parent is one key topic in
various child development theories since parents generally provide the whole living environment for
children. For example, it is one dominant component of the microsystem in Bronfenbrenner s
ecological approach.Parenting styles are referred as the general traits and characteristics of the
strategies that parents used to deal with their children. There are 4 types of parenting styles which
were divided by responsiveness and demandingness: authoritarian, authoritative, uninvolved and
permissive. And it is not surprising that different parenting styles would likely generate divergent
youth outcomes. Authoritarian parenting is known as high demandingness yet low responsiveness.
Authoritarian parents are associated with the use of both psychological control and behavioral control.
Parents will set harsh rules for their kids without any explanation or discussion. The relationship
between parents and adolescents is tense. And conflicts will burst out during adolescence in both high
intensity and high frequency. Therefore, these kinds of parenting generally have negative

Slavery In The Ancient Era Essay
Slavery in the Ancient Era
In this magnificent universe created by god which put us humans the only species in the world. Being
the only species, you would think everyone would treat each other equal. Some people treat other
people like they re not the same as them. In the ancient time, for instance in the 4th century, people
were preserved as slaves. Those people were treated way below humans and sometimes even worse
than animals. Slaves were sold to people just like how you would sell things.
They were forced to do hard labor, women s rapped, separated families and their owners did many
other horrendous things to them. Many of the slaves ended up either being killed or their harrowing
lives killed them. The proportion of slaves absorbed by domestic service must at all periods have been
considerable, for by and large, personal servants were always slaves, and they were employed in
numbers which by modern standards seem very lavish. Slavery was an efficient system back in the
ancient era especially in two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both of these city states profoundly dealt with slavery violently. In Athens, which was a democratic
state, they made decisions by the majority rule. Political oratory suggest that slaves were regarded as
natural enemies of the political order. They were kept in bondage in accordance with the laws and
customs of the city and they were, therefore, expected to hate the system that maintained their servile
status. The citizens in Athens had in mind that the slaves were not that dangerous, so no one really
commiserated them. Even though this may seem like they didn t belong there, they had no major
problems with their slaves. Slaves were to be found in most households occupied with almost any kind
of service, some were trusted to live in their own or even to take charge of their master s affairs.
Athens was actually the only city that treated them less rigid than other

Gender Roles In The Penelopiad
Human nature is a large part of our world today. In Margret Atwood s, The Penelopiad, one can see
that the roles men take have a great effect on the women. Atwood says that Human nature has not
changed in thousands of years and still to this day is correct. The Penelopiad shows how women are
belittled and the how many stereotypes are being used to describe how Penelope lived. Human nature
consists of men being the rulers and women being the caretakers, but this is problematic because
women have the same ability as men; therefore, can contribute to the betterment of society. Currently
people still see women as the ones who have to clean, cook and do the majority of housework and the
men having to do all the heavy lifting, hard working jobs

The Ancient Mariner Essay
The Ancient Mariner
Through The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Coleridge has created a masterpiece. This epic reworks the
ballad form so that it comes alive and speaks to the Romantic Age, breathing a story as strange and
delightful, mystical and wonderful as the mystery of life itself. The raw power of the language, the
startling speed at which it hurls you along and the arresting questions of the poem fill your spirit with
wonder at the operation of nature and the awesome mystery of evil.
There will always be those men whose imaginations transcend the limitations of their time. Coleridge
is such a man, with The Ancient Mariner being an imaginatively sharp ballad, in contact with mystery
and evil, with the penance and final ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By thy long grey beard and glittering eye, Now wherefore stopp st though me?
The scene is set, and already Coleridge s tightness and conciseness of narrative hastens through. This
powerful stanza and the following few paint a picture of enormous imaginative influence, as this
ancient mariner comes to a disturbing life. The strangeness, mysterious knowledge and experience and
a touch of the supernatural combine to hold the wedding guest in place he cannot choose but hear .
The eerie power of the mariner is contrasted with the joy of the wedding beginning in the distance.
Already we see that what we are entering is a world not of the ordered but the disturbing not the
controlled but the uncontrollable.
Powerful, rapid changes are undergone in the story, as we learn of a ship sailing from port and then
swept into a terrible storm and then a land of ice and snow. The romantic interest in nature is revealed
as the breathtaking wonder of massive icebergs float by in complete stillness, causing a shiver to run
down your spine.
Coleridge s sudden contrasts prove utter magic:
And now there came both mist and snow, And it grew wondrous cold: And ice, mast high, came
floating by, As green as emerald.
This stanza directly follows the intensity of the storm no time is wasted as one breathtaking detail of
nature is exchanged for another of completely different kind. Here the eerie

Are We The Dumbest Generation Analysis
Are we the Dumbest Generation? Americans today look back and realize how much technology has
advanced. The big question is whether this technology is affecting our way of thinking. Or like some
authors politicians and older generations say dumb. So why is it that we are considered the dumbest
generation, won t we just grow up and call the next generation dumb? Older generations (over 30)
believe that people under 30 are the dumbest generation, but if you think about it that s what each
generation has said about the previous, making it a pointless and incorrect statement said by the
elderly. It is said we are the dumbest generation, but that s something that is apparently said about
every generation. And that is exactly what R Smith Simpson is saying. He says there seems to be a
lack of knowledge, when people were asked questions they d reply with the thinnest recital of facts
some couldn t even discuss them at all. Although Simpson doesn t provide a direct quote to indicate
that each generation is going to be considered dumb by the previous; we take in consideration the year
he wrote this and compare it to the rest of the articles we conclude each generation will be seen as the
dumbest. (source 5) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In his article he talks about the under 30 generation actually being smarter than previous generations.
And that is because of technology something seen as a mind enabler might actually be
helpful.According to Thompson, Lunsford says that young people write more than any generation
specifically any generation before them. So if we are the dumbest generation why are we writing
more, 38 percent of it took place out of the classroom says Lunsford. Even if the writing is occurring
on facebook, through chat sessions and twitter it s still happening, and believe it or not it s benefitting
our writing. Our tone and self expression is evolving quicker and better than previous

Message Complexity Paper
Messages How does one determine the meaning of the world around them? It is not all that simple.
Messages are delivered via symbols amongst other factors such as speech, written documents, etc.
They help an individual assign meaning to the society around them. With that, a message can mean
multiple things depending on the listeners and how it is conveyed. In my case, as a Communication
major, I have learned about messages via speech giving, readings from Communication textbooks, and
in class notes. My public speaking course (Speech 105), is probably the class, within my major, that
taught me the most about delivering messages. For instance, in the class, the first speech assigned was
an impromptu speech. The other students and I had to select ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

I could stop watching a television show about astronomy and physics, for the reason that I find it too
complex. Even so, outside of the astronomy case, many complex messages can be made simpler. This
is true of a multitude of day to day interactions. Depending on a person s words, gestures, etc., a
whole message can be altered drastically and made up of many layers. The layering of messages is a
concept that was talked about in this Sophomore Seminar class (Communication 295). Much like an
onion, messages can have a multitude of layers. Listeners and/or receivers, depending on the method
the message is delivered in, may interpret a message differently. Interpretation may even depend on
combining multiple meanings to construct a final connotation. Furthermore, the way one understands
a message, depends mostly on the way the message is received to begin

Emile Durkheim s The Elementary Forms Of The Religious Life
Émile Durkheim s The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life examines religion through a social
viewpoint, while Claude Lévi Strauss s The Savage Mind compares modern and primitive thought.
Although their topics of interest differ, both works similarly rely on science to explain their
anthropologic theories. Science serves as a useful reference point, since it embodies modern mode of
thinking with high objectivity. Therefore, these writers can expand on their analysis of other ways to
perceive the world by comparing and contrasting with science. The relations created between science
and organized human thought unravel how these anthropologists view science. Durkheim s and Levi
Strauss s allusions to science support their respective arguments about religion and mythical thought,
while revealing anthropology s general perspective of science.
Durkheim argues that religion shares fundamental qualities with science, exposing his beliefs on the
purpose of science. First, Durkheim notes, most of the time debates on the topic of religion turn
around and about on the question of whether religion can or cannot be reconciled with science
(Durkheim 419). Religion s compatibility with the modern world of science comes into question, due
to the cosmological aspects being disproved with empirical evidence. In many theorists eyes, religion
would be an internal system of beliefs expressed externally and material with rites. However,
Durkheim would contend to think about the religion

The Supply Chain Of Supply Chains
Supply chains has been relevantly defined as a system of organizations which are convoluted through
upstream and downstream linkages, in the diverse methodologies and activities that create benefit in
the form of services and products in the hands of a definitive consumer , and is therefore the sum total
of efforts in integrating a network of firms and coordination as regards information, material and
financial flows. Interestingly, the two main supply chain objectives have moved, from decreasing
operating expenses and general inventory levels, to the concerns of how to enhance the customer
service and the momentum of product delivery to the business sectors. Figure 1 schematically portrays

Uncertainties examined by supply chain:
The significant issue in the supply chain is establishing problem free and uninterrupted operation of
supply and so the function of supply chain as a defense against the uncertainties and unexpected
characters has been initiated for a long time. Figure 1 illustrates the uncertainties which are
investigated and solved by effective execution of supply chain.
In order to minimize the influence of these supply uncertainties, the supply chain managers should
recognize their origins, the desired market size, examined possible outcomes and the consequence of
their impact. Shockingly numerous supply chains will not record and track these elements that may
effects into under stock or over stock, underestimation of the investments and lead time in the
inappropriate resources for productivity enhancement. Besides these factors supply chain management
includes replenishment planning, inventory planning, warehouse management, production scheduling,
logistics and transportation operation in the auto industry.

defined as a series of operations or activities to eliminate the waste, decrease non value added (NVA)

What Justice Means to Me
What Justice Means to Me and How I Will Impact Society

University of Phoenix
This class is the first in my major of Criminal Justice, and throughout this class there will be a great
deal of valuable information obtained. Justice can have several meanings to it because all of us are
different in our own way, and we all will have different outlook on situations. Throughout this
research paper you will learn about what justice means to me, and how I think I will impact society
once I achieve my bachelor s degree in Criminal Justice. Secondly, you will be able to compare with
the remaining of the class mates to see exactly how many of our views are the same or different. Last

The reason I disagree that justice was served is because Stallworth killed a human being versus Vick
killing dogs. Stallworth should have been required to do some type of prison term for killing a human
being due to drunk driving because it still was a death involved. It shouldn t matter how much money
or fame a person may have if a crime is committed then there should be proper punishment for the
crime.
Now that I have explained two examples based on my opinion if justice was served or not I feel that I
will impact society in some way once I obtain my bachelor s degree in Criminal Justice. I will be fair
in any decision that needs to be made due to the situation of the client I may be dealing with at that
time. I will also consider trying and helping to create positive outcomes for the clients that maybe on
parole or probation at that time. I will avoid trying to be negative with the clients because they already
going to have a negative outlook about themselves in some people perspectives. I feel once they have
served their time for the crime the individual should have a second chance at regaining a positive
outcome for their life. For example: If I had a client that was charged with assault and battery and they
served their sentence and then was placed on two years of probation, I will then come up with a plan
to help the client with their

How Did King s Ability To Help The Poor
As people continued to gather in the name of equality, there were still areas that just seemed as if the
gray area just kept getting darker and darker. Dr. King spoke out for all the poor in all their hues, for
he knew if color made them different, misery and oppression made them the same (King.M King. C).
But how must one help the poor, who is entitle to receive that help and who are the ones to give that
help. The poor can stop being poor if the rich are willing to become even richer at a slower rate (King.

the ability to help people in need, to do just that. I do not believe he was just speaking on money but

Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies, By Seth Holmes
What do we expect as a life of a Mexican migrant? The American public consistently listens to the
media to these people crossing the border illegally, which is deemed as a crime. They see these people
as stealing American jobs and benefiting from government programs such as welfare. Countless
people think it was voluntary for them to come to the United State, therefore they deserve whatever
comes their way, either health problems, racism or low paying jobs. However, what countless
American people don t realize is that the majority of Mexican migrants are forced to migrate to the
United State to survive. They constantly risk their lives to cross a dangerous border in order to find the
jobs that the American people don t want to endure. In the book called Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies, the
author, Seth Holmes focus on the lives of an indigenous Mexican group called the Triquis. Throughout
the book, he focuses on the journey of the group from their hometown in Oaxaca to farms in
California and Washington. The book also emphasizes on how racism and health problems of migrant
workers have become invisible. Their health problems and their social status in the social hierarchy
are blamed on themselves because they decided to come to a place where they are seen as illegal
aliens. Instead of blaming the Triqui people of their sickness, health care facilities need to treat them
without judgement, address what exactly their sickness is as well as its structural causes. Mexican

Knowing how to identify internal strengths and weakness can be beneficial in helping to prepare for
any examination. Time management and organizational skills are a key trait that should be mastered
extensively (Shelley, 2005). The most successful students use their time wisely. An upcoming exam
can create a heavy burden. Making a realistic study schedule and having the proper study space that is
free from distractions and kept well organized is vital (Shelley, 2005). Test anxiety is a very common
trait that occurs in many people. You have spent weeks studying for the examination, covered every
single topic and read every single material having to deal with the upcoming exam. You walk into the
classroom, sit down, and retrieve all your materials that you need. The instructor hands out your exam
and gives everyone the confirmation to begin. You open up the exam and start reading the first
question, hoping to be familiar with the subject. As you read question after question, you realize that
you can t recall the answers to anything that you have just read. According to Salend (2011), this is the
time that you start to panic, your chest gets tight, you get sweaty, you start feeling overwhelmed (p.

hinder their performance and well being. Proper studying and adequate preparation can help students

Theme: The Greater Minneapolis Community Has the Resources to Reduce Youth Violence.
A consistent theme that at risk youth raise in discussions with community social workers is the desire
to have a job. Minneapolis has done a great deal of work in connecting youth to employers through

have made it challenging for MPS to keep the program staffed with teachers, relying on an

First Emperor Of China Essay
Although he did wonderful things while he was alive, the first emperor of China was not a wonderful
person. This is because of his greed, the large amount of people he executed, and his failed attempts to
live forever. But who was the first emperor of China? What kind of things did he accomplish? And
why do so many insist that he was a bad person?
The answer lies in the Period of Warring States. Before China was unified, it was a land composed of
seven independent states, they were kind of like countries. Those states were always at war for
superiority. In Chinese culture, this is known as the Period of Warring States (First Emperor of China).
In the midst of the Period of Warring States, a young merchant, Lu Buwei, was in need of a favor, so
he traveled to the state of Qin, in the North, in seek for the prince. Once he found the Prince, named
Zizhu Zheng, the merchant offered one of his mistresses in return for the favor. That mistress later
became pregnant and gave birth to the future emperor of China in 259 B.C. Rumor has it that the
father wasn t actually the prince, instead it was the merchant that lead his mother there, but either way,

Rock And Roll Music
Music makes the human body feel rewarded. When you start to hear a song or beat that is catchy, you
either sing along or move with it. Rock and roll evolved around the 1950 s and this music made
people want to sing along and move. But instead of the music, bands were more worried about their
makeup and their love lives, this is when GNR(Guns N Roses) came into play. GNR joined together in
the 80s, and they still play their music at shows, concerts, and other big events until this day. GNR
wanted to make a move forward in rock and roll due to the pitty music that they have been listening
to, and they succeeded. The band coined its name from Axl s old band, Hollywood Rose, and Tracii s
old band, L.A. Guns. Tracii had left GNR, due to an argument with Axl. He was later replaced with
one of Axl s old band mates, Slash. The band worked together and released one of the best selling

Russian Gulag Essay
The Gulags of the Soviet Union have been compared to the concentration camps of Nazi Germany, but
in reality they were worse. The Gulags were isolated prison camps peppered across Siberia. Death,
torture, and disease raged within their walls, while endless work went on outside. Gulag personnel
were cruel and unfeeling, using terrible punishment methods and playing senseless games that cost
prisoners their lives. Political enemies of the Bolshevik party made up a significant portion of the
prisoner population, with most sent to the infamous camp system Kolyma. Liberation was painfully
slow, but by 1960, all of the Gulags were gone.
The Gulags were called many things by the Soviet government, but when boiled down, they were

In addition to this, in the mindset of the day, if someone was suspected of anti Bolshevik activities,
they were automatically guilty. The investigator would look for anything he could find that could
possibly make the person guilty at all. Sometimes the investigator would take up a random piece of
literature, say it was bad, and have the suspect shipped off, even if the incriminating evidence was
something as benign as the children s story Goodnight Moon. The investigator would not be the one to
tell the suspect what he was even accused of; he would just take the evidence and people would soon
kidnap the suspect and toss him in a cattle car to Siberia, which was cramped with a mass of other
convicts. When the prisoners reached the Gulag, an official there would take everyone s valuables and
toss the convicts into cramped cells. The interrogation could start at any time. For some the
interrogations were that day, and for others it never came and their lives were lived out in the dirty
cells. When and if the interrogator got a confession out of someone, a prison sentence was read out
and the convict was sent off to the actual Gulag. Interrogation was possibly the most terrifying part of
the early Gulag prison term. The interrogator could be anyone with any type of personality, but he or

The Value Of Philosophy By Bertrand Russell
The essay The Value of Philosophy by Bertrand Russell suggests that many practical people view
philosophy as rather useless, because these people are according to Bertrand Russell operating both
with wrong conceptions about the ends of life and wrong conceptions about what goods philosophy
strives to achieve. According to Russell the value of philosophy is in what it does for the person who
studies it. He makes the point that goods of the mind are as important in life as goods of the body. He
says that the main value of philosophy is that it enlarges one s thoughts, brings one into union with the
not Self , and helps us avoid being caught in narrowness as human beings. His main ideas are that
philosophy is to be studied to enrich our intellects, diminish our dogmatism, and make us citizens of
the universe.
In the essay, Russell presents the study of philosophy as a valuable undertaking, even though it does
not directly help the whole world or increase one s material wealth. The value is to be found for the
student of philosophy herself or himself. This value is primarily found in the intellectual development
that is available for those who undertake the study philosophy. They can escape narrowness,
dogmatism, and narrowness as they become citizens of the world, with enriched intellectual
capacities. Russell concludes with the idea that the mind becomes enlarged through the study of
philosophy.

Retirement Is An Important Life Transition
Retirement is recognised as being an important life transition (Szinovacz, 1980), associated with a
number of adjustments including social roles, income and daily routine adaption s (Pinquart Schindler,
2007). Although there is no single definition of what retirement is within existing literature (Denton
Spencer, 2009), it can arguably be best understood as an subjective journey involving a psychosocial
transition rather than a single event of exiting work or an objective life transition (Matour Prout, 2007,
Kim Moen, 2002). Future retirees consider retirement to be a huge decision where they envisage what
their daily life would be after exiting the work force, as well as the physical and emotional effort to
make the transition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, due to the limited qualitative research, quantitative research has been supplemented to
provide an understanding of the retirement transition. Even though quantitative literature will be
reviewed, a critical stance is taken due to the different assumptions and philosophical underpinnings
which are highlighted throughout.
Firstly, retiree s can experience some losses during the retirement transition. It can be suggested that
work is more than just bringing home an income (Kleiber Linde, 2014). For example, many
individuals significantly identify with a work role which may have implications when adjusting to
retirement life. Osborne (2012) suggests during the retirement transition, individuals can experience
partial identity disruption. Identity refers to cognitive and effective meanings that an individual
attributes to one s self in a role (Reitzes Mutran, 2006, p. 336). One explanation of this disruption is
provided by role theory (George, 1993) which suggests individuals former roles within employment
may form an integral part of their identity (Price, 2003). Therefore, it is suggested that psychological
distress can occur due to the loss in retiree s previous work role which may disrupt their identity (Kim
Moen, 2002). However,

Globalisation and Government Regulation in Uk
Introduction ‘Think global , ‘Act local is a common phrase used by executives, companies in the
UK have been heavily impacted by globalisation due to the benefits of attractive cheap labour
available overseas, establish subsidiaries to overcome exportation, producing globally standardised
products to achieve economies of scale and gaining a market share in local/region of a country. This is
the age of globalisation, a term which has numerous definition (Dunning, 1997), but generally refers
to a process of tighter international linkages on a world wide scale (De Wit and Meyer, 1998). On the
other hand, UK has also become a major host country for foreign multinational investment. Corporate

Traditional manufacturing countries mainly situated in the South east Asia and Eastern Europe have
gained corporate interests in attractive cheap labour (Meffert and Bloch, 1991). The loss of jobs
contributes to the already worsening problem of unemployment and harms regional economy. A BBC
report (Davis, 2003) shows that Factory production fell by 4% in 2002, the largest annual slump since
1991 Corporate Insolvencies has occurred because companies are unable to keep up with global
integration. MG Rover went into administration on April 8, with the loss of over 5,000 jobs (Harwood,
2005) Similar threats are also emitted from the service industry where there seems to be a trend
towards outsourcing services to low labour cost countries e.g. call centres to India. Such business
voyage is encouraging as BT s turnover increased by 11 percent in 2002 (Turner and Gardiner, 2007).
Again the argument is about job loss; in addition, the pressure to out source may cause businesses to
drive down ‘real pay levels in order to compete more effectively (Blackwood, 2006). On the other
hand, foreign investments have also created jobs in the UK. The amount of opportunities created
depends on • Direct jobs: size of the foreign owned industry and the intensity of its production
process. • In direct jobs: referring to the connections with local suppliers and their reputation. The

Intelligence Collection and Analysis Demands for Irregular Warfare According to Reiley (2008)
defining the sociological makeup target area is the most important aspect to conducting irregular

to the unpredictability and small units, the analyst needs to be much more precise and be constantly

Christian Dualism Research Paper
Christian theology developed in the very act of responding to pagan objections remarks Gonzalez
(63). As the church grew the practice of theology resulted in many interpretations and threatened
traditions held about the nature of God. Gnosticism made inroads claiming that Christ was a
messenger who carried gnosis so that humanity could return to its spiritual origins (72). It viewed the
physical world as evil so the form of Jesus body was open to interpretation consistent with the thought
that it wasn t physical like the bodies of other people and couldn t die so it also could not rise again.
Some held that life in the world should discipline our bodies while others held that the human spirit
was inviolable and life in the body should be unrestrained. This duality of physical and spiritual also
gave rise to Marcionism.
Marcion believed that the God of the Old Testament (Yahweh) and of the New Testament (Father of
Christ) were two different gods. Because he viewed Yahweh as the creator, he rejected the incarnation
since it would have made Jesus subject to an inferior god. He established a church that used the letters
of Paul and the Gospel of Luke and explained away Old Testament references by blaming them on
Judaizers (Gonzalez 74). These dualistic viewpoints directly relate to ... Show more content on

The Need to Understand the Phenomenon of Bilingualism,...
Introduction There are not so many places in the world left, where the population is using only one
their native language. People are traveling, migrating and trying to adapt to the new environment.
Knowing more than one language became very common thing. Many schools all over the world
practicing studies of one, some times several, foreigner languages, furthermore sometimes the
language of education differs from the native language of the students. The ability of using more than
one language, or so called shifting language codes, gives us an opportunity to make possible
communication between people with different dimensions of psychology, culture and social settings.
Knowledge of more than one language facilitates the perception of another culture, makes possible
communication in modern information space. The need to understand the phenomenon of bilingualism
in the context of the development of cultural values is the major task of the present stage of
development of civilization. Problem area Bilinguality is the psychological state of an individual who

The Pros And Cons Of The BP Oil Spill
It is well known that in 2010 a oil spill occurred in the Gulf of Mexico. The oil rig Deepwater
Horizon, owned by BP, exploded and sank and caused a continued oil leak that released amlost 5
million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, the worst oil spill in U.S. history (Biello). In an address
delivered inJune of 2010, President Obama called the oil spill the worst environmental disaster
America has ever faced (Obama). Given the magnitude of the spill, and the media attention
surrounding the issue, the entire topic became an emotional subject and strong opinions were formed

While this fear seems valid when constructed without context, applying the specifics of the BP oil
spill show this line of reasoning to be a slippery slope fallacy. Spending 58 million dollars on one
hotel now will not lead to the complete squandering of the rest of the restoration resources simply
because, in comparison to the total funds, 58 million dollars is a small sum. When viewed through the
everyday experiences of a regular civilian, 58 million dollars is an almost incomprehensible amount of
money. However, The Telograph states that BP has spent 28 billion dollars on containment and
cleaning efforts and set aside another 20 billion as a compensation fund (Sherwell and Lawler). When
set against a total effort of 48 billion dollars that may be contributed from BP alone, 58 million dollars
accounts for roughly 0.12% of the potential resources dedicated towards the aftermath of the spill in
the Gulf. Given in figures more consistent with the experience of the average person, this is the
equivalent of about 60 dollars out of a 50 thousand dollar salary. While an ideological claim could be
made that all resources should be used on areas impacted physically and directly, the actual cost of the
hotel is too small to be an influence on wide scale decision making for the larger recovery effort

A Formal Description For A Youth Gang
Adolescence is a time of life spanning from the ages of 13 till about 25 when the brain has fully
developed. It is a period of life characterized by many up and downs where the individual experiences
multiple personal changes (Gladding, 2012, p. 255). In this time of turbulence young individuals may
enter into groups that society often refers to as gangs. It is accurate to say that gangs contribute
immensely to crime and delinquency however, to say that this is the purpose of all gangs would be
misleading. Gangs should instead be seen as existing on a continuum, some ranging from groups of
peers who spend time together and may get into trouble, to others who participate in more serious
crimes (Gorden, 2000, p. 4). In terms of a specific definition for a gang, there really is not one that has
been fully accepted by all. That being said looking at research a formal description for a youth gang
perhaps would be that it is a self formed group of individuals, consisting of three or more members,
generally ages 13 to 25, who share a sense of identity, and may or may not take part in delinquent
behaviour or crime (Preston Carr Stewart, 2012. P. 1 2). Often time s news stories claim that youth
gangs are on the rise and must be stopped and the members disbanded. However, to pursue this would
be saying that the formation of all gangs are negative and solely for the purpose of delinquent
behaviour and crime, which is not always the case. For society to take an active approach on

In the film s final scene the two meet up and are free from their life of isolation, law, hate, and racism.
The film has some additional storytelling that I would like to discuss. The Shawshank Redemption is
done in chronological order, but there are some parts when the characters flash back to earlier times in
their live so you can understand what is happening in the film. This is done so the viewer still has an
easy way to follow the movie. The characters of the film face both internal and external conflict. The
internal conflict is should I continue this life when I know I am innocent, and the external conflict is
from the prison, the prisoners, and the prison staff. The film does contain symbolism. An example of
the symbolism is when the warden learns of his fate and his last judgment by reading the morning
newspaper of himself and the prison being corrupt. Additionally, symbolism is used with the holy
bible the warden reads; when he finds the hammer that Andy uses to dig out of the prison. There is a
passage from Exodus that is used to symbolize the warden s salvation and Andy s escape. Also, there
is a metaphor that I remember and it happens when the librarian (Brooks Hatlen) is freed from jail and
he takes his own life. At the same time he hangs himself his bird (Jake) fly s away and is freed. The
metaphor is that the librarian is free of his lifelong nightmare of being told what

Maclean uses the recurring climatic challenges as his own special trademarks the threat of impersonal
climatic forces (Lee 362). The added trademark combines with the dangers of the plot to force the
protagonist through a gauntlet of dangers in order to complete the mission. The recurring trademark is
evident in almost all Maclean novels, as the climactic forces are directly responsible for almost all the
challenges the protagonist must face during the rising action. The forces are not limited to freezing
temperatures and roaring oceans but they are also in the form of dense, lush, and dangerous rain
forests as seen in River of Death. In River of Death, the protagonist as well as other major characters
must also face an array of environmental conflicts, primarily, the lush and dangerous Amazonian river
system and forest surrounding. Hamilton, the protagonist, is a brave and respected man, However,
after many years of entering the dense rainforest and returning with ancient Greek gold coins, he is
rumored to have found The Lost City. Due to his supposed findings, he has attracted a greedy wealthy
man who is willing to pay a large amount of money for Hamilton to take him and his group to the
fabled gold city. Hamilton agrees and shortly after entering the jungle, the characters are exposed to
the ever present dangers that the Amazon presents. Maclean describes this harsh terrain as tens of
thousands of square miles in that virtually unknown part of the world: all

Wisconsin s Collective Bargaining Needs to End Essay
Lately in the news, there has been talk about budget and money crises; these problems have been in
many states and most recently in Washington D.C and Wisconsin. Governor of Wisconsin Scott
Walker has decided to address these budget predicaments by sharply curtailing the Wisconsin public
sector workers collective bargaining rights. The reaction from people in Wisconsin has been mostly
negative. However, Governor Walker was right in making cuts in the pay of public sector workers and
taking away their right to collective bargaining to help pay off the budget. The state has a $137 million
deficit, so curtailing collective bargaining rights will save the state $30 million in the current budget,
which ends June first. Collective bargaining ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There were state wide school cancellations; teachers would call in sick to take part in the protests.
Everyone involved in these demonstrations were all protesting the same issue: the fact that the
Governor of Wisconsin was going to take away their rights to collective bargaining; the irony of this is
that these protesters weren t also just from Wisconson, they were being sent in droves from different
states to support the union. The fear was that this could happen in their respective states. He says that
he needs to take this right away because in the upcoming biannual budget he would be introducing
there will be a $3.6 million deficit that will need to be bridged. He believes that it will be essential in
order to allow the state to actually balance its budget without laying any workers off (video citation)
The controversy behind this is that the people of Wisconsin believe that if the Governor takes away
collective bargaining, he will take away the rights of the people, especially public sector workers, such
as teachers and nurses. Governor Walker though is correct in taking this drastic measure because the
state currently has a $137 million deficit. They need some way to bridge this deficit, so why not take

groups and holds them in high regard to himself.6 This is very far from any kind of truth at all.
I believe that this was such a big deal for groups when the movie came out because the film made it
seem as though both men wanted a somewhat peaceful solution to obtaining what they desired when
in fact, that was the last thing they wanted. Both men were very respectable from what I can tell, but

I Want To Join 2XU Essay
Brian,
I believe in being honest and forthright even when it is a tough conversation.
2XU is a small office and during the week, Chris Sinkovich had conversations that were sadly, were
easily over heard. I am aware you re considering a plan to terminate my employment with 2XU and
make other changes with the company structure.
You and I haven t had a chance to spend a great deal of time together thus far and allow us to fully
connect and see each s skills and experience which is a shame. I came to 2XU wanting to share the
marketing knowledge and work ethic I have and help drive the U.S. market for this company. During
the past 15 months, we ve had some great successes as a team and as of late, are staring to see strong
momentum on many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, I made the commitment to join 2XU because I believed it offered me something I wouldn t
have at a bigger company greater ownership to make an impact. I also believe in the strong growth
potential 2XU has in the U.S. market and I m excited to be a part of that.
I believed that 2XU was equally devoted to me being a long term part of the company, so I committed
to becoming part of the company.
Now that I m likely going to be terminated, I would like to have an open and honest conversation to
understand what is the basses for that. I would also like to know what level of severance I will receive.
Additionally, in my employment agreement, there was in inclusion of a 20% bonus based on meeting
performance goals. A formal review of my performance was never done with Anthony.
I understand in you re coming to 2XU that you see areas that you want make improvements. In our
various conversations, you and have agreed on many of those key areas and I thought we would have
been able to tackle them.
In regards to outstanding projects I ve been working on, many of these are with people I ve established
relationships with and my reputation is involved. I will work to bring them to a close and/or provide a

Contribution Of An Ethnographic Research On Friendship
Throughout this essay I will be evaluating the contribution of an ethnographic approach to research on
friendship. I will be looking at, and including evidence to support both sides of the argument as to
whether or not this research method is in fact useful when it comes to gaining knowledge about
friendship. As well as evaluating this method, I will compare it against others to reflect on the
strengths, weaknesses and the typical data collected. I will look at some of the questions about
friendship that have been addressed, and then whether this is the best method or if there are others that
could have been more suitable.
Ethnography is a qualitative method of research in which the researcher takes part in the activities of a
group such that they are able to complete their observations over a period of time in a natural, real life
environment.
When it comes to investigating friendship, one question that has been raised is what is the role of
friendship in the life of a 13 year old? . Several sources of data include ethnographic notes taken
whilst spending time with a group of friends during school lunch breaks and diary/blog entries etc.
Firstly, in this case the researcher would need to carefully consider the strengths and weaknesses of
each type of data, for example, when looking at a blog the information/data available is likely to be
information that the author wants to share with a wider audience whereas a diary entry is more private.
In this case, both documents

How Is Iago A Tragic Hero
Honest Iago is maybe one of the most intriguing characters in the tragic play Othello, by William
Shakespeare. Using many skillfully planned out words and actions, Iago easily manipulates others to
do things that benefit him and lets him come closer and closer to achieving his goals. Iago is the main
cause of tragic events, leading Othello and others towards their tragic ends.
This man is far from your standard tragic villain. Iago s role in the play is rather special and unique,
and definitely not what the reader or may be expecting. Iago is a very intelligent character. He is a
very skilled judge of characters and their skillsets and will often use this to his own advantage. As an
example, Iago knows Roderigo is very much in love with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And during this whole time, Iago is planning the demise of Cassio, his supposed friend. On the night
of Cassio s watch, Iago convinces him to take another drink, knowing very well that it will make him
very drunk. Cassio just follows along, though he says, I ll do t, but it dislikes me. [Act II, Scene III,
Line 37] Iago is able to make him defy his own reasoning to take another drink! Crafty, is this Iago.
When Roderigo follows through with the plan Iago has set on him, Cassio is made to look like an
irresponsible fool, resulting in his termination as lieutenant. After this incident, Iago sets another of his
plans in motion by telling Cassio to beg Desdemona to help his cause, saying, she holds it a vice in her
goodness not to do more than she is requested. [Act II, Scene III, Line 287] And thus, Cassio is set on
a dark path which leads to trouble and mischief. Yet, Cassio follows it blindly telling Iago, You advise
me well. [Act II, Scene III, Line 292] With this, Cassio is eventually led into a trap where Roderigo
maims him, and all that time, Iago his friend is behind it

The Role Of The British Actress And Playwright
An examination of the evolving role of the British actress and playwright within the early 18th and
19th centuries and the changing function of gender in performance.
In terms of its theory, [socialist feminism] aims to analyse and understand the way in which relations
based on class interact with relations based on gender at both the individual and social level. Socialist
feminism recognizes that there are issues over which solidarity between women can cut across class,
cultural and time barriers. Michelene Wandor on Socialist Feminism

The title of the performer, until only decades ago, was denoted by the individual s gender: the actor
being male and the actress being female (gender performing function). In recent times the function of
the performer has become the sole focus with the introduction of the term actor as a universal label for
all thespians. This essay will attempt to assess the voice and roles of the two aforementioned women
in an effort to examine the evolution of the female actor and playwright within their individual period
and the changing function of gender in performance.
The formal entrance of women on the stage in England is usually credited to the epoch of the
Restoration. Amongst the turbulence of the era spiked with civil unrest, religious upheaval, the first
regicide noted in modern history and the initial construction of the commonwealth s skeletal
democratic foundations, the Restoration primarily bore witness to a dramatic cultural revolution. After
the death of Elizabeth I and the accession of James I of Scotland, the era of reason gave way to an era
of faith . The competing ecclesiastical ideologies of the catholic church and the monarchy s new

The Ethics Of Animal Research Essay
PHILOSOPHY 106 Is the use of Animals in Biomedical Research Morally Justified?
Animals have been treated immorally since the beginning of time, this is shown by hunting, farming,
trapping, testing of products and biomedical research etc. As humans, majority of us claim animals as
our resources as we use them for eating, making clothing, (leather and fur jackets, shoes) working
animals, as a means of transport, animal testing etc. In this essay I will discuss the use of animals in
biomedical research and state why some believe it is morally justified. I will then present an objection
to argue why biomedical research is morally unjustified and why I believe this. I will write this essay
using resources from Tom Regan s, The case for animal rights , David DeGrazia s, The ethics of
animal research: what are the prospects for agreement? , Baruch A. Brody s, Defending animal
research: An international perspective and Peter Singer s, Animal Liberation at 30 . I will then come to
my own conclusion based on the different perspectives from the above philosophers and by using my
own knowledge on the issue.
In this first half of the essay I will discuss the different viewpoints from the philosophers Regan,
DeGrazia and Singer on their perspectives on why biomedical research is morally unjustified. In Tom
Regan s The Case for Animal Rights he argues that animals have a quality that can t be decreased to
their utility and puts forth a defense to eliminate harm brought about

A Guided Epiphany By Mary Joyce
A Guided Epiphany
In Eveline the main character, Eveline, lives a terrible life with a stern father, a miserable job, and a
dreary home. When she is given the opportunity to leave her awful life and start a new life with her
partner Frank, she rejects the offer and stays in Ireland. Immediately this presents the reader with an
apparent paradox. Why did Eveline stay? Wasn t her life terrible? It is not until the reader digs a little
deeper into Eveline does the paradox solve itself. Joyce uses various literary techniques to justify why
Eveline did not leave with Frank.
In order to solve the paradox of Eveline, Joyce uses sentence structure to show the importance of
various characters to Eveline. The father in Eveline is given a lengthy amount of the story and longer
sentences. Sentences such as He said she used to squander the money, ... he was usually fairly bad on
Saturday night. (Joyce 65 68), and When they were growing up he had never gone for her ... for her
dead mother s sake. (55 58) contain forty words and forty eight words respectfully. Frank at the
beginning is given slightly longer sentences at his first introduction. The third sentence in Frank s
introduction, She was to go away with him by the night boat to be his wife and to live with him in
Buenos Ayres where he had a home waiting for her. (80 82), is thirty words long. As the story
progresses Frank s sentences becoming increasingly shorter and shorter. After Eveline remembers her
father caring for

RAPPING ABOUT RAP Essay
Rap music is on its way to becoming one of the most popular forms of music on the market today.
Although rap has only been popular for the last 15 years, it can be traced back to the days of slavery
and even further to the tribes of Africa. Rap is used now as it was used for the past few centuries, as a
form of communication. This music has been a way for the young African American s to speak out
about their lives and the struggles they go through. Like rock n roll and other forms of music that
achieve national attention, rap is being blamed for corrupting our youth. There is a new type of rap
music out called quot;Gangster Rap quot;. This form of rap music is not the same and should not be
compared with rap ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another link from African music to Rap is in the sounds that are used. It is said that quot;Grand
Wizard quot; invented quot;scratching quot; while practicing at home (Greenberg 15), however Andrei
Strobert, a Brooklyn based scholar, musician and artist was quoted in an article by Harry Allen about
the roots of rap music, quot; The scratch that you hear in hip hop is similar to the African sekere quot;.
She goes on to explain, quot;A sekere is a big gourd with beads around it quot;. She also noted that
many of the sounds rappers use in her studio are from the Imo tribe of Nigeria (80).
There are many comparisons between rap and African music but one comparison you don t hear about
too often is the influence by Puerto Ricans living in New York at the time rap started popping up. Juan
Flores brings up this comparison in his article,
quot;Recital of decimals and aguinaldos in the Puerto Rican folk tradition involved methods of
improvisation and alternation much like those typical of rap performances, while the tongue twisting
(trabalengua) style of some plena singing is an even more direct antecedent. More important, perhaps,
just as with doo wop and rhumba, there is a fascinating quot;fit quot; between Puerto Rican quot;clave
quot; and characteristic rap rhythms quot;(583).
Puerto Rican s also played a big part in the influence of break dancing, a big part of

  • 3. Child Development Theories Within The Field Of Psychology... As we know, there was a prominent debate on Nurture versus Nature in the field of psychology. Psychologists fought against each other to assert their own theories and statements. Nowadays, people have reached a consensus on this topic that the environment and the genes actually interact with each other and eventually lead to the typical features of individuals. Evidently, parent is one key topic in various child development theories since parents generally provide the whole living environment for children. For example, it is one dominant component of the microsystem in Bronfenbrenner s ecological approach.Parenting styles are referred as the general traits and characteristics of the strategies that parents used to deal with their children. There are 4 types of parenting styles which were divided by responsiveness and demandingness: authoritarian, authoritative, uninvolved and permissive. And it is not surprising that different parenting styles would likely generate divergent youth outcomes. Authoritarian parenting is known as high demandingness yet low responsiveness. Authoritarian parents are associated with the use of both psychological control and behavioral control. Parents will set harsh rules for their kids without any explanation or discussion. The relationship between parents and adolescents is tense. And conflicts will burst out during adolescence in both high intensity and high frequency. Therefore, these kinds of parenting generally have negative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Slavery In The Ancient Era Essay Slavery in the Ancient Era In this magnificent universe created by god which put us humans the only species in the world. Being the only species, you would think everyone would treat each other equal. Some people treat other people like they re not the same as them. In the ancient time, for instance in the 4th century, people were preserved as slaves. Those people were treated way below humans and sometimes even worse than animals. Slaves were sold to people just like how you would sell things. They were forced to do hard labor, women s rapped, separated families and their owners did many other horrendous things to them. Many of the slaves ended up either being killed or their harrowing lives killed them. The proportion of slaves absorbed by domestic service must at all periods have been considerable, for by and large, personal servants were always slaves, and they were employed in numbers which by modern standards seem very lavish. Slavery was an efficient system back in the ancient era especially in two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both of these city states profoundly dealt with slavery violently. In Athens, which was a democratic state, they made decisions by the majority rule. Political oratory suggest that slaves were regarded as natural enemies of the political order. They were kept in bondage in accordance with the laws and customs of the city and they were, therefore, expected to hate the system that maintained their servile status. The citizens in Athens had in mind that the slaves were not that dangerous, so no one really commiserated them. Even though this may seem like they didn t belong there, they had no major problems with their slaves. Slaves were to be found in most households occupied with almost any kind of service, some were trusted to live in their own or even to take charge of their master s affairs. • 5. Gender Roles In The Penelopiad Human nature is a large part of our world today. In Margret Atwood s, The Penelopiad, one can see that the roles men take have a great effect on the women. Atwood says that Human nature has not changed in thousands of years and still to this day is correct. The Penelopiad shows how women are belittled and the how many stereotypes are being used to describe how Penelope lived. Human nature consists of men being the rulers and women being the caretakers, but this is problematic because women have the same ability as men; therefore, can contribute to the betterment of society. Currently people still see women as the ones who have to clean, cook and do the majority of housework and the men having to do all the heavy lifting, hard working jobs ... • 6. The Ancient Mariner Essay The Ancient Mariner Through The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Coleridge has created a masterpiece. This epic reworks the ballad form so that it comes alive and speaks to the Romantic Age, breathing a story as strange and delightful, mystical and wonderful as the mystery of life itself. The raw power of the language, the startling speed at which it hurls you along and the arresting questions of the poem fill your spirit with wonder at the operation of nature and the awesome mystery of evil. There will always be those men whose imaginations transcend the limitations of their time. By thy long grey beard and glittering eye, Now wherefore stopp st though me? The scene is set, and already Coleridge s tightness and conciseness of narrative hastens through. This powerful stanza and the following few paint a picture of enormous imaginative influence, as this ancient mariner comes to a disturbing life. The strangeness, mysterious knowledge and experience and a touch of the supernatural combine to hold the wedding guest in place he cannot choose but hear . The eerie power of the mariner is contrasted with the joy of the wedding beginning in the distance. Already we see that what we are entering is a world not of the ordered but the disturbing not the controlled but the uncontrollable. Powerful, rapid changes are undergone in the story, as we learn of a ship sailing from port and then swept into a terrible storm and then a land of ice and snow. The romantic interest in nature is revealed as the breathtaking wonder of massive icebergs float by in complete stillness, causing a shiver to run down your spine. Coleridge s sudden contrasts prove utter magic: And now there came both mist and snow, And it grew wondrous cold: And ice, mast high, came floating by, As green as emerald. This stanza directly follows the intensity of the storm no time is wasted as one breathtaking detail of nature is exchanged for another of completely different kind. Here the eerie ... • 8. Are We The Dumbest Generation Analysis Are we the Dumbest Generation? Americans today look back and realize how much technology has advanced. The big question is whether this technology is affecting our way of thinking. Or like some authors politicians and older generations say dumb. So why is it that we are considered the dumbest generation, won t we just grow up and call the next generation dumb? Older generations (over 30) believe that people under 30 are the dumbest generation, but if you think about it that s what each generation has said about the previous, making it a pointless and incorrect statement said by the elderly. It is said we are the dumbest generation, but that s something that is apparently said about every generation. And that is exactly what R Smith Simpson is saying. He says there seems to be a lack of knowledge, when people were asked questions they d reply with the thinnest recital of facts some couldn t even discuss them at all. Although Simpson doesn t provide a direct quote to indicate that each generation is going to be considered dumb by the previous; we take in consideration the year he wrote this and compare it to the rest of the articles we conclude each generation will be seen as the dumbest. • 9. Message Complexity Paper Messages How does one determine the meaning of the world around them? It is not all that simple. Messages are delivered via symbols amongst other factors such as speech, written documents, etc. They help an individual assign meaning to the society around them. With that, a message can mean multiple things depending on the listeners and how it is conveyed. In my case, as a Communication major, I have learned about messages via speech giving, readings from Communication textbooks, and in class notes. My public speaking course (Speech 105), is probably the class, within my major, that taught me the most about delivering messages. For instance, in the class, the first speech assigned was an impromptu speech. The other students and I had to select ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The layering of messages is a concept that was talked about in this Sophomore Seminar class (Communication 295). Much like an onion, messages can have a multitude of layers. Listeners and/or receivers, depending on the method the message is delivered in, may interpret a message differently. Interpretation may even depend on combining multiple meanings to construct a final connotation. • 10. Emile Durkheim s The Elementary Forms Of The Religious Life Émile Durkheim s The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life examines religion through a social viewpoint, while Claude Lévi Strauss s The Savage Mind compares modern and primitive thought. Although their topics of interest differ, both works similarly rely on science to explain their anthropologic theories. Science serves as a useful reference point, since it embodies modern mode of thinking with high objectivity. Therefore, these writers can expand on their analysis of other ways to perceive the world by comparing and contrasting with science. The relations created between science and organized human thought unravel how these anthropologists view science. Durkheim s and Levi Strauss s allusions to science support their respective arguments about religion and mythical thought, while revealing anthropology s general perspective of science. Durkheim argues that religion shares fundamental qualities with science, exposing his beliefs on the purpose of science. First, Durkheim notes, most of the time debates on the topic of religion turn around and about on the question of whether religion can or cannot be reconciled with science (Durkheim 419). Religion s compatibility with the modern world of science comes into question, due to the cosmological aspects being disproved with empirical evidence. In many theorists eyes, religion would be an internal system of beliefs expressed externally and material with rites. However, Durkheim would contend to think about the religion ... Stallworth should have been required to do some type of prison term for killing a human being due to drunk driving because it still was a death involved. I will be fair in any decision that needs to be made due to the situation of the client I may be dealing with at that time. The American public consistently listens to the media to these people crossing the border illegally, which is deemed as a crime. They see these people as stealing American jobs and benefiting from government programs such as welfare. Countless people think it was voluntary for them to come to the United State, therefore they deserve whatever comes their way, either health problems, racism or low paying jobs. However, what countless American people don t realize is that the majority of Mexican migrants are forced to migrate to the United State to survive. They constantly risk their lives to cross a dangerous border in order to find the jobs that the American people don t want to endure. In the book called Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies, the author, Seth Holmes focus on the lives of an indigenous Mexican group called the Triquis. Throughout the book, he focuses on the journey of the group from their hometown in Oaxaca to farms in California and Washington. The book also emphasizes on how racism and health problems of migrant workers have become invisible. Their health problems and their social status in the social hierarchy are blamed on themselves because they decided to come to a place where they are seen as illegal aliens. Instead of blaming the Triqui people of their sickness, health care facilities need to treat them without judgement, address what exactly their sickness is as well as its structural causes. A consistent theme that at risk youth raise in discussions with community social workers is the desire to have a job. Minneapolis has done a great deal of work in connecting youth to employers through program such as Step up and Pathways . These programs give any adolescence, at risk or not, a unique opportunity to build purpose and nurture relationships with potential future employers. These programs help to create positive life trajectories for youth. The Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) has operated a highly successful afterschool program for years. Over the last 15 years, the funding for the program has declined precipitously. Limited funds have made it challenging for MPS to keep the program staffed with teachers, relying on an inconsistent flow of volunteers instead. The afterschool program is an invaluable resource in the effort to reduce youth violence. Instead of unsupervised and unstructured time, the program keeps youth focused on completing homework, developing skills, exposes them to mentors, and allows parents to rest assured that their children are safe while they are still at ... This is because of his greed, the large amount of people he executed, and his failed attempts to live forever. But who was the first emperor of China? What kind of things did he accomplish? And why do so many insist that he was a bad person? The answer lies in the Period of Warring States. Before China was unified, it was a land composed of seven independent states, they were kind of like countries. Those states were always at war for superiority. In Chinese culture, this is known as the Period of Warring States (First Emperor of China). In the midst of the Period of Warring States, a young merchant, Lu Buwei, was in need of a favor, so he traveled to the state of Qin, in the North, in seek for the prince. Once he found the Prince, named Zizhu Zheng, the merchant offered one of his mistresses in return for the favor. Rock and roll evolved around the 1950 s and this music made people want to sing along and move. But instead of the music, bands were more worried about their makeup and their love lives, this is when GNR(Guns N Roses) came into play. The Gulags were isolated prison camps peppered across Siberia. Death, torture, and disease raged within their walls, while endless work went on outside. Political enemies of the Bolshevik party made up a significant portion of the prisoner population, with most sent to the infamous camp system Kolyma. The Value Of Philosophy By Bertrand Russell The essay The Value of Philosophy by Bertrand Russell suggests that many practical people view philosophy as rather useless, because these people are according to Bertrand Russell operating both with wrong conceptions about the ends of life and wrong conceptions about what goods philosophy strives to achieve. According to Russell the value of philosophy is in what it does for the person who studies it. He makes the point that goods of the mind are as important in life as goods of the body. He says that the main value of philosophy is that it enlarges one s thoughts, brings one into union with the not Self , and helps us avoid being caught in narrowness as human beings. His main ideas are that philosophy is to be studied to enrich our intellects, diminish our dogmatism, and make us citizens of the universe. In the essay, Russell presents the study of philosophy as a valuable undertaking, even though it does not directly help the whole world or increase one s material wealth. The value is to be found for the student of philosophy herself or himself. This value is primarily found in the intellectual development that is available for those who undertake the study philosophy. They can escape narrowness, dogmatism, and narrowness as they become citizens of the world, with enriched intellectual capacities. Russell concludes with the idea that the mind becomes enlarged through the study of philosophy. [PLEASE NOTE!: I have not put much commentary on the quotes here, but ... Although there is no single definition of what retirement is within existing literature (Denton Spencer, 2009), it can arguably be best understood as an subjective journey involving a psychosocial transition rather than a single event of exiting work or an objective life transition (Matour Prout, 2007, Kim Moen, 2002). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, due to the limited qualitative research, quantitative research has been supplemented to provide an understanding of the retirement transition. Even though quantitative literature will be reviewed, a critical stance is taken due to the different assumptions and philosophical underpinnings which are highlighted throughout. Firstly, retiree s can experience some losses during the retirement transition. It can be suggested that work is more than just bringing home an income (Kleiber Linde, 2014). For example, many individuals significantly identify with a work role which may have implications when adjusting to retirement life. Osborne (2012) suggests during the retirement transition, individuals can experience partial identity disruption. Identity refers to cognitive and effective meanings that an individual attributes to one s self in a role (Reitzes Mutran, 2006, p. 336). One explanation of this disruption is provided by role theory (George, 1993) which suggests individuals former roles within employment may form an integral part of their identity (Price, 2003). Therefore, it is suggested that psychological distress can occur due to the loss in retiree s previous work role which may disrupt their identity (Kim Moen, 2002). However, ... As the church grew the practice of theology resulted in many interpretations and threatened traditions held about the nature of God. Gnosticism made inroads claiming that Christ was a messenger who carried gnosis so that humanity could return to its spiritual origins (72). It viewed the physical world as evil so the form of Jesus body was open to interpretation consistent with the thought that it wasn t physical like the bodies of other people and couldn t die so it also could not rise again. Some held that life in the world should discipline our bodies while others held that the human spirit was inviolable and life in the body should be unrestrained. This duality of physical and spiritual also gave rise to Marcionism. Marcion believed that the God of the Old Testament (Yahweh) and of the New Testament (Father of Christ) were two different gods. Because he viewed Yahweh as the creator, he rejected the incarnation since it would have made Jesus subject to an inferior god. Spending 58 million dollars on one hotel now will not lead to the complete squandering of the rest of the restoration resources simply because, in comparison to the total funds, 58 million dollars is a small sum. When viewed through the everyday experiences of a regular civilian, 58 million dollars is an almost incomprehensible amount of money. However, The Telograph states that BP has spent 28 billion dollars on containment and cleaning efforts and set aside another 20 billion as a compensation fund (Sherwell and Lawler). It is a period of life characterized by many up and downs where the individual experiences multiple personal changes (Gladding, 2012, p. 255). In this time of turbulence young individuals may enter into groups that society often refers to as gangs. It is accurate to say that gangs contribute immensely to crime and delinquency however, to say that this is the purpose of all gangs would be misleading. Gangs should instead be seen as existing on a continuum, some ranging from groups of peers who spend time together and may get into trouble, to others who participate in more serious crimes (Gorden, 2000, p. 4). In terms of a specific definition for a gang, there really is not one that has been fully accepted by all. P. 1 2). Often time s news stories claim that youth gangs are on the rise and must be stopped and the members disbanded. This is done so the viewer still has an easy way to follow the movie. The characters of the film face both internal and external conflict. They both approved of the distribution and, at that point, I wrote out the checks. Along with the checks, I included a letter explaining that this is the first distribution of three. The next distribution will distribute the last of the estate property, and the third distribution was to close out what remains in the estate account. To get the beneficiaries feeling giddy, I told them that the first distribution consisted of only the proceeds from the sale of the rental property, which accounted for about a third of the estate value. So, after reading this letter, I am sure the beneficiaries would feel pleasantly surprised. If not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Review Of The Guns Of Navarone, River Of Death, Break... The Development of Major Characters in Alistair Maclean Novels British author Alistair Maclean once declared, We are all brave men and we are all afraid, and what the world calls a brave man, he is too brave and afraid like the all rest of us. Only he is brave for five minutes longer. Throughout his novels, The Guns of Navarone, River of Death, Break Heart Pass, Maclean puts his characters through a grueling set of challenges, which they must face with bravery and intellect. Bravery is a recurring concept in MacLean s novels. Yet, Maclean places more emphasis on how the character develops through these conflicts. The conflicts that Maclean displays are physically, as well as mentally straining. Due to the arduous struggles that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Maclean uses the recurring climatic challenges as his own special trademarks the threat of impersonal climatic forces (Lee 362). The added trademark combines with the dangers of the plot to force the protagonist through a gauntlet of dangers in order to complete the mission. The recurring trademark is evident in almost all Maclean novels, as the climactic forces are directly responsible for almost all the challenges the protagonist must face during the rising action. The forces are not limited to freezing temperatures and roaring oceans but they are also in the form of dense, lush, and dangerous rain forests as seen in River of Death. In River of Death, the protagonist as well as other major characters must also face an array of environmental conflicts, primarily, the lush and dangerous Amazonian river system and forest surrounding. Hamilton, the protagonist, is a brave and respected man, However, after many years of entering the dense rainforest and returning with ancient Greek gold coins, he is rumored to have found The Lost City. Due to his supposed findings, he has attracted a greedy wealthy man who is willing to pay a large amount of money for Hamilton to take him and his group to the fabled gold city. Hamilton agrees and shortly after entering the jungle, the characters are exposed to the ever present dangers that the Amazon presents. • 41. Wisconsin s Collective Bargaining Needs to End Essay Lately in the news, there has been talk about budget and money crises; these problems have been in many states and most recently in Washington D.C and Wisconsin. Governor of Wisconsin Scott Walker has decided to address these budget predicaments by sharply curtailing the Wisconsin public sector workers collective bargaining rights. The reaction from people in Wisconsin has been mostly negative. However, Governor Walker was right in making cuts in the pay of public sector workers and taking away their right to collective bargaining to help pay off the budget. The state has a $137 million deficit, so curtailing collective bargaining rights will save the state $30 million in the current budget, which ends June first. Collective bargaining ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were state wide school cancellations; teachers would call in sick to take part in the protests. Everyone involved in these demonstrations were all protesting the same issue: the fact that the Governor of Wisconsin was going to take away their rights to collective bargaining; the irony of this is that these protesters weren t also just from Wisconson, they were being sent in droves from different states to support the union. The fear was that this could happen in their respective states. He says that he needs to take this right away because in the upcoming biannual budget he would be introducing there will be a $3.6 million deficit that will need to be bridged. He believes that it will be essential in order to allow the state to actually balance its budget without laying any workers off (video citation) The controversy behind this is that the people of Wisconsin believe that if the Governor takes away collective bargaining, he will take away the rights of the people, especially public sector workers, such as teachers and nurses. Governor Walker though is correct in taking this drastic measure because the state currently has a $137 million deficit. They need some way to bridge this deficit, so why not take out collective bargaining? Not all people agree with this way of thinking. The film starts off in the early 12th century with a blacksmith called Balian of Ibelin (who is actually an artificier, or military engineer) that has just lost his wife to suicide and is given the chance to go to the Holy Land to seek forgiveness for her sin by his long lost father Godfrey of Ibelin. When it comes to Saladin, the film makes it seem as though he was a man of tolerance and respect when in reality, he took pleasure in watching the decapitation of hundreds of christen soldiers and civilians alike. Through out his time as ruler of the Muslims, Saladin Preached jihad(or holy war) on the Christians and made it very clear that his goal was to take Jerusalem by force and kill all of the people living behind the walls and on the surrounding lands. Saladin as he is portrayed in the film is a man who chooses to work together with the Christians to try to find a reasonable balance between groups and holds them in high regard to himself.6 This is very far from any kind of truth at all. • 45. Contribution Of An Ethnographic Research On Friendship Throughout this essay I will be evaluating the contribution of an ethnographic approach to research on friendship. I will be looking at, and including evidence to support both sides of the argument as to whether or not this research method is in fact useful when it comes to gaining knowledge about friendship. As well as evaluating this method, I will compare it against others to reflect on the strengths, weaknesses and the typical data collected. I will look at some of the questions about friendship that have been addressed, and then whether this is the best method or if there are others that could have been more suitable. Ethnography is a qualitative method of research in which the researcher takes part in the activities of a group such that they are able to complete their observations over a period of time in a natural, real life environment. When it comes to investigating friendship, one question that has been raised is what is the role of friendship in the life of a 13 year old? . Several sources of data include ethnographic notes taken whilst spending time with a group of friends during school lunch breaks and diary/blog entries etc. Firstly, in this case the researcher would need to carefully consider the strengths and weaknesses of each type of data, for example, when looking at a blog the information/data available is likely to be information that the author wants to share with a wider audience whereas a diary entry is more private. In this case, both documents ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Amongst the turbulence of the era spiked with civil unrest, religious upheaval, the first regicide noted in modern history and the initial construction of the commonwealth s skeletal democratic foundations, the Restoration primarily bore witness to a dramatic cultural revolution. • 49. The Ethics Of Animal Research Essay PHILOSOPHY 106 Is the use of Animals in Biomedical Research Morally Justified? Animals have been treated immorally since the beginning of time, this is shown by hunting, farming, trapping, testing of products and biomedical research etc. As humans, majority of us claim animals as our resources as we use them for eating, making clothing, (leather and fur jackets, shoes) working animals, as a means of transport, animal testing etc. In this essay I will discuss the use of animals in biomedical research and state why some believe it is morally justified. I will write this essay using resources from Tom Regan s, The case for animal rights , David DeGrazia s, The ethics of animal research: what are the prospects for agreement? , Baruch A. Brody s, Defending animal research: An international perspective and Peter Singer s, Animal Liberation at 30 . I will then come to my own conclusion based on the different perspectives from the above philosophers and by using my own knowledge on the issue. In this first half of the essay I will discuss the different viewpoints from the philosophers Regan, DeGrazia and Singer on their perspectives on why biomedical research is morally unjustified. When she is given the opportunity to leave her awful life and start a new life with her partner Frank, she rejects the offer and stays in Ireland. Immediately this presents the reader with an apparent paradox. Why did Eveline stay? Wasn t her life terrible? It is not until the reader digs a little deeper into Eveline does the paradox solve itself. Joyce uses various literary techniques to justify why Eveline did not leave with Frank. In order to solve the paradox of Eveline, Joyce uses sentence structure to show the importance of various characters to Eveline. The father in Eveline is given a lengthy amount of the story and longer sentences. Sentences such as He said she used to squander the money, ... he was usually fairly bad on Saturday night. Although rap has only been popular for the last 15 years, it can be traced back to the days of slavery and even further to the tribes of Africa. Rap is used now as it was used for the past few centuries, as a form of communication. This music has been a way for the young African American s to speak out about their lives and the struggles they go through. She goes on to explain, quot;A sekere is a big gourd with beads around it quot;. She also noted that many of the sounds rappers use in her studio are from the Imo tribe of Nigeria (80). There are many comparisons between rap and African music but one comparison you don t hear about too often is the influence by Puerto Ricans living in New York at the time rap started popping up. Juan Flores brings up this comparison in his article, quot;Recital of decimals and aguinaldos in the Puerto Rican folk tradition involved methods of improvisation and alternation much like those typical of rap performances, while the tongue twisting (trabalengua) style of some plena singing is an even more direct antecedent.
